Chapter 54
As soon as Poseidon rose to his feet, he felt a rather uncomfortable wave of nausea originate from his stomach. Thinking that perhaps some fresh air would remedy this, he left the cave, relieved to be out of his two brothers’ sight. The intimate activities between Zeus and Hades had always made him embarrassed to witness, as he never knew where to rest his eyes in such moments. Unlike Poseidon had hoped, the brisk night air did nothing to cure his nausea. Realizing that his stomach was likely objecting to his earlier ferocious eating, the god wandered further from the cave in search of a place where he could safely throw up. * Hades was pleased to have provided Zeus with a climax despite his current inability to take his brother’s phallus in either end of his body. The leader treated Hades even more tenderly than usual, gently stroking and caressing his smooth, sweat-damp skin as though he were made of glass. “I am very happy to be with you again,” Zeus whispered, his hand patting the dark head resting on his chest. “Will you stay with me now?” Hades asked, almost afraid to hear the answer to his question. “Forever?” “I will,” Zeus replied without doubt or hesitation. “There is nothing to keep us apart now that our father is dead.” “Nothing could make me happier,” Hades said softly, nestling face into the curve of his beloved’s neck. “Though I am disappointed that I could not pleasure you in the way that you would prefer.” He felt his brother’s hand come to rest on his hair, falling over the curve of his head. “One day you will be ready,” Zeus replied. “Perhaps by the time we retrieve our sisters from Crete…?” “I hope so.” Hades was about to fall asleep once more when both gods heard a commotion outside. It sounded to them like someone colliding with the ground, followed by two cursing voices. Then a gag and a splash, followed by more raised voices. “For heaven’s sake, Poseidon!” Chiron shouted. “I’m sorry,” a miserable voice belonging to Poseidon replied. “Oh no,” Zeus said, chuckling. He got up to investigate, leaving Hades safely curled up in the warm bear fur. Cerberus, who had now woken from the noise, stared outside with all three sets of eyes. Moments later the elder god could hear Zeus laughing wholeheartedly. “Forgive me, Poseidon, but it is your own fault for eating so much.” Zeus again, perhaps reacting to an expression on Poseidon’s glum face. Hades laughed at what must have been going on outside the cave, but at the same time he had to feel sorry for his brother. The older god knew how it felt to be sick enough to vomit, and just the day before, he had made a fool of himself by falling down naked in front of the rest of the group. At least Poseidon was otherwise not hurt. This teaches him to stop eating once he is full, Hades thought. A few exchanges of muffled voices later, Zeus returned inside, alone. “He insists on sleeping outside,” he stated, joining his mate in the blankets again. “I have a feeling he does not want to trip over anymore of us in case he throws up again.” * Hades slept soundly for the first time since the titans’ assault upon him, and he was relieved to be awoken by his mate’s presence rather than the furred, lumbering form of Cerberus, affectionate though the beast was. The sun had barely started to rise when Zeus gently disengaged himself from Hades and dressed himself. “Where… you… going…?” Hades murmured, drowsily reaching out to touch the departing shape of his brother. Though warmly wrapped up in the bear’s hide, he still shivered at the loss of bodily contact. “I have some chores to do,” Zeus replied quietly, taking Hades’ hand and tucking it back in under the pelt. “You stay in bed and get a few more hours of sleep. I’m not going anywhere.” //You better not…// Hades thought but did not speak the words out loud. He was still weary and was already drifting back to sleep as Zeus ventured outside and started to prepare their small group for another departure. It was time for the Olympian brothers to return to Crete to retrieve their sisters. A nymph had already been sent out to give the goddesses news of their victory and give them time to prepare for a relocation. Zeus expected the reunion between Hades and Demeter to be a particularly joyous one. Chiron trotted up to Zeus as the god was busying himself outside the cave and wished him a good morning. “Where is Poseidon?” Zeus asked, frowning as he glanced at the centaur. “Throwing up, as far as I know,” the centaur said with a peculiar smile of amusement. Upon seeing his leader was not sharing such feelings, he elaborated. “He still looks rather sick. Perhaps he had a bad share of food.” Chiron thought about his suggestion and gave a joyless chuckle. “Poor fellow. What horrible luck if it’s true.” “Where has he wandered off to?” Zeus asked. “Where else but water?” Chiron asked, though his question seemed to be more of an observation. “He takes to it so well, when I saw him going in that direction, it only made sense.” More curious now than concerned, Zeus took the path to the little pool which had been made for Hades by Poseidon himself. Sure enough, he found his brother sitting in the spring, water up to his neck, silently looking miserable. Wilted flowers had more ardor in their appearance. “Are you alright?” Zeus asked. Poseidon hardly looked his way. “I am improved.” Zeus held back a laugh. “Had your share of food gone bad as Chiron suggested?” “Possibly.” Poseidon finally looked up. “Our victory has brought us such joy and relief. I may have taken my share too soon, before the fire had fully cooked it.” This was when Zeus finally allowed himself a chuckle. Poseidon’s head sank into the water and remained there for several minutes, leaving the younger god to wonder if he should pull him up by the hair. Poseidon finally resurfaced, wiping his long curls of hair back from in front of his face. “But you are improved from last night…?” the Olympian leader asked. “Mmn…” Poseidon leaned his head back against the bank of the pool. “The water helps." “But you cannot stay in your little pool for the rest of eternity,” Zeus pointed out. “I decided we would depart today, sail back to Crete to retrieve the rest of our family.” Poseidon glared at Zeus with obvious annoyance. “I know I cannot stay here forever,” he grumbled, “however, I would greatly appreciate if you could give me a few more hours. The water works as a remedy for my illness.” Zeus sighed irritably as well, cursing their back luck. “A few more hours I suppose I could give you. Besides, Hades is not even awake yet. You have until noon, brother,” the Olympian leader finally announced. “By noon we will travel, regardless of the state of your stomach. Perhaps this will teach you not to let your decisions be governed by your hunger.” “Zeus…!” Poseidon objected, appalled by the thought of travelling in his current condition. His initial attack of nausea had been quickly followed by another, and shortly after that, when there was nothing left in his stomach to expel, the god had experienced a violent cramping in his bowels. He hardly fancied the idea of asking his brothers to wait while he ducked behind a bush to pass stool every half hour. “I am certain you would not press this matter if Hades was the one experiencing my symptoms…” he muttered, submerging his head once again. The water thankfully blocked out the sound of Zeus’ reply. Poseidon stayed under the surface until his younger brother had left. Judging from the way Zeus was acting, it seemed as though he thought Poseidon had himself to blame for his illness. I do not let my stomach affect my thinking half as much as you let your phallus affect yours… he thought resentfully, almost wishing that Zeus would catch his illness. Thank goodness Zeus was never given the chance to do any of Demeter’s duties, the god thought. He would have been a terrible caregiver. Then again, this was not entirely true. As evidenced by his words on moments before, Zeus could be very sweet and caring, if only for Hades. Of course, Poseidon considered with a smirk as he reemerged from the water. Hades is after all the one Zeus loves the most. And makes love to the most… The notion of the sex between his two brothers made a strange idea form in Poseidon’s head, remembering the night he was awoken by Zeus. That night when his brother and leader could not simply tend to his own needs while missing Hades so desperately. Poseidon wondered if even in male form he could have conceived a child with Zeus. As quickly as the thought occurred to him, the god laughed, his chuckling interrupted by the cramps which had not yet left him completely. The discomfort in his bowels brought Poseidon back to reality. If only he was with child. It would have been less of an ordeal. This, however… this was from something in the meat. And as much as he hated to admit to Zeus or anyone else – himself included – it was his own doing. The noonday sun hung in the sky like a fixed ornament. Hades was fully awake by then and was testing the use of his formerly twisted ankle. Cerberus remained by his side until the eldest god was certain that he could walk. “Are we leaving soon?” he asked as Zeus greeted him with a kiss. “Yes. Assuming our brother has not expired.” The grin on Zeus’ face let Hades know his beloved was jesting, and he had to laugh in spite of the situation as well. Poor Poseidon did not necessarily deserve such pain, but Hades was amused at the irony that for once, someone else in his family was unwell. A few minutes later, Poseidon returned to the camp, wrapped in a drape of fabric and still slightly damp, but looking improved. The drape of fabric meant to dry him was small and had been of little help. However, the color had come back to the god’s cheeks and he looked more bothered by the chill in the air than what had previously ailed him. “Are you well now, brother?” Hades asked, hoping that his amusement over the other’s predicament was not terribly obvious. “Better,” Poseidon replied. “My insides seem to have calmed down from being in the water.” “Is there anything we can do?” the elder god inquired, stepping up alongside Poseidon to place a sympathetic hand on his shoulder. Before he could complete the gesture, however, Zeus’ hand closed around his arm and jerked him back almost violently. “You must not risk catching whatever he has,” the leader said. “Until he has made a full recovery, you must not go near him.” Both Poseidon and Hades felt the need to roll their eyes. Zeus being overprotective of their eldest brother was of course nothing new, and neither was the youngest Olympians jealousy, which he did not even attempt to hide. Poseidon suspected that his state of undress contributed just as much to Zeus’ behavior as his ailment. As if I would touch his betrothed… Poseidon thought, shaking his head. “This is just to keep you well, Hades,” Zeus claimed, having seen the reaction of both his brothers. “You have been unwell far too much already.” This was something that neither Hades nor Poseidon could contradict. “You do look much better than before,” Chiron called out. The gods had not noticed at first that Chiron was searching for something amongst the packed away belongings. “I feel much better,” Poseidon replied, obeying Zeus’ wishes and keeping his distance from Hades. “The water helped me greatly.” “How appropriate,” the half-god stated with a smile. He trotted over to the Poseidon, and in his arms was a dry robe. “Perhaps the water gave you the strength to heal yourself.” “Perhaps,” Poseidon answered. He stood still as the centaur wrapped the dry robe around him, returning the hug his half-brother gave him. Zeus huffed at the sight. “One would hope that your horse half is immune to whatever our brother has,” he stated. “Brother,” Chiron addressed Poseidon, ignoring Zeus’ statement. “If you are unwell at any time, you may ride on my back.” Zeus’s brow raised in disbelief. “Whatever happened to your promise that no one shall ride you like a beast of burden?” “I make very few exceptions,” the centaur said. “And unless Hades would like to take his place, Poseidon is welcome to rest himself should he fall ill again.” Hades could now sense conflict about to rear its ugly head, and he stepped in. “Zeus, brother…?” he asked sweetly. “While my ankle is fit for walking at present, I will let you know the moment I need assistance. That said, I may not feel so comfortable riding on Chiron. It would remind me of our poor winged horse. If Poseidon feels unwell again, he can rely on our brother.” “And who would carry you, dearest?” Zeus asked, and a playful smile briefly marked his features. “Would I?” “Oh goodness, no,” Hades answered. “You do not need any more to carry.” “Then what?” “Why not Cerberus? I am certain he would like to help.” “If you rode on that thing…” Zeus glanced at the three-headed beast. “…you would never get his stink out of your skin.” “I have shared a cave with him for almost two weeks,” Hades said. “I am intimately familiar with his odor by now. And strange as it is, I don’t find it quite as heinous anymore. Especially after I convinced him to take a bath.” He smiled at Cerberus, feeling something bordering on affection for the oversized canine. The beast, sitting at the mouth of the cave, had all three of its tongues hanging out, the three heads panting in rhythm. “Cerberus has completed its task,” Zeus said. “Perhaps it would be best to return him to his original dwelling place.” “To be all alone?” Hades asked, alarm in his voice. “There is no one more in the world like him. He only has us!” “We cannot bring him overseas with us,” the Olympian leader explained, finding it mildly amusing – but also exasperating – that Hades, who at first sight had not been willing to greet Cerberus now found it difficult to part from the beast. “He must stay here.” “I know that, but…” “He has taken good care of you, and I will reward him accordingly,” Zeus said reassuringly. “But he does not belong with us.” “He might be of a different opinion…” Hades quietly murmured, wondering if the beast was prepared to give up its task. Zeus began to smile, over what Hades had no idea until he spoke again. “Brother…” the youngest god said, “imagine if we took Cerberus with us back to Crete. Our sisters would react as we had when we first saw him. Even worse, considering Hera.” A wrinkle of worry edged into Hades’ brow at the thought of his eldest sibling. He truthfully had not thought of what she might do in response to the beast, if she could do anything. What if she poisoned him? And here he had been so dearly looking forward to reuniting with his sisters. Two of them, anyway… “Also,” Zeus added. “Cerberus is much too big for the boat. For all we know, he will cause it to sink.” Hades had to admit his say in the matter was in vain, and he nodded to show he understood. “I feel terrible leaving him here,” he said. “What if he does not understand?” “We will not be gone long, dearest brother,” Zeus reassured Hades, hand stroking at long locks of hair. “May we at least allow him to follow until we reach the boat? He could help protect us during the journey, in case of attack.” Zeus smiled and looked at the ground. He found that he could not quite say no to such a request. “Alright. But you will have to deal with him when he realizes he cannot join us on the sea.” “I will,” Hades said with a sad little smile.
