comments I am glad that you are enjoying it and sorry for perplexing you with
the timeline…however we do know that Gibbs already knew Jack before he lost the
Pearl and he knew Anna from somewhere….all will become clear, I promise
Chapter Five - Purpose
Anna began to wail a high keening sound that made the Maia
shiver and Nick began to sob, tugging at Maia’s arm
telling her that she had to save the Captain, begging her to save him. She put
a hand on the boys arm, meaning to tell him that she was sorry that it was
beyond her when she became aware of a presence standing over Jack, looking at
her, a shadowy form that was without words ordering her to go after Jack, to
find him, that she needed to take him to the island.
She did not understand, what island, but there was no refusing and she nodded
falling back to her knees, turning to Gibb telling him that she needed to take
Jack to an island, that there was one near, for him to find it, before her
hands wrapped around Jack’s face and she pushed her thoughts out, trying to
find him.
She was a spark, flying through the darkness and she could see what must be
Jack, a fiery flame, glowing red, a shooting star that raced in front of her,
just out of her reach.
“Jack” her scream was whipped away by the blackness and the red glow that was
Jack did not slow.
“help me” she threw the thought out and then the
spirit had her hand and was pulling her along, faster and faster until she
could make out the form of Jack in front of her a bright light.
”Jack, Jack” she shouted again and thought she saw the fire that was him slow,
“Jack come back. You are needed.”
Now he did slow so that she could fly or float or whatever it was that she did
in front of him, insubstantial hands resting against his chest, preventing him
from moving forwards.
“Move aside” his face was resolute, determined there was no laughter in his
eyes and she swallowed.
“You have to come back Jack, there are things that you need to do.”
“I am dead”
“you are not dead Jack, you have left your body but
you are still alive, you can go back, you must go back.”
He grinned then, his earthly self shining through, his hazy spirit form seeming
to get more solid.
“So Star of the Sea how do I get there?”
Maia did not really know but she held out her hand
and he took it, her other hand still held by the spirit was given a sharp tug
and then they were flying.
Jack coughed, and opened his eyes “I just had the strangest dream….” He began
to choke, pain searing through his chest.
“it wasn’t a dream Jack” Anna was holding his hand, her grip crushing his
fingers and he could see Maia on her hands and knees
beside him, she seemed to be gasping for breath and he reached out one hand
towards her as she straightened to look at him.
“land ahoy” Gibb’s shout had her struggling to her
feet, swaying as she shaded her eyes.
“I need you to get us ashore, to build a shelter” the spirit was standing at
her shoulder, telling her what to say and she just repeated the instructions,
not understanding the reasons, concentrating on moving her mouth to form the
words.
“Do as she says” Jack’s voice was a low croak but the authority was there and
the crew began to move.
She sat then, resting, waiting for the boat to be ready, for Jack to be loaded
into it, for it to be gently lowered into the ocean before she stood and
unsteadily climbed down the rope ladder to sit beside him. He was awake, lucid
and in tremendous pain and she rested her hands over the wound, ignoring the blood
that still bubbled, concentrating on trying to stop the bleeding, to reduce the
pain, doing things that she thought were impossible with wounds like this, but
that spirit was still with her and she felt the energy flowing from him,
through her, to Jack.
The boat scraped over the sand and Anna Maria leapt out, followed by Gibb, the
rest of the crew rushing to build a shelter, up above the high tide line. Gibb
and Anna gently lifting Jack from the boat, laying him on the makeshift
stretcher, talking to him, entreating him to stay with them and all Maia could do was sit on the sand, willing herself to keep
going, knowing that there was much yet that she was required to do and she did
not know if she could.
“Maia” Anna Maria was touching her shoulder, her eyes
red “it is ready, he is there”
She had not noticed that they had placed Jack in the shade or that they stood
looking at her waiting for her to do something.
“Right thank you” she hesitated not knowing what she was supposed to do next
then the words came to her “you have to leave now, I am sorry. You must stay
away for a week, then in the evening of the seventh day send the longboat.” She
hesitated then “I will do my best.”
They did not want to leave her alone with him and they argued and it was finally
Anna Maria who shouted at them that while they were fighting Jack was dying. He
would be dead already if it had not been for Maia so
they had to trust her. There was silence then and they quickly left, rowing
away with many backwards glances, expressions becoming fearful as thick fog
descended over the island so that she could see them no longer and it was just
her and Jack, alone.
