Warren had only been in the detention room a few times. If he remembered correctly, the last time it had been because he blew up and attacked Stronghold. The place had not changed very much. Same maddening white walls, the lights, the plain desks that really looked out of place in the otherwise sterile room straight off some alien's space-ship. It still nullified all of their powers at least which was one minor blessing.
"Do you have your chemistry book?"
Looking up from where he had been scratching at the surface of his desk, Warren blinked at Crystal. Both Speed and Lash were on the other side of the room. The girl however--glasses recovered and settled in place again--was pulling her desk closer to his. Her textbook was open on the desk as was a battered-looking notebook. They were in detention and she was thinking about homework?
"No."
He started to say something else when there was another notebook shoved into his hands and a pen. The girl was already flipping through her text.
"Then we can share. Remember the page? My notes are probably still in my locker."
For a minute, he just stared at her. Then, shrugging, he pushed himself straighter in his chair and leaned forward. "Page sixty-seven."
"Hm."
Again he stared at her before just giving up as the text was turned to rest across both of their desks for easier access. Maybe detention was not so bad. This time at least he had something to do other than sitting and burning himself up over thinking too much. He even found himself able to concentrate on the material. It was actually not all that bad even if he still hated that class.
"Are the two little love-birds having a good time?"
Scratch any hope of concentration.
"Looks like they're gettin' pretty close over there, huh, Lash?"
Just as Warren turned a page to look for the answer to the next question, Crystal used her mechanical pencil to halt his hand. "Hold on, need that last formula."
The backs of her fingers felt a little cool at first but then again this place was always cold. The touch was warm rather quickly.
"Ok, got it."
He let the page turn as she went back to writing answers.
"What sort of geek brings homework to detention anyway?" Lash spoke up again when there was no reaction.
"Actually, better ta ask what sorta geek lets a girl push him inta doing it."
They were the ones who were pushing. He may have pressed a little too hard when writing the next answer down but it did not tear the paper.
"Peace always was a lady's man. I mean, first it was that nature-chick, then he went after that hot blond on the same night of their date. Now he's pickin' up another one," Lash continued.
"And who knows how many on the side while he was dating."
The answer suddenly left Warren, his mind blanking out. Glaring down at the half-finished string of letters and numbers, he let his hair conceal the look. Apparently he was not quite successful. Either that or Crystal caught onto things very quick because the eraser on the pencil tapped his hand sharply. It seemed a trait she had actually, reading people.
"You'd better substitute that symbol for the one you just finished."
"Which one?"
She was causing a distraction. It was just what he needed actually as he watched her lean forward and turn the text more toward him. Crystal picked the notebook up to point to his answer with her pencil. Lash was talking again but with the tip of the pencil drawing his attention to the symbols in the text and back to his paper, he found it rather easy to ignore.
"See better now?"
"Yeah. Thanks."
Just like that and they continued the homework. Actually, Warren had to admit to himself that seeing Speed and Lash so pissed off by being completely ignored was worth the effort. Perhaps Crystal really was not all that bad after all. Not that he would ever admit it.

If anyone had ever told him he would voluntarily choose to leave his usual table to Stronghold's group in order to go sit with a girl, Warren would likely have fried them on the spot. Even when he was dating Freon she had come over to sit with them every time. So it was a bit of surprise that he found himself actually going over to where Gavin and Crystal were sitting. It was far too cold for students to sit outside.
He did not bother to ask, he simply took a seat. Gavin looked shocked but Crystal only glanced over to see who it was before she went back to reading her book. Absently, he noticed that only those at the other end of the table had trays. There was a crumpled brown paper bag near the boy that was obviously used for the trash left after he ate. A blue and silver fabric cooler was to one side of the girl. Likely it had something to do with the last incident with cafeteria food.
"Hey, are you any good at the science stuff?"
Crystal paused and reached the end of the paragraph before she looked away from her book. "Not overly. What do you need?"
Warren pulled his bag up to tug free the science book. "Did you figure out the essay questions?"
A faint smirk touched the girl's lips and she closed her book to set it aside before turning more in order to face him.
"Of course. Essay questions are the easiest to me."
Asking for help was not half as hard or embarrassing as he thought. Gavin was there but when Warren glanced at him, the guy was not paying any attention. Not like the mute would go spreading rumors around or bugging him about it either. Yeah, he could get to like the guy he supposed.
Lunch was spent mostly in working on the questions. Just like the detention, he found it was rather easy to pick things up the way the girl explained them. The examples she used and the way she pointed them out were a lot of help. He was smart but in chemistry and science, he was struggling more and more.
They had just about finished the fourth and final question when someone came up to the table. "WARREN PEACE!"
Startled, all three of them remaining at the table looked up. There, hands on her hips, looking supremely pissed off, was Freon Winters. He barely had a moment to register the blue illumination around her hand before it struck his cheek with a sharp *crack*. The skin froze almost instantly. In a moment likely he would feel the burn but it happened too fast for nerves to keep up and register the actual pain.
"How DARE you! You bastard! All the time you were going out with me, you were seeing this...this...WHORE behind my back!"
Her hand drew back to strike him again. The blow never fell. Crystal had moved, grabbing Freon's wrist and jerking it back to spin her around. Silence fell in the lunch room as everyone turned to watch the confrontation. Freon's arm was virtually iced over but Crystal held on as a wind made her ponytail sway and clothes ripple.
"What...did...you...call...me?"
