Chapter 5: Fool for Love
In a crude brig, somewhere in the depths of a large stone building not far from shore in Porto Sant'Anna, Will Turner sat, darkly brooding.
His unfortunate capture - while he just happened to be manning the ropes on a pirate ship - had led to other, more serious problems. Some of which he'd learned about from the other prisoners.
Less than a month after he and Elizabeth married, they were scratching to meet their weekly expenses. Blacksmiths lived a simple life, and Will rejected all of Elizabeth's suggestions to supplement their income, which included borrowing from her father (he'd rather be hanged) and questionably legal smuggling (which he considered).
Until one particular opportunity came along, that seemed simple enough: crew on a merchant vessel headed from Port Royal to Cuba and back. It paid decently, and since the pirate threat made sailing more dangerous, he had been promised an added bonus for taking a shortcut through a notoriously pirated cove.
Brash and confident, he accepted. Which would have been fine, except they were, in fact, attacked by pirates, and the crew taken prisoner. Their cargo was stolen. But Will's crew had not given up without a fight. The pirate ship, a large one, had been left short-handed. Will seized the opportunity to negotiate, offering to aid the crew in exchange for safe passage to the nearest port. It had almost worked.
Almost. Because the pirate vessel was attacked by the Royal Navy only two days after Will had begun to aid the crew. The rest of Will's former shipmates were released, as they were locked up in the brig of the ship. But Will had been arrested along with the rest of the pirate crew. It might take days, weeks, to straighten the mess out. Meanwhile, here he rotted in Porto Sant'Anna.
He missed Elizabeth. He closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against the cold iron grate, willing himself to be strong.
Images flashed across his mind, making him smile. Elizabeth laughing, her hair blowing out behind her, glinting in the sunshine. Elizabeth's eyes, filled with tears, as she went up on tiptoe to kiss him, on their wedding day. Elizabeth's mouth, lips shaped into a round O, when he slid inside her for the first time. The sweet smell of her skin and neck and hair. He wondered what she was doing at this very moment.
Sweat popped out on his brow. He had to get out of there, and fast. Or he'd go mad. Just like Jack Sparrow.
His lips curled back in a sneer, he felt the sudden urge to rattle the grate.

The candle on the table had almost burned out. Jack lay, half naked, on the bunk next to Elizabeth, who was still completely naked, but had the sheet pulled up to cover her breasts. She and Jack had not exchanged a word since she'd lost their wager. She stared at the ceiling of the cabin, wondering what would happen next. She felt his eyes boring into the side of her face, but could not bring herself to meet them.
She needed air.
Jack, let me up. I want to dress, she said, still not looking at him.
Dress? What for?
I want to get some air.
Not yet, love.
What?
I said, not yet. He rolled partially on top of her, lifting his head so he could look directly into her face. She turned away, but he grasped her pointy chin with his thumb and forefinger and turned her to look at him. There's no need to be shy.
At that, Elizabeth snorted. Clearly you've no sense of decency. Yes, I know. Pirate.
Having his ready response robbed from him, he frowned and scanned her face. What's the matter?
The matter is, I'm married, Elizabeth said, giving him a mighty shove so that his weight was no longer resting on her. She sat up, craning her neck and leaning her head back to stretch.
Ah, guilt... rears its ugly head, Jack said ruefully. At her offended look, he added, Notwithstanding, however, we have an agreement.
Stuff your agreement. I'm ending this charade before it goes any farther. She threw the sheet back and attempted to climb out, but he blocked her with his chest, wrapping his arms around her.
I can't let you do that, love.
What do you mean? Let me go. She struggled, only to realize his arms were as strong as steel bands around her. And then she saw the way he was looking at her.
In the dim candlelight, his eyes were black as iron, pupils lit with an unearthly, almost menacing glow. The planes of his bronzed face were taut, his brows knitted, his mouth a hard, firm line. This was a man who meant business. And yet, he was so handsome, at that moment, that she struggled to breathe. Either that, or he was squeezing her too hard.
I need to explain something to you, Elizabeth, so listen well. This is not a game. I'm done playing. I have wanted you . . . he sighed, and brought a hand up to her face to smooth hair away, as he searched for words. I have wanted you for too long. Now, you're here. In my cabin. Naked. Warm and moist and everything a man could dream of. And you're asking me to let you leave, dress, go walk on the deck and clear your head so you can come back in here and tell me to go to the devil.
I could tell you to go to the devil right now.
Elizabeth, please. His arms were still tight, but his voice was soft, cajoling. I'm not a man who begs. But you... you're destroying me. At this she felt the first stirrings of sympathy, fought the urge to comfort him as he pleaded. I wake up thinking about you. I go to sleep thinking about you. I dream about you, for God's sake. His mouth was a breath away, now, as he tilted his head closer. I have to have you. I have to have you. I'll do anything.
Anything? Elizabeth prodded, her voice unsteady. Jack nodded, slowly, still meeting her eyes. I could ask you for anything at all: your ship, money, promises... and you'd hand them over? For a night's pleasure?
Yes, he whispered. I'm not proud of it. But there it is.
She pulled back to stare blankly at him, shaken by the depths of his passion.
So what's it going to be, love? What's the price? I wish I could say knowing every woman has her price was distasteful enough to put me off you, but it's not. Whatever you want. But decide quickly, because I can't wait any more.
Jack, she sighed, and lifted her lips to his. He seized them roughly, slanting his mouth over hers in a hard, demanding kiss.
