"I don't care." Colt repeated.
Defenses back, though all in embittered facial expressions and tone, she spat. "Bull... How could you not care?"
"How long have you been a girl?"
Geri furrowed her brow, thinking about that. "Umm, I think I started five or so years.." her words tapered off seeing Colt shake his head.
"No. I meant, how long have you been a girl not appear as one?" He corrected his words with further meaning.
Geri whispered. "All my life."
Hand cupped at his ear. "I'm sorry?"
"All my life!" She shouted to the sky.
Colt smiled and nodded. "I've known you for somewhere close to two years now. I put the work in of being friends, missy, but I wanted more. I still want more." He let that sink in. "Geri... I agree, that.. that changes things, but, only a little. You've never shown any side of yourself that that part of you matters, not to me nor anyone else, I assume." Douglas then asked. "Geri... Can you and everyone else please stop making assumptions of me, and just let me be myself?"
Geri nodded. "I'm sorry, Colt. You're right. I did jump to conclusions."
Colt sighed. "And, I'm sorry too. I know why you do. Everyone can't handle uniqueness, for whatever reason they choose. But you can't lump us all in as the same. Just because I don't understand you, doesn't mean I hate you. I like you... I actually more than like you."
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying, let's start over." He stood, then reached to help her up. "Geri Simmons.. I'm Jeffrey Douglas; I think you're hot.. Will you go out with me?"
It was all consuming. Jeffrey Douglas was her first crush. They had minimal contact with each other that entire third grade school year. But each time had been cherished. The group projects at school, the paired projects. That time Jeffrey had asked to borrow a pencil, but he didn't give it back. Then a week later, he remembered he'd borrowed it and gave it back. The time he'd mumbled "Thanks" when she said "Bless you" after he'd sneezed.
Away from school, there had been but two times... Jeffrey bought her a Bomb Pop at the convenient store. He'd gone in with his friends and paid for them. He counted each head; noticed her.
"Do you want one?" He asked with a smile.
The other time had been Jeffrey's birthday party. The whole class had been invited to The Shore Aquarium. He didn't notice her too much at the party. At the time, all third-grade boys who showed any interest in girls liked Thema Jones. She was pretty cute; big brown-eyes, a nice smile, petite. She was like a living hot chocolate all warm and sweet. She, Geri, could not compete with that, being not in the right body at the time.
But take a look at her now! She never would have thought she'd end up with Jeffrey Douglas. Never. And she never thought that she would ever hear him say those words that he'd said to her out in the woods that afternoon. It was romantic. It was unexpected. Honest. At least she'd hoped so, as she lay snug in her bed with a grin plastered to face. She was tired but happiness wouldn't let her sleep.
With a single sentence, Colt erased so much hurt.
When Geri came back to Los Angeles, the kids liked her; thought she was pretty - - some even said beautiful! It was embarrassing, but only a bit. But it didn't last. One boy, one stupid thoughtless boy looked at with a double-take. He looked really closely at her. Then put it together. The teasing, abuse.. it had been so cruel.
Colt seemed in his own world, noticing none of it insofar as the reason why. He just assumed she was being bullied. Kids thought she was a lesbian because of her shorter hair. Whatever the reason Colt had as an excuse, must still be in effect for him; he still does not recognize her as she was.
Geri would not ask. She couldn't. What if the answer was mean? What if Colt was merely building up to some big prank on her? The other kids do it. He could join in and view the teasing as everyone's way of relieving stress over someone too different from themselves to accept. No. That made no sense. Back when she first came back he had stuck up for her from time to time. Amy took over for him as a full-time defender. Which seemed fine to Colt, as he pursued her friendship. Which she gave readily.
The cheerful, straightforward force of Jeffrey Douglas had stopped a majority of the teasing. Simply by being her friend. And underneath it all, there was a desire for more.
The only time Geri dated was if they went to another school, or were older. Juniors really like her. But, alas, there was always that thing she had to tell them about... The thing that got her beat bloody by the first guy she was ever serious with. Colt said he doesn't care. He's unlike any other. And as she lay grinning painfully in her sleep, she couldn't wait for the next day. The day they officially step out as boyfriend and girlfriend.
The alarm went off in her bedroom. She hit the silencer. Geri was already awake. Going to school had stopped feeling like a chore since getting together with Colt. Suddenly food had better taste, the air was fresh as new nature, even smells were only the finest life had to offer. And touch... She became closer to an angel's existence with each touch from him. And visually was obvious. Colt has got to be top 5 of the hottest guys at school. She'd argue first, but others would say Ryan Reynolds as the hottest, what with that strawberry-blond hair of his, and those brownie-colored eagle-eyes. But, who cares about exotic. Colt is still number one.
Jumping into the shower, she power washed like she was running late. She'd broke into a euphoric sweat while she slept having had one of those Rated-R dreams. Geri hit the usual pause after bathing. Which scent? Her mother bought her all these fabulous lotions and sprays for Christmas, and she has been gradually emptying the bottles.
'Orange says you're sweet and refreshing. But he commented on how pretty the Sweet Pea was...' That she set down. If Colt liked it that much it would be saved for dates. Grabbing a different bottle, she fended off ashy flesh with summer pear. It's Spring, sure, but pear in any season is good. "Okay. Hair up or down?" Her hazel gaze slanted to the door when hearing her brother's footsteps. She rolled her eyes knowing what was coming next. Hurriedly slipping into her long jean skirt and logo tee, she exited the bathroom, tongue out, then crossed the hall to her bedroom to brush her hair.
Pitta-Patta drummed on the window glass, luring her towards it like a Siren's song. "Are you fucking kidding me, rain?!"
"I'll drive you to school."
Geri's words tumbled out like a drunkard leaving a club. "Well.. I guess.. you could.."
Hector left the bathroom. He leaned against the door frame of his sister's bedroom. "What? You never cared before."
"It's just that Colt and I usually go together."
"So. I'll swing by his place and pick him up."
Geri paled. "Are you insane? Do you know how weird that would be for him, having his girlfriend's brother take him to school?"
"No. How weird?"
"A lot." She said it as though throwing her words like an item of clothing or the brush, still in her hand.
"He's gonna have to get used to me some time."
"...I'll call over and see."
"Tch. You just want an excuse to call him."
Grinning, she turned her back on him to dial Colt's cellphone. Hector rolled his eyes, but he smiled. He likes seeing his sister happy and excited for the day. And for the past week she has been.
"Good morning." Geri said into the phone. "I slept great." She left out the reason why being a vivid dream. "Umm, I don't know if you've looked out the window yet, but it's raining; Hector wants to know if he should come get you when he takes me to school? Or were you riding with your brother?" She knows that's likely the case.
Hector left the doorway to get dressed. His first class isn't until much later, but if he's taking her to school, he's got to get on city clothes.
"He said he's fine with it; that you two should get along." She listened. "Ok. Umm... twenty minutes? I still have to eat and brush."
"What are you having?" Colt asked. "We can sync breakfasts like we're eating together."
"How do you feel about Cinnamon Toast Crunch?"
"Great. We actually have a box."
"Cool. I'm going down now, let me know when to start."
"Ok. Bathroom needs then I'll be down in five."
The call ended with intentions to call back. Geri headed downstairs to the kitchen; she grabbed all the necessities: bowl, spoon, cereal, milk then walked them over to the kitchen table. She whistled a pop song; glancing at her phone while setting down each item. Colt called her back when she was in the middle of checking her backpack. Taking the call, she told him she was ready.
They laughed over the ASMR of fixing the cereal holding their phones close enough to the activity. However they both agreed that hearing people eat was such a cringe. Colt had a half a bowl more, she chose a slice of blueberry toaster pastry.
"Well?" Asked Hector when he entered the kitchen.
"He says it's fine." She slipped into her flats, then recalled the weather and got out her chunky hightops sneakers.
Hector exited the kitchen, eating a slice of toast; she was through tying her sneakers. She dashed upstairs to brush her teeth and came down two minutes later, ready to go. Geri swiped an umbrella from the holder by the front door; Hector was a typical guy, simple strolling through weather as though it was never anything but pleasantly sunny. They climbed into the car and off they went to the Douglas home.

"What is tartar sauce anyway?" Geri examined her fish stick that's covered in white sauce in question.
Troy replied. "Mayo, lemon, and pickles."
"There's capers and herbs too. My little brother makes it all the time."
"Hunh. It's delicious, I know that much." Biting off the coated area, she dunked it a second time. "You gonna eat yours?" She asked Colt. He bought lunch from school today.
"It's all yours. I prefer ketchup."
Amy grimaced. "Bleh. How can you even eat the fish sticks? That processed crap."
To Colt, Geri said. "There's one in every crowd."
"Tell me about it." Colt violently shook up his milk then opened it, taking a long drink from it.
Geri watched, mesmerized by his throat muscles working as he does this. Remembering where they are when hearing a loud laugh, she snapped out of it and continued with lunch.
Amy ask what everyone's plans were for the weekend.
"Geri and me are going to the batting cages." Colt stated. He left out the part where he'd like for Amy and Troy not to be there.
"Shopping. My mom thinks the holes in my jeans are accidents. Nevermind that I told her it's not." Troy shoved around his green beans.
"I'll go with you two." She suddenly looked perplexed when receiving wild-eyed glares from Geri and Colt. "What? I know how to do it. Swing the stupid stick, run the bases."
"There are no bases, you just hit the ball."
"That's even more lame than running the bases. At least that's cardio."
"Then don't go." Colt chided.
"I can go anywhere I want." Amy went into full brat-mode at the drop of a dime.
"Yeah, but you remember, Ames, you had to get that thing removed over the weekend." Her friend informed her.
"What thing?"
Geri smiled sweetly. "That painful butt-out scab imprint on your ass."
It suddenly dawned on her. Sucking in a breath, head back, she smacked her forehead. "Ohh! Oh, right. That. I'll just go elsewhere." Put-out she mumbled. "Sports are dumb, anyway."
Geri felt her heart sail upon Colt brushing his hand against her hand before briefly, under the cover of table and a pocket of darkness he took it into his own giving it the lightest squeeze. A date! Yes! The first truly official date. Okay, so it's not the most romantic place created by man. But, that he'd asked her based on knowing that she likes baseball, makes it quite romantic. She dared any girl to say otherwise.
"So, cages... yawn." Oh, Amy. Always the volunteer. "Where's the wine-n-dine? The dark places? Who bats?"
"We're putting a flip on romance." Colt said smugly. "Instead of mini golf, we bat." Geri nodded. "Instead of movies, we Netflix and chill in the backseat of my brother's car."
Amy blushed. That did sound really sweet. Gavin never brought her to his backseat. It's so cozy to think about. Although, she still prefered mini golf. It's fun. It's neon.
"And, we do have dark places for making out."
Geri blinked at that. Unless it was so passionate that she had an out of body experience each time, she's never been in any dark places.
"So.. shush."
'He was just shutting up Amy... But, maybe he was hinting that he'd like to find a dark place to make-out with me.' She slanted an eye at Colt's profile. 'Don't be shy. You can definitely kiss me a lot - - a lot alot.' She thinks as hard as she can. 'Or, maybe he doesn't want to? Maybe he's into me, but not that into me yet? What if he never is? What if he finds me gross like all guys?' She frowned.
As if on cue, a guy walked up behind her and gave the back of her head a rough shove. "Hey! You shithead, you wanna die?" She fixed her hair.
Colt was up from his seat. "He clearly does." He's never met the brute, but the prick was about to get to know a side of the blue ninja rather well.
"No. Ignore it." Geri latched onto his shirt.
"I can't. Whether you're my girlfriend or a friend, or just someone on the street I've never met, he has no reason to touch you." He got up from his seat, this time uninterrupted and he bounded over to the offender.
Everyone in the cafeteria watched in murmur but quickly hush themselves to hear what's going to be said. But Colt spoke so quietly that only a dog could have heard it. Whatever was said the guy and two of his friends hadn't bothered Geri Simmons since.
Saturday rolled around without any other incidents over the school week.
"I gotta admit - - but don't say anything," Amy was saying into the phone. "That was pretty hot what Colt did in school."
"Yeah?"
"Definite. All the girls are cruising him now; I wonder what he said to make those dogs behave?"
"Wish I knew."
Her shock was loud though silent. "You didn't ask?"
"No." Geri shook her head, changing the position of her phone from one ear to the other. "I thought it might embarrass him, if he didn't volunteer it."
Amy made a thoughtful sound. "You'd better say something about the two of you dating, or one of those fluttery little airheads will stop simping after him and just go after him."
Geri wondered about that. Would they? And if they did, would Colt respond to it? Give them hope? She shook off her worry. "In time. I just, I think we need a bit more time together before letting others know."
"Why?" Amy couldn't fathom a plausible reason. They like each other, they want to date and currently are. What's the big deal?
"If people know, they'll tease him." She stated. "And on top of that, he hasn't kissed me deeply yet. Just shy pecks.. me too, to him. If we're just trying this out, why cause such a commotion? Because we'll both get teased if we break up right away."
"You're gonna make yourself sick worrying about everyone. Make you happy first. And you take the initiative. Maybe Colt thinks you don't wanna kiss that way yet."
Geri let out a sigh through her nose. Perhaps? She thought, could Amy be right? Scratching a hand through her hair, she then yanked it back like it hurled her negative thoughts with each pushed strand. "You're right. I'm gonna finish getting ready, don't call me for two hours. Bye."
"Bye."
She hung up. Changing out of her robe into date clothes; she braised the sides of her hair then yanked it into a messy bun at the back of her head. She examines the look, pleased with the results; she did make a note to grow her hair out a bit more over the summer. She gave herself a visual once over, nodded to confirm she liked it, then she left the house to wait for her date.
...
"What do I get?" Geri asked.
They're playing In A Row. Basically they challenge how many balls they believe they can hit before a miss. And she won by stating a boast of 15 in a row. Colt's good, but he wasn't sure about 15 from the start. He has to warm-up and get used to the speed.
Colt gave her a cocky grin. "What do you want? Foot rub?"
"Oh ho ho, no one touches the feet. I'm ticklish."
"Mmm?" He seemed to be storing that nugget of knowledge away for later use. "Hand massage?"
Flexing her hand that's gripping the smooth wooden bat, she knows how pained they get after so long. "I accept. And you?"
Colt shrugged. "I'll get back to you; take your turn, Simmons."
'Please let it be a kiss... I'll give it readily! Of course, I could have asked for one if I complete the challenge.' She jumped suddenly as a white orb whizzed by.
"Ohh! And that's a miss right from the start." Colt mimicked a commentator, changing his voice when speaking as another guy. "She was our front runner, but still she let that one go Steve. I saw it Drew, I saw."
Amused, she looked at him with duck lips poked out. "Are you done? Or will you take your turn, smart alec?"
Her boyfriend got up from the bench with a lofty air about him. "He's a contender, Jeffrey Douglas." He continued to tease being a commentator. "Good looks, and batting skills, what can't he do Drew?"
"Rope it in. He's such a ham, right Nancy?" She joined in taking a seat on the bench in his place. " That's right, Jill. If we're lucky, he bats as badly as he boasts."
The "ham" snickered. "We are so made for each other." He took his position.
Offhandedly she said to herself. "I've always like that name, Drew." To her date she asks. "What about you? Any girl names you're fond of?"
Colt wondered about that, and the fifth ball sailed past him.
"And that would be our champ taking a fall from grace." She clapped.
"You distracted me. You're an underhanded dirt-thrower."
"That I am." She has her own lofty persona to brandish.
Colt handed her the bat, then took a seat beside her. "Hmm... I've always liked Liz. Not Elizabeth, just Liz. It's so Mic drop." He seemed to want to say something but chose not to. "You're up." He said instead.
"Alright. Distraction free; this time I won't miss." In position, she declared. "Eight straight."
"Challenge."
The balls flew out of the machine, each one.. two.. three.. was met with a bat and sailed away into a mesh fence. The balls were like kids going down a slide at the playground.
"Nicely done!" Colt cheered when Geri reached 12 before she missed. They gave each other a high-five at the bench. "Alright. Since you hit twelve, I'm going for that fifteen."
"Challenge."
He got seven.
Geri wiggled her hand about, silently instructing him to make with the rewarding. "Pay particular attention to the hand with the pen and pencil callous; it's always getting cramped."
Colt walked over to her, kneeling with his head bowed. "Yes, my queen."
Geri smiled, not at the gesture, that was embarrassing. But at the tone. Colt has such a handsome voice. She watched him while he took a seat beside her; her hand taken into his then he worked away the tension with expertise.
"My grandfather needs a lot of maintenance." He explained to her unseen wonder about his unknown skill set.
Geri giggled. 'Oh my gawd. I feel so lucky; how can this be real?' She questioned. She was giggling for Pete's sake! She does not giggle. A gasp escaped her mouth when her boyfriend brought her hand up to his lips, but he did nothing just held it there.
Colt met her gaze; cheeky as always, he said. "Did I make your heart flutter?"
With a blush, she lied. "No."
Leaning towards her, he whispered. "How 'bout now?"
Geri could have leaped from her body; magically produced pen and paper and wrote home. Oh what a magnificent kiss he gave her! His hand held her's to his chest, the other hand found a place to rest against her back between the shoulders. His lips parted, just the slightest breath escaped his mouth into her's, mingling their oxygen before they stole each other's breath away. Parting, it was brief, because the pair then lunged at each other kissing deeply both physically and emotionally. Hands planted firmly on cheeks. Lip balm smeared. The taste of mints present since they had no meal yet.
It was to good to be true! But it was true. The kiss was real. Colt's feelings were real. His tongue in her mouth was very real.
'I'm sixteen years old, and life is good.' She thought with an eternal smile.
