“You look tired today Kayla,” Kul’vir noted as they
walked to the hall.
“I sleep very little lately,” she sighed. He looked
down at the odd sticks in her hands then back at her.
“Do you miss your Earth?”
“Sometimes,” she admitted.
“You do understand you can never go back without
proper armor. The sun will severely burn your body.”
Kayla never thought of that. “I really like it here
but it have to be more to fighting.”
“Yes, we are going on a hunt soon,” Kul’vir chirped.
“We will be going to a planet filled with hard meats.”
“I can’t wait.”
“Liar,” he chuckled opening the doors. The first
person she noticed was Maha'vin. He looked at her at the same time.
“Uncle, I thought you were taking a day off?” Kul’vir
greeted.
“That’s not until tomorrow.” He looked over at Kayla
who started to walk away.
Kul’vir noticed she was going into another training
room. “Kayla you know the honored class is fighting in there today.”
Usually that’s where anyone was allowed to go if they
wanted a good one on one fight. She didn’t care where she went she just wanted
to get away from Maha'vin. “I know, I was just going
to watch.”
“If you go in there, you go in to fight,” Maha'vin
roared at her. Others stopped what they were doing and looked at Kayla.
She was so angry that the words came out before she
could take them back. “Fine I will go fight then.” Others started to whisper.
She watched Kul’vir shake his head in disbelief.
Maha'vin angrily walked over to her and grabbed her
arm, making Kayla wince in pain. He practically drugged her to the other room
as he talked in a low angry tone to her. “You want to go kill yourself because
you are angry with me then fine. See if I care, but you will learn to fight
with your heart and not your ooman emotions.” He pushed her into the room and
closed the door. He didn’t bother to see if she got up from the nasty fall.
Kayla looked up at the large snickering Yautja’s. They
watched her get up slowly and brush off her knees. Maha'vin opened the door and
tossed her sticks in her direction making the snickers turn into a loud
laughter.
“Pick up your little sticks,” One of the large males
chuckled as he walked away. Kayla was still stunned from the fall. She bent
down and picked up her sticks and looked at the others that were still watching
her. They were just as large as Maha'vin. A few were even larger.
“Next fight,” Someone roared. Two men went to the mat
to fight. Kayla joined the others in watching the two warriors fight each
other. They fought as though they hated one another. They hissed, snarled and
called one another names. One male playfully hit Kayla on the shoulder
practically knocking her over, nodding his approval of the fight. It was
finally over when one of the men dislocated his jaw.
Maha'vin watched the door open and his heart started
to race. He quickly calmed down as he watched one of the men walk the honored
warrior with the dislocated jaw to the medical lab. “Your pulse started to race
when that door opened,” Yo’jit noted as they watched the young blooded spar
with one another. “Just go get her Maha'vin.” He let out a low growl in Yo’jit’s direction. “She has a hard head just like you. She
will not come out until she hurts herself.”
“Mind your business.”
“Keep up that attitude and she will be my business,”
he warned as he walked away. Maha'vin made a mental note too add Yo’jit to the
list of Yautja’s he wanted to kill.
“Next fight!” the arbitrator roared. It was the third
fight Kayla watched. The younger ones never fought each other with as much
anger as these men fought with. The only person she fought like that was
Maha'vin.
Someone stepped to the mat and looked at Kayla. “Come
fight Kayla,” he teased. “Show me what those little sticks can do.”
Kayla knew there was no need to try to lie her way out of the situation. The one thing she learned
is the men on the ship senses surpassed those of the females. “Oh I was just
angry with Maha'vin so I came in here,” she stammered. “I don’t want to fight.
I just want to watch.”
“She’s afraid,” Someone laughed. “Her ooman ways are
showing.”
“Come show me how angry you are,” The Yautja on the
mat beckoned as he tossed his combistick back and
forth in his hand. He tossed his combistick to one of
the spectators who fought earlier. “I just made it easy for you.” She walked
closer to him as he continued his heckling. “Do you wish to call me Maha'vin to
get your aggression going?”
Kayla tilted her head to the side as she spun her
sticks in her hand. “Ok Maha'vin,” she smiled. He charged at her but she
quickly avoided his blow. She pictured Maha'vin and her anger grew. She slapped
the skilled warrior with her stick causing him to roar at her. Kayla laughed.
“You really want me to pretend you are Maha'vin?”
She jumped on a table to avoid his punch. When she
jumped off she quickly kicked him in the knee causing him to fall. “You picked
the wrong name.” He tried to hit her but she avoided every blow as she thought
about the day Maha'vin marked her skin with a laugh. She hoped back quickly as
he tried to hit her with a powerful blow. “Hit me,” she yelled at him, and he
did just that.
He punched her in the stomach knocking the wind from
her.
Kayla flew half way across the room. She would have
gone further if the wall wasn’t there to stop her. Kayla recovered quickly.
Instead of attacking her again he just stood there. He turned his back to her
thinking the fight was over. Wrong move, she laughed to herself as she
spit out the pool of blood that formed in her mouth from the blow. Kayla ran
towards him as fast as she could. When he turned Kayla didn’t give him any time
to react. She thought of Maha'vin’s laugh when she kicked the warrior in the
throat. She took her sticks and got behind the wounded man. Kayla started to
choke him with her sticks. “What’s your name!”
“Aa’rth,” he tried to say
but she tightened her grip.
“Wrong name! What is your name?”
“He better say Maha’vin before she kills him,” someone
joked making the others laugh.
“Maha'vin,” he choked. She let him go and sat back on
the mat completely exhausted. Thanks to her anger for the Yautja who pushed her
in there, she survived. Kayla could barely move. She wanted to get up and walk
out the room with them admiring her skills but her body wouldn’t move. When she
went to move her right arm she let out a loud moan. Aa’rth
got up and bowed to her before helping her up.
“You’re not angry?” She asked innocently.
He trilled at her softly. Aa’rth
slowly took her injured arm and before she could yell he popped it back in
place. “Today you will eat with us.” Kayla walked out the room with the others.
“Our kill word is hard meats,” Aa’rth joked. “Kayla’s
kill word is Maha'vin.” Every laughed except Maha'vin.
For a few days Kayla didn’t see Maha'vin in the
sparring hall. After practice when she
went to her quarters Maha'vin was inside waiting for her. “How did you get in
here?”
“Never mind how,” he tilted his had to the side and
let out a soft laugh. “You are breathing hard ooman. Are you happy to see me or
was it a strenuous battle today?”
‘Never mind my breathing,” Kayla shot back. He growled
as she walked by. She growled back as she narrowed her eyes at him. Maha'vin
laughed.
“Go shower and get dressed in something other than
sparring wear. You are going on a trip with me.”
“Alone?” she question. Oh god this is it. He’s
going to push me out into space or kill me on some unknown planet, she
panicked.
“No harm will come to you,” he sighed. He left the
room so she could change clothes. Kayla dressed in the soft material that
accented her body. It reminded her of a thin gauze
that you wrapped starting at the breast and ending mid thigh. She slipped into
the lime green cloak Maha'vin left on her bed. When she opened her door he too
had on the same cloak but she couldn’t tell what was underneath.
“You actually look like a female,” he mumbled as he
turned away. Kayla smiled because that was the first compliment he had ever
given her.
She hadn’t been on the transport ship since she first
arrived. She was about to sit where she sat before but he instructed her to sit
up front with him. Kayla watched as he pressed buttons in sequence and the ship
started to move. She smiled as she watched the stars around them. “What is
wrong with you?” He questioned. Maha’vin noticed her teeth were showing for far
too long.
“It’s called being happy,” she answered in a sarcastic
tone. “Something I’m sure you don’t know about.”
“Sure I do. Happiness is collecting the heads of five
hard meats and five oomans in one day.” Kayla shook
her head in disbelief as he laughed. He continued in a softer tone. “Happiness
is going on a hunt with my family and we all make it home safe. Happiness is
proving to you I’m not the monster you make me out to be.”
“I never called you a monster.”
“I’m the center of your anger,” he reminded her. “A
monster is the center of my anger. I am your monster.” Kayla folded her arms
and remained quiet for the rest of the trip. Kayla noticed they were
approaching another ship. It wasn’t as large as the one she lived on but it was
a nice size. When they stood Maha'vin placed her hood over her hair. “It
customary to only show your clan marks when greeted,” he explained. He walked
off and she followed closely behind.
“Maha'vin,” the male growled softly. “It has been a
while.”
“Over a hundred years to be exact,” Maha'vin replied.
Kayla begin to wonder exactly how old he was. “This is
the ooman I discussed with you.” Kayla removed her hood and stared at the tall
Yautja for a moment. His dreads were half way down his back and he stood with
armor and weapons on.
He nodded at her then looked back at Maha'vin. “I did
not bring a communicator with me…”
“It’s ok,” Kayla said. “I can understand you.”
“Amazing,” he chuckled. He placed his hand on her
shoulder. “I am Shaktik. You may call me Scar.” A
lady walked into the room.
“And I am…”
“Alexa Woods,” Kayla said in
complete shock.”
