Chapter Six: A voice from the past; and the problems
that follow…
After the ‘Ikran
Painting’ incident, things were quiet for Trudy. She did however, become the
official painter of the Omaticaya Ikrans. Trudy being the person that she was,
this peace and quiet didn’t have a chance of lasting very long.
When she wasn’t
busy ferrying the teachers to the new schoolhouse, Trudy suddenly found her
self very busy painting pictures on different Ikran’s or learning how to make
the color paste the Na’vi used to paint themselves and their mounts with. Much
to her amusement and to Tsu’tey’s Ikran’s jealously, most of Trudy’s time
seemed to be taken up with painting different pictures on various Ikrans. The
large, possessive Ikran now had to share his former meat provider with his
fellow Ikrans. To add to his displeasure, the Ikran was not even getting fed by
Trudy anymore. This was because Tsu’tey had forbidden her to feed his mount.
‘What Tsu’tey
didn’t know, wouldn’t hurt him.’ thought Trudy to herself. ‘Besides, he
couldn’t honestly expect me to listen to every thing he said now did he?!’
Humming softly to herself, Trudy gave Tsu’tey’s Ikran a piece of the yerik meat
that she had hunted down this morning for the people remaining at Hells Gate.
Ever since the RDA had left, the
people who had chosen to stay back at Hells Gate, had to manage on the limited
resources left behind on Pandora. Trudy, being one of the few who could hunt on
Pandora, always helped out by adding to the food stocks any way she could.
After the whole
‘paint can’ episode, Trudy didn’t immediately return back to Hells Gate. She
stuck around the temporary Kelutral for a couple of days. Mainly because she
had been so busy painting other Ikrans.
***
While finally
flying back ‘home’ to Hells Gate, Trudy couldn’t help anticipating a hot shower
and a clean bed. While she loved spending time with the Omaticaya, there were
some human amenities that you just couldn’t find out in the jungles of Pandora.
While trying to land in her usual spot, the first thing that she noticed was that
Max was pacing next to the landing area of her Samson. It was obvious that he
had been waiting for her. Smiling to her herself, Trudy couldn’t help thinking
that patience was certainly not one of Max’s attributes. Despite the amusing
thought, seeing Max like this made Trudy slightly nervous.
“What happened?”
Trudy asked Max as soon as she could jump out of her Samson.
In response to Trudy’s
urgent question, Max first shook his head, and tried to smile and say hi
instead. On getting glared at in response, and seeing that Trudy hadn’t fallen
for his attempt at normalcy, Max give up and grabbed Trudy’s arm and
practically dragged her after him down a side path that lead around the medical
wing of the base.
Breathing hard
due to the fact that they were practically running, Max asked Trudy “Remember
some time ago we had decided to cut power and air to any non functional areas
of the base in order to conserve resources?”
Trudy who was
focused on keeping up with Max, and not getting alarmed at his uncharacteristic
behavior, simply nodded in response to Max’s question.
At Trudy’s nod,
Max continued his explanation. “Well, we did exactly what we planned, and shut
down all unutilized areas of the base. When we were done with the shutdown, we
did a scan to make sure that we had got everything. When the scan results came
back, I was shocked to see that there was a sector of unutilized base that was
still receiving power. The most interesting part of all this is that I couldn’t
figure out where that area was getting its power from. I mean, I had just shut
down all the generators in that area.” Shaking his head in amazement at the
turn of events, Max suddenly made a sharp turn and stopped in front of a small,
partially hidden door.
Since Max was
still holding on to her arm and practically dragging her along with him, Trudy
didn’t have much of a choice but to follow Max through the small door and its
accompanying air lock; and then down a long staircase that was barely
illuminated with spotty lighting.
Climbing down
the stairs as fast as possible, Max continued his story. “When we realised that
this area was powered by an unknown generator, we immediately went to check it
out and found something amazing!!”
Trudy, who was
starting to have a very bad feeling about this whole thing; was now led by Max
to the end of the steep staircase, and then to a new door and down a long glass
enclosed passage. When Trudy saw that passage, she suddenly realised that it
was exactly like the passage that preceded the door to the Avatar link section.
This sudden realization made the bad feeling that Trudy was experiencing,
harden into certainty that she would not like anything that she found thru that
door. What the hell had the RDA
hidden down here?!
Realizing that
he was practically dragging a very wary pilot behind him, Max turned to Trudy
and said “I know what you’re thinking. But it wasn’t the RDA, nor was it the military who build this sector,
Trudy. After a lot of digging, I’ve realised that there isn’t even any
documentation on this place. The RDA
didn’t even know about its existence.”
Finally stopping
his headlong rush, Max turned around and faced Trudy and started explaining
things. “Thanks to my non stop digging,
I found out who build this sector. It was a scientist named Dr. Bernstein. He’s
a legend around here, and was one of the people who established Hells Gate in
the first place. He was also one of the founders of the whole Avatar program,
and was instrumental in the creation of the first few Avatars.
After listening
to Max’s information, Trudy only got more anxious and curious about what she
was going to find behind the final door. Taking a deep breath, she followed Max
thru a door when led to a fully functional bio lab that seemed to be split into
three big rooms. She suddenly noticed that a forth room contained an actual
running link room with six link beds. The area that really caught Trudy’s
attention though, was the sections of the lab which contained ten huge amino
tanks. Floating around in the tanks were the usual large Avatar bodies.
Meanwhile,
oblivious to Trudy’s shock, Max continued with his explanation. “When Dr.
Bernstein went back to earth, he passed on his secret lab over to Grace, who
seemed to have been his protégée. She in turn, kept it a secret and didn’t tell
anyone about it. Selfridge and Quaritch seemed to be completely in the dark
about this, and I can’t blame Grace for that. What I can’t get over is how she
didn’t even let me in on this huge secret of hers!” Shaking his head in
frustration and confusion, Max walked on leaving Trudy alone in front of the
full, glowing amino tanks.
From what Trudy
could tell, one of the Avatar’s was obviously dead, and the fluid that it was
in had already changed its colour. As she walked past another amnio tank, Trudy couldn’t help gulping because it was
obvious that this was an experiment that had gone badly wrong. The Avatar in
question was terribly deformed and wouldn’t have survived in the Pandora wilds
no matter what.
As Trudy
wandered around looking for Max, she saw another two obviously dead Avatars
that were in the process of being de-canted from their growth tanks. The fluid
that was being removed stank, and Trudy was truly grateful that this was
something that she didn’t have to do. Finding Max again, she prodded him and
asked him to continue his explanation.
Flashing a quick
grin at Trudy, Max continued “You have to hand it to Grace. She followed Dr.
Bernstein’s directions and from what I can tell, used this place to re grow Avatars
and that got damaged without the RDA
finding out. She even seemed to have grown Avatars from DNA
that she sourced on Pandora.”
Walking around
the bio lab with Max, Trudy noticed that they had just walked past an empty amino
tank. As it looked clean, it had either brand new, or simply hadn’t been used
for a while.
“Naturally Grace
didn’t manage everything on her own here. She just wouldn’t have had the time.
From what records I can find, Grace seems to have been helped by Dr. Bishop,
Dr. Angela Bishop. Do you remember her Trudy? She was the women who got killed
a year ago when some viper wolves managed to find a hole in the encampment.”
Nodding in response to Max’s question, Trudy continued to slowly walk around
the new lab.
When she reached
the remaining anino pods, Trudy suddenly noticed that five of the Avatar’s that
were in the pods, seemed to be alive and fully grown out. Before she could
stare at the floating Avatar’s, Trudy realised that something was off. Four
people from the base were standing around the pods talking softly amongst
themselves. Since there weren’t that many people left behind in the Hells Base
compound, Trudy knew every one standing in the group, and couldn’t help
wondering why these people were here. They weren’t scientists, nor did they -
to the best of her knowledge; have anything to do with the Avatar program.
Suddenly the bad
feeling that Trudy had been experiencing, returned in full force. Something was
definitely not right here. Trudy just knew that. “Trudy? Hey Trudy!” Max waved
his hand to catch Trudy’s attention again. “From what I can tell, Grace somehow
managed to do all this work on her own after Dr. Bernstein died. Now I know why
she wanted to talk to me so badly a few days before everything went down the
drain; she must have wanted to tell me about the hidden lab. Unfortunately I
just had no time that day!!”
It was at this
point of time, that Trudy suddenly noticed Norm, who was in his human body for
a change. Before she could attract Norm’s attention, and ask him what he was
reading so intently, Norm suddenly looked up and noticed Trudy. Grinning
happily the scientist exclaimed “Damn, Trudy! The Avatar that Grace grew for
you is gorgeous!”
That was the
last thing Trudy heard before she fainted.
“Trudy?! She is
coming to, Max.” Norm exhaled in relief. It was unnerving for him to see one of
his friends who was really strong pass out like this. “Can someone please get
me a glass of water? Ah, thank you Christine.”
“Here Trudy,
drink that, it will help.” Norm helped Trudy sit up and hold the glass steady.
“If I had known that Max hadn’t told you already, I wouldn’t have said
anything. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you felt so strongly about the Avatars.”
Still pretty
dazed, Trudy simply shook her head at Norm. “It’s not that, Norm, I was simply
shocked that Grace grew me an Avatar despite knowing very well that I didn’t
want one! She had asked me once if I would like my own Avatar, and I flat out
refused. I never wanted to be someone else, Norm. I don’t need a new body to do
my job, so why get one?”
Norm nodded
slowly; trying to understand where Trudy was coming from. All his life, all he
had ever wanted to be was an Avatar driver, so for him, Trudy’s shock and
reluctance were things that he just did not understand. But still, what ever
the case, Trudy was his friend and he had just given her a very unpleasant
shock.
“Sorry again,
Trudy. I’m feeling really bad that I’ve upset you.” said Norm guiltily. “Although
despite everything, aren’t you even curious about what your Avatar looks like
Trudy?” In response, Trudy just smiled at him and told him that she’d meet her
Avatar a little while later. At that, Trudy got up and walked out of the bio
lab as quickly as she could.
***
A little while
later, after a walk, a workout, a shower and some food; the shock started
wearing off for Trudy; and she decided that it was now time to meet her Avatar.
When she reached the ‘secret bio lab’ though, her plans were set back a bit
when she discovered that all five surviving amino pods had been shifted to the
main lab.
A short detour
later, Trudy found herself talking to Dr. Max Patel yet again. The sheepish
scientist started trying to slowly explain to Trudy what might have happened.
“Since Grace isn’t around; I can only guess what exactly happened and what she
might have had in mind. From what I can tell, and I may be completely wrong, it
looks she took the scans and samples that she needed to build your Avatar’s DNA structure from your personal file. These
samples are routinely submitted by everyone to the RDA
before they land on Pandora. They are also accessible for research purposes to
the scientists who have high level security clearance…”
Trudy could tell
that Max was feeling uncomfortable talking about anything wrong that his hero
Grace may have done, and that he was also taking things slow because he obviously
didn’t want to overwhelm her again. As much as she appreciated the sentiments
behind Max’s slow awkward speech, Trudy just wanted to get to the bottom of
things and decided to speed Max’s speech up.
“Max, while that
all may be fine, I want to know what happened here and why did Grace do
something that I specifically did not want her to do?”
At Trudy’s blunt
question, Max flushed a bit, but responded “I’ve just found Grace’s logs, and
have been reading them. According to the one that I’m reading right now, Grace
was worried about things not working out in the future, and planned
accordingly. She made these Avatars in preparation for the battle that I think
she saw coming between the RDA and
the Na’vi. I don’t know what she was
expecting, and what she was planning for exactly. What ever the case, it’s
obvious that she deliberately chose to only make Avatar’s of people that she
trusted. There is not a single Avatar here of a RDA
sympathizer. I’m not sure of this theory though, and I needed a while to figure
out why Grace acted this way.”
Max walked to
one of the amino pods and looked in and shook his head. “According to what I am
reading in her journal, one of her reasons for these Avatars was that no one
would have expected any of you’ll to have an Avatar. Another fact that Grace
obviously feels very strongly about, is that she wanted you guys have your own
Avatars, just in case you would ever need them. She also seems to distrust the RDA even back then, and definitely did not want the
RDA to find out anything about her
secret Avatar program. What I find incredible, is that somehow she and Dr. Bernstein
found a way to grow Avatars here on Pandora. Not only that, they even managed
to build a secret lab under the very nose of the RDA;
and shortcut and simplify the process of growing an Avatar here on Pandora.”
Trudy was in
shock yet again for the second time the same day. When her eyes started
stinging due to unshed tears, she simply blinked them away. Right at this
moment, she felt a bit like a little child who had just lost her parents.
Having your sense of stability and reality yanked away wasn’t a nice feeling at
all. Reminding herself sternly that she wasn’t an orphaned child once again,
Trudy made a determinant decision to center herself.
While Grace
might not have been Trudy’s mentor or hero, she liked and respected her all the
same. That fact only made Trudy’s betrayal and anger sting even more. It stung
to hear Max tell her what all Grace had done behind her back.
Visibly
collecting herself yet again, Trudy pointed towards the five remaining
Avatar’s: “They are really 100% ok?” Max nodded. “Yes, actually they don’t have
a lot of errors that the others from Earth still have.” Hearing Max’s response,
Trudy frowned and turned towards the scientist “What do you mean by that?”
Oblivious to the
inner battles that Trudy was waging with regard to his former boss, Max gave
Trudy a huge grin, and climbed down the high platform that he had been standing
on in order to check on the Avatars.
Reaching Trudy,
Max tried to explain things to her. “Here’s an easy example of what I am
talking about. I’m sure you’re aware of the fact that the Na’vi have only four
fingers.” Max waited for Trudy to acknowledge him, and continued “Now the
Avatars that we grow always have five fingers since human genomes are used to
build the Avatar cell structure. You got me till now?”
At Trudy’s nod,
Max continued explaining things while he walked over to a computer terminal and
started searching for something. “I will spare you the complicated details of
how much else can go wrong while fusing human and Na’vi DNA;
let’s just say…ah here it is!”
Max pulled up
three full 3D brain and body scans and pointed out that there was one each of a
Na’vi, a human and an Avatar. Highlighting the parts of the scan that he wanted
to talk about with red, Max rotated the Avatar scan towards Trudy. “For the
initial Avatars that were created, the biggest problem that they had was with
the tail. In most cases it did not grow out enough to balance the body
correctly. As a result of this, the pioneering Avatar drivers had a problem
keeping their balance while driving their Avatars. This was a very common
problem when this program first started. It’s mostly eliminated now, but it still
happens though, from time to time.”
By now, Norm had
walked over and stood next to Trudy, curious to know what Max was explaining.
Max wiped the screen clear of the last 3D scans that it had displayed, and now
pulled up another 3D scan which focused on hands.
“As you can see,
the Na’vi never had fifth finger, not even evolutionary wise. They always had
only four the same goes for toes. We even checked for a second arm but only
found a rudimentary bone structure that was a leftover from an evolutionary
branch in the past. The consensus is that the Na’vi must have developed out of
an ape like race that no longer exists. Oh and one last point. Trudy, have you
ever seen any animal here that has fur?”
Trudy shook her
head in response, “No. I was under the impression that no animal here has
developed fur, why do you ask?” When the only answer that Max gave was a grin,
Trudy groaned and prepared herself for one of his speeches.
“Well, there just
isn’t any fur at all on any of Pandora’s animals. Only the Na’vi still have
hair, what puzzled us all for a long time. From what we found out through
digging up old bones, and checking the DNA
of various creatures, is that there were fur covered animals that lived on
Pandora the past. We don’t exactly know what happened, but the weather patterns
changed and the planet itself got a lot warmer. As a result, evolution decreed
that fur was no longer necessary on Pandora and it disappeared from the bodies
of all living Pandora creatures. The
Na’vi are actually the only ones left who still have hair on the body but only
on the head and the end of their tails. With regard to their hair on there
heads, we figured that they kept it to protect their queues. the tail tuft must
be a leftover.”
The next 3D
scans that Max pulled up were of the brains of all three species. Pointing to
the Avatar scan, Max asked “Did you two ever notice how the queues of the
Avatar’s are shorter than that of the Na’vi? No? Well, they often are. Grace
brought this up as a topic first. Strangely, this observation wasn’t even hers;
it was that of a Na’vi child who once told her that he pitied her co-worker at
the school. When Grace asked the Na’vi child why he felt that way; the child
responded that her co-worker was to be pitied because her queue was so ugly.
Initially Grace didn’t understand what the child was referring to, and asked
the Na’vi kid if he thought that the Avatar was ugly, or was it because they
looked different. The Na’vi kid was quick to correct Grace, and point out that
because Grace’s co – worker’s queue was shorter than average, it was considered
to be ugly from the Na’vi point of view!” Finishing his explanation, Max
grinned at Norm and Trudy who looked back oddly amused at him.
“So what about
my queue then, Max? Is it below or above average?” Norm jokingly asked Max. In
return, Max took him seriously and shook his head replying “No, actually yours
and Jake’s too are just above the length of the most others, what is rare.
Christine’s Avatar has one like that too, but the rest here on the base have
queues that are average length at best.”
“What I find
truly amazing is that the queue originated as an extension of a Na’vi’s nervous
system. How it became a symbol of beauty is something that I don’t understand.
But, the fact of the matter is that for a Na’vi on a purely practical level,
the longer his queue is, the better it is it for a connection referred to as Tsaheylu.
Think of using a weapon like the bow without having enough of space to draw the
string because your queue’s connection to the animal that you are riding is too
short.
An archer needs
to have his hands free and actually need a space to work in, drawing back the
string and such as I just told you. Someone who has a shorter queue will just not
get enough of leverage to use it from a Pa’li or an Ikran. Invariably the best
hunters are usually the ones with the longest queue. Do you understand me? It
is a survival instinct that’s at play here”
Comprehension
dawning, Trudy and Norm nodded in response to Max’s question.
“Under the Na’vi
culture, the length of ones queue ended up being an instinctual beauty ideal.
The longer the braid is, the more beautiful one is considered in the Na'vi
culture. Strange, isn’t it? Different species, different ideals. ”
Laughing along
with Trudy in response to Max’s lecture, Norm couldn’t help but point out “I
noticed that both Neytiri and Tsu’tey have longer than normal queues. This fact
has made me rethink the reasons why they get the response that they do from
their own Omaticaya clan. It also lets me see the two of them in an entirely
different light”
Max nodded at
that, and pulled yet another set of 3D scans up. “Another feature that I want
to highlight and talk about are differences in the outer physical attributes of
the Na’vi, the Avatars and the humans. Take the nose for example, an Avatar’s
nose is more defined, and it almost looks like that of a human. The nose of a
Na’vi is more cat-like and flat. Some of the pioneer Avatar drivers reported having
trouble breathing through the Avatar nose in the past. When the complain was
investigated, it was found that the Avatar’s hybrid nose didn’t allow the
Avatar to breath as well as a Na’vi nose does. The Avatar form seems unfit for
this world somehow; but then we are still ironing out the glitches here.”
“The last thing
that I want to point out here is that when you compare a Na’vi’s body, and an
Avatar’s body; the Avatar’s body is usually smaller and stockier. Also, female
Avatar’s have slightly larger busts than most Na’vi women. Again, you can blame
all the above on our human DNA.”
Soon after that
conversation ended, Trudy had left the group saying that she needed some time
alone. As she sat on her bed, hugging her pillow in her tiny allotted room,
Trudy’s mind spun trying to digest all the information that was being thrown at
her. Yes, Max and Norm were trying their best to introduce her to things
slowly, but the enormity of the situation was still hitting her.
Trudy smiled as
she thought of how excited Norm was about her Avatar. Being the typical science
geek that he was, Norm was thrilled with her new Avatar. “I’m sure that at this
very minute, Norm is telling Jake and Neytiri exactly what happened today. And
if Jake and Neytiri find out, it won’t be too long before Mo’at and the rest of
the Omaticaya clan find out as well.” Sighing to herself, Trudy realised that
while she didn’t want the rest of the world to find out about her Avatar, there
wasn’t really much of a choice here.
Trudy honestly
didn’t find the whole Avatar program very appealing at all. A lot of her
reluctance stemmed from what she had witnesses on her first day on Pandora.
After getting off the shuttle, Trudy was being escorted to her room, when she
happened to look thru the reinforced glass window of the corridor that she was
walking down. That window had overlooked the training area of the drivers.
Just her luck,
as she passed by the training area, one of the brand new drivers had a fatal
malfunction in his Avatar. While Trudy and the person escorting her watching in
horror, the Avatar died in agonizing pain in front of the glass window. The
unfortunate Avatar driver hadn’t fared much better, and as Trudy found out
later. The poor man didn’t survive his first uplink. The reason why the
unfortunate Avatar driver had died was due to some internal organ problems that
the doctors at the base had overlooked in their haste to complete the first
uplink. After witnessing that horrific death, Trudy was put off Avatars for
good.
Realizing the
fact that she was thinking about events in the past that she couldn’t control,
Trudy sighed again. Terrible experiences or not, there was something about her
Avatar and the whole scenario that gave her a very bad feeling. Turning out the
lights, the woman settled down into a fitfully sleep.
Outside Trudy’s
window, an
Atokirina whisked
alongside her window frame before it flew away in a soft breeze.
