Raea had come to check on him the next morning just like she said. Though Jackson hadn’t been awake at the time he found some more pain killers next to another glass of water on the nightstand and the bedroom door had been left open. Raea must have been making breakfast because he could smell the bacon. She really did love that stuff. A few minutes later she had come in carrying a small tray. After handing it to him, she had settled herself on the end of the bed with her own food.
That was two weeks ago. The first week he had been fairly hostile and irritable towards her. But Rae had ignored it for the most part, only occasionally snapping at him when he was particularly snarly. She kept him company nonetheless and made sure he stayed in bed. She even took time off from work to care for him. The second week had gone better. He began to accept that she wasn’t going to stop and even began to get along more.
It was his third week on “bed rest,” though she now allowed him move to the couch or a chair she had placed out on the porch. His ribs were still sore, but not as much as before, and she figured he had about another week or so before he was fully healed. At the moment, they were sitting on the couch together. Jackson propped up against the arm at one end and Rae leaning back against the other, her legs folded Indian style beneath her. She had turned to face him.
“Let me see if I got this right,” he said, eying her. “You’re Japanese, though you don’t look it. You don’t know who your parents are other than some pictures your remember seeing as a child. Your adopted parents were murdered and you were raised by monks?” He raised a brow at her. She just chuckled and nodded. “Precisely. ” She smiled.
“But monks? That’s a little hard to believe. Why not an orphanage or some sort of foster program?” He inquired.
She shrugged. “I was in an orphanage. Twice. But it was very crowded. The second time I was adopted I ran away. No clue what happened to them by the way. One of the monks from my village was visiting the city. I guess he knew my parents because he recognized me. Said I looked just like my mother but clearly had my father’s spirit. It was pretty funny because I had just been caught by the police. He convinced them to let me go with him, since I wouldn’t tell them anything and they had no way of tracking down my ‘parents.’ At least until they were found.” She rolled her eyes at the word parents.
“What about the records from the orphanage?” He watched her as she merely shrugged again.
“As I said, it was pretty over crowded. And their filing system sucked. The paperwork got lost somewhere along the line.” Her brows furrowed together as she thought. “I think they did find it at one point. I remember the monks whispering one night when they thought I was in bed. They said something about how the police were unable to track them down. Then I got caught for not only being out of bed, but eaves dropping.” He laughed and she just grinned before yawning widely. It was pretty late.
“Why don’t you go to bed?” He asked.
“Don’t wanna….” She mumbled resting her cheek on her knees and looking away from him. That got his suspicions up and he narrowed his eyes.
“Why?” He asked. She didn’t answer him, instead staring up at the small shrine she had built to honor her parents and adopted parents on top of the entertainment center. She had confirmed that’s what it was.
“Rae,” Jackson said, giving her a stern look. He saw her roll her eyes as she gave a loud sigh.
“I don’t sleep very much,” she said.
“That doesn’t answer my question,” He stated. She turned her head to glare at him before looking away again, though not before he noticed a faint blush.
“I have really bad nightmares….” She mumbled again.
“Of?” He asked. He could tell she was getting annoyed with him but he didn’t care. Jackson knew she would answer. He had learned that when she was this tired she wasn’t able to resist things as much so he just waited patiently. After a few minutes he got what he wanted, though it wasn’t what he was expecting.
“Fine,” she snapped. “If you must know I watched my adopted parents’ murders. It happened on my third birthday. We were going to the beach and some nut with a katana who was hopped up on drugs and thought he was a fucking samurai or something showed up. My dad tried to protect us while my mom picked me up and ran. She tried to keep me from seeing but I peeked over her shoulder and watched as the bastard stabbed him. Then he came after us. So my mom put me down and told me to hide and tried to distract him. I saw him slit her throat and then I ran.
“Because I tripped at one point, he missed when he swung and grazed my shoulder. I tried to hide under some fallen trees. But he found me. We must have stumbled into a wolf nursery or something because a large male came out and attacked him. He was so out of his mind he wasn’t able to fight it off. Apparently, I was too small to be considered much of a threat because it just walked off after that. I was found later when people came to look for us. I dream of it almost every night.” Her jaw trembled slightly but she didn’t cry.
As he watched her he began to regret asking. The only thing he could think of to say was. “I’m sorry.” And he really was. That would be a lot for anyone to handle, let alone a small child.
She just looked at him, her eyes empty. “Why?” He didn’t know how to respond to that.
After a few more minutes she stood up. “I’m going to bed.” With that she headed for her room, closing the door behind her. After a while he followed suite, heading to his own room and flipping out the light. He thought about what he had learned as he drifted to sleep. So Wolf wasn’t as invulnerable as everyone believed.
Jackson jerked awake some time later. He glanced at the clock and saw that it was only 4:25 am. With a groan, he tried to get his sleep filled mind to focus on what had woken him. When he tried to sit up he realized that there was a weight on his chest, and something warm was pressed against his left side which caused him to freeze, his body tensing. Looking down he could just barely make out the dark outline of Rae’s body. She was curled up on her side, pressed against him, her left hand clutching his shirt. Her breathing was slow and even so he knew she was asleep. What was she doing in his bed?!
Reaching out he brushed a hand against her cheek finding that it was damp. She had been crying. He quickly realized what probably happened. She must have had a nightmare. Considering that they were apparently bad enough for her to try and stay awake he wasn’t surprised she’d want to go somewhere for comfort. What did surprise him was that she had actually climbed into his bed and was currently sleeping peacefully beside him. Part of him realized that that meant she must trust him on some level. The rest of him was too tired to care.
Thinking of how awkward it might be when she woke up to find herself pressed against him he carefully tried to pull away and put some space between them. But this only served to cause her to whimper and cling to him tighter, snuggling up even more to him, one slim leg slipping around his. He sighed and shook his head. Carefully wrapping his arm around her shoulders he pulled her closer and lay his head back down, closing his eyes. He felt her relax again as she let out a contented sigh and soon both of them were asleep once more. Tomorrow was going to be interesting.
