Chapter 5 - Hamunaptra
By the time they
reached what had once been Hamunaptra, Nefertiri was nowhere to be
seen. The whole area looked chaotic. The evidence of the digging that
had taken place before still clearly visible. Getting off their
horses, they tried to find an entrance to the now hidden temple by
following Nefertiri's trail in the sand. Finally they came to a small
hole in the ground, which led to an underground chamber.
All four of them got
in, as Rick wasn't willing to risk leaving Jonathan or Alex behind
again. To their luck there was only one way to go from the chamber,
because the other parts of the room had caved in. Following a long
hallway, they tried to figure out in which part of the temple they
were. Ardeth, knowing the temple's layout, told them: “We have
to find Maat's shrine. There should be the key and the new
directions.”
“Do you know where the shrine
is located?”
“No, but we have to get deeper
into the temple.”
Following that advice
they went on, their surroundings getting darker and slightly damper
the further they went. Most parts of the temple were caved in and
they had to continuously clear away stones and fallen pillars, that
blocked their way. Crawling under a low part of the ceiling they
suddenly found themselves in a huge room, the treasure deposit.

As they walked through
the room they could see Scarab shells littering the floor everywhere.
And amongst all the dead bugs they could also make out human remains.
Taking a closer look, Rick recognized his old friend Bennie's
clothes. He shook his head, muttering to himself: “He had it
coming.”, before rejoining the rest of the group.
There were two entries
to the room, that weren't blocked and they weren't sure which way to
go. Ardeth tried to remember the plan of Hamunaptra he had once seen,
but his concentration was destroyed by the insistent clatter of metal
hitting metal.
Turning around Rick
glared at his brother-in-law, who just shrugged and put the treasure
he had examined back down. Rick focused his
attention back on the Med-jai warrior next to himself.
“I'm not sure. But if I
remember correctly, this way should take us directly to the shrine.”
“Maybe we should split up, in
case you are wrong. I take Alex with me and you go with Jonathan.”
As Ardeth nodded his
approval, Rick grabbed Alex hand and went through the first doorway.
The Med-jai didn't waste any time and took the second way. But he had
only gone a few meters, when he realized,
that Jonathan wasn't following. Sticking his head back into the
treasure chamber, he glared at the Englishman, who was examining a
golden figurine.
“Do you think...?”
“No.”
Seeing the
ready-to-kill look on Ardeth's face, Jonathan reluctantly followed
him into the dark hallway.

Rick and Alex followed the dark tunnel, their torches barely
illuminating the way. Coming upon another fork in the tunnel, they
halted. The two entrances were richly decorated with hieroglyphics
Rick wasn't able to decipher.
“Alex, can you read what stands here?”
“Sure. The first one reads, 'Follow the path of death and it
will lead you to Osiris' realm' and the other says 'Follow the path
of life and you shall receive Isis' blessing.'”
“I'd say we take the second one then.”
Continuing on their way carefully, they came upon many smaller
chambers, but none contained a shrine of Maat or further evidence of
the shrines existence. The wall decorations had grown darker and now
the walls were painted with scenes of death and war.
“Maybe we should have taken the other way.”
Rick had barely spoken the words, when his torchlight illuminated
the wall in front of them. They had walked into a dead-end. The wall
looked somehow strange. There were small holes everywhere and their
insides glittered metallic. Taking a step closer to get a better
look, Rick felt a stone give way under his foot.
“Shit. Alex, down.”
Both of them dropped to the floor just in time, as hundreds of
small metal arrows flew out of the wall and
over their heads. Breathing a sigh of relief, Rick looked Alex over,
making sure that his son was ok.
“I think it's the other way, dad. They must have
deliberately mislabeled the entries.”
They turned and went back in the direction they had come from,
hoping that Ardeth and Jonathan had had more success in their search.

Ardeth desperately hoped to find the shrine soon, before he gave
in to the urge to simply wring Jonathan's neck. The Englishman was
endlessly going on about the treasures they had passed and whatever
else unimportant stuff he could think
about. Nothing seemed to be able to stop him and Ardeth had long ago
stopped listening to the one-sided conversation. The only thing, that
he was worried about was that the noise Jonathan was making might
warn Nefertiri if she was here.
In front of them the tunnel took a sharp turn left and Ardeth
thought, that he remembered that about the way leading to the shrine.
Unable to see, what lay ahead of them, he motioned for Jonathan to be
quiet. But his gesture remained unheeded as Jonathan was examining
some paintings on the walls.
“Be quiet, for heaven's sake.”
Looking slightly insulted by the grumpy Med-jai Jonathan shut his
mouth. They carefully looked around the bend and there it was. The
shrine of Maat. The golden room was already shining in the meager
light of their torches.
They quickly went over to the golden chamber, that's entrance was
decorated with tall pillars. Having barely entered, Jonathan heard a
noise and turned around to see what it was. The last thing he saw
before darkness swallowed him was an ancient vase, rapidly moving in
the direction of his head.
Having knocked Jonathan out, Nefertiri flew from the chamber, the
key firmly encased in her hand. Ardeth ran after her, leaving
Jonathan behind. He tried to shoot her, in order to get her to stop,
but she was lucky and dodged all of his bullets. The bends in the way
made it hard to shoot at all.
Hoping that Rick would be able to hear him and intercept her at
the treasure chamber, Ardeth called out to him.

Rick and Alex had already reached the fork in the tunnel again,
when they heard Ardeth's cry echoing through the hallways. Running
toward the treasure chamber, Rick left Alex behind. He already drew
his gun while he was running, without any idea of what he would
encounter. 'Hopefully no mummies.'
The moment he burst into the treasure deposit, Nefertiri came in
through the other entry. He was frozen in shock for a moment at
seeing her, before he realized that she held the key in her hand.
Without hesitating for a second, she sprinted in the direction of the
exit, Rick hot on her heels.
He followed her out of the temple and over to her horse, never
coming close enough to catch her. When she swung herself onto her
horse, Rick paused and lifted his gun. As long
as she climbed onto her horse, she was still, so he could easily
focus on her.
“Evy, wait.
She paused for a second, but she didn't even look back at him.
Pointing his gun right at her, Rick got ready to shoot. He put his
finger on the trigger and started to pull.
