“That’s the last of the correspondence dealt with, Mr Weyland.” The secretary got to her feet, smoothing down her skirt and beginning the process of tidying up the desk she had been allocated. “Is there anything else you require of me?
The CEO of Weyland Yutani Industries shook his head. “No, the rest can wait until my usual secretary gets back. You don’t have the clearance to deal with the rest of her work.” He gave an annoyed huff. “It’s damned inconvenient her going sick like this, especially when her replacement is on holiday.”“Yes sir, shall I return to the secretarial pool then?”He nodded impatiently, “Yes… but before you go, make sure you…”Whatever he had been about to say was cut off by the shrill squeal of his comm. system. The young woman waited patiently as he dealt with the call. He was wearing an earpiece and she could hear only his side of the conversation but whatever they were discussing, he did not sound happy. He looked up suddenly, “You, girl… what was your name again?”“Marie, sir,” she told him politely. It was about the tenth time this afternoon she’d told him her name. Obviously she wasn’t important enough for him to bother remembering it. “Marie Jackson.”He returned his attention back to the call. They seemed to be talking about staffing problems and as he spoke, the young woman heard her name mentioned several times. Finally he ended the call. “Well that was not the news I wanted,” he said, “It turns out my usual girl is going to be off for several months and the replacement has decided to quit.” He shook his head in irritation at the inconvenience of it all. “She needn’t think she’ll be getting a good reference from me” he groused. “So it looks like I’m stuck with you.”Marie offered a polite smile that hid her inward elation and nervousness. This was her big chance and she could only hope she wouldn’t blow it. “I will do my best, sir,” she said reassuringly, “I learn quickly.”He nodded, “We’ll see,” he said, “Time will tell on that. Now go and make me some coffee.”*****Lieutenant Commander Rhiana scrolled through the text and images on screen uncomprehendingly. “So what?” the blonde Romulan asked. “He's had dealings with a Terran freight haulage company. Why is that important?”N'Sal resisted grinding her teeth. The other woman, Endeavour's second officer was a former high ranking Tal’Shiar operative and her question just served to reinforce the mercenary's opinion that said operatives were all as stupid as Hlai fowl. “That is what they want you to think,” she explained patiently. “What legitimate haulage firm has business amongst the outland systems?”Mention of the notoriously lawless sector of space outside the dominion of the Three Empires treaty caused Rhiana to raise an eyebrow as Sal had known it would. She opened her mouth to question what made N'Sal say such a thing, but the half breed cut her off. “I used to see their ships a lot out there.” She touched a control and a stylised WY logo filled the screen. “They weren't shy about announcing their presence.”The ex Tal’Shiar operative stared at the image in consternation. “Of course!” she muttered, “This is no ordinary freight haulier. It’s Weyland Yutani we’re talking about!” She shook her head in rueful disgust at her own lack of comprehension. Admittedly she was tired. She’d been awake all night going through Tal’Shiar records and carrying out her own investigation into Lieutenant Jonathan Price and what she’d found had been interesting to say the least. But that was no excuse for her lapse in concentration. “ N’Sal, I am sorry, I really need to wake up and knock my brain into gear.”The mercenary nodded, refraining from commenting on that, much as she was tempted to say something rude. "Weyland Yutani is an armament industry leader and what is more, they are the ones we tracked as the source of the payments made to Admiral Moore!"“They seem to be involved in a lot of things the authorities might consider unsavoury,” the blonde Romulan woman responded. “There have been Weyland Yutani vessels in this sector in the last few months but no filed flight plans anywhere near the Yautja hunting preserves.”“I wouldn't trust them to file an accurate flight plan anyway,” N'Sal retorted with a soft snort. She flicked to the next screen. “This is the really interesting stuff. Not only is there a financial trail from Weyland Yutani to Lieutenant Price via Admiral Moore, but...” she brought up the docking schedule. “One of their vessels was in dock at Starbase 24 less than a day before Price reported aboard this ship!”“How convenient,” Rhiana commented, sarcasm lacing her tone, “Another one of those lucky coincidences.”“Exactly!” N’Sal agreed, “Especially when you dig into the data behind Price's transfer orders. You're correct when you say they were signed off by Admiral Moore but they were never put through Personnel Services. I know I'm not Starfleet, but that doesn't seem right to me.Rhiana nodded slowly. “It isn't,” she confirmed. “Let's see if we can find out why.”Her companion hesitated. “Actually...”“You already know... How?”N'Sal shrugged self-consciously “Better you don't ask.” she muttered. Rhiana nodded, accepting that. All senior agents had their own sources, some of which were inevitably less than legitimate. “Go on.”“This is Price as he reported aboard.” A mug-shot, Price's ID appeared onscreen. “This is Price when he graduated elementary school. The face grows but the basic structure never changes.” One image overlaid another. “Computer, age juvenile image approximately twenty years and compare. Are these two images of the same person?”“Negative.”The Tal’Shiar officer and the Mercenary looked at one another. “In that case,” Rhiana mused. “Where is the real Jonathan Price?”*****It was several days before Marie got the chance she had been waiting for… several days of doing little more than making coffee, transferring calls and dealing with a little correspondence and invoicing – all the boring jobs a personal secretary was expected to do for her employer. The young woman was on her best behaviour, keeping quiet, listening carefully and following all her instructions to the letter. She needed to be extremely careful. Breaking cover now wold be disastrous. Starfleet Intelligence had invested a lot of time and effort in getting her this deep into the company. Quite how they had achieved her move from the secretarial pool to Mr Weyland’s office was something she was not sure she wanted to know.Today had been different right from the beginning. Her security upgrade had finally come through and instead of the usual inconsequential rubbish, her boss had thrown a pile of confidential reports at her and told her to deal with them. She’d done so with her usual care and efficiency and just when she’d thought she was done, he’d handed her a load more.“I’ll need these doing tonight,” Mr Weyland informed her crisply, getting up and shutting down his computer. “I take it that will not be a problem?”She looked up from her desk. “No sir, of course not. I’ll have to stay late though and I don’t have clearance to be here after business hours.”“That won’t be a problem,” he responded, “I’m on my way to a meeting now. I’ll talk to security on the way out and get it logged for you.”Smiling and thanking him, the young woman could not believe her luck at the unexpected opportunity. Settling down she got on with the work she had been assigned, at the same time keeping an eye on the clock. Best to wait until most people had gone home, she decided. The less people around, the less the chance of her being disturbed or caught. It was almost 8pm before she decided to act. Putting aside the report she had been working on, she reached into her bag, carefully pulling the lining aside to reveal a hidden pocket. Inside lay a data chip. Removing it, she inserted it into the computer console and typed in an access code. The computer chirped, a red light flashing and she held her breath as it flashed amber and eventually green. She was in.****Wow, chapter 65... I can't beleive the story has gone this far. It was meant to be a short story and it just kept on going. Admittedly, by the standards of other writers, my chapters are fairly short, but they are of a length that suit me and my writing style. I just wish my characters would behave themselves and not keep changing the plotline without letting me know first... very inconsiderate of them. Anyway, enough of that, hope youre enjoying the story. Please do leave a comment to let me know...
