With Kihr’yende’s defeat of the Guardian, the opportunity they needed appeared in front of them. The way to the nest chamber was momentarily unguarded. Seeing the opening, George gave the signal to advance before the remaining drones could close ranks again. Pushing their way through, hacking at anything in their path, the first of the Predators entered the nest chamber of the Queen. The rest of the party quickly followed, xenomorphs snapping at their heels as they belatedly fought to close the gap and prevent the intruders from gaining access to their queen.
Following immediately behind George, Kehlan entered the nest chamber and stopped dead. She stared at the queen, awed by its sheer size. She’d thought she had known what to expect, but this… this was something beyond even the very worst of her nightmares. The queen was enormous, at least several feet bigger than the one she had fought before and everything about her screamed deadly danger. Maybe twenty feet tall at the hip, her sleek, chitinous body glistened with a slime that accentuated her deadly lines. Like the drones, her oversized, eyeless head was phallic in shape, but unlike them, a huge crown-like crest extended back over her body, protecting her neck and spine. She was magnificent and deadly. The old Predator seemed to sense Kehlan’s thoughts. “The one we faced was a juvenile,” he told her matter-of-factly, “She was young and inexperienced. We were lucky… Very lucky.”Kehlan could only nod, understanding what he was not saying – that if they had faced a fully mature queen like this one, they would both be dead. The ovipositor protruding from the queen’s abdomen was like nothing the Klingon woman could have imagined. The bulbous, glistening egg sac extended many times her length, its weight supported by straps of some unknown substance hanging from the roof of the chamber. She could see it pulsing and as she watched in horrified fascination, a slime-coated egg slid from its tip. Kehlan shuddered. The queen might be the brains of the hive but she was also its prisoner, little more than a massive breeding machine, a biological production line, completely dependent on her offspring for care and protection. Under different circumstances she could almost have pitied the queen.Several Hunters came forward, ten of them in total, one warrior for each of the six limbs the queen possessed and two to secure her massive crown, keeping her head back and her jaws out of the way. Another two would secure her tail, preventing it being used as a weapon against them. Lengths of braided rope were coiled around their bodies, made of a substance unfamiliar to the Federation. Weighing very little it was also immensely strong as well as being resistant to the acid blood of the Kainde Amedha. Theirs would be the most honour in this hunt, but also the greatest risk. The task they had been assigned was a perilous one and each Hunter knew and accepted the danger. If today was the day that the Black Warrior summoned them to his halls then they would go fearlessly and without regret, secure in the knowledge that tales would be told of the glory of their Final Hunt.At a gesture from the Elder, Da’rian moved to one side of the queen and Kihr’yende the other. Their role would be one of support. They would watch over the other warriors, supervising the process and assisting where necessary to keep the queen under control as she struggled to escape her bonds. The rest of the warriors would act as guards, defending them and keeping back the Kainde Amedha drones so the capture team could work unmolested. With their blades retracted as they handled the ropes, they were essentially unprotected. Letting go of a rope to defend against an attacking drone would free the queen and get them all killed. It was the ultimate display of teamwork, each Hunter trusting his fellows to play their part correctly for the good of all.Still attached to her egg sac, the queen’s body was largely immobile but that did not make her safe to approach. Her claws, teeth and tail blade were sharp and lethal. Her tail lashing from side to side like some large and deadly feline, she swung her massive head, attempting to use it as a club but the Yautja were well used to this and dodged out of the way.Moving swiftly and competently, in one well practiced manoeuvre, the Yautja began the process of securing the queen for transport. Grappling hooks were engaged and thrown, each one finding its target. As the ropes were pulled taut and wrapped around her limbs ensuring she could not break free, the queen let out a high pitched screech of fury and frustration, thrashing desperately as she struggled ineffectually to free herself from her bonds. With their queen tangled in the Yautja ropes the attacking drones backed off. Instinct would not allow them to continue the attack. Even the slightest aggressive move on their part could get their captive queen killed and that was something they were genetically incapable of allowing. The queen must be preserved at all costs.Never letting go of the ropes, the Hunters securing the queen’s front limbs swapped sides, tying her arms criss-crossed against her chest, effectively cocooning her in a strait-jacket and preventing her from using her fore-limbs against them. Something about the manoeuvre incongruously reminded Kehlan of the May Day celebrations she had seen during a diplomatic visit to Earth a few years ago. Admittedly, she thought, the Alien queen made a very strange, skeletal maypole.Pulling a long, serrated knife free of the sheath strapped to the shin guard on his right leg, George moved in under the queen’s belly to cut her free of her ovipositor. She screamed in a combination of fury and agony as the blade bit into the membrane, struggling frantically to escape the pain and attack the hated enemy who sought to harm her and her brood. This would be one of the most dangerous moments for the team holding her in place. Once she was free of the egg sac, only the ropes – and the skill and determination of those who held them – would prevent the angry queen from going on a destructive rampage and killing them all.As the Elder worked, several of the marines were busy setting up pattern enhancers under the eagle-eyed supervision of Corporal Ryan. The marine was deadly serious now, no longer swearing or even laughing and joking with his companions. Combat engineering was his area of expertise and it was his responsibility to ensure that this part of the plan went as it should. The enhancers would amplify the transporter signal and allow Endeavour to lock onto the queen. Their placement was vital. Without them, this far underground and with mineral deposits in the rocks obscuring the ship’s sensors, any signal would be sketchy at best.“Kay-lan… NOW!” At the Elder’s shout, Kehlan moved forward, ready to play her part. It was her turn now. The task she had been given was a very simple one. All she had to do was place a Starfleet Combadge on the captive queen and then call for beam-up. Such a small, easy thing compared to the tasks that George and the other Hunters had been required to do. Which was no doubt, why it was THIS task that went horribly wrong in a way that none of them could have predicted.Fighting against the restraints, the queen turned her massive head with some difficulty to face the Klingon female standing in front of it. She hissed malevolently, slime dripping from her jaws as she opened them wide, allowing the secondary, inner jaw to emerge. The highly polished metal combadge glimmered slightly in the semi darkness as it was lit up by the phosphorescent bacterial glow emanating from the cave walls. Long distant memories surfaced in the queen’s mind. Something bright flashed in the moonlight and curiously the drone bent to investigate. A shiny, oddly shaped piece of metal lay partly hidden in the ruined foliage under the dead queen’s outstretched hand. The creature that was more than a drone yet not quite a queen had been operating on little more than instinct. Physical transformation had taken priority over mental development and its embryonic intelligence was only just beginning to awaken. It had known that the object was important but it had not completely understood its significance. No longer immature, the queen had years of hive rule behind her. Her mind and intellect were fully developed and she learned and adapted quickly. She had almost dismissed the creature approaching her as small and useless, fit only to host one of her offspring. Unlike the hereditary enemy, it was surely no threat to her and unworthy of her notice. One swipe of her claws and it would be gone. But the gleaming object it held in its pale, clawless hands was all too familiar. She did not comprehend the purpose of the shiny metal thing but it was clearly recognisable as the much hated symbol of her enemy, the killers of the previous queen and of her own children… the nemesis of her kind. A symbol she had come to associate with death and destruction. Fury rose up and filled her, along with an overwhelming need for vengeance. The enraged queen went berserk. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
