Chapter 7 – Council of War
So they wanted him
back. One would think that it would make him happy to be given the
chance to return to his beloved tribe, but it did nothing to heal the
wound their rejection of his lover had cut in his heart. Ardeth knew
that they would only accept Rick because they had too, something he
had wanted to avoid from the start.
But the Lock-tai could
be fearsome opponents, even more so if they
were intend on erasing the Med-jai tribes from the world. Did he even
have a choice at all or was it just a game the gods were playing with
him, offering choices where he had none?
Maybe it was, but the
moment Rick put his hand on his shoulder Ardeth knew what to do. The
single gesture had told him more than a myriad of words would have
been capable of. No matter what he chose to do Rick would be at his
side, fighting, supporting, caring and loving until his very death.
So simple and yet so powerful, that he was enthralled by the moment.
Nodding his head in the
direction of the messenger, the Med-jai started to speak: “I
will return to the tribes if they need me. But the other leaders
should be aware that I will only return for their time of need.
Whether or not I will stay afterwards is not yet decided.”
Ardeth waited until the
messenger had bowed and taken his leave before turning around to Rick
again. His lover had a small smile on his face, obviously pleased
with the way things were going. He had already suspected that their
calm life of late had bored Rick somewhat, although his lover had
never complained.
Maybe someday he would
understand why Rick constantly needed to risk his life, while he
would also be contend with living a peaceful life with the ones he
loved. It was true that he would go into battle if it was required of
him, but unlike his lover he wasn't looking forward to it. There were
always losses in battle and he had so very much to loose now. Pulling
Rick close to his body he devoured the other man's lips in a hungry
kiss, relishing the feel of their touches.

Rick felt the
anxiousness in his body increase, the closer they came to the Med-jai
village. When Ardeth had decided to join the battle he had been glad
that there would be a new adventure in their lives,
swiping away the boredom that being at home had caused.
Not that he was bored
by his lover. Throwing a quick glance over to the Med-jai, who was
riding next to him, Rick felt the mixture of love and desire that he
always felt when gazing at Ardeth boil up in him again. He didn't
think that he could ever tire of the strong shoulders, the beautiful
face and the perfectly shaped ass.
But since Alex and
Jonathan were also living with them Rick couldn't allow himself the
luxury of spending the whole day in bed with his lover, so he was
bored most of the time. Now the reality of what he had agreed to came
closer with every step his camel took in the direction of the
village, tensing his body in grim preparation.
Ardeth seemed to have
caught on to his feelings, suddenly riding at his side and
conspiratorially leaning closer. To Alex
and Jonathan riding behind them it would look as if Ardeth had
something to tell him, even if his former brother-in-law might know
better.
“It does not
matter to me that they can't accept you as my lover. I'm happy to
have you at my side.”
Although the words
meant a lot to him Rick was focusing on the small touch of Ardeth's
hand on his, sending a prickling sensation over his skin. A quick
exchange of secretive smiles and Ardeth had already left his side
again, riding at a distance that said nothing about the closeness
that usually reigned between the two of them. And that Jonathan was
rolling his eyes Rick didn't know or care about.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having told Jonathan
and Alex to stay in the hut they had lived in while they were with
the Med-jai, Ardeth and Rick strode towards the meeting hut. Ardeth
was unconsciously stroking his lover's
hand, both giving and receiving reassurance.
He had expected to be
nervous about returning to his tribe, but now that he faced what he
had been afraid of doing the bravery he had always been proud of came
to the front. As long as Rick stayed by his side he could face what
ever was coming at them, his lover's presence lending him the
strength he needed.
Before they entered the
hut he pulled Rick into a quick, but passionate kiss, their tongues
entwining and sharing the taste of their mixed salivas. He would have
liked it to go on forever, to just be locked in this moment and not
have to face his future, but that was a wish even Allah didn't have
the power to fulfill. Reluctantly breaking
their kiss he let his thumb stroke over Rick's upturned face before
entering the hut.
Everything was just
like at the day he had left. The hut looked the same, the chair that
had always been reserved for him devoid of another occupant. Even the
grim faces looked the same a they had on that day, just that
Muhammad's face was amongst them this time. Hesitating for only a
second Ardeth strode towards his place, Rick following him.
A thing that
immediately displeased him was that they hadn't bothered to bring a
chair for his lover, although the leaders had very well known that
Rick would take part in their gathering. But before Ardeth could
voice his thought Rick had already placed a hand on his shoulder,
silently shaking his head. He was grateful to know that Rick didn't
want to be the cause for increasing the differences between himself
and his tribes, since the other man usually would have pointed the
missing chair out.
“My praised
leader,” Tamir had risen from his chair as he started to speak.
“the council is pleased that you returned to us in our time of
need.” Two snorts commented his speech, one coming from Rashid
who looked as if he wanted to kill Ardeth and the other came from
Rick, who obviously didn't believe a single word the Med-jai had
spoken.
Not that Ardeth didn't
agree with him. He knew Tamir's personality very well and the other
man always tried to please the person that seemed to be of the most
use to him. Even though he could already feel anger boiling inside of
himself Ardeth stayed in his chair, patiently waiting for someone to
explain the situation.
Fortunately Muhammad
rose, taking the right to speak from Tamir. “The Lock-tai have
been severely insulted by your defeat of their leader. They have
sworn to wag a war upon our tribes until even the last of our kind is
destroyed. Most of us are seasoned warriors, but our numbers
have been diminished in the fight against Anubis' army. They
outnumber us by far.”
Ardeth remembered his
dream, the lion headed warriors running
through the desert sand, blood lust gleaming in their eyes. Their
eyes had looked the same as those of the Anubis warriors. But they
weren't the only ones who were obsessed
with blood shed. He himself had never experienced it, but Ardeth knew
that there had been many battles of Med-jai and Lock-tai in the past,
both tribes claiming the same stretches of land. The Med-jai had
always won those fights, but had paid their victories with the lives
of many warriors.
“How much larger
is their army than ours?” Ardeth asked, suspecting that the
answer wouldn't be good.
“If every man and
boy, who is able to lift a weapon fights, there will still be seven
of them fighting against each one of our number.” Rick's
shocked gasp could be heard from behind him, while Ardeth stifled
his own response. Seven against one. He had expected it to be bad,
but not this bad.
Even if they fought
with all their strength the odds would be against them. Knowing that
his tribe's survival was at stake freed something he had pushed to
the back of his mind. Ardeth didn't notice that his stance was
prouder as he stood up or that his voice had grown more commanding,
but the other leaders were aware of the subtle changes. He wasn't
just Rick's lover anymore, no, he was once again a leader and
warrior, responsible for the sake of his tribe.
“These are indeed
bad news, but we will have to face the fate that has been chosen for
us. Round up your tribes and arm every man, that is able to fight,
then train them. Send out some of the falcons to find out how much
time we have left, before the Lock-tai army arrives. Our chances seem
to be bad, but in the end our fate will be decided by Allah. We can
only hope and pray and maybe he will reward us with victory.”
All of the leaders
hailed Ardeth's commands, hurrying out of the council hut to meet
with their tribes. Even those who had disliked his return seemed to
be glad that someone had taken the leadership and was giving them an
example to follow. When only Rick and himself were left, Ardeth
turned around to face his lover.
