Aware of his Klingon companion’s sudden unease, George drove his massive wrist blades deep into the chest of the last of the fleeing beasts as it belatedly attempted to follow its companions into the safety of the tunnels. It was in his way and besides, every hard meat they killed now was one less they had to hunt down later. It fell twitching at his feet and he kicked it away from him, careful to avoid the puddle of acidic blood it had left on the ground as he moved closer to his friend. Her body temperature had dropped slightly, he noted in some concern. It was almost as though she was going into shock, yet he could see no sign of serious injury.
“Kay-lan! You are well?”The sound of his deep, growling voice penetrated the rising panic, breaking its hold on her. Nothing would harm her while George was with her. She knew that for certain. The half Klingon woman took a deep shuddering breath, pulling herself together with visible effort. This was neither the time nor the place to tell him that story. Besides, he would not understand, would think her weak. “I… I’m okay.”Not completely convinced, the Elder nevertheless accepted her answer although he resolved to discuss it with her after the mission. There was no time now, they needed to get moving. Every moment they delayed gave the queen more time to prepare and lessened their chances of success. First though he needed a status report from the other team leaders. Retracting his long blades he brought up his right arm, the one with the computer console built in, and flicking open the protective cover with the claws on his left hand, he typed in a quick query and sent it to Kihr’yende and Da’rian.A reply came back from Da’rian almost immediately and he read it with satisfaction. ‘Encountered and destroyed three groups of Kainde Amedha. Tunnels clear. No fatalities. Approaching rendezvous point now.’Kihr’yende’s reply, coming in a moment later was very similar. ‘Detonation successful. Main egg chamber destroyed, outlying sites cleansed. No casualties. Heading to rendezvous point.’The explosions had been Kihr’yende’s doing then. He’d thought as much. Unseen behind his mask, the Elder flared his mandibles in a pleased smile. His son had done well, as had Da’rian although he expected nothing less of either of them. Transmitting an acknowledgement, he closed the panel and turning his attention back to his team, gave the signal to get moving again.Carefully the group made their way through dark corridors that were ominously still and devoid of life, heading towards the central nest chamber where the queen was waiting for them. The only sounds were of their own breathing and the occasional faint splash as feet stepped in puddles of foetid water. Faint scritching sounds, the clicks and taps of claws on stone walls echoed through the empty tunnels, yet the sounds were distant and nothing came near them.Moving with silent grace, George led the way, Kehlan at his side and two Yautja directly behind them with the marines coming next and the final two Yautja acting as rear guard. A slight change in the ambient noise caught George attention and he stopped to listen, holding up a hand to halt the group. The Elder growled - a low pitched sound designed to travel over distance. An answering growl came back and George relaxed. The voice was Da’rian’s.Sure enough, as they rounded a bend in the tunnel, Da’rian and his team emerged from an adjoining passageway. They were now very close to the queen’s nest site. A short journey would see them reach the large cavern that led into the queen’s chamber. Carefully the Hunters made their final approach to the antechamber. Nothing obstructed their approach. Everything seemed calm, almost peaceful but they all knew that it was nothing more than an illusion. However bad the previous fighting had been, the worst was still to come. They were only a few metres away when the Elder stopped, holding up a hand for silence. George was a good leader and he had done this many times before. He had survived more Hunts than he could count and more than one queen lived in captivity as a result of his leadership. His words more for the benefit of the marines than the highly experienced Elite Predators, he swiftly ran through the final plan, ensuring that everyone knew their place and what they must do.They would meet Kihr’yende and his team in the antechamber, George told them and from there they would approach the nest site. “We can expect to be attacked,” he warned them, “This close to the nest, the hard meats will be frantic to defend their queen. We must fight our way through and when we have done so, each of you must focus on your assigned task. If you wish to live, then you must follow your orders exactly. No matter what happens, do not deviate in any way or take matters into your own hands unless you are instructed to do so. Do you have any questions?”There were none and satisfied, the Elder gave the order to start moving again. As he had warned them, they were attacked within seconds of entering the ante-chamber. Huge numbers of drones swarmed into the chamber, rushing to the attack, accompanied by something bigger and even more terrifying than they were. The creature standing in front of Kehlan was not a queen but nor was it any type of drone she was familiar with. Rather, it appeared to be something in between. Lacking the extra front arms of the queen, it was significantly larger than a standard drone and sported a very impressive crest. She took a deep breath. Whatever it was, it had to die. Steeling herself, she attacked and die it did, but not easily.“What in the name of Kahless was that thing?” Kehlan demanded to know, panting for breath as the creature finally fell dead. She was not sure if it was the worst thing she had ever fought but it certainly came close.“We call them Nrak’ytara… the Guardians,” George told her, lashing out at another one of the monstrous things as he spoke. “They are the protectors of the queen, her bodyguards. We are very close to her now.”Kehlan understood. If they could just break through this one last barrier they would be in the nest chamber where the queen was waiting for them. The most dangerous part of the mission would begin then… to secure the xenomorph queen for transport. Once they had her bound, the creatures would back off, unable and unwilling to risk any harm to their precious queen. Once they had her bound… it sounded so easy in principle. Yet the queen was deadly and even the slightest mistake, the slightest inattention to detail would result in the death of one or more of the team. It was inevitable, George had told her, that Hunters would die at this stage. The capture of a queen had never been achieved without fatalities. There was a momentary lull in the fighting as Kihr’yende and his team arrived and the Kainde Amedha turned to engage the newcomers. It did not last long. The battle intensified again, seeming to go on and on, like some endless danse macabre - dark skeletons moving in time to the eerie sounds of battle and Death watching over them all, waiting to lay claim to their souls. A wave of exhaustion washed over Kehlan as more and more of the Kainde Amedha attacked her. She had no idea how much time had passed. It could have been minutes, it could have been hours. No matter how many she killed, the creatures just kept coming and coming. The earlier fight had been bad enough; this one could only be described as nightmarish. There was no time to stop, even for a moment. Adrenaline flooding through her system was the only thing keeping her going… adrenaline and survival instinct. Surrender was not an option. Surrender meant death and dishonour… or worse, to become a host for the parasites. No, she was Klingon; she would not allow herself to be taken. Shaken by the morbid turn her thoughts were taking, she gritted her teeth and somehow finding the energy to keep going, she raised her blade and hacked at another hard meat.A spray of neon green blood caught Kehlan’s attention in the semi darkness and she turned just in time to see George go down, overwhelmed by a writhing sea of black creatures. “GEORGE!” Letting out a shriek of sheer fury, she screamed his name, hacking at everything that got in her way as she attempted to get to him. If he was hurt or even worse… No! She couldn’t even think it. He HAD to be alright!Across the other side of the cavern, both Kihr’yende and Da’rian also saw the danger to their Elder and moved to assist him. In some circumstances assisting another Hunter could be considered dishonourable, implying that he was incapable and incompetent. Better an honourable death than that. Not today. Outnumbered as they were and with every warrior needed, there was no shame in accepting help. Not that Kihr’yende cared about that. The Yautja in trouble was his Elder… his father and he would not stand by while the accursed hard meats ripped him to pieces!Their concern was unnecessary. With a roar, George came to his feet again, erupting from the pile of Kainde Amedha bodies. He was bleeding from several wounds but seemed otherwise unharmed as he ploughed straight back into the battle.****A quick word of explanation. The Guardians that George mentions are of course the Praetorians. The term “Praetorian Guard” though is a human one and it did not seem like something a Yautja would say, so I decided to name them Guardians… or Nrak’ytara in the Yautja language.
Thank you to Wraith Sympathiser for the very encouraging pm. It kept me going when I was close to giving up on this story. And if you’re reading this… the fight scenes over the last few chapters have been really difficult to write and I've put a lot of time and effort into it.. a little feedback would be much appreciated.
