John chokes and gasps for air as dust and dirt fills the room, covering his face the best he can to try and filter some of the gunk out. After several minutes, the air clears enough for him to be able to breathe normally and he gets to his feet. He looks around and sees thirty-four moving mounds of dirt and grime and thirty-four pairs of big shining eyes staring up at him, the pelts that had been covering them doing no good against the dust.
“Hi,” he says in his friendliest voice.
His only response is a whimper, followed by another and then another. The whimpering becomes sniffling and in very short order crying. Before John knows what’s happening, he’s surrounded by thirty-four bawling children.
“Um, I’ll be right back,” John states, nearly panicked.
Quantico prepared him for many things that he might encounter in the field. This wasn’t one of them.
He turns to go and is stopped by a small body attaching itself to his leg. He looks down, stunned and unsure what to do with this small person that is so desperately clinging to him as it cries its eyes out. Before he knows what’s happening, several more little hands start grabbing him. At first he doesn’t really mind the little fingers holding onto him, he understands that these kids are afraid and don’t want to be left alone. However, when those tiny hands start grabbing him in a rather sensitive area below the belt, he starts dancing around trying to dodge those grasping digits while also trying to avoid stepping on any little toes.
“HELLBOY!” John yells at the top of his lungs. “ABE! SOMEBODY!”
Stay calm, John, Abe’s voice fills the agent’s head. We’ll be there in a few minutes. The sun is about to come up and several of the trolls are trying to get back into the caves.
“Well, can you hurry please!?” John shouts back.
I can’t make the Earth spin any faster, John, Abe patiently explains. You’re just going to have to hold on.
“‘Hold on,’ he says,” John mutters. “Great.”
John looks down at the little bodies that are climbing over each other, desperate to touch him. Considering that his experience with children is zip, he’s not sure what to do. He continues to almost blindly stare at the chaos around him until he notices the littlest one is getting stepped on by the others. He gently disengages himself from some of the kids and picks up this tiny child in his arms.
The baby is scraped and bruised, but other than that John can’t detect any other problems with the child. As he shifts the kid around in his arms, it wraps its chubby little arms around the agent’s neck and snuggles into him, the bawling quickly reducing to mere sniffling. For a moment he can see why people want kids. That is until one of them grabs him in the crotch again causing him to yelp in pain.
After what seems to be an eternity later, John can hear voices approaching the cave. He attempts to get closer to the entrance, but with several children attached to each leg, it proves to be impossible. The first of the other agents arrives and stops dead at the sight in front of him.
“Someone get me a camera, I’ve got to get a shot of this,” the agent laughs.
“You do and I swear I’ll make you clean out the litter pans in Hellboy’s room for a month,” John growls.
Another agent sticks his head around the corner and bursts out laughing. Abe finally makes his appearance and is brought up short by the vision that greets his eyes.
“Oh, my,” is all the merman can say, his lips twitching as he tries not to laugh. “Are you alright, John?”
“Peachy,” John snarls through clenched teeth. “Where’s Hellboy?”
“I imagine he’s in the main cavern with Liz,” Abe answers. “It seems there was an explosion. It caused a cave-in.”
“That would explain the dust instead of fire filling the air and the earth shaking ‘BOOM’,” John replies rather testily. “Any idea what caused the explosion?”
“Some incendiary device detonated by Liz’s fire, I imagine,” Abe responds.
“No, really?” John snaps back. “And here I though Liz had developed a new power.”
“No need to be so testy about it,” Abe reprimands gently.
“I’ve got kids attached to my short hairs,” John growls back. “Now could someone please come and get some of these kids off of me?”
Still chuckling, the rest of the agents come in and start pulling children off of John. But even after the agents have pulled most of the children off of the young man, there are still several kids clinging to him. Abe views the problem critically before making his decision.
“We need to get these kids out of here and down to the camp,” Abe announces. “We have maybe an hour of sunlight. Are there any jackets for the kids?”
“All I’ve seen in here are these pelts they were sleeping on,” John answers. “I haven’t seen any extra clothing or anything.”
“Fine, cover as many as you can with the pelts and get them down the hill quickly,” Abe orders. “Once at camp, I want some of you to go into town and get food and diapers for them. Also, I want someone to contact the local government officials. They know we’re up here and should be able to send help.”
As John and the other agents start to gather up the pelts and kids, Abe turns his attention to the cave-in. He waves a hand over the debris, quickly finding the cause of the explosion. Before he can decide on the best course of action, the wall of rubble in front of him shakes as if being struck by something large and heavy.
In what little light there is, Hellboy is able to see that the opening has been completely obliterated. He puts Liz down a little ways off and as close to the biggest pile of burning furniture as he can. He then returns to the former entrance to the cave and starts to dig.
It doesn’t take him long to get rid of the loose rocks before he gets to the solidly packed area. After making sure that Liz is safely out of harms way, he pulls back his right arm and lets loose. He slams his Right Hand of Doom into the obstruction before him several times before a voice stops him.
Hellboy, stop! Abe’s voice commands in Hellboy’s head. The rock here is not stable. You could cause the rest of the cave to collapse if you continue.
“Great,” Hellboy grumbles. “Just great. So what am I supposed to do now?”
Be patient, Abe replies. I’ll figure something out.
“Peachy,” Hellboy snarls at the dirt and rocks in his way as his tail slashes through the air.
Is Liz alright? Abe asks.
“Yeah, but she’s out cold again,” Hellboy answers.
Good, Abe responds. Keep her safe. We’ll try and get the two of you out of there as soon as possible.
“Great,” Hellboy grumbles.
Instead of ignoring Abe and pounding on the cave-in, he turns back towards Liz who’s still laying unconscious part way across the cavern. The fire she’s next to is quickly dying so he starts to try and find things to add to the flames with the help of his lighter. After searching the main cavern and the smaller sleeping cavern, all he can come up with are a few smelly pelts that the trolls were sleeping on. At least that’s what he hopes they were using them for.
He wraps Liz up in the pelts and then sits down beside her. He sits quietly watching her face while the flames consume the last of the wood before collapsing and becoming just glowing embers. He’s not sure how much time has passed, but by the time Liz begins to stir, there are only a few embers left and most of the heat from the fire is gone.
“Hey, beautiful,” he whispers.
“Red, where are we?” she croaks.
“We’re in the main cavern of the troll caves,” he answers.
“What’s that smell?” she asks.
“Well, it’s either the pelts you’re wrapped up in or me,” he replies. “It’s been a while since I’ve bathed, but I’m hoping it’s the pelts.”
“It’s the pelts,” she states after sniffing the aforementioned items.
“Good, because if I ever smell that bad, I should be buried,” he jokes as she starts to squirm around, trying to get out of the bundle he’s made her into and he rests his normal hand on her. “Stay put.”
“Why?” she demands.
“Because this place is cold and it’s only going to get colder,” he explains as he tucks the pelts more snuggly around her.
“Aren’t you cold?” she inquires as she tries to twist around and look up at him.
“Nah, I’m fine,” he lies as a cold shiver runs up his spine.
“Liar,” she shoots back. “I know I’ve got your duster. Why don’t you take it back and I’ll use the pelts to stay warm.”
“No, you need it more than I do,” he responds with an exasperated growl.
“Damn it, Red, stop with all this macho bullshit and just take the damn duster back,” she snaps at him as she struggles even more to get free.
“I said I’m fine and I mean it,” he snarls back as he tries to grab her and force her back down.
Instead of answering, she simply fights harder to escape her cocoon. There’s a brief struggle between them and it ends quickly with him pinning her to the ground with his body. With a hiss of surprise at being so easily subdued, a cold fear grips her belly as she realizes that she’s completely powerless against him and her body starts to shake with that fear.
The voice in his head practically howls with glee as he holds her down with just his weight. He can feel her body shivering underneath him and he knows it has nothing to do with the cold.
Take her, Anung un Rama hisses in his mind. Nothing can stop you. Take her. She’s yours. You know you want to.
“NO!” Hellboy bellows as he launches himself off of the floor and across the room, blindly stumbling over the debris.
It takes several moments for her to realize that he’s no longer on top of her. As she gets her body under control and her heart slowed down, she can hear him clumsily staggering around the room. She struggles to sit up and by the time she does, she can hear him all the way across the cave muttering to himself.
“No, I won’t,” he mumbles, shaking his head hoping to dislodge the voice that’s haunting him.
You want her, Anung un Rama whispers to him. Take her. There’s nothing stopping you.
“I can’t,” he cries to no one.
“Red?” a soft voice calls from just behind him.
He nearly jumps out of his skin as he quickly spins around to face her. She stands there with his duster on and a pelt over her shoulders. She has one arm uncovered and engulfed in blue flames as she looks at him worriedly.
“You’re right to be afraid of me,” he chokes out as he turns back to the darkness.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she replies in confusion.
“But you told Abe that you were afraid of me,” he insists, looking back over his shoulder.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she tells him with an embarrassed smile as she waves the hand not on fire towards him. “I’m afraid of that.”
It takes him a moment to realize what she’s waving towards and he turns towards her with a smile tugging at his lips.
“You’re afraid of my…uh,” he starts.
“Man thing,” she mutters.
“Man thing?” he laughs loudly, the sound echoing off of the walls of the cave.
“Well, what would you call it?” she demands, putting her free hand on her hip.
“My penis, cock, dick,” he begins, chuckling the whole time. “A one eyed wonder snake, love missile…Big Red.”
She starts laughing so hard that she accidentally catches the pelt on fire. He grabs it, throws it to the ground and stomps out the flames. After shaking the dirt and dust out of the fur, he wraps it back around her shoulders, using it as a way to pull her towards him. Not wanting to catch anything else on fire, she douses her flame, instantly plunging them into complete darkness.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers in her ear as Anung un Rama bellows with rage. “I never meant to upset you. I still want to make love to you, but I’ll wait until you’re ready and I’ll try not to push you. I’m not the most patient man in the world you know. But for you, I will be.”
“Thank you,” she whispers back.
He can feel her cheek slide against his until her lips find the corner of his mouth. She gently kisses him and he gladly returns the sign of affection. Her arms slip around his waist as he pulls her closer and the kiss deepens. He can feel his pants getting way to tight and he begins to wonder what he can get away with.
Then an explosion rocks the room and nearly sends them to their knees. They look around trying to find the source of the noise when a spotlight is shined into their eyes. They both throw up an arm to protect their eyes from the intense light when a familiar voice fills the room.
“Liz? Hellboy?” Abe calls into the cavern. “Are you two alright?”
“We’re fine, Abe,” Liz yells back.
“Would have been even better if you’d given us a bit more time,” Hellboy mutters under his breath.
“We can always come back later if you two like,” Abe chuckles.
“No, that’s alright,” Liz responds as she elbows Hellboy in the gut.
Pulling the pelt even tighter around her, she starts to walk towards the light. Grumbling, Hellboy follows her until they reach the other side of the cave. They look up to see a fair sized hole in the ceiling just above the cave-in.
Picking her way carefully among the fresh rubble on the ground she stands just under the hole wondering how she’s going to get up there. Suddenly, she feels Hellboy’s hands on her waist and a second later her feet leave the floor. She reaches her arms up and a moment later several pairs of hands are helping her through the hole into the cold night air.
John hands her a pack and then starts helping her down the side of the mountain until they get to the main entrance to the caves. He shows her to what used to be the nursery and leaves her with the lantern he had been carrying. With a shy smile, he turns and leaves the caves and stands guard outside the main entrance.
She looks inside the pack he gave her and immediately understands why. After she gladly sheds the pelt, but more reluctantly takes off the duster, she finally pulls her clothes out of the pack and gets dressed. By the time she’s dressed and bundled up in her own clothes, Hellboy is waiting for her.
“Thanks,” she says as she hands back his duster.
“Any time,” he replies, his amber eyes boring into her.
With a shy smile, she ducks her head and then slips under his left arm. He nearly purrs with happiness as they start to make their way down the hill, Abe following up behind them. Hellboy ignores the growls and hisses from Anung un Rama as he paces like a caged animal in the back of Hellboy’s mind.
“So, Abe, what happened to the kids?” Hellboy asks over his shoulder.
“They’re back at camp now,” Abe answers easily catching up to the couple. “I sent some of the agents down into town to get supplies, but that’s going to take some time. It’s a three hour drive just to get down off of the mountain.”
“What about food?” Liz inquires.
“The goats that didn’t die of shock or from the cave partially collapsing on them have been moved down there as well,” Abe replies. “The trick now is milking them.”
“God, that must have been something else marching those little buggers down the mountain,” Hellboy muses with a smirk as he starts to rummage through his duster for a cigar. “The kids, I mean.”
“Actually, since they don’t have any shoes, making them walk in the snow was not feasible,” Abe responds as Hellboy sticks a partially finished cigar in his mouth. “Instead, we put them on the pelts they were sleeping on and dragged them down the mountain. They quite enjoyed it if the laughter was anything to go by.”
At this point they pass a stone that looks incredibly like the bare backside of a troll with its head stuck in the snow.
“Wonder what the story behind that guy is,” Hellboy wonders.
“That was the last troll to come out of the caves,” Abe tells him. “He came running out of the caves with his head on fire. He stuck his head in the snow bank and never noticed the sun come up.”
“Oh, yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask you why you had a hold of that troll’s nose,” Hellboy chuckles, but he stops when he sees the look on Liz’s face.
“He tried to rape me,” she answers quietly.
Hellboy stops dead in his tracks as he digests this news. He steps away from Liz and Abe and walks up to the stone troll. Raising his right hand high up in the air, he brings it down with all of his might, shattering the troll into about a million pieces with a boom that echoes down the mountain. For the first time in some while, Anung un Rama is silent.
