Chapter 6
SLAM!
Dark, so dark that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Slam smelled of human waste and unclean floors. The hollow screams of the innocent being tortured. Prisoners living in turmoil, killing one another.
In such a place Riddick’s heart only grew colder. His Nadia had thrown him to the
wolves. The one person he loved. The only person he fought for other than himself. She let Dylan put him in this place. She was the source of his pain. The reason he'd been attacked in the dark. He was crushed and vowed vengeance. He hated not being able to fight back because he was blind in the dark. But his hatred kept him alive. He wouldn't let them kill him but without relief, he would die before long. He needed to be able to see his enemies in here.
But how? How?
He dug up a doctor and he paid him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on his eyeballs. So he could see who was sneaking up on him in the dark. Riddick devised an escape plan. Beating up guards and prisoners in the dark no longer amused him. The next guard he fought would be most important. It would define the next 10 years of his life.
He laid in wait for the perfect opportunity. He grabbed the guard and simultaneously broke his neck. Taking his keys, he made for the gates. He counted them as he came a few steps closer to freedom. When he got to the 3rd gate, the alarm sounded and he knew it was only a matter of time before he had hundreds of guards on his trail.
Once he made it through the gates, he knew he was home free. Now outside the prison, he had running room. He'd planned for this and ran like a thoroughbred. He made it to a patch of woods just south of the prison. Quietly, he moved through the trees. He knew it would only take the sound of a snapping branch for him to be found. He'd walked all night but he knew he'd have to find cover before the sun covered him.
His newfound night vision wouldn't hold up in daylight. He came across an old house and a barn
that seemed to be deserted. Exhausted, he ventured to think he could take some rest but knew he had to keep moving. He thought that this might have only been some well thought out plan by the authorities. Could it be a trap? It didn’t matter for he had to find some suitable eyewear.
He surveyed the area carefully before making his move. When the time was right, he snuck in, moving swiftly yet steady. He came across a set of goggles that would be the vein of his existence.
That was the first time Riddick escaped slam. For the first time in 10 years, the rays of the sun warmed his skin. Riddick took the first ship he came across off Planet Dread and hoped to never return.
It was when he returned to Planet Deep, that he began a life for himself. He bought his cover by renting a room from a blind woman. He'd be safe because she couldn’t see him. He found it easy to take rest during the day and prowled the streets at night. Riddick had become a regular at
the local bars. He drowned the loneliness of his existence in alcohol and temporally cured it with
women, who had fallen for the mysterious stranger.
He had lost focus on getting revenge on the people who were accountable for him losing 10 years of freedom. But one night, it all came flooding back to him. He was tinkering around with a piloting simulation booth when he caught a glimpse of someone out of the corner of his eye. Taking full view of the person, he thought he was dreaming. There, standing under a streetlight so poised, fetching, and beautiful was Nadia. Her skin was still so evenly brown. Her hourglass shape seemed to be glowing. He caught himself lusting over the woman she had become. He yearned to take her into his arms once more.
Riddick, who loved to move throughout his house in the buff, scrambled to get dressed. He was peeking out of the window every so often. He pulled on his boots and broke for the door. Down on the street, he saw his prey move from the street to the alley. Patiently, he followed her from one alley and into the next.
He followed her closely until she stopped. He watched her as she waited in that alley for something. She was ducking up and down, down and up, like something was wrong.
She's looking for something, He thought as he lifted his goggles and stepped out further.
Then just like that, she was gone. She disappeared. He stepped clear into the alley.
"Where did she go?" He pondered.
Riddick ran to the end of the alley and from the end of that one to the next. She was nowhere to be found. He growled at the thought of having to give up the ghost. Winded, Riddick took the alleys back home.
Two seconds in the door and he was already undressing. Now shirtless, he announced to his home computer.
"Run a search for information on Nadia Steele." He said removing his boots and wiggled his toes.
"Data found." The computer sounded.
"Read data." He commanded.
"Nadia, born on an unknown planet. Spent the first 6 years of her life in an orphanage. Sent to the foster home of Max and Vivian Blackwell, age 10. Severely abused by, Dylan Blackwell, biological daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell. Victim in the states case against Richard B. Riddick. Run away at age 15. End Data." The computer chimed.
Riddick sat there for a second. Riddick's blood stirred with hatred. "Is that it?" Riddick asked skeptically.
"Data End." The computer chimed again.
"Access DaUnderground.com." Riddick commanded. DaUnderground was a site for people living under the eye of the law. These included runaways, con-artists and escaped convicts.
"Access confirmed."
"Search Nadia Steele again."
Riddick leaned back in his chair as the computer ran off the information to him. It seemed he had hit the jackpot because the computer spouted off everything but her blood type. Ms. Nadia couldn't hide any longer. Riddick had found her and tomorrow night he was going to make her pay.
Just as the sun began to rise, Riddick found himself in bed dreaming. The dream was so sweet, that he slept peacefully. He desired this type of redemption and he knew that he would enjoy it. Riddick’s sensuous lips curled up to an evil grin.
As he slept, he dreamt that he got a two for one deal. He didn’t have to search for Dylan, because she was right there too. He sliced and diced her ugly mug until she looked worse than Gollum’s evil clone gone wrong. I guess the ring possessed her too. Her last dying words were “My Precioussss.”
The next morning, he woke up with a mission to complete. He boarded the first ship that was transporting to Planet Dread. Riddick thought that his trail was untraceable, but the mercs had tracked it.
