It was almost midnight when they saw her finally approaching from the direction of the boy’s dormitories. Where had she been? They stood when she came near and Madison slowed to a halt with trepidation. Reid and Tyler were warlocks. It frightened her a bit now as the realization hit her full force since she had left Pogue’s room. “Madi? Where have you been? We’ve been worried all day,” Tyler began. “And why were you so angry with me this morning?” Reid asked. He glanced down at the book she was holding tightly against her chest. “Did you read something that bothered you?” She looked from Reid to Tyler and back again. “I know what you are,” she said in a low voice. “And what I am.” Tyler nodded and took a look about the hall. This was not the right place to talk about it. “Can we talk in your room?” Madison shook her head, slowly. “No, not right now. I… think I’m going to need some time to digest this. It’s a bit crazy, you know? I just need to be on my own for now.” “We can help you understand more, answer your questions…” “Thank you, but, I just want to be alone.” “How much time do you need?” Reid asked, not liking the tone of her voice at the moment. “I don’t know… a few days or so, maybe.” She turned to her door, taking her key out to unlock it. “Madi,” Tyler said, making her turn her head back, “remember that it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.” She nodded and slipped inside her room, needing to be away from them, away from stuff that was hard to accept. “Fucking Pogue!” Tyler exclaimed, pulling out his cell phone and pressing Caleb’s number. Ty, what’s up? “She knows, Caleb. Pogue gave her the Book of Damnation.” I know he did. “What? And you didn’t think to tell us? She‘s all freaked now and trying to avoid us.” Did you talk to her? “We tried, but she says she needs time to herself to think about things.” Then give her time. “And what if she leaves town?” She hasn’t yet. If she does, we’ll deal with it then. Tyler, she just found out something fairly major. Give her the time she asks for. And don’t be mad at Pogue. He did the right thing. OOOOO Madison didn’t want this. She wanted her life to be normal again. She wanted to concentrate on school and friendships, and not this dark secret that now hung over her head. In the morning she held her pills in her hand, remembering how Pogue said they were suppressing her powers. Powers! She was a freaking witch. But they just didn’t understand, those Sons of Ipswich, they didn’t understand what life was like when she didn’t take her pills. Her life would be a living nightmare of madness. There would be no way she could stop taking these pills without ending up at the crazy farm. She didn’t want to be a witch if it meant hallucinations. She decided the next day that she had better distance herself from the Sons of Ipswich and try to make other friends. She was going to forget what she knew, keep taking her pills, and live her life as normal as possible. But they kept watching her, waiting for her to approach them. Madison would see them gathered in a group, talking. They would grow quiet when she passed, looking at her in question. And her feet wanted to take her to them, but her mind fought against it. She knew they wanted to help her, but she didn’t want to be what they were. She didn’t want it to be real. This craziness had to end. OOOOO Aaron Abbot usually sat in the back of his Trigonometry class, but he had noticed that Madison Marish no longer hung around Garwin and Simms the last few days and thought he’d take this opportunity to get to know her better. She was quite hot no matter what Kira might of said about her. He moved to the seat next to her before class started. “Hey, how ya doing?” he said. “I’m Aaron.” “Madison,” she replied. “Nice name.” “Thanks.” She opened her book and took out her homework paper which he noticed was only half done. “You having trouble with this class?” “A little. I’ve just been distracted lately.” “Math’s always been easy for me. I could help you if you want,” he offered. Smooth, Aaron. “Um, maybe,” she smiled. “I guess I could use some help.” “How about at lunch?” Madison was tired of eating lunch alone the past few days anyway. “Sure.” OOOOO They sat together at lunch in the cafeteria with their books open and papers out as Aaron tried to explain the homework problems. Madison was very grateful for the help, though Aaron kept dropping his food onto his lap before the fork could reach his mouth. After the fourth consecutive time, he swore, “What the fuck?! There is something up with my fork. I’m going to get another.” He got up from the table and returned with a new fork. But then when he tried to get the food to his mouth, it happened again. Madison heard laughter from across the room and looked to find the Sons of Ipswich staring at Aaron and roaring with laughter, especially Reid, Tyler, and Pogue. Caleb tried to lose the smile when he noticed Madison had caught them and then shrugged in apology. She mouthed the words, “Stop.” Aaron was busy cleaning off his pants to notice. He seemed really embarrassed, however. “I guess I’ll eat something later.” Madison just nodded. Near the end of lunch, Aaron said, “Hey, there’s a big party at Stephen Humphries house in town this weekend. You should definitely come. It’s on Friday night. I can give you ride if you want.” “Is it a big party?” “Yeah, it’s a Halloween party, actually. He has one every year. He’s got a big place so everyone is usually invited. And even if they aren’t invited, they still show up.” “Does everyone wear costumes?” “Most do, but not everyone. That’s up to you.” She looked across the room at the Sons, who sat talking and sending her covert glances. Well, she wanted to make more friends, didn’t she? So why not go to the party? “Yeah, maybe I will. Don’t know what kind of costume I could put together in one day, but I’ll try.” “Awesome,” Aaron smiled. “So about nine o’clock then?” “Yeah, that’s fine.” OOOOO Madison spent the next evening making fairy wings and a crown in her dorm room. She already had a white summer dress she intended to wear with ballet slippers. Not exactly the best costume she had ever put together, but it would have to do since time was short. The next evening she curled her long hair into ringlets that fell down her back and topped it with the shiny silver crown. She applied sparkly makeup to her face, neckline and arms, please with the overall effect. Then she decided to put a small amount of glitter over her hair. “Enchanting,” she smiled at herself in the mirror. It just might be a fun evening after all. Aaron picked her up at nine, exclaiming how beautiful she looked and Madison couldn’t help but blush. He took her directly to the party and seemed to be staying by her side possessively. He soon handed her a drink. When Madison took a sip, she coughed a bit as her eyes watered. “What is this?” “Vodka and orange juice,” he replied. “O.K., so maybe more vodka than orange juice.” “It’s really strong.” “You don’t drink much, do you?” Madison shook her head. “You’ll get use to it,” Aaron replied. “Drink up and then we’ll dance.” OOOOO “That’s it. I’m going over to her room. It’s been a whole week and she said she only needed a few days,” Tyler frowned. “I don’t like how distant she’s acting.” Reid nodded. “Let’s go then.” When they arrived at Madison’s door, they stood knocking for a bit when another girl walked by. “You looking for Madison?” “Yeah.” “She went to Humphrie’s Halloween Bash - I saw her getting ready in the bathroom earlier.” Reid and Tyler shared a glance. “Thanks.” OOOOO Everything and everyone looked fuzzy and she couldn’t focus on conversations anymore. The music was loud and the beat filled her body, urging her to move. “I want to dance!” she hollered in Aaron’s ear over the noise. He nodded and pulled her to the dance floor. Madison let herself be carried away by the music as she moved, bodies swaying in a blur around her. She could feel Aaron’s hands on her as he swayed with her. She knew he was touching too much of her, kissing her neck, nibbling her ear, but it felt wonderful and she was so tipsy that she really didn’t care at the moment. She couldn’t close her eyes like she wanted to, because whenever she did the floor felt like it was moving up and down, side to side beneath her and she would begin to lose her balance. The lights were dim, but there were spotlights here and there, making the sparkles on her skin and hair stand out. She turned her head one way and saw Pogue standing on the far side of the room, staring at her. She gasped a bit, not expecting them to be here. Aaron felt her reaction and assumed it was because he was trying to seduce her. He moved his mouth to her ear and said, “Do you want to go upstairs with me?” She glanced at him in confusion and then looked back to where Pogue was standing, but he was gone! “Madison, do you want to?” Aaron asked again. “I think you’d really like it.” He began to pull her through the dancing crowd toward the staircase. But Madison was still looking about wildly, trying to find out if Pogue was really here or not. The crowd pressed in on them and Madison felt dizzy and claustrophobic. She let go of Aaron’s hand and found herself immediately in a different pair of arms from behind. She could no longer spot Aaron through the masses. The person holding her from behind put his chin on her shoulder in order to talk into her ear. “Madi, what are you doing?” Madison turned about in his arms, noticing Reid Garwin grinning at her. “Reid?” she said, a bit slurred. Reid narrowed his eyes. “You’ve been drinking.” Then he laughed. “Aren’t you full of surprises.” “I am not,” she frowned, but put her arms around his neck for support while they danced. “You look beautiful,” he said, his eyes raking over her. “Why waste it on Abbot? He’s the biggest prick at school.” “I don’t know about his prick,” she replied, enjoying the warmth of Reid’s body pressed on hers. “But I think he was just about to show me.” Reid dropped his smile. “That won’t be happening. You belong with us.” She tried to look him in the eye, but she was having a hard time focusing. “I don’t belong to anyone.” “Yes, you do. You don’t have to worry. We’ll take care of you.” “I thought I saw Pogue here.” “He’s here. We’re all here.” “You don’t have a costume on.” “We didn’t come for the party. We came for you.” “Why? Aren’t I allowed to go to a party? Are you my dad or something?” she slurred. “You can’t go to parties with assholes like Aaron Abbot. He was just about to try and get you alone.” Madi’s eyes opened wide. “I wouldn’t have let him!” Reid nodded. “I know, but you’re a little too drunk to put up much of a fight.” “I only had one drink.” “Really? Just one? You must be a lightweight.” Madison sighed, laying her head on his shoulder. She was quite exhausted, now that she thought of it. “You’ll take me home?” “Actually, there is somewhere else we want to take you first.” Reid whisked her away and out the front door, the cool night air waking her up more. He kept an arm about her so she wouldn’t lose her already precarious footing. They approached Tyler’s black truck, Pogue leaning on the vehicle with his arms crossed, watching her. “Hey, Madison, you all right?” Madison nodded, adding, “I don’t think I was suppose to mix alcohol with my medications. My bad,” she laughed. But the boys didn’t think that was funny. Tyler leaned toward the open window from the driver’s seat. “Hop in, Madi, it’s cold tonight.” She got into the front with Tyler and Reid closed her door. Then he and Pogue went into the back seat. “No Caleb?” she asked. Tyler glanced toward the house. “He’s taking care of something.” “What does that mean? Aaron? Is he hurting Aaron? Oh, my God,” she fretted, opening the door to get out. Tyler reached over and grabbed her wrist. “Madison, stay in the truck.” His eyes flashed and the door shut itself. Madison pressed herself against the door, looking at Tyler in fear. “Please let me out.” “Nice going, Tyler,” Pogue said sarcastically from the back seat. “No one’s going to hurt you, Madi,” Tyler promised. “We want to help you.” “By scaring me?” “I’m sorry about that. Just… please come with us, o.k.? There is someplace we want to show you. Someplace we can talk without being overheard.” “Don’t worry about Aaron,” Pogue said from the back seat. “Caleb’s not a bad guy. In fact, he’s probably the most moral of us all. He’s just going to have a talk with Aaron, tell him to keep away from you.” “Why can’t I see who I want to?” “You can,” Pogue replied, earning a hard glare from Tyler in the front seat. “But not Aaron Abbot. Trust us on this one. Even Sarah and Kate call him a pig and a pervert.” Madison sighed, feeling tired again. “So, where is this place you want to take me?” she asked, crankily. “You’ll see.” OOOOO Madison looked about the crypt, amazed at how many relics and books there were. Is this where they did their rituals? She walked slowly around the room, touching things as she passed. The boys watched her patiently. Finally she turned and looked at them. “What do you do in this room?” “It’s just a private place for the coven to meet. You’re welcome here too, of course,” Pogue said. “We can speak freely here about… stuff.” She wandered over to the five chairs sitting on the points of a pentagram on the floor. She was feeling a bit more sober now. “Five chairs? Were you expecting me?” Tyler shook his head. “No, but you can have it now. It was for the fifth son of Ipswich, but was mostly symbolic until recently.” “Symbolic?” “That line had supposedly died out long ago. There use to be five male lines of the blood in the old days. But we recently found out that it didn’t die out.” “There’s a fifth son?” “Chase Collins,” Reid replied, practically spitting that name. “He didn’t want to come to Ipswich?” “Oh, he came here - right before Caleb’s ascension. He wanted Caleb to will his powers to him so he could be even more powerful himself. You see, Chase had already ascended. He ended up putting Kate and Pogue in the hospital, and kidnapping Sarah and almost burning her to death in the old Putnam barn. All of that in order to force Caleb to give up his powers to him.” “Oh my God,” Madison breathed, sitting down in a chair. This Chase warlock sounded completely evil. “So what happened?” “Caleb ascended and fought him. Caleb’s father gave up his own life in order to will Caleb his powers so that he could get rid of Chase. Caleb beat him and saved Sarah, but no body was ever found. Chase is still out there.” “O.K., that’s creepy. What if he tries to return?” “He knows Caleb is stronger than him right now,” Tyler answered. “But we think he might try to come around again before the three of us ascend. He may try to get our powers so he could be strong enough to fight Caleb. So we’ll be keeping an eye out for him around Pogue’s birthday.” Madison nodded. “Does he know about this crypt?” “No, we are safe here,” Reid winked. The three Son’s sat down in their seats, cautiously. No one knew quite where to start. “Is Caleb going to join us here tonight?” “No,” Pogue replied. “Why not?” The three boys seemed nervous to answer her as they looked to one another. Finally, Pogue said, “Because he is ascended, he has a lot of power and that power is very… sensitive… to your power.” “My power?” Madison half scoffed. “What power is that?” “Caleb can actually see your power - visibly. And he can feel it strongly.” “And he hates it, or what?” “It does certain things to him.” “Like what?” Pogue sighed. They would have to tell her, wouldn’t they? “Like an overwhelming need to… be with you… intimately.” Madison stared at him, dumbstruck. Caleb wanted her? Like that? “But he has Sarah,” she found herself saying out loud. “That doesn’t matter. Sarah’s not a witch, she doesn’t have your powers. That’s why he doesn’t stick around when you are near. He doesn’t want to lose control around you.” “Seriously? It’s because I’m a… a… witch?” It felt strange calling herself that. “Yeah,” Pogue replied. “His cousin found an old manuscript. Witches naturally lure warlocks to them. The more powerful the warlock, the more he desires her.” Madison looked at the ground, feeling bad. “I’m sorry. Maybe I should leave Spencer then. Caleb was here first and I don’t want to make him uncomfortable or cause problems between him and Sarah.” “No!” Tyler almost shouted. Pogue made a quiet signal with his hand and shook his head at Tyler. He wanted to be the one to explain it to her. “You see, Madi, the truth is that we need you. The documents also say that relations with a witch will stop us from aging prematurely every time we use our powers.” “Us?” she looked about at their faces before the horror dawned on her. “You mean me, sleeping with all of you?” “You’re the only witch around, Madi. Before you came, our fathers and grandfathers wasted away. We won’t force you, of course, it‘s completely up to you.” “I’m not a whore!” she stated, angrily. “We would never think of you that way,” Pogue replied. “Hell, we are already half in love with you as it is.” Her anger dissipated a bit at his confession. But she shook her head. “That’s just outrageous. I just want a normal life, you know, graduate, find a job, get married, have children. I don’t even want to be a witch. Do you have any idea what my life would be like without my pills? I couldn’t stop taking them in order to use my powers. I would be certifiably insane. So, you see, this is just not for me.” “You wouldn’t need your pills anymore if you started… you know… with us - or even one of us,” Tyler stated. “What do you mean?” “Those manuscripts Caleb read, they explained how a witch and warlock needed to be together, him in order not to age fast, and her in order not to go insane. That‘s what will eventually happen to you, Madi, if you never take a warlock as a lover. We need each other.” Madison stared at Tyler as he finished speaking. Was this some sort of scheme? She needed to screw a warlock? Is that right? Pogue could see what she was thinking as the doubtful expression fell on her face. “Go and read the manuscripts for yourself. This is not a plot to get in your pants. This is real, Madi. His name is Mark Anderson at Ipswich Realty. He’s Caleb’s cousin. Go and see him. Ask him to show you the document. You’ll see we aren’t lying. We need each other.” She nodded, sighing heavily. Yes, she wanted to see this document. She needed to know all she could. Could she really live a life without those pills? Would the visions and dreams be controllable? My God, was she actually going to consider this crazy idea? “I think I’m ready to leave now,” she said, feeling overwhelmed and tired. I’m… not going to decide anything tonight. This is a lot to consider.” “We know,” Pogue nodded. “Take your time. We’re still young. Just, don’t cut us out of your life, Madi. Even if you decide not to be with any of us, even if you decide you don’t want to practice your powers, you are still one of us. This is where you belong. We want to be your friends if you can accept who we are.” OOOOO A/N So, hmmm… wonder what’s next? Can Madison decide what life she wants to live or will the boys have to do some convincing (and seducing)? We’ll find out next time. I know Aaron sounded nicer than the movie portrayed him, but he was on his best behavior to try to get with Madison. He won’t stay nice in the future. I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
