(Sa’tesh’s Ship)
Shra’van paced back and forth in his
quarters half the night. He couldn’t sleep. He stood for long minutes starring
into the inky blackness outside the portal in his room. All he could do was think of his mother and
Ba’naj. He shook his head with disbelief every time he thought about it. It
just didn’t seem right to him. Every time he saw them together, they never even
greeted each other. A few times, he remembered Ba’naj teasing his mother about
her scent.
Then there was Sou-sha. Shra’van got
dressed and walked down the quiet halls to her quarters. He stood near the
doorway, out of sight, and waited for one of her guards to leave.
Shra’van slowly walked up to Raa’kin.
They looked at each other for a moment, acknowledgement in their eyes, before
Raa’kin stood aside and opened Sou-sha’s door.
Once again, as he thought of her plot,
Shra’van felt his anger rising. He stood looking down at her with sheer
disdain, as she slept, under the dim light. He wondered how long she had been
planning his death, and he was sure that her father knew and even approved of
the scheme. He typed a few words on her tablet before setting it aside. Sou-sha
woke up slowly as she sensed his presence and trilled softly at him. “So you
have changed your mind, son of Sh’lok and Ooman.” Sou'sha rose from her bed and
approached him.
“My mother's name was Kayla,” Shra’van
growled.
“I do not refer to Ooman's by their given
name,” she chuckled. “You are half Yautja so you are an exception.”
“Did my brother kill your brother
Sou-sha?” Shra’van questioned as he drew near her.
“Of course,” she growled looking away to
hide her hatred. “He will be severely punished.”
“That will be for the higher counsel to
decide, when he returns to the planet.”
“You really think he will make it back to
the planet, Shra’van?” she chuckled. “Every clan in the known universe is out
to get him. If you think you can protect that little brother of yours, you are
crazier than him.”
Shra’van tilted his head to the side,
when he noticed the rage in her eyes. For a moment, she allowed herself to look
at Shra’van as if she wanted to kill him. Her eyes suddenly softened.
“Maybe I am crazier than Ta’noj. After
all, we are half Ooman.”
“Yes I know,” she sighed. “I will not
hold it against you.”
Long minutes later, when Shra’van walked
out of her room, the other guard had returned to his place beside Raa’kin. “Do
you see me?” Shra’van snarled in a low tone.
“Yes,” the guard nodded, confused.
Shra’van took out a clean dagger and held
it against his throat. “I will ask again.
Do you see me?”
“Leader Shra’van,” Raa’kin pulled the
guard back. “He is my cousin and neither one of us had seen you since dinner.
Do you agree Ray’oh?”
“Yes, I do,” he bowed towards Shra’van.
Shra’van returned to his quarters and
fell into a troubled sleep. He woke to a thunderous pounding on his door. He
sighed, knowing exactly what the commotion was all about. Shra’van got up
slowly and leisurely put his cloth on before opening the door.
Before he could react, Sou-sha’s father
stalked in accompanied by Sa’tesh and Nam’rah. Several guards followed them in
along with Raa’kin and Ray’oh. “We discovered Sou-sha’s body this morning,”
Sa’tesh sighed. “She left a note.” He handed Sha’van the tablet. “She was
distraught over your denial to be with her.”
“This is horrible,” Shra’van sighed as he
looked over the tablet. He looked up at her father. “If I knew she cared this
deeply, then I would have gotten to know her better. My sincerest apologies,
Elder.” He stared at Shra’van carefully. Shra’van stared back at him, not
moving an inch. He was smart enough to place a blade or two on his body before
answering the door, and he had no problem killing an elder in self defense.
“I have always wondered what Elder
Chi’rayu saw in a half ooman half Yautja,” he spoke slowly. Shra’van crossed
his arms as he continued to stare at him. Nam’rah gave him a warning growl,
which he completely ignored. “I can understand his reasoning now.” He nodded
towards Shra’van and turned around. Raa’kin looked at Shra’van before walking
behind Nam’rah.
“Elder,” Shra’van walked up to him, when
he turned to see what the young male wanted. “If you will grant me a special
request. I wish to keep her guards as my own.”
“Why?”
“When Sou-sha came to see me I was
feeling under the weather, and I snapped at her. They were both on their guard
and were quick to protect her. I wish for the same protection for my daughter.
She is of age now and males try to pursue her.”
The Elder looked at the guards and
huffed, “Very well. I expect to have one of your cruisers on my docks within a
week, fair trade.” Shra’van shook his shoulder in agreement.
“You two, take this to my pilot,”
Shra’van started to type something on a tablet. He looked up at them, when
everyone else left. “Go to my ship and you will be assigned living quarters.”
“What about guarding your daughter?”
Ray’oh questioned.
“Relax for a while,” Shra’van grunted as
he shook his shoulder. “I am sure you both deserve it, but it will be at least
another twenty years before my daughter needs a guard.”
They both bowed to Shra’van in gratitude
before leaving the room.
When Nam’rah walked back in unannounced
Shra'van snarled as he turned in her direction. His look quickly softened.
“Forgive me Nam'rah.” He bowed respectfully.
“Your mother would have been very proud
of you,” she touched his face gently. “Such anger and compassion makes a
perfect elder.”
“I am too young to possess such a great
title,” he scoffed.
“You are just right,” she smiled. “We
will discuss this further on the planet.”
Shra’van was able to catch up with
Sa’tesh after the Elder left the ship. Sa'tesh paused as he heard him
approach. “Did you have that female
killed?” Sa’tesh growled at him as soon as the doors closed. “Do not try to
deceive me.”
“She wanted me to be her mate so she
could kill me for the death of her brother,” Shra’van sat down slowly as he
watched Sa’tesh pace back and forth. “She says Ta’noj killed him.”
“And her guards helped you?” he
questioned. “They did not have her loyalty did they?”
“I came here to ask you about your fight
with my mother,” Shra’van tapped his fingers on the table, until Sa’tesh turned
to look at him. He suddenly stopped.
“It was a long fight, and a good one,” he
nodded. “I almost killed her.”
(Flashback)
Sa’tesh walked into the room, and Kayla
was waiting for him. When she turned to look at him, he could see a few cuts on
her face that hadn’t healed from her fight yesterday. She had fought one of the
Elder's best guards, and it ended quickly with a loud howl. Kayla apologized to
everyone for accidentally killing him, but Sa’tesh was very impressed. He even
saw Ba’naj grunt in approval.
Sa’tesh looked at her newly decorated
scar. One of the elders had placed it on
her face yesterday.
“Are you ready Kayla?” She nodded to him
as she picked up her sticks. “When we fight you will be my enemy. When we are
done, if you survive, you will be my friend.” Kayla nodded again as she twirled
her sticks and watched his every move. Sa’tesh knew it would be a hard battle.
She was quick and limber and they both fought with similar styles. Sa’tesh
roared at her to begin, but Kayla wouldn’t move. He tilted his head to the
side, wondering if it was a ploy.
So she is waiting for me to come to her,
he thought.
“Your mother and I stared at each other
for almost an hour,” he laughed. “I waited for that stubborn ooman to attack
me, and she never did. I circled her, and she circled me.” Shra’van smiled at
the thought. “So, I finally attacked her.”
Sa’tesh lunged at Kayla, and she was
barely able to avoid his attack. When he struck her, he caught her completely
off guard, and she toppled over. He watched her spit as she held her stomach.
Sa’tesh kicked her again before pulling out his blade. “Damn it Kayla, get up,”
he roared at her. “I knew you were weak. You put my father's fighting skills to
shame!” Sa’tesh watched her as she stood up.
“Fuck you,” she yelled. Sa’tesh could
tell she was getting tired.
“The only time you are strong is when you
are fucking,” he growled at her. Sa’tesh bent low and readied to attack as he
watched her anger grow.
“Oh, you are angry now?” he laughed. “I
will tell your half breed children about your pathetic fight…” Sa’tesh didn’t
see the blow to his upper mandible coming.
“Don’t ever talk about my children,” she
yelled at him as she switched weapons. She lunged and swiftly cut at his legs.
He tried to strike at her, but she moved in time and gave him a deep cut near
his ankle. He roared angrily as the blood started to ooze from his injuries.
“You bitch!”
“You old fool!” she mocked before
slapping him across the face. After realizing he was loosing too much blood, he
finally yielded. Kayla dropped to her knees and took deep breaths. Sa’tesh
limped over to the ceremonial table and opened the box that contained the
laser.
“Kayla,” he spoke in a low tone. She
stared at him for a moment before getting up and walking towards him.
“Let’s get your legs bandaged first,”
Kayla looked at his wounds and cringed. "I am sorry Sa'tesh."
“I will be fine,” he trilled softly as he
held her face. “You have earned your mark from me.” He burned the mark on her
face and stepped back. Sa’tesh was impressed that she never flinched. “You know
everything I said…”
“I know,” she nodded as she shook his
shoulder. He tried not to grimace from the pain. “I’m strong when I’m fighting
too.” She said. He laughed at her as
they left the hall.
“Who was waiting for you outside of the
hall?” Shra’van stood up and stretched. He noticed Sa’tesh had paused. Shra’van
turned to look at him. “Was my father there?”
“Lee’na was having another baby,” he
thought for a moment. “Ba’naj was there.”
Shra’van was not surprised by his answer.
“Did my mother’s scent change?”
“It always changes during a fight,”
Sa’tesh started to walk away. “We are done. And so is this conversation.”
“Was there anything going on between my
mother and Ba’naj?” Sa’tesh stopped and turned to look at the inquisitive male.
“What kind of question is that?” he
huffed.
“What kind of stall tactic are you
trying?” Shra’van growled.
“Do not challenge me boy!” Sa’tesh roared
at him. “Do not ask questions you do not want the answer to. Your questions
have nothing to do with who killed your mother!”
“I want to know,” Shra’van snarled. He
noticed Sa’tesh reaching for his blade, and he pulled his out before Sa’tesh
had a chance to get to his own.
Sa'tesh eyed the younger Yautja
thoughtfully. “Very well,” Sa’tesh nodded for Shra’van to sit. “You have been
warned.”
Kayla watched Ba’naj as he walked up to
her. Completely forgetting that Sa’tesh was standing there, they stared at each
other for a moment. “Are you well?” Ba’naj purred softly. Without any regard to
anyone else, he bent down and caressed his cheek with hers. Kayla let out a
soft sigh as she closed her eyes. Her hands submissively touched his hardened
biceps, giving them a soft squeeze before inhaling his scent. Sa’tesh eyes
widened as he watched them. For a moment they acted like a couple who haven’t
seen each other in years. Ba’naj affection towards her was evident. As if
remembering where he was, Ba'naj stopped and stared at her before touching her
new mark. “Beautiful.”
She nodded and glanced over at Sa’tesh.
He quickly looked away, neither one of them noticed him watching.
“Ba’naj, walk me to the medical lab,”
Sa’tesh grunted. “I hate to admit it, but I may not make it on my own.” He
looked over at Kayla and gave her a nod. She nodded in return as two guards
walked over to escort her back to the ship.
Sa’tesh stopped and leaned on the wall.
He sighed before punching Ba’naj in the stomach.
“Fuck!” Ba’naj snarled. “Injured or not.
If you touch me again, I will kill you.”
“I smelled her scent,” Sa’tesh growled.
They could hear someone coming and stopped talking until the guard passed.
“When she saw you, her scent changed. What in the hell is going on? You caress her like she is your mate! That is
my best friend’s daughter. You cannot do this, Ba’naj!”
“She refuses to allow me to challenge
Sh’lok,” Ba’naj growled angrily.
“Females do not have a say so in a
challenge.”
“She said if I do, she will refuse to be
with me,” Ba’naj started to pace back and forth. “I care deeply for Kayla.”
“This is not our way, Ba’naj,” Sa’tesh
reasoned with him. He could tell Ba'naj was equally as confused. “How long.”
Sa’tesh paused for a moment. “How long have you two...”
“It seems like forever,” he whispered.
“How long,” Sa’tesh barked.
“Ten years or more...”
“I do not believe you!” Sa’tesh roared.
“Kayla cares for her family.”
“And she cares for me,” Ba’naj stated as
a matter of fact.
“This can not continue Ba’naj,” Sa’tesh
shook his head. “You can be put to death. You and her both. Why are we fighting
so hard to make her elder, if you and she are sentencing yourselves to a brutal
death? Get your mates' permission and fuck each other, but please do not go on
doing this.”
“She is so emotional, Sa’tesh,” Ba’naj
tried to explain. “I never felt this with P’tea or the others. I understand why
Maha’vin wanted to kill for her. I know now why your sons went crazy for her.
She is very special.”
“I can not believe you stand here talking
about another male's mate in such a fashion,” Sa’tesh growled as they started
to walk again. “You will be her final fight in two days. If she survives
tomorrow, I am automatically assuming she will be made elder.”
“I may have lost my way when it comes to
mating, but I will not dishonor the ritual by allowing her to win.”
“So, he did fight my mother?” Shra’van
was pacing back and forth. Hearing these things about his mother angered him.
He wanted to kill Sa’tesh for knowing how dishonorable his mother was and
keeping everything a secret. He was already picturing twenty seven different
ways to kill Ba’naj.
“I heard roars and I heard cries, along
with the clatter of weapons hitting the floor,” he sighed. “When they walked
out of the room, your mother's scent was so strong I mated with Nam’rah for
half the night and almost killed her. Sou-sha was also there, and I believe she
could smell the scent from Ba’naj, but she left. I have never smelled a
females' scent that strongly. I went to the medical lab, assuming my olfactory
organ was not functioning correctly. Only they know, if it was a fight or if it
was mating.” Sa’tesh watched the angry male try to calm himself down. Shra’van
roared and brought his fists down on the table with such force, the table broke
in half. “For the sake of my family, I would think of killing everyone whom
knew of these atrocities.” Shra'van glared at Sa'tesh. The elder was old, but
fought just as great as his mother. Shra'van quickly remembered the friendly
battle he lost to Sa'tesh just days ago. “Due to the long and close dealings of
our families I think it is time you leave my ship, leader Shra'van.”
Shra'van nodded as Sa’tesh walked out of
the room. “Wait,” Sa’tesh turned to look at the young leader walking closer to
him. “Do you think Ba’naj could have killed my mother because she refused to be
his mate?”
“Of course not,” Sa’tesh barked. “I hate
to say it, but my friend went a bit crazy for your mother. Though he would
never say it aloud, I honestly think he was in love with her. Ba'naj would have
never harmed Kayla.”
Shra’van nodded and looked away.
“I must tell you, I can understand your
pain.”
“You have no fucking idea,” Shra’van
growled. “Did you ever find out your mother was a disgrace?”
“No, but my father went crazy and
befriended an ooman, your grandfather. I wanted to kill everyone who knew and
everyone involved, but I could not fathom the deaths of my brother and son.
Killing Kayla would have been useless, so I allowed her to live.” Sa’tesh
cocked his head to the side as he watched Shra’van’s jaw twitch at the mention
of his mother’s possible death. He slowly placed his hand on his dagger as he
continued, “And now here stands her eldest son, a half blooded ooman, with the
great bravery of a full blooded Yautja and leader of a glorious vessel. He boldly
stands before me, an elder, questioning his mother's death and my close
friend's integrity. Did I make the right choice?”
“You gave her a Naginata,” Shra’van
reminded him. “Your father’s Naginata.”
“I gave her the Naginata of a Yautja I
loathed,” he huffed. “It meant nothing to me. My father was a disgrace. As I
stated earlier, I do understand Shra’van.”
They both stared at each other for a moment.
Sa'tesh eyes widened when Shra'van rudely turned his back to him.
Shra'van walked back into the room. He
stared at the broken table and suddenly felt the pain in his hands.
“Hearing my mother was a whore hurts
worse than this,” his mumbled to himself as blood oozed from the deep cut. He
thought of returning to his father’s ship and killing Ba’naj, but he wanted to
know more. He wanted to know what happened in that room, and Ba’naj was not
going to tell him. He walked over to the com device that was on the floor and
picked it up. “Ready my cruiser. I am heading back to my ship.” He knew one
person that would know the truth and it was going to be hard to get her to
speak.
(Mi’tra and Kuja’s Ship)
Ta’noj practiced until he could barely
stand. He knew when he returned home, there would be a great battle. As long as
his family was safe, he no longer cared. Ta’noj knew that his family would take
care of Jasmine. He couldn’t believe how careless he had been to leave a Yautja
alive.
He could smell Jasmine approaching and
growled with lust. He wanted her, but for weeks she wouldn’t even touch him at
night. He tried to pretend to have a bad dream, but she told him to shut up
before going back to sleep. Ta’noj tried to concentrate on his movements.
Jasmine watched in amazement as he
practiced. Sweat poured from his sculpted body as he turned and leaped,
twirling his weapon with obvious skill.
She couldn’t believe a being as large as he was could be so quick and
agile. She sat against the wall and folded her legs. Jasmine rested her hand
against her chin and continued watching with fascination.
“What are you doing here?” he finally
asked.
“Looking for you,” she held out her
water, and he stopped. Ta’noj sat next to her on the floor and drank the water
slowly before glancing back at Jasmine again.
“Your hair is beautiful,” he nodded. The
beads Kuja put in her hair made her eyes sparkle. He could tell Kuja really
liked her. Some of the stones in her
hair had belonged to their mother. Ta’noj touched her cheek. “How do you feel?”
“Great,” she smiled, “But don't get any
ideas I still never want to have sex with you again.” Ta’noj grunted at her
naivety. If her sense of smell was anything like theirs, he could take her in
the sparring hall if he wanted to. He tilted her head up to see the plugs still
in place.
“When you become pregnant you will have
to remove those plugs.”
“I’m not having kids any time soon,”
Jasmine smiled at him as he growled at her. She couldn’t see the evil Yautja
that Kuja described.
“What is the point of being my mate, if
you refuse me?” he growled angrily at her.
Jasmine shook her head. This isn’t the first
time he became upset over the fact that they had not tried again. “Ta’noj you
make it sound like we are married.”
“Married?” he questioned as he thought of
the word. “If that means life long commitment, then yes, we are.” Jasmine
stared at him for a moment, and he noticed the color fade from her rosy cheeks.
“When I asked you to be my
mate…”
“I thought it was like dating,” she
blurted. She was about to stand up but he pushed her back down.
“Dating,” he barked at her. “Where in the
hell am I going to take you on a date? Space?”
Jasmine put her head down and started to
laugh.
“I see nothing funny, Female.”
“Oh Ta’noj,” Jasmine got on her knees and
wiped the sweat from his face slowly. “I didn’t know I was married. I knew it
was serious but I didn’t know it was a life long commitment. I thought it was
almost like an engagement. That’s why I asked for a ring.”
“You have so much to learn Jasmine,” he
sighed.
She looked into his eyes, seeing the
small specks of white and the brown in his eyes almost looked hazel. When he
tilted his head to the side, she could swear they changed colors. “I love your
eyes.”
“Love is a strong word in your language,”
he reminded her. He touched her face and started to purr. Jasmine closed her
eyes as his mandibles nipped up and down on her arm.
“It’s just your eyes,” she whispered as
she tried to control her urge to moan.
“You love my tongue too,” he teased
softly.
“Yes well,” Jasmine gasped as he bit down
on her neck and groaned. He could smell her excitement as he tugged her neck
gently. Ta’noj forcefully pulled her body closer.
“Ta’noj.”
“Shh,” he purred in her ear. “Tonight we
will be together again.” He bit on her neck harder as he cradled her head in
his hand. His other hand roamed over her breasts and squeezed on her waist.
When he received a satisfying moan of assurance from her, he pulled away. “I
must practice. Leave before I force myself on you.”
“That would be rape.” She tried to stand,
but he stood up first and helped her.
“You are mine,” he trilled softly. “It is
not rape if you are begging for it.”
“Do you hear me begging?”
“Not yet,” he smiled.
(The Gro’thon-ious Ship)
When Shra’van docked with his ship, he
was surprised to see two of his brothers waiting for him in the main docking
bay.
“What are you two doing here?” he
questioned as he shook Su’ram and Mordecai’s shoulders.
“Father told us what you were doing,”
Su’ram growled. “Why did you not inform us, Shra’van? We could have helped
you.”
“Did you find out anything?” Mordecai
crossed his arms as he stared at his brother. Shra’van stood quietly,
processing the question. “Your silence means yes. Come and let us talk about
it.”
“I ...” Shra’van thought for a moment. He
hadn't had time to decide if he was going to tell his family. “I do not know if
I am ready to talk about it.”
“Not sure if you are ready to talk?!”
Su’ram barked. “She was our mother too, Shra’van! How dare you withhold
information on your progress?”
“If you were so concerned, why didn’t
either one of you investigate this sooner!” he roared at them. The workers in
the docking bay stopped their tasks and watched their leader yell at his
brothers. “I cannot tell you what I found out because, not even I believe it.”
He shook his head in disbelief. “I cannot talk about it.” They watched him walk
away.
“Do you think it is that bad?” Su’ram
questioned, worried.
“Worse,” Mordecai mumbled. “Give him some
time. He will tell us what is wrong.”
Shra’van felt guilty for snapping at his
brothers. He remembered fondly when they were born. His mother and father were
so happy, but concerned that they would not survive. A female having three
children at once was never heard of in their society, and Pahel didn’t fully
know what to do. In the end Su’ram, Mordecai and Kuja were fine and healthy.
Shra’van growled playfully at his
daughter. She turned and ran up to him, practically jumping in his arms.
“Careful Aa’hana,” he laughed, dropping his bag to hold her tightly. He didn’t
realize how much he had missed his family until now.
“Do I really have a bad uncle?” she asked
softly. Her expression changed, and he could see the sadness in her eyes. “Some
of my friends say I have an evil uncle.”
“No, you do not have an evil uncle,”
Shra’van shook his head as he stared at her. He brushed her hair from her face
and sat her down. “He is just hurt and upset. You will meet him soon.” He
promised as they walked to his quarters. Ta’noj had so many nieces and nephews
he had never met. Shra’van just prayed that he would get a chance to know them
all.
When he walked into his quarters, Pu’sha
trilled softly. He growled playfully at his mate before walking over to her.
Pu’sha locked her mandible with Shra’van’s as his purr deepened against her
cheek.
“I missed you greatly,” she whispered. “I
was prepared a few hours ago for your arrival.”
“If I take you now, it will not last
long,” he admitted as he held her close. He inhaled her scent and growled.
Shra’van turned around. He had completely forgotten about Aa’hana. “Do me a
favor and go find your uncles. Tell them to meet me tonight in the main
conference room.” She nodded. “Aa’hana, tell them that I am sorry.”
“What are you sorry for?” Pu’sha took his
bag and walked to the bedroom.
“I snapped at them when I arrived,” he
sighed. “Where is Em’mi?”
“Would you like us both?” Em’mi trilled
softly as she walked into the room. He caressed her cheek.
“I need to speak to your mother about my
mother.”
“Shra’van,” Em’mi closed her eyes and
shook her head. “You know my mother will not talk about your mother; not since
their argument.”
“Please, where is she?” he questioned. “I
have questions that I think she knows the answers to.”
“I just left her quarters,” Em’mi gave
him a weary look. “She is old. Do not be too harsh with her.”
“I promise you,” he purred softly as he
caressed her face.
Lex was chatting with one of her
grandsons in the main living chamber, when Shra’van walked into her quarters.
She looked up at him and smiled. Every time she saw the young Yautja, she would
think of her friend Kayla.
“How are you, Shra’van?” she shook his
shoulder softly, but he reached down to hug her. Lex laughed as she remembered
how he used to despise humans and their touchy greetings.
“I really need to talk to you about…”
“No,” Lex snapped, cutting him off. She
turned and looked at her grandchild. “Leave us alone.” He nodded and left. Lex
turned and looked at Shra’van. “I do not wish to discuss your mother.”
“Please,” Shra’van sat down. “You are the
only one she ever really talked to. If anyone has the answers to my questions it
is you.”
“Your mother and I stopped talking to
each other when she became Elder,” Lex sighed. “There is nothing I can tell
you.”
“You can tell me why you stopped talking
to her,” Shra’van huffed and tried not to growl as Lex walked into another
room. He followed her. “I think I know why, Alexa.” She turned to look at him.
“Back then, I could not smell the male
scents like your mother could,” she quickly wiped the corner of her eyes. “I could
never understand what she was talking about.”
Shra’van sat across from her and held her
hand. “Tell me about my mother and Ba’naj.”
(Flashback)
“We need to talk,” Kayla held Lex for a
moment.
Lex laughed. She hadn’t seen Kayla in years.
She looked at the design on her face and sighed.
“It is so beautiful,” Lex traced the wavy
markings on her friend's face. It was obvious that she wasn’t there to talk
about her life as an elder. “Shra’van is fine if you’re worried about him.”
“I have no need to worry about my son,”
Kayla smiled. “I know he will be great. The Jafren told me.”
“What’s troubling you?” Lex patted the
pillows next to her, and Kayla sat down.
“I need to tell someone...” Kayla’s eyes
started to water.
“Oh God, honey, what’s wrong?” Lex rubbed
on her back softly.
“I wish you understood what it is like to
smell a male Yautja, especially in heat,” Kayla shook her head. “Lex, it is a
scent that’s indescribable.” Lex looked at her carefully.
“What are you saying?”
“Imagine an old boyfriend on earth who
wears an aftershave that turns you on,” Kayla tried to explain. “Now imagine a
cold winter day and he wraps his arms around you.” Lex was quiet as she looked
at Kayla. “Now imagine that feeling ten times as great. That comfort and warmth
and wanting. That’s how I start to feel every time I’m in the room with
Ba’naj.”
“Wha? Ba’naj?” Lex snapped. “The older
male with the perverted mouth?” Kayla nodded. “What did you do Kayla?”
“Pahel told me on several occasions that
it is harder for me to control my hormones because I am not used to the
different pheromones that the Yautja males emit,” she stammered. “I tried for
years to control myself around him. He knew it. At first, he found it amusing,
and it was nothing but just flirtatious banter, even in front of Sh’lok.” Kayla
looked up at Lex. “One night, I watched him in the shadows practicing with his
Naginata. He walked over to me and grabbed me. Lex, his scent was so strong I
lost my balance.”
“Are you serious?” Lex touched Kaylas
hand as it shook softly.
“It intensified. I felt dizzy, my body
was on fire and yet the only thing I could think of was mating with him. For
that moment, I forgot my family and my mate.”
“Tell me you didn’t,” Lex stood up and
crossed her arms. “Tell me you ran as far away from him as possible.” Kayla was
silent. Lex sighed and shook her head. “Kayla, you stayed away from him after
that, right?”
“Since I became Elder, Sh’lok has treated
me differently,” she sighed and stared off into space as if she was thinking.
“We even had an argument about my status being higher than his. I know it does
not help, and it is not an excuse for what I have done.” Kayla shook her head
in disbelief. “Ba’naj even trained me for my fight to become elder.”
“Why hasn't he challenged Sh’lok?”
“I will not allow him,” Kayla blurted.
“He is a better fighter than Sh’lok. I would die if my mate was killed because
of me.”
“How long has this been going on?” Lex
knew they'd been away from the planet for at least twenty years.
“Way before we arrived on the planet,” she
whispered. “I, I love him.”
“Damn it Kayla,” Lex snapped. She started
to point at her. “You have no fucking clue what you are doing! You know how
territorial males are. Yautjas will start wars over their mates. You have been
through that with Maha’vin and Ga’gan. Then Sh’lok and Ga’gan. Let us not
forget Sh’lok and Kul’vir. Now Ba’naj? What the hell is your problem? And how
much are you going to put your mate through?”
“I really wish you understood, Lex,”
Kayla sighed. “For you to bring up my past is wrong. None of those situations
was my fault. Maha’vin tried to kill me, and I was told Ga’gan was dead and to
move on. Kul’vir had always been protective of me. This is my fault. Ba’naj was
my choice.”
Lex shrugged her shoulders. “Is my mate
next? Do you smell Scar?”
Kayla looked at her in shock before
standing up. “Yes I smell him, but no, I do not want your mate or your male
children!” They stared at each other for a moment. Lex had never seen Kayla
look at her in such a way. “Maybe I should go.”
“Maybe you should,” Lex mumbled. She
didn’t say anything until they reached the door. “Contact me when you decide to
end this dangerous affair with Ba’naj.”
“Well then my friend, I guess this is
goodbye,” Kayla nodded sadly before walking away.
Lex looked at Shra’van who stared at her
blankly. He finally looked away. “She loved him? It was not just a sexual need?
My mother had feelings for another male?” He looked back at Lex. “Is this a
common practice among ooman’s?”
“It is not uncommon,” Lex stood up
slowly. Her grey hair or the wrinkles that slowly started to appear over the
years didn’t tell her age, but her slow movements, along with the aches and
pains in her body did. “I was angry with your mother for so long. I never
understood her until recently.”
She walked to the door and Shra’van took
that as a hint to leave. He stood in front of her and Lex stepped closer to
him. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. Lex groaned softly before opening
her eyes and looking at Shra’van. “I wish I could call your mother and say,
‘Kayla, I understand. I now know how you feel and I’m so sorry.'” She shook her
head. “I will never justify your mother actions, but now I can certainly
understand them.” She closed her eyes again and smiled. “Leave now. My mate is
coming.”
