Kayla didn’t bother getting out of bed the next day or
day after that. Twice she yelled to Kul’vir that she was sick.
The third time he knew she was lying.
“Open the door Kayla,” he demanded. His demands
weren’t as threatening as Maha'vin but she didn’t take them lightly. Kul’vir
looked around at the destroyed looking room. He looked at Kayla whom looked
just as bad as her room did. She pulled her robe tightly around her and sat on
her bed. It was too late. Kul’vir had already seen the nasty bite mark his
uncle left on her shoulder.
“You have to show your face sooner or later. You can
not hide in a room.”
“I know,” she turned to look at him. “What are they
saying about me?”
“That your scent was so strong you made the males want
to attack you,” he chuckled. “If it weren’t for Uncle they possibly would
have.” He sees the broken table and looked back at her. “Kayla, did you mate
with Uncle?”
“No,” she said honestly. “I wanted to. He wanted to,
hence the table, but he wouldn’t.”
“He would be demoted to a lower rank,” he told her. He
explained the marking and if he removed it he could possibly be banned from the
clan until he prove himself again or fight a warrior of his class. “But Ak’hil told the others how your presence and scent made him
perform better.” Kayla laughed but Kul’vir was serious.
“How is your uncle reacting to others?”
Kul’vir shrugged his shoulders. “No one has seen him
since then. His ship is gone.” He could feel her anxiety. “Relax, uncle does
this often. He will return.”
“Why do you cover yourself with the cloth?” He
questioned looking at the black material. Kayla cut a dress Siva’nee gave her.
It barely covered her butt and frontal area. She was hoping the material would
move with her body like the other dresses.
“I found out you all can see,” She teased. Kul’vir
laughed at her.
When Kayla walked in with Kul’vir she noticed more of
the honorable warriors treated her nicely, though they were slightly
disappointed with her new attire. Kul’vir later told her it was because they
wanted to mate with her every since that night.
She didn’t see Maha'vin for weeks. Yo’jit could feel
her heart racing every time she walked into a room.
“You did not practice today Kayla,” Yo’jit said. Kayla
stopped and looked at him.
“I decided to run today,” she announced. “How are
you?”
“Better now that I’ve seen you,” he clicked softly. “I
like the way you use those little sticks so I went with the idea to the
weaponry men. They will be implementing the new design soon.”
“Wow that’s great,” she smiled. “I can’t wait.”
He leaned on the wall as he watched the sweat pour
from her body. She wasn’t wearing her usual training attire. If he could recall
he think she called them shorts.
He nodded approvingly in her direction.
“Where’s Maha'vin?” Yo’jit moaned when she mentioned
the name.
“I’m not entirely sure. His ship is gone. More than
likely he’s out doing something he shouldn’t be doing. You should stay away
from him Kayla.”
She watched him walk away. He smiled when he heard her
ask why. “He killed his last mate. She cursed him and he snapped her neck by
accident.” Yo’jit could hear her gasp. “When they found her body it was claw
marks on her face and body.” He walked around the corridor leaving her there in
shock. She could never see Maha'vin doing such things.
His words hunted her for days, but so did Maha'vin.
Without him there she didn’t get angry as much. Only when she heard snickers of
others teasing about they could sleep better at night. Kayla was hanging out
with two of the boys she trained last week when Kul’vir came rushing to get
her.
“You should know that Maha'vin’s ship returned on auto
pilot without him.” Kayla’s fruit dropped from her hands as she stared at him.
“Take me to your father,” she demanded. Kayla hasn’t
seen much of Sa’tesh nor Nam’rah since she arrived. Since Nam’rah was having a
baby any day Sa’tesh stayed close by just in case she needed him.
“I told you not to tell her,” Sa’tesh growled at his
son. “Sometimes I wonder if you’re more loyal to the ooman rather than me.”
She didn’t try to kill me, Kul’vir thought.
“So what are you going to do,” Kayla questioned
softly, trying not to upset the already angry elder.
“He chooses his fate,” he spoke coldly. “You may
remove your scar now if you wish. Once you find a suitable mate. He was a great
warrior.”
“Was,” Kayla repeated. “You talk as though he is
dead.”
“If he is I don’t think anyone will cry over it but
you,” he snarled at her. Kayla stared back at him.
“Kayla,” Kul’vir growled. She didn’t know how close
she was to her own death. His father was ready to snap her head off.
“Please forgive me Sa’tesh,” she groveled. “I wish to
go find him.”
He looked at her and laughed.
“Do you know where that ship just came back from? A
planet filled with hard meats. You are a good fighter Kayla. I will not risk
you going on a rescue mission. If his ship returned, that means he’s dead. My
brother lived a good life.” He nodded to her before he left the room. Kayla
stormed the other way.
“Where are you going,” Kul’vir questioned as her fast
pace turned into a slow jog.
“To the weaponry,” she panted. “I can’t fight without
the proper weapons.”
“Kayla you heard my father,” he said to her in a
demanding tone.
“And you heard me,” she stopped and stared at him. He
never felt this kind of anger from her. Kul’vir knew as close as they were
Kayla would try to attack him without any weapons if he got in her way. She turned
and continued to jog.
“You can die.”
“If that is my fate,” she replied quickly.
“You will never be able to pilot a ship. You don’t
know how to get to the planet.” Kayla stopped running as his words started to
get to her. For the first time, she felt hopeless. “You can remove your scar
and mate now Kayla. Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“Yes I want a bunch of children with Yo’jit and Aa’rth,” She laughed sarcastically.
“You know there’s others,” he
said not catching on to her joke. He looked away from her as he spoke. “Then
there’s me?”
For the first time she could detect his emotions.
Kayla smiled at the nervous Yautja. He tried to sound more confident, “Of
course being you’re just an ooman I would consider it if you asked.” Kayla
laughed.
“If I truly wanted to mate, you would be in the top
two.” She pulled his hair playfully as he swatted her hand.
She never had been in the part of the ship where they
made weapons. Even with the small breathing tubes in her nostrils it was
somewhat difficult to breathe. One half was dedicated to tuning and testing the
weaponry. The other side that was separated with a glass window looked more on
the technical side. She watched them program the watches and helmets.
“You two are not allowed in here,” A man yelled at
them. Kul’vir growled back.
“I need armor,” Kayla said softly.
“And I need a new leg,” He replied tapping his fake
leg.
Kayla turned to Kul’vir, “Cover your nose.” He took
out the plugs he normally wear around her as she started to think about the
last time she seen Maha’vin. The passion he showed when he pinned her against
the wall and the rapid movement of his finger in side of her. Kul’vir noticed
the men looking curiously at Kayla.
“I really need armor,” She said softly as she walked
closer to the angry man. “Please, I need to protect myself properly if I am to
mate later.”
He nodded his head, “Ok. I can make it for you now if
you like.”
“That would be perfect,” She growled softly.
“I can make you a wrist blade if you like,” A smaller
Yautja chimed in. Kayla bowed her head softly towards him.
“She's going to need everything,” Kul’vir said for
her. He looked at Kayla and shook his head softly. “And I guess your going to
need me since I’m the only one who knows how to pilot uncle’s ship.”
“But your father…”
“Can go to a planet without weapons filled with many
hard meats,” he finished for her.
Hell, Kayla
thought. Within a few days Kayla was
ready.
“Is it just going to be you and me?” She questioned as
he helped her with the weapons. She thought they would be heavier than they
were but it was actually on the lighter side. She was still able to maneuver
with ease. Kul’vir was to busy chuckling over how odd her mask looked. It was
funny seeing all the controls on the out side of the mask. Of course it was
made for her facial structure. “Stop laughing at me.” She placed her mask in
her hand and looked at him.
“Actually I’m very proud of you Kayla,” he admitted as
he stood with his full armor on as well, “We are about to possibly go to our
deaths as true warriors and I could not think of a better person to go with.”
Oh god, is this his speech of encouragement, she tried to smile. He looked much more confident
than he did when she first seen him. She took the dagger off her thigh and handed
it to him. “This was your grandfathers. I want you to have it.”
Kul’vir was speechless. He looked down at it before
gently taking it from her hands. He quickly gave her his in return.
They both put on a cloak so their armor wouldn’t
attract any attention. When they reached the ship Ak’hil
was waiting for them along with Sh’lok. He was young
and always ready to fight. He admired Kayla every since she choked his father, Aa’rth.
“We don’t really like Maha’vin,” Ak’hil
admitted. “But we couldn’t let you two go by yourself on such an honorable
hunt. Besides, E’sita would mate with me more if I
bring back a few hard meats.”
“Ugh, that’s all he talks about now is mating,” Sh’lok joked.
“Who else knows?” Kayla questioned sitting next to Sh’lok.
“No one else,” Sh’lok
assured her. “I didn’t want you to die or bring back a hard meat and I not have
one.”
After watching Ak’hil scan
for any Yautja’s life signs on the planet, Kayla closed her eyes. She tried not
to get sick at all of the turns Kul’vir made in the ship. If they weren’t in
space she would think he was dodging traffic. The part of the planet they
landed on look like part of the rain forest except it was denser and a lot of
something that looked like fog. Kayla watched the others and followed in unison
as they put their masks on and shake each other shoulders. The doors opened
slowly.
“Hey will I be able to camouflage myself like you
guys,” she asked.
Kul’vir barked at her, telling her to shut up then
pressed a button on her self destruction device. She watched her hands
disappear.
Kayla wanted to
laugh as she waved her hand in her face but she didn’t want to piss of Kul’vir
again. She turned off the camouflage mode and decided to wait until they
activated theirs.
Ak’hil trilled at her softly.
They exited the ship slowly. Practicing with them was
one thing but watching them act just like the honored
warriors made her smile. She treated them like little boys because that’s how
they acted, until now. Now they were warriors. Their mission was to kill some aliens,
protect her, kill some more aliens and find Maha'vin.
The ground was soft from where she stood. She couldn’t
see what she was standing on because of the dense fog cover on the ground.
Suddenly there was a loud eerie scream at a distance. Ak’hil
took out his map and searched the area. They could see a faint dot on the
screen. He looked at Kayla and nodded his head. He didn’t have to tell her it
was Maha'vin and he could be in danger.
They started to jog in the direction Ak’hil pointed to. Ak’hil was in
front of her, Kul’vir was on her side and Sh’lok ran
sideways so he could watch where they were going and watch behind them. With
the weapons weighing her down Kayla tried to run more slowly but Kul’vir
wouldn’t allow it. He pulled her, making Kayla keep up at his pace. They
stopped as Ak’hil looked at his three dimensional map
again. Kayla could see a mountain. She looked at him and he nodded to her.
“Shit,” She whispered to herself as they started to jog again.
Kul’vir suddenly stopped. He had a feeling that
something wasn’t right. As an alien creature flew out the tree Kul’vir aimed
his plasma cannon at the creature and killed it. Not looking to see if he shot
correctly or not he picked Kayla up and started to run with the others right
behind him. She could see Sh’lok firing his cannon as
other aliens started chasing them. They were just as tall as the Yautja’s with
her but not as large. Their heads were long and shiny. Kayla felt helpless. She
could see more aliens coming in for them. Kayla managed to take out her spear
gun to help Sh’lok. The both of them managed to kill
enough for the others to flee. Sh’lok looked at her
and nodded in approval as Kul’vir put her down. He too patted her shoulder.
They all looked at the odd shaped mountain and proceeded to go inside one of
the several openings. Ak’hil pointed in the direction
to travel in and they walked slowly. Kayla looked around at all the places the
aliens could hide.
She thought she saw something duck back into a hole.
She raised her arm, making Kul’vir stop.
She pointed in the direction. She didn’t have infrared
or and other extra imaging technology on her mask. That would have taken a week
and Kayla didn’t want to wait that long.
Kul’vir threw his shuriken at the smaller alien,
cutting it in half. He shook his head softly in approval. He grabbed the dead
alien along by the tail as they continued to search for his uncle. By the time
they reached the end of a cavern, each warrior had two kills. Kayla was happy
with just one. They grunted and patted her on her back when she did kill one.
As soon as she did they wanted to stop and clean them. Then they did something
that Kayla didn’t know they would do. With the acid from the tail of the
creature they each marked their mask. Then marked hers.
She didn’t know what it was suppose to symbolize but whatever it was they were
very proud of themselves
Ak’hil looked at his map and looked at the wall. He was
stumped. He could see the life sign but the wall was blocked. Kayla walked up
to it and touched it with her hand. Then it dawned on her.
Maha'vin caused a cave in to lock himself in.
Kayla stepped back far enough and pressed the button
on her mask to fire her plasma cannon. It was too much for her and she flew
back hitting the wall behind her. They couldn’t help themselves as they roared
with laughter.
Feeling embarrassed she took the gun off and kicked it
causing more laughter. Once they were done laughing at her they knew what she
was trying to do.
The three of them shot simultaneously at the makeshift
wall. The large boulders immediately gave in and a hole was formed. It was
another tunnel.
Kul’vir went in first then Kayla and the others. She
noticed the green blood trail and immediately began to follow it. She almost
went past Kul’vir but he stopped her.
There he was. Lying motionless in
the corner. Kul’vir held her arm as Ak’hil
scanned his body for any signs of egg larvae in his system. When he gave her a
nod of approval she immediately rushed to him. Kayla held his head in her lap
as the three men took out their med kits to do what they could. She stroked his
face lightly with the back of her hand. Maha'vin winced and tried to scream but
the only thing that came out was a whimper. It pained Kayla to see him so weak
and in agony. When they started to apply some pasty blue stuff to his wounds he
balled his hand in a fist before passing out. When Ak’hil
felt that it was ok to move him he stood up. Kul’vir reattached Kayla’s plasma
gun to her shoulder and chuckled. Ak’hil and Kul’vir
held Maha’vin leaving Kayla to lead the way and Sh’lok
behind them.
A few times on the way to the ship they encountered
very hostile aliens. Sh’lok allowed Kayla to lean on
his back to use her plasma cannon during the attacks. It was hard for him to
aim good because feeling her body jerk every time amused him greatly. Sh’lok wanted to
stop and clean one but Kul’vir barked at him in an angry tone to continue to
walk. Kayla could tell that Maha'vin was a little too heavy for the both of
them to carry and both of the young men were getting weary. On the ship Kayla
covered Maha'vin with her cloak, only covering a portion of his body. She could
feel him shiver softly.
“Kayla, your arm,” Ak’hil
pointed to her dislocated shoulder.
“Yeah, it happened using the plasma cannon on that
last attack,” She winced. Kayla walked over to a bare section of the ship and
slammed her shoulder into the wall. “Fuck,” she said out loud from the pain.
When she looked her arm was back I place.
“Wow,” Ak’hil looked at her
in amazement. Sh’lok growled at her in delight.
“Pahel taught me,” she explained. “I dislocate it a
lot.”
“What is your fondness for him?” Ak’hil
questioned as he watched her sit on the floor next to Maha'vin.
Kayla couldn’t answer his question. She didn’t know
how. As far as she knew Maha'vin couldn’t stand being around her, except when
she was in heat. The only time he showed any interest in her before that was on
the way back from visiting Lex.
“See, he is making you go into heat just by thinking
about it,” Sh’lok laughed.
“I don’t know,” Kayla sighed as she looked at him. “He
doesn’t care for me much but for some reason when he is around I fight better.”
She let out a slight laugh.
“He is very fond of you,” Ak’hil
answered. “I heard him say to Yo’jit that he would cut his head off if he ever
touched you again. Maha'vin is the reason why two warriors should never breed. Too much aggression. ” Sh’lok
started to laugh.
Kul’vir was about to say something but Kayla shot
back, “If he were awake would you say that to his face, and would you be laughing?”
They both shook their heads no.
“Then don’t disrespect him now,” she warned them. She
looked down at Maha'vin and touched the soft hairs along the side of his face.
Kayla tried to ease the tension on the ship. “Why does Ka’mya snarl at me every
time she sees me?” Kayla noticed since she’s been on the ship everyone was
fairly decent to her except Ka’mya. Once, Kayla startled her by snarling back.
When Kul’vir and the others around them laughed she got angry and left the
room.
“Her and Maha'vin were considering mating together
when her time was right,” Sh’lok explained. “When you
came along he changed his mind. So she wants your head as a trophy.”
“Well, I wish her luck,” Kayla said sarcastically.
“She will never have my head or Maha'vin’s child.”
Sa’tesh paced back and forth at the docking station
with his wife. “If anything happened to my son I will kill the ooman with my
bare hands,” he yelled in her direction. “And the others, I know she influenced
them to join her.”
“Join her to find your brother,” Nam’rah reminded him.
“What I don’t understand Sa’tesh is why you never bothered to send out a search
party?”
“His ship returned so I presumed him dead.”
“Regardless of the bad blood between you two, Maha'vin
would never leave your body to the hard meats.”
“Why do you sing of his praise’s woman,” He barked at
her. “Do you still have feelings for him?” Instead of arguing with him she
watched the ship doors open. Nam’rah quickly alerted the medics to come and get
Maha'vin before she went and hugged on her son. Sa’tesh noticed the warrior’s
trophies and his anger slowly diminished. He never thought his son would
proudly display hard meats. As the men talked to one another, Kayla started to
walk with the medics to the medical lab with Maha’vin’s body.
“Kayla,” Nam’rah said stopping her. “Please, let me
walk you to your quarters. There is much for us to discuss. Kayla nodded at her
as they proceeded to walk. Nam’rah didn’t say anything to her until she closed
Kayla’s door.
“You just sentenced yourself to death if Maha'vin
lives.”
Kayla turned to look at her as she took off her
weapons from the mission, and sat them on the table. “I don’t understand.”
“Maha’vin may try to kill you. You just ridiculed
him.” Kayla looked at her in bewilderment as she slowly sat across from her.
“You went on a mission, an ooman and three young
bloods to bring back one of the most feared men on this ship. Do you hear what
I’m saying to you Kayla? You just made him look weak. Honestly he would have
been better off dying with legends and tales of what may have happened. Now
everyone is angry with you for bringing him back and he will be angry as well.”
She stood up and walked towards the door as Kayla watched her in shock.
“Nam’rah, should I leave?”
“No one in our clan flee. We accept whatever is given
to us. Kayla, start thinking with your head instead of your heart.”
“My heart has nothing to do with this,” Kayla
answered.
Nam’rah quickly turned around, her long dreads flying.
“I too know what it is like to be under Maha'vin’s spell. He’s rough on the
outside and when he does one little thing decent you think you’re the only one
in the universe who had saw it and you’re instantly hooked. You feel like he
let you into his private world and it only belongs to you and him. Before you
know it he’s passing you off to someone else. It has happened to me.” She
turned to walk out the room. “You have been warned Kayla.”
She sat there to stun to move. She didn’t know all of
their ways, but even if she did Kayla could never leave him somewhere to die.
Especially when she thought she was the reason he fled. Kayla was drying off
from her shower when her com started to beep.
“Are you ok Kul’vir?” she knew it was him. He was the
only one who ever called her.
“I was checking on you. I was making sure mother
didn’t try to attack you. She's pretty aggressive when she is pregnant.”
Kayla was unsure if she should mention it or not but
her curiosity got the best of her. She bit her lip and tried to think of a non
threatening way to ask. After all Kul’vir was a Yautja.
“Do you know if your mom ever mated with anyone else
other than your father?” Kul’vir never answered her. A few moments later he was
at her door.
Instead of his usual greeting he walked right passed
her. “Why do you ask me such a question? What did you and Mother speak about?”
“Maha'vin. She warned me to stay away. She wasn’t the
only one. Yo’jit did as well.”
“His warnings are meaningless,” he grunted sitting
down. He sat on her bed, looking out the window. Kayla sat across from him. “He just wants you
for himself. If that consists of plotting a way to kill Uncle then so be it.” Kayla was quiet as he continued. “My mother has two
older sons from a previous mate who died in a battle. I was told that mother once
mated with Maha'vin shortly after his mate’s death. It was too soon for him and
he changed his mind.”
“So you were born shortly thereafter?”
Kul’vir nodded yes. “I know that Maha'vin could very
well be my father Kayla. Why do you think I agreed to go with you on the
mission?” Kul’vir was silent. Kayla looked over at him and his eyes were
closed.
My goodness, they can sleep sitting up, she looked in amazement.
“Why are you staring at me?” Kayla jumped. Kul’vir
laughed at her.
She hit him playfully. “Lie down and rest Kul’vir.”
She raised the temperature on the wall and threw the covers over him. She knew
the room was to cold for him. The bed was big enough for the both of them to
lie down comfortably. He turned over on his back and grunted.
“Sometimes I wish the man I call Uncle were my
father,” he spoke softly. “He would never sentence his son to a hunt he wasn’t
ready for and he wouldn’t leave his brother on a planet filled with hard meats
awaiting his death. Maha'vin should have been elder.”
“Speak your words to no one,” Kayla whispered.
“Only you Kayla.”
