Chapter 6 – Traveling
and disagreements
All he had to do was
pull the trigger, but he simply couldn't do it. Rick watched as Evy
rode away on her horse, turning around to mockingly wave back at him.
The others came running out of the ruined city, the moment he dropped
to the ground, the gun falling from his limp hands. All that could
now be seen of Evy was a cloud of dust vanishing on the horizon.
“You could have stopped her.”
Ardeth looked extremely
angry, but Rick ignored him, staring off into the distance. 'What if
she's still in there? She has to be in there. She can't be gone.'
Looking up, Rick saw that Alex had knelt down next to him, a look of
angry sorrow on his face.
“You think she's still there,
dad?”
“Yes. And I will bring her
back.”

Later that day, they
had returned to the temple getting the directions to the next key.
This time, the location was hidden in a short riddle, that they still
had to solve. Gathering around their campfire, they tried to work
out, were they were headed next.
“Alex, can you please tell us
the riddle again?”
“Sure dad. 'Protecting the
book, protecting the key are the all-seeing eyes. Mother of Egypt
guarding her home and all that is hers. In her home the key to her
book can be found.'”
“Do you have any idea, where
the key is hidden?”
“Sure, it has to be a temple
of Isis. She's the mother of Egypt and it's her book we are trying to
open.”
Ruffling Alex hair,
Rick patted his head. “You're as clever as your mom.”
Rick regretted his words as soon as he had spoken them. Gloom had
instantly spread over the group like a black shroud shading the sun.
Trying to lighten the mood, Jonathan threw in:” There are
hundreds of temples dedicated to Isis strewn all over Egypt. How do
we know, which is the right one?”.
“But only the temple in Phylae
is her home.” Ardeth remarked, before continuing: “The
fastest way to get there would be going back to the Nile and finding
a plane, that takes us down there. It would take far too long, to
ride the distance.”

Having finally decided
on their course of action, Alex and Jonathan went to sleep. It didn't
take long for Jonathan's deep snores to fill the quiet desert night.
Rick was sitting outside, staring into the fire, when Ardeth joined
him.
He made a cup of tea
for himself and offered some to Rick, who declined with a slight hand
gesture. The silence hung heavy in the air, stretching between the
two of them as time passed by. Ardeth looked like he wanted to say
something, so Rick waited for him to speak.
“You could have stopped her.”
The Med-jai's slightly
accusing tone angered Rick. 'As if he has any idea, what it's like
for me.' He had already wondered to himself, why he didn't shoot and
had come to the conclusion, that he still loved Evy, despite
everything that had transpired since Ahm-Shere.
“She's still my beloved wife.”
Had he just imagined Ardeth cringing slightly at his words? Unlikely.
Must have been the flames and the shadows creating illusions to his
eyes. Why should the Med-jai cringe at the mention of his wife?
“Rick, my friend, this is not
your wife. This is Nefertiri. Her soul was destroyed, when the
princess took over her body.”
“No.”, Rick jumped up
from his sitting position and started pacing around the fire. “I
refuse to believe that. I can't loose her.”
“She is already gone.”
“NO.”, Rick was
screaming now, his anger at the injustice
of the world, his wife and himself poured out of him, directed at the
only currently available target. “YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S
LIKE. I CAN'T STAND TO LOOSE HER.”
Ardeth could
understand, that Rick needed an outlet for his anger. He was even
willing to be that outlet, if it would help the other man. But being
accused of such ignorance when it came to loss, angered him and
brought out the temper he so rarely showed. Getting up, he walked
over to Rick and stood right in front of him. Grabbing O'Connell's
shoulders, he replied.
“Are you really that ignorant
and selfish. This isn't about you or your wife or anybody. The whole
WORLD is in danger.”
“I don't give a damn about the
world.”
Turning around, Rick
angrily stormed into the tent. Sighing to himself Ardeth sat down at
the fire and made himself another cup of tea. 'He'll come around
eventually.' At least Ardeth hoped so. Without Rick's help it would
be very difficult to stop Nefertiri. And besides that he didn't want
to loose the small friendship they had formed. 'It's all I can ever
hope for.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning came,
finding the traveling group awake and already well on their way
towards the Nile. The air was still heavy with tension, hovering
between Rick and Ardeth. The two of them hadn't exchanged more than
the bare necessities and Jonathan and Alex were wondering about what
had transpired.
Their attempts to
lighten the mood were either dismissed or ignored by the two gloomy
men riding in front and at the back of their group. Finally giving up
on their fruitless trying, Alex and Jonathan kept to themselves,
playing cards and leaving the other two to their thoughts.
'I won't talk to him.
He's the one who was in the wrong. I'm not selfish and ignorant. Is
it so hard to understand, that I don't want to loose my wife, because
I care about her? It's not even about love anymore. At least not real
love, more like the love I would have for a sister. Why do I even
care, that he's angry at me. He's nothing more than an useful
ally to me.'
'I won't look at him. I
have the self-control to not look at him. He's still angry at me
anyway. He will never know how well I know the feeling of not having
the person, who I love. I shouldn't let my own feelings get the
better of me. He loves his wife Evy, so if she's still there I should
help him get her back. Then at least he can be happy.'
It was already well
into the night, when they reached the small town at the shores of the
Nile. But Ardeth had insisted, that they travel as far as the town,
giving them the opportunity to leave early in the morning and have a
night of comfortable rest.
The next day, they went
looking for a plane and to their luck it didn't take long to find
one. Although it looked like the first strong gust of wind would
knock it into a thousand pieces, the pilot assured them that it was
save. And the price was absolutely reasonable, which finally
convinced them to take the chance. They were fearless adventurers
after all.
The ride on the plane
was more than bumpy and Jonathan generously fed the Nile crocodiles
with the remains of his breakfast. He still looked a bit green, when
they landed at their destination. Now all they had to do, was take a
boat over to the temple island and hope, that they had been quicker
than Nefertiri.
