As summer gradually turned into autumn, days seemed to begin dragging by. Warren let most of it pass him as usual. He did however begin to notice a pattern. It aggravated him to no end at first though as weeks passed, he found himself actually growing used to it and sometimes anticipating out of disgust or faint hope.
Monday after lunch, he would find the spot of the lawn near the edge was claimed by Crystal. It was a grudging truce that came easier each time since she was silent enough and he often forgot she was even there unless she should ask him a question on an assignment. Once in a while Gavin would drop by though he was just as quiet a presence as his friend and they would work on various things while letting Warren read.
Tuesday after school, he could find the two on the lawn while the rest rushed for the busses. Normally they were doing homework or Crystal was talking while Gavin was drawing. In truth the mute Sidekick was a great artist from what glimpses Warren had seen in passing. Neither ever got on a bus before his lifted off though.
Wednesday after lunch, he would find both of them in the same spot as on Monday. Usually though Crystal would be sprawled on the grass near the edge looking down through the clouds doing nothing. Gavin would look up at him then go back to a comic book he would almost always have with him. Neither would bother him.
Thursday neither would be found anywhere outside before school, after lunch or after school. It was odd, certainly. Of course they would turn up in class but otherwise they were gone. Every other Thursday however he would see Gavin hanging around with a few Sidekicks in some sort of practice group as they tested their powers no doubt. And a group could stand up to bullies as well.
Friday after lunch, Crystal would be in what was fast becoming "their spot" sleeping with headphones on. Gavin stayed on the steps until the bell rang then he would search her out and wake her up for afternoon classes. After school, he would catch glimpses of Gavin but never Crystal. Still, it was a routine by his standards and he could get along well enough with that.
One of the things he found increasingly odd was his growing...anticipation of the quiet feeling he got when the three were in "their spot" after lunch. It was odd and rather unwelcome. Somehow it made tolerating class with Freon in the mornings seem a lot easier however. He simply ignored her completely which drove her madder than a hornet. That made it worse for the afternoon classes but he took the good with the bad.

Pressure was beginning to build toward October. The senior class was scheduled for gym and Save the Citizen every day of the week two hours after lunch. Naturally, both Heroes and Sidekicks were expected to play the game. Since it was their last year, Principle Powers and the staff were evaluating the way students played and how they adapted to their partners. Graduation meant Heroes would be assigned the Sidekick that best complimented them so the studies and tests were necessary.
Everyone was paired off with another class member each time. Mostly it was a Sidekick but once in a while it was a Hero, just to see how two of them could work in a team. More often than not, he could not get along with the one he was partnered with no matter what side he was placed on. Sometimes he won, other times he lost because of it. To him it was a waste of time. He had no desire to have a Sidekick let alone any other type of partner.
Something occurred to him though as he was watching a match that Monday. He had not seen Crystal in the gym during a single match. Yes, he had seen the scores posted for seniors only. Her name and scores were there though he could not remember seeing her ever participate. Freon, yes, he had seen. In fact, unless a miracle happened, he was going to be her partner on Halloween.

"Gavin."
The boy looked up as Warren came around the corner to their spot. He blinked then spread his hands away from the book resting on his lap. It was a sign used enough for him to know Gavin was asking what he wanted.
"Where's the other annoyance?"
Blinking, the boy seemed surprised. Reaching down, he tugged his pack over to remove a bit of paper and a pen to scribble a note. When finished, he handed it to Warren to read.
She's sick. She apparently caught that bug that's caught the others. Try the nurse's office.
Raising one brow, Warren had to think. He was unaware that there was any sort of bug going around. It was barely even fall for goodness sake. Tossing the paper back to Gavin he nodded and turned away to head into the school. About halfway to the nurse's office, he realized where he was headed and stopped. Why should he care? She was just a girl, one that had invaded his space along with her friend. An annoyance.
He also did kind of like her. She annoyed him at first but she did not bother him either like Stronghold's gang had. That and she never pushed herself or any friendship off on him. Maybe it was just a mutual thing. Shrugging at himself, he finally continued on. He would check to see how she was and then just mind his own business. Not like he was asking her on a date. Hell, he learned his lesson.
Even before he got close to the door he caught the disgusting odor of fresh vomit. Swallowing hard lest he gag and add to it, he set his jaw and pushed the door open. The smell was worse inside. A few moans were coming from the side-door where various cots were should more than one student be in need of attention. He heard Nurse Spex's voice from the other door though and stepped further into the room to just listen.
"...sure you're all right, dear?"
Crystal's voice came through rather clear. "Yes, the dizziness is gone."
"Good. Now, sit up carefully and let's see."
There was some crinkling of paper and rustling. He heard a low "Ah" come and guessed the nurse was looking down Crystal's throat.
"Well, I don't really see any inflammation there. Just sit up straight and let's have another look at that stomach."
More rustles, Warren drew a little closer to the door.
"Well, it looks as if your stomach is a lot more settled. And I don't see any hints of bruising."
Bruising? He frowned. Gavin had said she was sick, not hurt.
"I heal fast, ma'am."
"Oh, none of that. You're one lucky young lady. If that little tumble hadn't made you ill, that chicken you ate at lunch would have made you sick if it stayed much longer inside."
"Sick?"
"Yes. Unfortunately it appears the kitchen got some bad meat. Most of those who took the chicken salad are in the other room waiting for a ride home. Nothing serious, just enough to give them one day to spend sick at home."
Hearing the paper crinkle again and footsteps, Warren stepped back as if he had just come in. A moment later, Crystal and the elderly nurse stepped into the room. Crystal did not have her glasses on. Oddly, it made her seem...very different. Enough to give Warren cause to stare longer than he should have. It stopped when she looked at him.
"Oh dear, Warren Peace. Don't tell me you got caught too," Nurse Spex exclaimed.
"Maybe...just a little..." He had to have some excuse, right?
