Ariane: Thanks for your
suggestion. I hadn't thought about writing Nefertiri's POV, but now
that you mentioned it, I'll give it a try.
Thanks also to
Morningstar for continuously giving me feedback and to Anon, because
it's great to have a new reviewer.
Chapter 7 – Phylae
Upon their arrival on
the island, they decided, that they wouldn't split up in groups this
time. Their chances of having arrived before Nefertiri were good, as
no trails disturbed the sand. Alex would have liked to explore the
outer areas of the temple, but Rick tugged him along into the main
building.
Three hours later they
emerged again. Dusty, hot and without the key. Rick was sure, that
they had searched every inch of the temple, yet they found nothing.
As he was still slightly angry at Ardeth about what he said at
Hamunaptra, he confronted him: “So are you sure, that this is
the right temple?”
“Of course, I am sure.”
“Gentlemen, I am certain the
key is somewhere here. Maybe if we...”
“Keep out of it, Jonathan.”,
both men said simultaneously, before arguing on.
Alex shook his head and
walked away, while Jonathan tried to calm the other two down.
'Grown-ups. They're worse than kindergarden kids.' At least he could
explore the rest of the temple now, without his dad trying to keep
him on a short leash. Ever since Ahm-Shere he had been overprotective
and Alex missed wandering around tombs and temples unsupervised. It
had already gotten him into trouble more times, than he could
remember, but it had always been worth it.
The smaller side temple
seemed the most interesting thing in the area, so Alex went over to
it. Upon closer inspection, the temple proofed to be quite boring and
ordinary. Looking up to admire the flower tops of the pillars, Alex
walked around the temple, not paying any attention to where he was
going.

'Finally.' Jonathan was
glad, that the two other men had calmed down. The air between them
was still thick with tension, but obviously they didn't want to
discuss whatever issue they had in front of him. Wandering over into
the shade of a lone palm tree, Jonathan took a sip from his water
flask. Rick and Ardeth had agreed that they were at the right temple,
but now they were on the verge of an argument about who had missed
the clue, that would have led them to the key.
Suddenly Rick looked
around himself. “Where the hell is Alex?”
Jonathan shrugged and
said: “We should go looking for him. You two search the temple
and I stay here...in case he returns.”
Before Rick could glare
at him and answer, they heard Alex call out for help. Both the
Med-jai and Rick cursed, before sprinting in the direction the cry
came from. Jonathan followed at a slower pace, sure that they had
everything under control. As he walked over to the side temple a
small plane soared over his head.

' Not again.' Someday
Alex would give him a stroke. His exploring was just a tad bit too
dangerous for Rick's liking. Entering the side temple, he immediately
saw Alex and breathed a sigh of relief. At least he wasn't trapped
somewhere.
But Rick had been
hoping too soon, as Alex leg was stuck in the ground. When he walked
through the temple, the ground had suddenly given way under his foot
and now his left leg, up to the knee, was stuck in some underground
chamber.
“We should remove the wooden
boards.”
Immediately getting to
work, they pulled out the boards until Alex was able to get his leg
free. His knee was scabbed and bled lightly. Quickly getting a bottle
of alcohol out of his bag, Rick began to clean the wound.
“Ouch, dad! That hurts.”
“That's why you shouldn't
wander off on your own.”
“Was I supposed to listen to
you arguing the whole time?”
Rick didn't reply to
that, but instead he wrapped Alex knee in a tight bandage. Ardeth and
Jonathan had meanwhile gone closer to the hole in the ground and
examined it. Carefully climbing in, they looked around.
“O'Connell? It seems your son
has found the key.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was cramped in the small underground chamber with Jonathan and
Ardeth standing next to each other. In front of them was a huge
golden chest, that was marked with the sign of Isis. Blowing the dust
off the lid, Ardeth looked closely at the hieroglyphics written
there.
“Don't open it, before you read the text.” Rick
helpfully supplied from above them. “What's written there?”
“I think we have the right chest. Here stands: ' What Isis
once had written, you shall then be able to read. The treasure herein
hidden will open up your dreams.'. That sounds like the thing we were
looking for. But here's more: 'His children guard the waters of the
Nile as he guards the key. Not birds nor mammals await you at his
home, but razor sharp teeth. The key can only be taken by those, who
slay the Nile's fiercest warriors.'. I think, that's our clue for the
next key.”
Jonathan audibly gulped next to him. “And you don't suppose,
that it could be some random poem and no clue at all?”
Not deeming the question worth answering, Ardeth tried to open the
chest's lid, only to find that they would need a key. A key which
they didn't have and which they had no idea where to look for.
Deciding, that there had to be another way, the Med-jai called to
Rick.
“O'Connell, we need a crowbar. We can't get the chest to
open.”
Cursing under his breath, Rick searched their equipment for the
required tool. Instead of throwing it down, he climbed into the hole.
Jonathan had stepped back a bit, so that Rick could stand right next
to Ardeth. He could feel himself get nervous at the close proximity
to the Med-jai. To cover it up, he quickly called up to Alex.
“Alex, watch out. If you see anyone, warn us. Ok?”
“Okay, dad.”
What a boring thing to do. Keep watch, while everybody else got to
get a look at the mysterious chest. It was just so unfair. Picking up
a small stick Alex started writing hieroglyphics
into the sand, practicing his name.
First Rick tried to open the chest alone, but the lid didn't move
one millimeter. Ardeth joined him and so they were standing very
close to each other, the two of them leaning on the crowbar. They
were so close, that Rick could easily see the beads of sweat forming
on Ardeth's forehead as he used his full strength to press down the
bar. If he just leaned forward a little, he
could easily kiss the Med-jai. Quickly shaking that thought from his
head, Rick once again focused on the task
at hand. 'I gotta stop thinking those things. I am here to save Evy.'
“Maybe you are trying at the wrong spot.”, Jonathan
suggested.
“And where do you suppose we try, huh?” Rick's temper
was flaring up again. He was hot, sweaty and the stupid thing just
wouldn't move.
Taking a closer look at the chest, Jonathan suddenly started
fiddling in his jacket, earning himself two curious gazes. Finally
finding what he was looking for, he put a jewel-encrusted ankh into
the keyhole and twisted. Two distinct clicks could be heard. Trying
his luck again, Ardeth easily opened the chest.
“Where did you get that?”, Rick stared at Jonathan in
complete disbelief.
“That?...Ah, well...It just...”
“Jonathan.”
“At Hamunaptra. It looked like a valuable thing to have.
So...”, he trailed off when he saw, both Rick and Ardeth shake
their heads in exasperation.
“Well at least we have the key and can go now.”
Suddenly a muffled scream could be heard above. “Da...mmpf.”
