Loki: Hadn't even
thought about, why Lu wanted the monastery to burn, but I'll explain
in the next chapter. For now John's having fun at Midnite's.

Chapter 5 – It's a bar
John smirked at the
bouncer, who was guarding the club's entry. The bulky man regarded
him with a sour expression, obviously remembering their last
encounter. Turning around to comment about the situation to Lucifer,
he found the Devil gone. Dammit. Hate it, when he does that. Asshole
could at least give a warning, before he leaves. When John turned
back to the bouncer, he was holding up one of the familiar cards.
“A wolf in sheep's clothing.”
Lighting himself a
cigarette, John entered the dim club. A
loud, rhythmic beat was filling the room,
while countless bodies, demon and angel alike, filled the dance
floor. But as soon as he entered, time seemed to freeze for a moment
as all attention was immediately directed at him.
The angels seemed to
recoil from him, drawing back into darker corners of the club and
huddling together in small groups. Cowards. When he let his eyes
flash a menacing red, John could smell the
scent of their fear permeating the air. Funny how the high and mighty
angels were behaving like scared little children at the moment.
The demons were an
entirely different matter. As soon as his eyes flashed, they drew
closer to him, like moths would draw to a flame. Enjoying the
attention, John let his hands roam over the male and female demons,
that seductively pressed against his body. The fact that they fought
amongst each other for the privilege to be
close to him, had John's ego soaring right through the ceiling.
Suddenly he felt a
rather familiar demon body pressed against him. Ellie. It figured,
that that particular bitch was keen on having a bit of his shine and
power. She almost purred as she let her hand slide inside John's
shirt.
The second Ellie
touched one of John's nipples, she and every other demon close to the
former exorcist, were blown away from his body. Their shrieks of pain
filled the club, easily drowning out the loud music and causing the
angels to huddle even closer together. John just smirked. Obviously
somebody was getting a little jealous.
“Seems like Lucifer is a
little possessive, Johnny-boy. He doesn't
like it if his 'property' is touched.”, the leer accompanying
Balthazar's statement clarified his
meaning.
“Bally.” John almost
purred his answer and Balthazar got the distinct impression, that
this couldn't be a good thing. But he stood his ground, although all
other demons took a step back, when John advanced on him. “Get
on your knees, asshole.”
The fury on the
half-breed's face was instantaneous as his knees started trembling
and tried to bend. His mind resisted, but finally his body gave in to
his superior's command. This was one of the
days, he hated hell's rules. Lighting himself a new cigarette John
smirked and motioned for him to get up again. Gathering as much of
his dignity as he could, Balthazar hissed.
“When he tires of you, I'll be
the first in line waiting to 'play' with you, exorcist.”
Bending toward the
half-breed's ear, John quickly retaliated: “And when I tire of
your attitude, I will play with you again. And I won't be as nice as
the last time, asshole.” When Balthazar stormed off in a huff,
the scent of his arousal was left behind, still lingering in the air.
So the little slut still wanted him. Grinning to himself, John
decided that playing with the little half-breed shit was infinitely
more fun, since he had the upper hand.

Remembering, why he had
come to Midnite's in the first place, John continued toward the door
leading to Midnite's meeting room. The demons and angels were almost
stumbling over each other to get out of his way as he slowly crossed
the club. Being hell's second-in-command obviously affected the
angels as much as the demons.
He had almost reached
the door, when an angel blocked his way. Before John could snarl his
displeasure at the stupid half-breed, it lifted it's head. Chas. John
almost gasped at seeing his former
apprentice dressed up completely in white, with golden wings adorning
his shoulders. So the kid was an angel half-breed now. Most likely he
had annoyed the hell out of God with his constant nagging and they
had elegantly solved the problem by sending him down. At least that
was John's opinion on the matter.
“John?”
“Chas, I have no time for
this, get out of my way.”
“Why did you do that? Why did
you give your soul to Lucifer? You could have been saved.”
“Listen, kid. I don't want to
hear your stupid soul saving crap.”
Stepping around his
former apprentice, John walked further towards the door. Never one to
give up quickly, Chas simply ignored John's dismissal and followed
the former exorcist. Still trailing behind like a lost pup. The
clingy attitude of the teen had always annoyed John, although he
generally liked the kid. But right now, he had some business with
Midnite and wasn't in the mood to listen to angelic lectures.
“John, you have to listen to
me. I'm sure, there is a way to save your soul. Then you can go up to
heaven. It must be terrible for you in hell, John. But I can help you
get back into God's good graces. Everyone up there will surely...”
Turning around the
moment the door to the back room opened, John interrupted him. “Guess
what, kid? I don't want to be saved.” Leaving a dumbstruck
angel half-breed behind, John stepped into Midnite's lair.

The heavy door closed behind him as he stepped up to the voodoo
priest, who was calmly sitting in his chair. “Don't get up.”
Without further comment, John drew himself a chair and sat opposite
Midnite, who was smoking one of his sweet smelling cigarettes.
“You haven't been here since Mammon was defeated.”
The priest's voice was neutral, holding neither praise nor
condemnation. Not that John had expected any. Midnite had never given
a shit about which side people were on as long as they kept his
precious balance and paid their drinks. But at closer examination, he
had muddled the balance a bit by changing sides. Grinning internally,
John lit himself a cigarette before answering the priest.
“I was busy.”
“I thought I heard laughter that night. Lucifer was
obviously pleased by your change of allegiance.”
Thinking back to that night, John smirked, before he answered:
“Oh, yes, he was pleased. But that's not, what I'm here for. I
need your help.”
“John.” The voodoo priest
suddenly sounded exasperated, “You know, that I am neutral.”
“But you helped me during the Mammon business. If your own
rules apply, you meddled with the balance then. I'm only asking you
to correct that.”
John grinned, when he heard Midnite cursing under his breath. The
priest had obviously counted on the fact,
that he wouldn't survive the night. Stupid mistake. After all, he was
THE John Constantine. Letting his triumph show on his face, John
waited for Midnite's reply.
Midnite lifted his arm and motioned for the man sitting next to
the door, but stayed silent. The man hurried out of the room and
appeared a few minutes later, carrying two plates and glasses of
wine. Nodding to John, the voodoo priest
started to eat.
“What do you need my help with?”
Swallowing the spiced rice, he was currently chewing, John
answered him: “I need to learn how to do astral projection.”
“So the powers Satan gave you aren't sufficient?”
“Not for what I am planning to do, no. That's all I want
Midnite. Teach me astral projection and I'm out of your hair.”
Midnite got up and walked to a hidden door in the wall. He
motioned for John to follow as he entered his private rooms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several hours later John stepped back into the meeting room,
closely followed by Midnite. He was feeling dead tired, but also
slightly exited. Finally he had the powers to set his plan in motion.
The voodoo priest followed him, looking
almost as tired as he himself.
“Thanks, Midnite. Finally you've been some help for once.”
He thought, he saw Midnite stifling a
grin, but he wasn't sure. The voodoo priest
had taught him everything he needed to know about astral
projection, although he had complained about the balance the whole
time. But John hadn't payed much attention to that. The priest might
officially be imitating Switzerland, but
he'd always helped John out, if the former exorcist had asked for his
assistance.
“Next time you visit my club, refrain from throwing my
guests around.”
John laughed at that comment and lifted his hands in surrender:
“Not my fault, that Lu gets jealous if all those half-breed
shits are throwing themselves at me.” Before he could leave,
Midnite started to give him a blessing.
“Oh, come on.” Having said that he was gone, leaving a
still praying Midnite behind.
