As was often the case first thing in the morning, San Francisco bay was shrouded in a low lying mist. From the office window on one of the upper floors of Starfleet Command Headquarters, the view of the Golden Gate Bridge rising up out of the clouds was rather beautiful. Not that Admiral Isis Portway was in any mood to appreciate it.
Early morning sunlight streamed in through the office window and the Admiral groaned, stifling a yawn and running a tired hand through her short sandy hair as she wondered if she was ever going to get off duty and get some sleep. She was getting too old to be pulling all-night sessions like this one she thought grumpily as she moved away from the window and approached the replicator. “Coffee, double espresso, no sugar.”The replicator was a new model and made barely a sound as it processed her order, materialising a small white cup and saucer, each marked with the insignia of Starfleet Command. Steam and the appetising aroma of fresh brewed coffee rose from its contents and the tired admiral sniffed appreciatively as she lifted the cup, carrying it back to her desk. She still had a significant amount of work to deal with before she could even consider going home and once again she wondered what had possessed her to accept the job as Director of Starfleet Intelligence, even on a temporary basis. The door chimed. That would be her aide, no doubt; Commander Edwin Thomas. Taking a quick sip of her coffee, she called out, “Come in.”The door slid open and sure enough the newcomer was her aide. Like her, Thomas had been on duty all night although it didn’t show. The younger officer was disgustingly bright eyed and bushy tailed, his uniform as smart and dapper as if he’d only just put it on. Not that she’d expect any different from her staff. The commander crossed the room and placed the tray he was carrying on the desk in front of her. “I’ve brought you some breakfast, Admiral.”She eyed the tray suspiciously. The food smelt good and her mouth was watering in anticipation. Cream cheese and smoked salmon, prepared just the way she liked it. Giving in to temptation she picked up a bagel. “Okay so… What have I done to deserve this? Or more to the point, how much trouble are you in?”“I just thought you’d be hungry after a long shift.” His innocent stare did not convince her in the least. She glared at him. “I’m not falling for that. What do you want, Edwin?”“Okay, okay…” He gave her a wicked grin before sobering. “We’ve had a request from FedKIN… marked urgent, Priority One.” He placed a padd down next to the tray.Portway sighed, putting down the bagel she’d been about to bite into. “What do they want?”“They have asked for all available files on a Lieutenant Jonathan Price.”“A straightforward request for information,” the admiral snapped, “Why are you bringing this to me? Just deal with it.”“That’s just it, Admiral,” her aide said calmly. Aware of just how long she had been on duty, he did not let her irritability bother him. “We did deal with it and it’s turned out to be anything but straightforward.”Portway frowned. “Explain.”“Well, Price was one of our trainee agents,” Thomas said. “He was a post graduate student at the academy, majoring in computer engineering. He wrote his thesis on interstellar surveillance algorithms or something like that. His grades and psych tests showed an aptitude for our line of work so we moved in and recruited him. He jumped at the chance.”“So he is definitely one of ours then,” Portway said thoughtfully. “Why are FedKIN enquiring about him?”“Well that’s where it gets complicated,” Thomas told her. “He had already been assigned to Endeavour so we told him to go ahead and accept the position while we prepared a training vacancy for him and put a cover story in place. Your predecessor planned to send him undercover to the Orion sector.” He stopped for a moment, looking down to check the data on his padd. “Problem is, if the information we have from FedKIN is correct… and it usually is… it looks very much as though either Price had an agenda of his own or he was working for someone else. Endeavour had a catastrophic containment failure in one of their cargo bays. The doors opened and several crew members were killed.”“I’m guessing it wasn’t accidental?” Portway asked grimly. She had not always been a desk officer and in her time as a ship’s captain, she had seen the results of explosive decompression. Even the thought of it was enough to make her shudder.“The bay was full of alien dignitaries at the time,” Thomas said, his own tone equally grim. Unlike the admiral, he had never served ship-side but the images in the report he’d received were gruesome. “The door opened without warning. Transporters were offline, the sirens didn’t go off and all of the alarms and safeties were disconnected. Yes, it was deliberate.”The admiral frowned. She didn’t like this at all. “And they think it was Lieutenant Price. Do we have an agent on board Endeavour to confirm any of this?”The aide nodded, “Yes Admiral. We’ve contacted him and he confirmed that the incident did occur and that Lieutenant Price is being held in the brig on charges of treason, murder and sabotage.”Portway sat down and let out a heavy sigh. The thought of a Starfleet agent doing such a thing was repugnant to her. An agent was supposed to bring back information, nothing more. She wondered momentarily if the agent had been recruited by Section 31 without her knowledge; this was certainly far more their style. “Is there evidence of his guilt?”“According to our agent he has confessed to the crimes, albeit under duress,” Thomas sighed. “Apparently Security Captain Krang threatened to use a mind sifter on him.” He shuddered. “Have to say, I’d confess to pretty much anything if they threatened me with one of those things.”Despite the seriousness of the situation, Portway was unable to suppress a wry smile at that. The Klingon Security Captain was very good at his job but he did not always play by the rules. That was fine by Portway; neither did the criminals. “That does sound like Krang,” she admitted. “I suppose, officially at least, I will have to reprimand him. Mind sifters are illegal in the Federation and for good reason. In this case though, I can’t honestly say I blame him.”Thomas nodded agreement before continuing. “FedKIN already have evidence connecting Admiral Moore to their investigation. We know that he was the one who assigned Price to Endeavour. Now that in itself is not an issue, it’s his job. What is an issue is that he also received a substantial payoff from the Weyland Yutani Corporation.”The admiral swore at that news. Accepting payment or other financial incentives from outside corporations was against all the rules. At the very least Moore would be relieved of his command and charged with corruption and accepting bribes. At worst the charge would be treason. “Admiral Moore voted against admitting the Yautja to the Federation,” she remembered. “He claimed that they were inimical to the ideals of the Federation, that they were too dangerous to be allowed into our space.”“We have agents inside Weyland Yutani,” Thomas said thoughtfully, “Not as deep as we’d like and so far we haven’t had much from them. The organisation is paranoid and extremely careful; getting people into a position of trust has proved difficult. But Moore has been seen at their headquarters on more than one occasion in the last few months.”“Hmm, interesting.” Portway lifted her now almost completely cold cup of coffee and drank it down, grimacing at the taste. “Why does temperature make such a difference to its enjoyment?” she wondered idly. The question was both rhetorical and irrelevant, nothing more than a momentary distraction from a difficult subject. “Is there anything else I need to know? The aide hesitated and took a deep breath, knowing his next words were about to put the proverbial cat among the pigeons. “It gets worse, I’m afraid. Lieutenant Jonathan Price’s body was found a few days ago. It was in an advanced state of decomposition. It looks like he’s been dead for approximately three months. Whoever is on board that ship, he isn’t Price and he isn’t one of ours.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
