Chapter Five
The Joker, growing impatient and having received absolutely no sign of
compliance with his demand, immediately set into motion his first
‘demonstration’. Even though there was a reason behind this particular
madness, Joker couldn’t help but take pleasure and enjoy his venture.
Leaning over the side of the roof atop a 50 story building, he admired
the view somewhat. It was nighttime, and all the lights of Gothom were lit.
“Hmmm, look at all the fire flies.” He said as he looked around. “You know
what fireflies hate?” He took out a small device that was in his pocket and
pulled the antenna out. “Loud noises.” Then he punched in a code and within
seconds, several locations, one right after the other went up in a large ball of
orange flame.
The list of buildings that were now destroyed and ablaze were critical in
several ways. The Fire station that was at the heart of Gothom, the new Hospital
that was being built to relieve the over crowding of the other hospitals in
Gothom, A school that was close to the narrows, and a church . . . . just
because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Actually, that church might have
been a service rather then an affront. It was an absolute eye sore.
He laughed as he watched each explosion and the scurrying people below
that jumped and started to run at the sounds and the way the ground shook. It
was absolutely wonderful to his eyes and ears. He looked at the time,
“Tomorrow night will be an even bigger bang!” He said starting to chuckle
but it wasn’t long before it turned into laughter.
Harley was looking around at everything and how dark and dingy it seemed
to be compared to the rest of Gothom. She didn’t quite understand how it got
the name “The Narrows” but it was both disgusting and interesting. She
strolled along as if she was walking through a park on a spring day even though
it seemed very dark in this part of town.
Skipping through a parking structure she slowly came to a stop hearing a
sound that caught her attention. It sounded like a faint cry, and she started to
follow it. Underneath a parked car was a small kitten, who couldn’t have been
more then a few months old. It looked at her with sad eyes, and slowly pawed
it’s way over to her looking up at her cautiously.
Harley frowned as her bottom lip stuck out, and she sat down. The small
kitty slipped into her lap and she began petting it. It was thin, and obviously
very hungry. “Hmm. You’re lost too, aren’t you.” She said reaching into
her pocket and taking out some cheese rounds that she had lifted from a shop she
came across. She unwrapped one and broke it up into smaller pieces feeding it to
the hungry animal. “I’m not sure where I’m going. But I know my puddin’
is out here somewhere.” She said scratching it’s ears as it started to purr
and nuzzle her hand.
“Well . . . what have we here?” A gruff voice said behind her. Harley
turned looking over her shoulder and cocking her head wondering who it was.
“What’s a pretty little thing like you doing down here?”
Then a second man appeared, “It’s dangerous for you to be down here,
ya know sweetheart.” He said with a look of malice in his eyes. Both men were
looking her over now, and Harley just starred at them. Two more men came out and
all four made little comments and cat calls, as they surrounded her.
Harley looked back at the kitty in her lap still petting it. “Don’t
worry.” She whispered with a wink, “I’ll protect you. They won’t hurt
you.” She said carefully removing the small kitten from her lap and scooting
him back underneath the car where she picked him up. Then she moved to stand up
and turned around leaning on the car. Now the men could get a full view of her
figure and the whistles startled to get louder as they approached.
She looked around at the four of them and put her hands on the car behind
her. With one swift move she leapt up onto the roof of the car looking around at
them. “Woh, what a flexible little thing she is.”
The men laughed as one reached out for her. Instantly his hand was kicked
away before she dismounted the car and landed on her feet. The men were not
amused. Now they seemed to feel like she was a threat, but great sport to be
had. Two of the men tried to rush her but she used them as stepping stones to go
over them and end up running as soon as her feet touched the floor. It was a
very tight parking structure and the cars were packed in tight, not leaving very
much room to maneuver.
For a full 15 minutes she managed to avoid getting captured, but
unfortunately, she was very outnumbered. One of the man managed to grab her by
the arm, and then the others quickly surrounded her grabbing her as well. Even
though she struggled, it was no use. The four of them together were to strong
for her to escape from.
However, before any
advantage could be taken of the ‘prize’ they felt they had won, a voice came
loudly with approaching footsteps to match. “QUIT screwing around. I don’t
want to draw any unnecessary attention toward . . .” He stopped as he caught
sight of the young girl that they held in their clutches. Harley’s eyes went
wide, like a scared rabbit caught in the headlights of an on coming car. “Well
. . . this is a surprise.”
Harley started to struggle more now, trying to pull away with everything
in her. But they were still holding her firmly. Her eyes remained on the man who
had just arrived. She knew those eyes and that face, she knew them all to well.
Dr. Crane had been her first and only doctor when she was first imprisoned in
Arkem, and she had spent enough time with him to have his image burned into her
memory.
He smiled as he looked at her, “You seem to be well, and rather . . .
loose, don’t you Jane?” She didn’t answer her eyes were still wide as
could be as she starred at him. “I think we may have some catching up to do,
you and I.”
“The entire city is in an uproar. The only reason they haven’t taken
to the streets with pitchforks and torches is because the Hospital and School
were empty, and the church wasn’t holding a service. The causalities suffered
were bad enough but were minimal compared to what they could have been.”
Commissioner Gordon said as he stood on the roof talking to the Dark Knight who
was now declared an outlaw.
“His blowing up these sites can only mean that he hasn’t found her
yet either, since she escaped.” He answered.
“How can you be sure? What if he does have her back and he’s just
doing this for fun? Getting some sick gratification over watching these places
burn.” The Commissioner asked.
“Simply because up until now they had been robbing museums and banks
for whatever treasure they could find. He’ll make good on any threats he made
inside the perimeters he has set. We’ve seen it before. He attacked these
sites because she wasn’t returned to him as he demanded.” The Batman said.
“So we have a mad man on the loose and a mad woman just as dangerous
but less organized.” He sighed and shook his head rubbing his temples. “I do
not get paid enough for this job.”
Harley’s eyes fluttered open as she found herself starring up at a
ceiling. She started to get up only to find that she was restrained tightly to a
table. Turning and twisting she tried to escape the restraints with no luck.
Then, Dr. Crane came into her view as he stood over her. She frowned and cowered
as far away from him as possible. He was swabbing her arm with alcohol before
pushing a needle into her vein and drawing blood. It was apparently not the
first he’d taken, as her arm was sore to the touch. Any touch much less a
sharp needle.
When he had taken a full vile he walked over to a table to do some tests.
Harley began to tug even more when Crane turned his attention away from her.
”Settle down, Jane.” He said in a somewhat condescending tone, concentrating
on what he was doing. “You know better by now.”
Harley frowned as she stopped struggling and looked up at the ceiling
hitting her head back against the table in frustration. Crane found it quite
humorous as he half smiled and turned around walking towards her. “Still not
talking to me, hmmm?” He said looking down at her. “That’s quite
alright.” He was holding another syringe, this time something was in it. A
blue like substance that seemed a little thick for something being put into a
person’s body. “You never did have anything interesting to say anyway.”
He rested his hand on her thigh moving his fingers slowly up her thigh
from her knee. Crane was looking for a specific spot on the inside of her thigh
and he pressed his fingers against the artery that he had been seeking. This
made Harley shutter with horror that it was Crane that was touching her, but
becoming extremely aroused because she was being touched, she fought to stay
focused yet one was stronger then the other. Usually, it was her lust that won
out.
“You know. I have to say I’m quite pleased to have come across you. I
never expected to see you of all the inmates of my Asylum walking about free.”
He grinned, “You have no idea how incredibly important you are to me. Do
you.” She didn’t answer, as his hand remained on her inner thigh.
He smiled and chuckled seeing her eyes close and her body writhe slightly
rather then struggle. “Seems like you suffer from Nymphomaniac tendencies
worse the ever.” Taking the syringe he plunged the needle into her thigh and
pushed the thick liquid in through the needle. Harley’s eyes opened wide as
she tensed. It stung and was exceedingly painful. The agony was even more
intense then it would be if it were penicillin. When he had injected her with
the fluid, he pulled out the needle and pressed down over the small needle wound
before rubbing it a bit to help disperse the substance faster.
Then he turned and walked away back to his experiments and tests.
Harley’s entire body was still tense as she could feel something that felt
like ice running through her body. Then It was followed by the feeling of
absolute heat, like lava had entered into her blood stream. Although, rather
then being tortured by the feelings, she felt quite aroused by them. The part
that she was having trouble with was the rapid changes. When the feeling
transitioned to such extremes, it nearly left her screaming.
Two dark figures stood far away from each other in the basement parking
structure. There was very little light, besides a flicker of the badly wired
lights. “Strange,” The familiar voice of the Joker said through the
darkness. “You seem to be missing something.”
“We don’t have her. None of us do.” Batman’s low gruff voice
answered. “She escaped from a secure facility yesterday morning. We haven’t
been able to locate her.” The joker arched his brow tucking his chin slightly
as he shook his head.
“Well isn’t that just to bad for you.” He said taking out a
detonator that was in his pocket.
“If she isn’t in our custody we can’t give her back to you. She’s
somewhere in Gothom on the streets.” He said a little more forcefully seeing
the obvious threat. “Anything you may destroy she could very well be near, and
you will have blown her up yourself.”
The Joker smiled gleefully, “Ahh. That’s more like it.” He said
with a sadistic chuckle. “You’re learning how to play.” He started to turn
to walk out but Batman quickly raised his voice, not daring to rush him knowing
that the joker would have booby traps in place all around him.
“I’m sure you know that many of the inmates you and Harley released
during your escape are still at large.” He said.
The Joker paused with a grin, “A better class of people then all the
other drones that walk around Gothom. They make life interesting, don’t you
think?”
“Dr. Crane is among them . . . the ones that haven’t been captured
yet.” He paused a moment as Joker seemed to be waiting to hear why he would
care. “Harley used to be his pet project and he used her as a distraction from
his work.”
The Joker remained in place listening to what Batman had said. There was
no laugh coming from him now. He was dead silent. After a long pause his laugh
returned as he looked over his shoulder, “I’m touched.” He said arching a
brow, “You care about the maniacs and lunatics that roam Gothom . . . if you
were smart and had a brain inside that cowl you wear, you would fear them rather
then waste your concern . . . like the rest of the city.”
“If Crane does have her, who knows what she will be the next time she
turns up. He’s destroyed her memory once . . .” Just then two of the
Joker’s thugs started firing in his general direction, spraying the air with a
blanket of bullets. Instantly ducking out of the way on the run, his attention
was effectively drawn away from the madman.
The Joker laughed hysterically seeing him run and dodge out of the path
of the bullets, before disappearing back into the darkness.
Harley’s eyes opened slowly, feeling very groggy and her body feeling
so tired from head to toe. Her vision was a little fuzzy but they began to clear
a bit at a time. She saw a shadow, then an outline of someone looking down over
her. Closing her eyes a moment trying to make them clear she opened them again
to find a familiar shape starting to take form.
Her eyes began to grow wide as she saw the clumsily stitched burlap face
looking down at her. “Good to see you return to the waking world, Jane.” A
distorted voice said causing chills of terror to go down her spine.
“My . . . my name . . .” She stuttered hardly able to form the words
in her mouth.
“Don’t lie there making noses, Speak Up.” He demanded raising his
voice.
“My name is Harley!!” She blurted out almost shouting it.
The face chuckled as it continued to look at her, “The last time I
checked, it was Jane. Harley is the name of a bike . . . or even a name you
would give to a dog. Of course, I suppose it might be appropriate for you . . .
since you can be a real bitch.” She frowned and pulled against the restraints
that held her wrists so tightly.
“Let me . . . let me go.” She said starting to become even more
panicked at the prospect of being restrained.
“I couldn’t do that. We have so much catching up to do. Don’t
we.” He said reaching up and moving a strand of hair from her face. “Blonde
hmm? I think I prefer your original color much better.”
On the nearby table, he took up a scalpel in his gloved hand that was on
a nearby tray. She frowned starting to move frantically. However, the man in the
mask reached up and jerked a rope that made her restrains so tight her eyes
started to flutter. “Be a good girl. You know things will be a lot faster if
you simply hold still.”
Reaching over and resting his hand on her belly he pressed points here
and there as if searching for something. “You’ve never been a cutter.” He
commented as he continued to poke her with his fingertips. “Either you’ve
developed a new symptom, or you’ve been playing very unhealthy games with
someone. Hmm?” Finally, at a point he pressed just under her ribcage on her
side, he seemed to have found what he was looking for. When he pressed it, she
could feel herself hardly able to breathe, as though she would pass out.
Pressing the sharp blade to her skin he made a deep incision. Much deeper
then anything the Joker had ever made on her body. Then using the knife and his
fingers he traced beside the incision until the end of a small vile seemed to
appear in the wound. With his thumb and forefinger, he took out the small
container, looking at it. “You’re lucky, if whoever your playmate was
managed to break or open this vile during your little extracurricular activates
. . .I would have been most upset.” He looked down at her, “And you would
have been quite dead.”
Harley couldn’t take it anymore, her eyes rolled back and her head fell
to the side, as her body became limp. He chuckled seeing that she had finally
passed out.
Harley was still unconscious, as Crane injected her with a sedative to
make sure she didn’t wake up until he was good and ready for her to. Knowing
her history, he decided it would be the easiest way to transport her.
After he finished changing the bandage on her wound that he had stitched
back up so she wouldn’t bleed to death, he covered her with a blanket wrapping
it around her as he released her arms and legs from the restraints. Three of his
men came in that he called for as he finished wrapping up Harley’s unconscious
body. “Make sure she’s locked up securely, once we arrive at the new place.
I do like to try out my new inventions to test them before putting them into
use. And she is such a good subject for such things.”
They nodded as two of the men started to pick up Crane’s things around
the room packing them away getting them ready to go. The third picked up Harley
and took her out the door first.
Crane chuckled slightly to himself. “This is a pleasant unexpected turn
of events, I must say.”
