Chapter Six
Learning
After the language barrier was broken down between us life became…'normal'. Well, as normal as it could get for living on a different planet with no one else like you on it.
My days were filled with learning about their culture, their history, their philosophies as well as their traditions. Yautja, as I came to know them, were heavily weighed down by traditions but, Thaiden was trying to change some of that.
Traditionally all male students would train until they were old enough to go out and take down the most dangerous and honorable thing they knew of, the Kainde Amedha, or 'hard meat'. I didn’t want to know about them because I knew I would start to worry about Boedog so I left that file closed. He was, after all, a young male training to go on that hunt.
At first Thaiden was skeptical about letting me learn everything about the Yautja, as if I could one day escape and use my knowledge to come back and take some sort of revenge. I laughed, unintentionally, when he finally explained to me why the information I could get a hold of was so limited. If I returned home, for whatever reason, all the things I had learned would die with me. I had come to respect him and his people, the more I knew the more I understood them and that made it easier to relate to them, to adopt their culture and habits. I was even okay with the right of passage even though it could end in death.
I looked at it more like the Spartans of Greece and explained as much to the three of them. At one point in history there was a group of people much like the Yautja; babies had to be strong and normal when they were born or else they’d be thrown over the edge of a cliff. Only the strong could be Spartans, all weaklings were cast aside. It was extreme but, it made sure that their people were always healthy and could always defend themselves.
The three ‘people’, who had started to become my family, wondered why that approach on life wasn’t what we lived by in modern times.
“Because weaklings somehow survived, grew up and passed on their cowardly genes,” I replied. It was harsh, the human race had fine things but, seriously? Overpopulation, out of control diseases and cancer? Even I knew that Alzheimer’s didn’t come around until the 1930’s because the genetic pool wasn’t varied and clean enough.
A tap on my door signaled that Boedog was finally awake again and I almost skipped to the portal to open it. I had somehow passed twenty-eight hours without him.“Morning,” I said with a smile when I saw his familiar face. He nodded to me, still partly asleep and bade me to go with him.
Bath time was lazy time, not fun sexy time. I was more than okay with it, though, our last romp still had me satisfied.
Boedog was really tired, even after his morning bath, and I was starting to wonder why. He wasn’t carrying himself like he usually did, his shoulders were slightly slumped and he was walking slower too. Something was wrong.
By the time his breakfast, my dinner, came around I couldn’t take it anymore. “What’s bothering you?” I asked gently. He had stayed silent through our normal morning routine and I was starting to worry, he never acted like that before.
“I am focusing for the task ahead,” he answered simply then continued to eat. At first I didn’t know what he meant but then it dawned on me, his hunt was going to be soon and that alone should have had some affect on him. Even though it was still a ways out, our day before of romping around had to remind him of what he and I would both be losing should he not come back.
“Do not worry,” he reassured me after seeing the look on my face, “Tox will be with me.”
“Talking about me already?” Tox asked as he rounded the corner and sat down with us. Just from the few seconds I had seen him I could tell something was bothering him, too. He seemed to fidget more than normal and he was just as silent as Boedog.
“Toby,” Boedog said almost absent mindedly. I gave him my full attention and waited until he was ready to continue. He looked down at his plate then at me with an intense stare. “I want you to know what we are going up against.”
I paled considerably at his words. I had specifically avoided the subject altogether because I really didn’t want to know. It was hard enough knowing that there were sentient aliens in the universe, I didn’t want to know what sort of creature they hunted for their right of passage, one dangerous enough to keep their population continuously level and manageable since they started to hunt it countless generations ago.
“Do not worry,” he said again. “If you know what we are going up against and see what we can do, you can rest assure that we will come back Blooded Warriors.”
And that brought up another issue. I had read about the return ritual and I started to wonder again if he would leave me for a female or expect me to be okay with sharing him.
“About that…” I said trailing off. “Can we talk later? Alone?” When he nodded at me I said nothing more and we ate in silence until we were all finished.
Tox went back to his room to meditate and I took Boedog back to his room so we could talk. I didn’t know how to start the conversation and we sat in silence for several moments.
“Boedog?” He looked at me, both of us sitting on his bed facing each other. “When you come back…” how could I put it? “You will be blooded, right?” he nodded at me but his head was tilted. “And when you’re blooded you can finally…mate, right?”
Realization dawned on him and he leaned back, understanding what I was getting at. “I will be able to mate with who I choose,” he replied.
“Does that mean you’ve been breaking the rules with me?” I asked, suddenly worried that I had ruined his tradition and had opened some way of him getting denied what he had worked so hard for.
“No,” he said flatly.
“But-” he raised a hand and I fell silent.
“There aren’t many like me, Toby,” he started to explain. “Not in the sense that you know me. There are plenty of males out there, young, old, blooded and unblooded that have found ways of release before they are eligible to mate and more often than not, to take advantage of one another.”
It was my turn to tilt my head to the side in question. He sighed at me and tried explaining again.
“I am the way I am because that’s how I’ve always been. Females have never held any appeal to me, even now. I accepted this long ago but kept it secret. There are other males out there, my age and rank, and others, Elders, that would try to take advantage of me.”
Then realization dawned on me. It was just like back home, those priests who used little boys for their sick purposes. “Thaiden wouldn’t-” I started but was stopped immediately.
“Thaiden is honorable, much more than many others in his position.” I nodded and relaxed a bit.
“So, females hold no appeal for you?” I asked making sure that he really wasn’t interested.
“They do not,” he said and ended it in a whisper. He leaned toward me and touched his forehead to mine. “You are for me, my Toby,” he said quietly and purred to emphasize his contentedness.
I smiled and nuzzled his head in return.
