“Yes, I thought that was the plan in the first place. What difference is this going to make?” I sighed and draped myself around the banister as I waited for Harry to finish his phone call. We were supposed to be out shopping this morning but so far it had been nothing but delays. I was gagging to get out there; weeks in the same set of clothes had become more depressing than it sounded. For the last few days I had been slobbing about in various shirts belonging to Harry, I hadn’t asked if he minded me wearing them, but he in return had not shown any objection. I could hear the phone conversation was getting more heated by the minute; it was hard not to listen in as Harry was already quite annoyed. “In my opinion this would be a great mistake, I don’t believe she’s ready for that.” I pricked my ears up at that point, presuming he was discussing me. “...No, no that’s not what I meant at all. I am just stating that I think this will be a big mistake, you know my feelings about Valentine and...Yes I understand.” The door opened with a bang and he seemed surprised to see me. “Shellie, I thought you were upstairs...”
“I got bored waiting.” I shrugged, sliding my hand up and down the banister.“Sorry, an important phone call that I had to take.”
“About me?” I raised an eyebrow, why exactly did he have such a hatred for Rafe; I guessed it was from all he had already heard from my relationship. Rafe was an easy person to despise.
“I imagine you already know the answer to that seeing as you were listening at the door.”
“I bloody wasn’t!” I frowned. “I was waiting here; I’m all ready to go.”
“In my shirt and little else! Go and put some jeans on.”
I humphed up the stairs, he was right, going out in just a shirt might have looked a little odd, especially next to the impeccably dressed Harry. I pulled on my jeans and headed out of the door. He seemed distracted during the car journey, as always we had a driver in the black cab, I presumed to be a perk of being a Kingsman.
“So are you going to tell me what is going on or is it top secret?” I asked after a few minute of silence. I hated silence, it made me anxious.
“Your phone has been unblocked.” He said eventually. “You have no restrictions for incoming and outgoing calls and texts. Your social network accounts are now active again. “
“Really?” I replied, “thank you, I...”
“Don’t thank me.” He sighed. “It’s a decision beyond my control and if you don’t mind me saying, I don’t think it is a good thing but I trust you will be discreet and careful as you can be.”
I ran my finger over my phone thoughtfully. “I’ll be careful I promise. Hey, at least I can get my candy crush requests out there!” I grinned; He didn’t seem to hear and still looked concerned. I realised he was actually really worried about me.
“You’re worried Rafe will contact me and ask me to come home?” I asked quietly.
“Yes.” He sighed at last. “There is a great possibility it could happen.”
“Well you don’t need to worry. Even the thought of him makes me feel sick; I don’t want to be anywhere near him!”
It was the truth; my time spent with Harry had opened my eyes to how different men could be. He was everything Rafe was not! We could have conversations for hours; he would show me as much interest and enthusiasm as I would him. He had never snapped at me or judged me; I could speak as I pleased without worrying about what he would think. He smiled at me, laughed at my jokes, and complimented my appearance and actions. His eyes would often watch me as I walked across the room, his gaze hiding whatever thoughts were going through his head. The times he grabbed my glass as I knocked it over, the times he tolerated my annoying way of using song lyrics to reply to questions. He would be there to hold my hand if I was crying at night because I missed my home, missed my job and missed my little dog so desperately. He never minded sitting up with me until 3am in the lounge watching Netflix and not complaining at me spilling cheese and onion crisps over the carpet. The kitchen kiss was never mentioned again by either of us, but I was happy simply being with him.
The car stopped at a shopping centre, I hadn’t a clue where we were but that didn’t matter, we were in town and it was like a breath of fresh air to me. Harry was not like Rafe, in that he did not insist on following me around each shop and commenting on what I was looking at. “Find yourself whatever you need and use this for payment. The pin is 6787.” He placed a credit card in my hand. “You don’t want to come with me?” “Oh dear no, I can’t imagine anything worse than accompanying you whilst you browse through acres of clothing. You choose the items you need and I will meet you afterwards. “ “Ok.” I smiled, never having had such an invitation. “I only ask one thing.” He added, “Find yourself something nice for this evening as I am taking you out for dinner, that is as long as you would like to accept my invitation?” “Yes, of course I accept.” I smiled.I was in a world of wonder, choosing clothes that didn’t have to be approved by Rafe was wonderful. I was very careful and chose a selection of tops and jeans, leggings and two pairs of shoes. As for ‘going out clothes’, I didn’t have a clue, what kind of place would Harry take me to? I wandered up and down several shops aimlessly searching.
“Can I help you madam?” A shrill voice rang out behind me. A spectacled blonde woman appeared from nowhere, I glanced around for a moment before realising I was the ‘madam’ that she was referring to.
“Um, I’m going out for dinner tonight and I need something nice to wear.” I squeaked, feeling completely out of place.
“Ah first date maybe madam? I think I might have something appropriate if you would like to follow me.” She said with a knowing smile. I made a cringe face, first date sounded completely wrong and I was about to say something but she lead me over to a rack of various garments. She fumbled about and came back with two dresses, a royal blue dress with a halter neck; it came down to just above knee length and a black lace number with tassels along the bottom. As someone who always went for the easy option of black I was suddenly inspired to go for some colour. I pointed at the blue dress which seemed quite appropriate. I chose a pair of blue heels to go along with it and stepped into the changing room.
“I love it!”
“You look divine, and I am sure your date will think the same!” She enthused. As I stepped out of the shop I immediately messaged Harry to say that I was ready. A few minutes later another text came through , it was from Rafe. My heart plummeted immediately and I hardly dared read it but my finger clicked it open. ‘Shellie, I am so worried, please contact me, I love you so much and I need to talk to you. All my love xxx Rafe xxx’ I clicked it closed and deleted it immediately. How dare he message me, how dare he think that I would even reply. Harry noticed my frown as he approached.
“Everything ok?” “Yeah, all ok. “ I lied. Shoving the phone in my pocket. “I’m tired though; can we go get a coffee?” “Of course.” He smiled.
It was seven thirty when I swayed awkwardly down the stairs in my new heels. My ankle wobbled sideways with each step, Harry smiled up at me as I descended, he looked as perfect as always in a suit and tie.
“You look beautiful.” He smiled, taking my hand for the last two steps, which I was thankful of before I fell ungraciously on my backside. I gave an awkward smile and pulled the back of the dress down as it felt strange, my legs being on show, he pulled my hand away and squeezed it gently.
“You look perfect; stop trying to fuss with things.”
“I’m walking drunk when I haven’t even touched a drop!” I giggled, taking a deep breath and walking hand in hand with him out to the car. I hadn’t been taken out for a meal for as long as I could remember, let along dressing up for the occasion. Harry did not let go of my hand until we were in the restaurant, maybe he sensed my anxiety, the way my eyes flicked around as we walked through the door. I could see a sea of pretty ladies, chattering gents, was this even my world?
“You look gorgeous, come on.” I followed him and sat down in a corner, after straightening my dress for the three thousandth time I looked up to see him giving me a bemused look and placing the menu in my hand. I glanced through; thank god it was in English. It showed what a recluse I had become lately. My stomach was doing back flips because of the text message from earlier mixed with being in a public place, Harry laughed as the waiter arrived and waved wine over my glass I literally held it there for the whole bottle. I softened at that point, and giggled across the table. We ordered our food I calmed my mind as the lights dimmed. After we had eaten and we were sitting enjoying conversation and the surplus alcohol from the evening, the lights went down at the end of the room and some of the couples were moving to the floor.
“Do you dance?” harry asked.
“Well, I do but it isn’t pretty...” I began.
“Well would you do me the honour?” He held out his arm.
I thought for a moment, I had a million left feet, how could I pull this one off. “I can’t dance! Not at all...it will be hideous!” I hissed. Harry gave a smile from the corner of his mouth and took my hand, he softly pulled me to the dance floor and put one arm around me, with the other he held my hand and in some way directed me of what we were doing. I panicked momentarily until Harry’s arms wrapped soothingly around me, one around my waist and the other taking my hand. He moved us out onto the dance floor, he watched my face intently, I followed his every move, the music absorbed through my soul, coming out through my pores into my arms which held him close as we moved slowly around the floor, each time I tried to glance down, he moved my chin up with one single finger, gazing into my eyes. His gaze kept my mind transfixed, his chocolate brown eyes sending a calming haze. I closed my eyes; I felt his breath against my ear, moving down the length of my neck. In a vampiric haze I lay my head back as we moved, as if under a spell. His soft lips dipped down against my skin, kissing softly down to the strap of my dress. My arms pulled him closer, around his waist. We moved like that for the duration of the song. ‘All of me’ by John Legend.
‘What’s going on in that beautiful mind, I’m on your magical mystery ride...’
Harry pulled my face up towards him with one finger again until I was looking him in the eyes. He gave a quick smile of assurance and I could see form his eyes that he felt the same way as me. He gestured his finger quickly from my eyes to his own. Look at me, and I did, and I saw how he felt, just like those times that I could see how much Rafe hated me, this time I could see how much this man loved me, loved my very being and who I was.
‘How many times do I have to tell you, even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too. The world is beating you down; I’m around through every mood.’
I took a gasp of breath and before I could speak he kissed me hard, his lips crushing against mine. And he didn’t care about who was watching, we were in our place, it didn’t matter, nothing mattered. His tongue darted in and out of my mouth, I grabbed his cheek, pulling him closer, needing that kiss to last forever. Not only in my mind.
‘You’re my downfall; you’re my muse, my worst distraction, my rhythm and blues.’
The fear came back, the same fear I had felt after he had kissed me in the kitchen that day. The fear that cut me like a knife, that he would turn around in a second and reject me. I drew back.
“If you turn around in half an hour and deny you felt this I will get the next taxi back to Lowther.” I gasped, desperate for him not to reject me again.
He shook his head and smiled sheepishly.
“The trouble is my sweet lady that I am a very old fashioned sort of man and up until our car journey earlier I was still unaware if you were in a relationship or not.”
“And are you still unaware? Because I can assure you that me and Rafe are finished. “
“I know, and I trust you that you won’t be going back to him. You deserve better Shellie and I’m going to show you that.” He replied, softly kissing my bottom lip as I was thinking.
“Oh my god you are just so perfect.” I breathed, closing my eyes. This could not be real.“Shall we go home?”
I hoped I knew what he meant.
“Yes.” I replied, hoping just as much that this dream would not end as we left the building; he held my hand as I followed giggling as we hurried out into the pouring rain.
