“Mary!” Bonnie called out to the maid who had told her of the visitor earlier in the day. The maid quickly came out and curtsied.
“Yes Mistress?” Bonnie stood there with her arms crossed over her chest as she tapped her fingers on her arm. At the door stood Lord Beckett who didn’t look particularly pleased he wasn’t being invited in.
“Is this the visitor who came to call earlier in the day?” Bonnie wanted to know starring directly at Beckett.
“No Mistress . . . well . . . yes mistress . . . but his servant who was carrying an invitation for you with specific orders to give it into your hand.” She said trying to explain her answer.
“Thank you Mary.” Bonnie said dismissing her. The Maid quickly curtsied and left knowing the tension between Beckett and Bonnie had always been rather strained and not wanting to be there.
“I was concerned when I was told that you were unable to have visitors.” Beckett said as soon as he was able to speak.
“So you thought you would be a visitor yourself and so be unable to be received also?” She said with her arms still crossed hating it when he showed up on her doorstep personally. Now more than ever when James wasn’t home.
“Can you really be cross with me for being concerned?” He questioned with a charming smile. Bonnie sighed putting her hand on the door preparing the close it but Beckett quickly stepped forward putting his cane against the door. “You have your end of a deal that you made to uphold. I upheld my end of the bargain . . . its time that you paid your dues.”
“You can’t seriously expect me to have dinner with you tonight. I’m hardly in a condition to do so. I slept late when I hardly intended to, and I’ve barely slept at all since James left.” She said frustrated beyond words.
“It seems a bit of a contradiction in terms that you have slept late yet not slept at all.” Beckett pointed out. “However you gave me your word, as I gave you mine. I saw that James was home before supper so that he could spend his nights with you before his departure, and you now owe a debt that I have every intention of collecting on.”
Bonnie starred at him not liking that glint in his eye that said, “dare me”. She had a stubborn streak in her as well but she wasn’t willing to put James at risk by using it now. “When.” She asked.
“Well now.” He said. “You need only get your wrap and then we shall adjourn back to my home where dinner is being prepared as we speak.”
“Tomorrow would be better.” She said crossing her arms. “I would be better rested, better dressed, and more prepared.”
“You look absolutely lovely as you are, and now will be quite adequate.” He said reaching out and grasping her arm before she had a chance to try and shut the door again. Bonnie frowned as he hurried her down the steps and then the walkway towards his carriage. Mary came hurrying after them carrying Bonnie’s cloak with her.
Thank You, But I’d Like To Go Now
“Did you enjoy the food?” Beckett asked as they walked out onto the Terrace. “I had it specially prepared for you. I understand that many of the dishes were your favorites.” He said in a charming way.
“You’ve been researching me a bit then have you.” She said trying to be polite and gracious but it was difficult. She wasn’t feeling comfortable or at ease at all, and she had prickles down the back of her neck each time he came to close to her.
“Is that not the duty of a good host? To know what his guest likes and sees to it that they have everything they want?” He questioned keeping his charming smile in place. “You do look quite lovely this evening Bonnie. You have a beautiful glow about you. Perhaps the glow is your impending motherhood, shining through.”
Bonnie’s eyes shifted up towards Beckett when he mentioned it. “How do you know of this?” She said a little shocked.
“You’ll find there is very little that escapes me in the Caribbean my dear Bonnie.” He stepped closer to her and looked into her eyes. “How long did you really think you could keep it a secret? Why were you trying to hide it in the first place?” He questioned.
“I didn’t really think it was any of your concern” She said stepping back. “It was between James and myself. Its our business, not yours.”
“Ah I see.” He started to walk towards her again, “Then tell me why it is I can see fear in your eyes right now, hmmm? Why is it that your shivering Bonnie, with the rather warm Caribbean breeze there is no need to tremble so.”
“I should go.” She said quickly turning to run only to have him grasp her shoulders and jerk her back to face him holding her in place as he looked into her eyes. She struggled a bit, but his hands were like vice grips on her arms.
“That child you carry inside you should be mine, and you know it.” Bonnie could hardly believe her ears.
“You never intended to marry me. Your plans were to have your evening of fun, perhaps even two and then to turn me back onto the streets.” She said pushing his hands away from her. “At least James had a mind to make me his wife first and foremost.”
“You believe that he loves you? Is that it?” He said looking at her disapprovingly.
“That would be particularly naive of me wouldn’t it!” She said forcefully. “We were getting along quite well when you decided to send him to sea, and beginning to learn to love each other when he left these shores. I’m told that absence makes the heart grow fonder so perhaps by the time he returns we will no longer have to struggle with what is already been learned.”
Beckett started to laugh and applaud at her speech only annoying Bonnie that much more. “Who are you trying to convince Bonnie? Me, or yourself?” He smirked. “You’ll become lonely locked away in that large house all by yourself. Then where shall you turn for company? Hmmm?”
“Not to you. You may hold your breath and wait until that happens I hope.” She said narrowing her eyes. Beckett gazed at her a moment keeping his small smile.
“You really are stunningly beautiful you know.” After a few more uneasy moments for Bonnie he finally turned his eyes away. “Good evening Madam Norrington. My carriage awaits to return you home.” That was all he said as he disappeared back into his house.
Charity
Bonnie and two of their house servants walked down to the jail carrying baskets with them and walked along the bars giving handfuls of bread and meat to the prisoners. One of the servants followed along giving the prisoners water as they walked doing their best to divide what they had brought along the hungry inmates.
Two soldiers came outside the gates and started to raise a commotion trying to turn them away but Bonnie quickly stepped in and shooed the soldiers away using her name as the Admiral’s wife to outrank them and go on about their charity work to feed the hungry prisoners. The guards didn’t know what to do, and sent a man to find out how to handle the situation.
Mr. Mercer walked into Lord Beckett’s office. “Yes Mercer, what is it?” Beckett asked as he was looking out the window down at the docks as one of their ships unloaded it’s cargo.
“It’s Admiral Norrington’s Misses, Sir. She and several of her maids are standing outside the gates at the bars feeding the prisoners causing quite the ruckus.” Beckett looked at Mercer. “She’s been asked to stop several times but insists to go about her business and says the soldiers should mind their own.”
Cutler sighed, “I could have seen this coming. She was going to start causing trouble as soon as she became bored.” He looked back out the window, “Have the maid’s dispersed and bring Mistress Norrington to me. I’m sure she’s going to have a lot to say about my stopping her charity work.”
“Yes sir.” Mercer said turning on his heel and exiting Beckett’s office to see to the matter personally.
Laying Down Laws
“Let me go you slimly git! Get your hands off me!” Bonnie yelled as Mercer ‘escorted’ her into Beckett’s office and sat her down in a chair rather roughly. Her feet almost didn’t touch the floor the whole way. Beckett didn’t say anything and just watched the scene with his arms crossed. Mercer looked at Cutler who gave a nod, and he bowed slightly before turning and
leaving the two alone.
“Is that really any sort of language for a lady?” Beckett said referring to the terminology she had used for Mercer when she had first burst into his office. “Remember you are of a higher class of person now, and must act in a manner that best suits your station.”
“Letting fellow human beings starve hardly seems like a noble or ‘higher class’ behavior by anyone’s standards.” She said picking up on the underlying meaning of his words.
“There is more then one way to see that prisoners are disciplined, and I can’t incorporate all of them if I am unable to monitor and control every aspect of their care, including their food and water at all times.” Beckett countered instantly.
“That’s just an excuse not to feed your prisoners so you can save money on food!” She shouted. “So what is the harm in me giving bread and water to some of your inmates if it doesn’t cost you anything?” She asked.
“Did you not hear anything I just said?” Beckett said a bit louder. “I realize that you were traumatized by the death of your brother but you cannot assume that every soul in this jail is guilty of as mild a crime as your brother was. I’m sorry for your loss but I cannot allow you to disrupt things here because of your grief!”
“Don’t confuse grief with compassion, Lord Beckett! Of course I would hardly expect you, of all people, to know the difference!” She shouted back at him standing to her feet. “Those men and women are hungry and whatever wrongs they have committed, shouldn’t mean that they should have to loose their freedom as well as suffer from thirst and starvation.”
“That is all well and good when one who is in your position has the luxury of principals, but I am running a business which includes this port, these waters, this fort, and yes it’s prison. All of which incorporates those who inhabit any and all of these areas. Men must be governed and I’m afraid that I can’t be to concerned with how you disapprove of the methods that are used to govern those who don’t wish to obey the law.”
“I am not doing anyone any harm!” Bonnie exclaimed.
“You are to be placed under house arrest until further notice Mrs. Norrington, and will remain there under guard, not leaving the premises without strict express permission from myself and an escort.”
Bonnie was stunned. “You can’t do that!” She protested.
“I’m afraid that I can, and that I have every intention of doing so immediately. Perhaps after you’ve calmed down and have had time to think things through, we may be able to have another discussion about this matter. A more sensible one.” Walking towards the door he called out, “Mr. Mercer!”
Bonnie could hardly believe this, “You can’t place be under arrest! I haven’t done anything wrong! I am the Admiral’s wife and he would vouch for me, he would tell you that I haven’t done anything that I should be arrested for!” Mercer walked in and seemed to know what was going on already.
“Ah yes, but the ‘Admiral’ isn’t here. Which means it is I whom you must deal with and you will learn to do so or you will find yourself being limited to your home quite often and several of your own liberties taken away until you learn how to behave properly.” He waved towards Mr. Mercer. “Mr. Mercer will accompany you back to your home and a guard will be put on your house at all times. You’re not to leave without my say so.”
Bonnie couldn’t believe any of this and started to say something else, but Mercer quickly took her arm and hustled her out of the room again. Beckett picked up a book and smirked to himself until she was gone and the door was closed. He did have a rather strong hold over her while James was gone weather she liked it or not.
Forever it Seems
“Mistress?” A maid said walking quietly towards Bonnie’s bed where she hadn’t moved from in almost two days. “Can I get you anything else?” She questioned. Bonnie didn’t make a move or a sound as she lay still. Another maid held a cool compress to her head and another lay across her neck and chest as they tried to keep her cool.
“Did you send for the doctor Teresa?” The older maid asked as she replaced one of the compresses with a freshly cooled one and put the other in the basin of cool water to begin cooling that one.
“I tried. The guard insisted that he send word to Beckett first to ask permission for the doctor to be sent for.” She sighed as she came closer. “Mary, what is this all about? Why is he keeping her locked up like this?” She asked.
“He’s punishing her.” Mary replied dabbing Bonnie’s skin with a dry cloth to keep her dry and as comfortable as she could.
“Just for us giving the prisoners food? That doesn’t seem right.” Teresa said walking over with another pitcher of water.
“That was just an excuse. He’s punishing her for marrying the Admiral . . . for carrying the Admiral’s baby . . . and for turning him away over and over again. She chose Admiral Norrington over him, and he means to see she pays for it whenever and however he can.”
“Don’t spread . . . . rumors Mary.” Bonnie whispered weakly. It was the first thing she had said in two days.
“I’m sorry mistress. I didn’t mean to gossip.” She apologized quickly leaning closer. “DO you want anything Mistress? To eat or to drink?” She said hoping that perhaps while she was a little conscience she would be able to have some nourishment. However she was only lucid for a moment before it seemed she went back into her feverish state. Mary sighed and went back to trying to keep her cool and comfortable. “Damn that Beckett. He’d better hurry up with a doctor.”
Finally, a doctor did come and went about his work tending to Bonnie. The maids awaited anxiously to hear the news and to have their instructions on how to care for their mistress until she regained her health. When the doctor came out of the room, he had a grave look on his face and the two maids could feel that there was something terribly wrong.
“She’s resting now. I gave her a bit of something to help her sleep. She was a little in shock, and I wager she might fall into some depression when the initial shock of everything is over.”
“She’s lost the baby then?” Mary said having wondered if that was what was happening but afraid for jumping to any conclusions. The doctor nodded with a grim expression on his face.
“Her living conditions simply changed so drastically so quickly, that it was far to soon to have a child. If she were to have waited until a bit later to have started a family . . . perhaps now, or even a bit further along . . .then I imagine it would have been fine. But her body was still adjusting to the changes.” The maids nodded a bit, Mary the older of the two seeming to understand a bit more. “I’ll write to her husband, the post goes out today. She’ll need all the support she can get, she’ll feel very down and quite depressed when she does awake.”
The two nodded and curtsied as the doctor turned and left the house. Mary looked towards the bedchamber and Teresa’s eyes welled up with tears as she started to cry. Mary wrapped an arm around the younger maid and quieted her a little trying to comfort and calm her down a bit.
