Chapter 58
The next morning, Zeus awoke before any of his siblings. Hera, having refused once again to share her quarters with Poseidon, ordered him to bring Hestia when he had announced his desire for sleep. Thus, Demeter’s bed held two gods that dimly lit morning, Poseidon softly snoring while Zeus lay staring at the ceiling, contemplating the events of last night. Rubbing sleep from his eyes, Zeus rose and wandered outside, watching the sky brighten as the sun rose. He thought he heard a distant neighing beyond the forest, and wondered if any mares would give birth to winged foals. He hoped so. Once the Olympian leader had supposed that the rest of his family could be waking, he reentered the cottage. He needed to speak to Hades. Zeus actually felt his heartbeat increase at the sight of the closed door to his own bedchamber. He briefly considered knocking before entering, but it was not in his nature to do so, particularly not when the room in question was his. Hades and their sister were still situated in bed when he slowly pushed the door open, but neither was asleep. Zeus almost expected Demeter to object to his entry, but she merely gave him a wary gaze and remained silent. Hades, on the other hand, looked away as soon as he noticed who their visitor was. "I would like a moment alone with our brother," Zeus said gravely. The goddess finally nodded, preparing to leave the bed as well as the room. Hades kept his eyes riveted to his tightly wound hands, refusing to meet Zeus' gaze. His shame was still too great. Demeter did not speak until she was virtually standing face to face with Zeus. When he took a step toward the bed, she put a hand against his chest to stop him. "Be gentle with him," she said, her request somewhere between a warning and a plea. "I will," Zeus replied, and Demeter seemed pleased with this, exiting the room. Hades dreaded to look up and discover the look of anger or disappointment that was likely on Zeus' face. The Olympian leader took a seat on the edge of the bed, gently grasping his older brother's hand in his own. "Hades..." he said. "I want to apologize to you." When Hades finally looked into his brother’s eyes, he could only do so for a moment. His face twisted in misery and he tearfully looked away, hiding his face once more in a pillow. Zeus felt hopeless. Were he on the battlefield, he would know exactly what to do, but now… he had no clue as to how to help his brother. “Please do not hide yourself from me, Hades?” he begged, his voice just a whisper. One of his hands carefully touched his brother’s head, and this time he did not receive the reaction of the previous night. “Do not cry, my sweet brother,” he said. He thought perhaps the low tone of his voice was helping. “Do not cry. There is no need to be afraid. No need to be upset. I promise.” Hades turned his head toward his youngest sibling, and though he would not make eye contact, at he was no longer hiding his visage from the god that he loved. Zeus gave his brother a sweet smile, hoping it would help to communicate his patience to his fellow god, older and yet much smaller than the leader. “There we are,” he said. “There is my beautiful brother’s face. If only he might smile.” Hades wanted to smile, to be happy to see his betrothed, but he could not. He still felt shame for his behavior. “I am sorry,” Hades muttered. “I am the one who came here to apologize, dear,” Zeus replied. “Not you. You need not apologize. I was inconsiderate.” "I promised you..." Hades began, still not willing to accept that he was not at fault here. "You should have told me to stop," Zeus interrupted. "I had no idea... how you felt. If you had asked me, I would have stopped." "I know... I just did not want to... deny you this." "You need time to heal," Zeus said, cupping his brother's face in his hand. The streaks of bitter tears on the pale cheeks were heartbreaking to take in. If only he could go back in time to the previous night... "I love you, Hades," he said, tenderly touching and caressing the other's nape. "And I hope that you would forgive me." For a long while, Hades remained completely silent, and Zeus considered repeating his apology when the older god finally responded. "I forgive you..." he whispered, afraid that his voice would once again fail him. The two brothers were reunited in a gentle embrace, and Zeus almost bashfully asked if Hades would mind sharing the bed with him again the following night. "I would like that," Hades admitted, curling up against his brother's larger, stronger frame. He was surprised that Zeus even wanted to be near him after his behavior the previous night. “I was in a panic last night,” Hades clarified. “I thought that—” “You don’t need to explain, darling,” Zeus interrupted him, giving his brother an affectionate nuzzle. “But…” Hades disengaged from his beloved long enough to sit completely upright. “But what if this happens again?” “Would you believe that it would?” Zeus asked with concern. “My mind… it kept going back to that day…” Hades said. Even now he could still see those monsters’ grinning faces. As he remembered, he felt a gentle kiss on his cheek, and it brought him back to the present. “I was so caught up in keeping away the fear and repulsion,” he continued, “that I felt nothing. I do not want to simply feel nothing.” “The next time we try,” Zeus replied, “you shall feel pleasure again. I promise. I would be ashamed that I could not bring you such satisfaction.” He kissed his brother a second time, and held him close. “You are truly not angry?” Hades asked. “Because I felt numb?” “It is no fault of your own. We may try again later, but in the meantime, I can wait.” Hades finally managed a genuine smile, and he kissed his brother back. He chuckled as he did, and Zeus pulled away for just a moment. “Does my beard tickle you?” he asked with a grin. Hades nodded, and his brother joined him in laughter. “You know you will feel the urge again, brother,” the elder god said. “Will it not bother you that I am not of use?” “Not when our sisters are so accommodating,” Zeus answered, then adding further when he saw a peculiar look on his fellow god’s face. “Perhaps not Hera, thanks to her spiteful behavior… but Demeter and Hestia will always be willing.” “And Poseidon?” Hades suggested playfully. Zeus laughed and his fingers delved into other places where he knew his brother was ticklish. * Hera had begun to dread the approach of nighttime ever since her brothers' return. Not only was she driven out of the spacious bedchamber she had started considering as her own, but here she was, bound to share a bed with her sister to accommodate for Zeus and Hades' need to room together. This is not fair, the goddess thought bitterly as she finally abandoned her seat in the common room to seek out her deficient sleeping place. She hoped dearly that Hestia would already be asleep. The other goddess, while not as aggravating as some, had a tendency to irritate Hera with her questions on whether or not her sister was alright, and if there was something she could do. Unless you can throttle Hades in his sleep, you can keep your mouth shut, Hera thought, rubbing at her temples before slowly and carefully opening the door to where she expected to find Hestia soundly asleep. The sight which greeted her eyes was enough to shock her out of her tired haze. The bed held not only one goddess, but two, as well as Zeus, busy bouncing Hestia up and down on his lap while Demeter fondled the Olympian leader's chest and nipples with both her hands and tongue. All three of them looked up at the sound of an opening door, and Zeus briskly motioned at her to exit. His callous dismissal of her made Hera's surprise morph into anger. "I have to sleep somewhere!" she snarled, enraged at how she was being treated. "You will have to find another bed for your fornication!" "Poseidon has a bed to himself," Zeus said plainly. "Go to him." So aghast at such a discharge was she that Hera wished she were the one to possess the power of lightning. Rather than stay and argue such a trivial matter, she slammed the already shoddy door of the old cottage so roughly that it jammed and promptly stormed down the hall. Should anyone attempt to reopen the door, it would come loose completely. Zeus however, did not seem to notice or care. He continued to thrust, enjoying the sight of Hestia’s breasts bouncing in time to each plunge. Demeter did not stop in stimulating her brother’s flesh, even though she knew that the bedroom door was good as ruined. Secretly she had procured a small amount of satisfaction at Zeus’ rebuking of Hera, and she kissed her leader on the lips as thanks. Hera was sorely tempted to take the remainder of her fury out on Hades as he slept peacefully in his and Zeus’ bed, but she knew such amusement would only last moments. Zeus’ reaction to such treatment of his betrothed would last much longer. Instead, the goddess all but threw open the door to Demeter’s bedroom. As predicted, Poseidon lay within, asleep and oblivious to what he was about to experience. “WAKE UP,” Hera snarled. Poseidon drowsily stirred, waking far too slowly for his sister’s preference, but he awoke fully when she repeated herself and a louder volume. “What do you want?” Poseidon asked accusingly, not at all pleased to see his eldest sister. “Zeus is in the middle of spilling his seed all over our sisters,” Hera stated. “I would like some sleep.” Her eyes narrowed. “Preferably between now and the time we leave for the mainland.” Poseidon rolled his eyes. Departing to head back home would not be for several more days. “What do you suggest?” he asked. “That I sleep on the floor again?” “If it is possible.” The god scowled. Returning home could not happen sooner.
