He wakes and the first thing he notices is that his tail is freezing followed quickly by the smell of wood smoke, pine, dirt, mangy animal and her. The next item to capture his attention is the sound of a fire popping and burnt wood shifting in the fire and when he opens his eyes he can see that the fire is very low. Finally, he notices the dead weight on his upper right arm; he looks down and sees her using his bicep as a pillow and the memories from earlier come rushing to the forefront of his mind while a lopsided grin stretches his lips.
Being careful not to disturb her, he reaches over to the pile of wood sitting off to the side and starts throwing twigs and branches onto the flames. Once those get going, he adds larger pieces of wood until he’s got a good sized fire going again. Then with a contented sigh, he readjusts his duster that they’re using as a blanket and then settles back down next to the woman he loves.
He starts to stroke her long black tresses amazed at how soft it is. It’s even softer than he imagined it would be all those years ago when he first realized he was falling in love with her. He never thought the day would come that she would return his affections, but here she is, sleeping in his arms.
He’s so happy that at first he doesn’t notice the low rumbling noise filling the chamber they’re in. When he does finally take note of it, he belatedly realizes that he’s the one making the sound. He has to chuckle to himself as it dawns on him that he’s purring.
Take her, Anung un Rama hisses in his mind. Nothing can stop you. Take her. She’s yours. You know you want to.
“Go away,” Hellboy quietly growls, the purring suddenly gone.
She’s nothing, Anung un Rama snaps back. Just use her and be done with it.
“She’s everything to me,” Hellboy snarls as his body starts to shake.
That pitiful, weak thing? Anung un Rama scoffs. You could snap her like a twig. Do it. Take her. Force her to submit. She is weak. She is nothing. She doesn’t care for you.
“NO!” Hellboy bellows just before he launches himself out of their makeshift bed and out of the caves.
Liz is startled awake by Hellboy’s yelling and her pillow suddenly being yanked out from under her head. She lies there dazed for a few moments before she realizes that Hellboy took off screaming. Still slightly groggy, she stands unsteadily and follows him, dragging his duster with her. When she gets outside she’s met by Abe who came to see what the yelling was about.
“What happened?” Abe asks.
“I’m not sure,” Liz answers. “One moment I’m sound asleep and the next Red’s yelling and running out the door.”
“Hmm, well, we better find him,” he states as he starts to follow Hellboy’s rather sizable footprints in the snow. “The government agents should be leaving soon.”
“Any idea how long we’ve been up here?” she asks as she follows him.
“Almost six hours,” he answers. “John will call when they’re gone, but by my calculations they should be about done.”
“How long does it take to load up a bunch of kids and goats?” she inquires.
“Well, the children will have to be in secured seats to make the trip down the mountain,” Abe replies while still tracking Hellboy through the trees. “You remember how rough the road was coming up here. Going down it will not be any picnic either, I can assure you. The goats will simply be herded down the mountain, but that requires a shepherd and probably a dog or two to be brought up here.”
“Where are they going to get thirty-four car seats?” she questions.
“They won’t need them,” he responds. “They will simply make multiple trips.”
“That explains why it’s taking so long,” she yawns as she follows the merman.
Abe only nods as they continue their trek through the forest. Eventually they come to an open area next to a cliff and that’s where they find Hellboy. He’s angrily pacing at the top of the cliff, his tail thrashing from side to side and mumbling to himself. Liz starts forward but Abe puts a hand on her shoulder and shakes his head ‘no.’
Abe takes off a glove, holds his now bare hand up towards his agitated friend and hyper extends his fingers. A few moments later he gives a little jump as if stung and quickly brings his hand back towards his body. Liz is watching Abe with worry and curiosity in her eyes when he turns to look at her.
It is worse than I feared, Abe tells her silently.
“What’s the matter?” she whispers back.
Anung un Rama is not as dead as Hellboy lead us to believe, he replies. It seems the demon wants Hellboy to rape you. Hellboy is fighting him, but he’s losing ground. You should return to camp. I will talk to Hellboy.
“No,” she hisses softly. “I won’t leave him.”
Interesting, that is Anung un Rama’s reason to why Hellboy should rape you, he responds. One of many, I’m sure.
“Excuse me?” Liz quietly growls, turning towards the blue figure beside her.
Anung un Rama is trying to convince Hellboy that he should rape you because you’re only going to leave like you’ve done so many times before, he reminds her. You don’t exactly have a perfect track record, you know. Unfortunately, this may be the argument that will be Hellboy’s undoing. Perhaps it would be best if you went back now.
“What? Are you deaf?” she snaps. “I’m not leaving him.”
It may not be safe to stay, he points out.
“I don’t care!” she yells back. “I love him and I’m staying!”
With that, she turns and stomps across the small clearing towards Hellboy. Somehow, Hellboy didn’t hear her outburst and is startled when he suddenly finds Liz standing in his path. He blinks a few times and isn’t sure if he’s more surprised by her suddenly being there or the fact that she looks mad enough to spit nails.
“Listen, you overgrown red monkey,” she nearly shouts as she pokes him in the chest with a finger. “You tell that psychotic son of a bitch demon that’s bopping around in your head to just fuck off! I love you and I’m not going anywhere!”
With that, she grabs the front of his top, pulls him down to her level and soundly kisses him. He’s so shocked that he doesn’t fight her. When he comes to his senses, he gladly pulls her to him and deepens the kiss.
Take her now! Anung un Rama insists.
Ah, shut up, Hellboy smugly tells the demon.
Time stands still as his world shrinks down to just the two of them. The trolls, the kids, the cold, nothing matters except the feeling of her pressed against his body, the smell of her and the taste of her kiss. He deftly ignores the snarling of Anung un Rama and doesn’t seem to notice a nearby voice talking seemingly to himself.
“I hate to break this beautiful moment up,” Abe starts only to pause momentarily by a growl from Hellboy. “John just called. They’re starting to load the last of the kids now. We should head back.”
Hellboy grumbles something under his breath that Liz catches and makes her choke back a laugh. Abe doesn’t hear and Hell will freeze over before he uses telepathy to find out what Hellboy said. He hands Hellboy the duster Liz dropped just before she went to tell Anung un Rama off. Hellboy mumbles a ‘thank you’ as he snatches the garment from Abe’s hands and shrugs it on.
A few moments later the trio of freaks is headed down the mountain back towards camp. They walk on in silence for some time before a question pops into Hellboy’s head.
“So, Sparky, why’d you come all the way up the hill?” Hellboy asks, a sly smile touching his lips. “You miss my sparkling personality that much?”
“No,” Liz answers, smirking at his crestfallen face. “I didn’t feel like having a bunch of Swedes think I was part of the entertainment for the troops, as it were.”
“What do you mean, ‘as it were’?” Hellboy demands, his tail suddenly twitching again, though not as strongly as before.
“Think about it, Red,” Abe interjects. “If you came upon one woman and a dozen men alone in the mountains, what would you think she was there for?”
“They wouldn’t dare,” Hellboy snarls.
“It is just part of human nature,” Abe replies with a shrug and a graceful wave of the hand.
They continue on in silence once more for some time, before Liz thinks of a question of her own.
“Red, that night before we left on this mission…,” she starts, but hesitates.
“Yeah, what about it?” Hellboy inquires a bit uncomfortably.
“Well, when I take a bath, the water only stays hot for a short time,” she continues. “But we were in your tub for hours and the water stayed hot the whole time we were in there. What was up with that?”
“It’s a hot tub, remember?” Hellboy reminds her, it’s his turn to smirk. “It’ll keep the water hot as long as there’s water in there. The tech guys even figured out a way for the heater to automatically kick in when I fill the tub and to turn off when it’s empty. Cool, huh?"
“Very nice,” she replies as she sidles up to him and puts an arm around his waist. “So, does it have jets too?”
“Of course,” Hellboy purrs while his left arm circles her shoulders, not even noticing Abe picking up the pace.
“I bet it’d be great for making bubbles,” she muses as she smiles up at him.
“Um, yeah, I guess so,” he replies, perplexed.
“Oh, can you imagine a bubble bath with foam a foot thick?” she sighs with just the thought.
“WHAT!?” he yells as he stops dead in his tracks. “NO! There will be NO bubble bath in my bathtub!”
“Whatever you say, dear,” Liz calls back as she follows Abe down the mountain.
Hellboy stands there glaring at their retreating backs for a few moments before he starts following them again, sulking all the way. A few minutes later Liz catches up with Abe and his very long legs. They walk side by side for several seconds before he breaks the silence.
“You have a question,” Abe states.
“You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” she asks.
“I knew if I told you to go over and tell Hellboy that you love him that it wouldn’t have the same impact as you being…forceful about it,” he answers. “Are you upset?”
“No, I just wanted to check if it was an accident or if you were being sneaky,” she replies with a shrug.
“Sneaky,” he assures her.
“Who’s being sneaky?” Hellboy inquires as he catches up to them.
“I was,” Abe replies. “I got Liz upset so that she could express her feelings for you a bit more vehemently than she normally would. It worked rather well, I think.”
“Sounds pretty proud of himself, don’t he?” Hellboy asks Liz.
“He certainly does,” she agrees as she glances down at her feet. “Ah, darn, my shoe’s untied. You guys keep going. I’ll catch up.”
Hellboy and Abe pause a moment and watch as she kneels down in the snow to retie her snow boot.
“You guys go on,” she insists as she makes a shooing motion with her hand. “I’m a big girl. I can tie my shoes on my own.”
“Ok,” Hellboy replies with a shrug.
Hellboy continues the trek down to the camp that’s just coming into sight with Abe by his side.
“Something’s bothering you,” Abe states.
“She wants to put bubble bath in my tub,” Hellboy grumbles. “She wouldn’t really do that would she?”
“I think you better get used to the idea of your bathroom smelling like lavender,” Abe tells him just before raising his voice a bit. “Do it and I’ll give you nightmares for a week.”
“Do wh…”
WHAP!
Ice and snow drip off of the side of Hellboy’s face as he stands there stunned.
“Did you just hit me with a snowball?” he demands as he turns and faces Liz who’s trying not to laugh.
“You weren’t supposed to turn your head,” she snickers, still trying to hold it in.
“You hit me with a SNOWBALL!” he shouts as he turns to face his assailant.
The battle is over. Liz loses as she starts laughing so hard that she can barely breathe and her arms are crossed over her stomach while she doubles over. Hellboy glares at her as Abe beats a hasty retreat out of there.
“You’ll pay for that, woman,” Hellboy snarls as he scoops up a load of snow in his right hand.
She barely manages to get behind a tree in time just as the massive snowball hits the spruce and shatters into a millions pieces. The woods are filled with shrieks, laughter and the occasional curse as Hellboy and Liz proceed to chase each other down the mountain while snowballs fly every which way. Abe makes it back to the mostly broken down camp just before them and is greeted by John.
“Great, you guys are ba…”
WHAP!
John stands there for a few moments before he blinks the snow out of his eyes and spits it out of his mouth.
“Why me?” he mutters as he turns to go in search of a towel.
Abe turns around to find Hellboy and Liz on their hands and knees, unable to stand because they’re laughing too hard. Even Abe begins to chuckle at the sight of these two covered with splotches of snow from their fight and the memory of John with a kisser full of the white powdery stuff. From the sounds of other agents laughing and razzing poor John, it sounds like the young man hasn’t had any luck finding that towel yet.
With a shake of his head, Abe takes pity on John and goes to assist him in finding a towel. Eventually, Hellboy and Liz manage to pull themselves together enough to get up and help tear down the rest of the tents and get them stowed away. Before long, they’re ready to go and Hellboy gives one last kiss to Liz that lasts over five minutes before he climbs into his crate marked ‘Live Cargo’ which is identical to the one Abe is already sealed in. Shortly after he’s crated, they start the long journey home.
