Chapter 49
Several hours later, a nymph arrived with news from the giants. The Cyclopes had deemed their allies and ranks built to the highest number possible. If a time could come to fight, it was now. “So it finally comes to be,” Zeus mused grimly. “Very well. We shall embark before dawn tomorrow.” After the messenger had departed, Zeus found his arm being grasped by thin hands. Turning where he sat, he looked down at Hades, lying beside him. Fear had filled the eldest god’s green eyes. “I don’t want you to go,” Hades whispered. The same paralyzing fear which had gripped his heart the first time he watched Zeus and Poseidon depart from Crete had returned with a tenfold increase in strength. Just the possibility that he might not see his brothers again after this night was too frightening to even consider. “You know I must do this,” Zeus whispered back. “Unless we take on our wretched father now, we will never be free from him.” “But what if you cannot defeat him? What he kills you, a-and I’m l-left… all alone…” “It won’t happen,” Zeus quickly retorted. “We will have victory. I know this.” The possibility of defeat was not given any room in Zeus’ thoughts, as he feared that even the slightest shadow of doubt would allow Cronos to prevail. Hades did not speak further on the matter, having sensed his youngest brother’s disposition. Instead he thought of his own plight and being left on Cerberus’ mercy for the upcoming days. The mere idea was almost enough to make him weep. Only a few more hours… “Zeus, is there anything I can… do for you?” Hades asked, his voice trembling as he took the Olympian leader’s large hand in both of his. “Oh, aren’t you sweet…” Zeus said with a small scoff, even though he was moved by the offer. Unfortunately, Hades’ injuries prevented Zeus from taking the one thing he truly did need right now from his brother – a release. “I will make do with what I have,” he replied. “And all I need right now is you.” “Do you not wish to make love?” the elder god asked. “I would love to,” Zeus said with a smile. “But not at the price of causing you further harm. I suggest we make a pact: the moment I return from the battlefield, you and I will go to bed and make love as free gods.” Hades grinned at the thought. “The very moment?” he tried playfully. Zeus chuckled. “As soon as physically possible.” He lifted the hands holding his own and kissed both of them. “Now if you will excuse me, I will gather more firewood.” Chiron was just outside of the cave, seated next to Poseidon and Cerberus. Cerberus, large and monstrous as it was, lay with its three heads lazily resting on heavy clawed feet. Seeing it in such a rested manner made Zeus begin to wonder how he had found it to be intimidating in the first place. “We think Cerberus understands our command,” Poseidon stated. “It will keep watch for the three of us tonight so that we may be well rested for tomorrow’s journey.” “Very good,” Zeus replied. “Where are you headed?” Chiron asked curiously. “To get firewood,” the leader answered, heading for the trees. “Hades is still too much at risk to go searching for it on his own when we will not be here.” Zeus hoped that Chiron did not notice the color in his cheeks or the erection straining beneath his robe, as his claim to collect firewood was a blatant lie. Instead the god needed a moment of privacy to relieve his needs. Once Zeus figured he had reached an area where he was neither seen nor heard by his kin, he quickly tore off his robe, allowing his achingly hard member to spring free. What he was about to do was something he considered so humiliating that he doubted he would ever be able to look his brothers in the eye if they caught him. Breathing heavily, Zeus closed his powerful hand around his phallus and started the cumbersome task of giving himself a manual release. It was something he had not done since he was a boy, and something he swore never to do again once he reached a certain age. He was Zeus; no matter where he was, he had never had trouble finding willing bodies to take his pleasure from, and to spill his seed on the ground was something unthinkable – at least until this moment. Zeus could not – no matter how badly his desire called for it – use his wounded mate to tend to his needs tonight. Hades was wounded not only in body but in soul as well, and Zeus did not want to leave his eldest brother with the memory of having caused him such pain. Thankfully not much was required to bring Zeus a climax. He suppressed a loud groan as he came, hoping that the wood nymphs who had stopped by to deliver a message were not still lurking in the forest. Zeus all but collapsed with his relief, leaning against a tree as he breathed deeply and regained his composure. Hand over his eyes, he wondered what his bothers would think of him to see him as he was now. They would be surprised to say the least, he considered. They might even say that manual stimulation was perfectly normal. Normal for others perhaps, but not for Zeus. Chiron and Poseidon watched as Zeus finally came from the forest, bundle of sticks in his arms. Cerberus was dozing at this point and paid no attention. “I suppose you succeeded,” Poseidon remarked, eyeing the bundle. Zeus only muttered an affirmative and entered the cave. Brow wrinkled, Chiron eyed his half-brother. “What was that about?” he asked Poseidon, regarding the greeting. Poseidon only smiled and looked out over the wooded horizon. “If I told you, Zeus might kill me.” Zeus placed his bundle of sticks – he could not come back empty handed after all – in a small nook of the cave wall which had become a storage space for firewood. Adding one bit of wood to the fire, he eased himself beneath the bearskin and lay down next to Hades, who immediately cuddled up against him. “Are you tired?” Zeus asked him. He felt Hades’ face brush against him as the older god nodded. “Are you?” Hades asked. “Yes. Fortunately I have someone to share my dreams with.” Zeus kissed his brother and mate’s head and wrapped his arms around the smaller god. For Hades, dawn came far too soon. He was gently shaken awake by Zeus, who embraced him and claimed it was not necessary that Hades leave his sleeping place. The older god, however, insisted and hobbled out of the cave to give all his siblings a proper farewell, painfully aware that he might never get another chance. Cerberus had awoken as well and seemed to understand his orders, not even attempting to follow Chiron and the gods when they started walking away from the mouth of the cave. One look at the beast in the diffuse light of the rising sun made Hades shiver. He was alone now, with only a three-headed dog for company. Zeus and Poseidon had left him with plenty of food, both meat and greens that would provide him with enough to eat for at least one week. Water was easy enough to retrieve from the spring located only a small distance away, and his brothers had left him with the right tools and enough firewood to start a fire when he needed one. Still, he was alone, and the knowledge chilled his heart in a way that no fire could cure. Shivering and already silently weeping, the wretched, miserable god returned to his bedding. Obediently Cerberus followed him, seemingly determined to always keep an eye on Hades. Hades remembered how he swore to himself that he would scream should this beast enter the cave with him. But why bother? No one was here anymore. Crying out might even prompt the animal’s instinct to attack. At least I’m not cornered, he thought. A very weak attempt at reassurance, but he thought it nonetheless. Trying in vain to ignore the creature, Hades curled up and turned over, a very uncomfortable thing to do in his wrecked body, but he felt a little less nervous when Cerberus was not within his vision. He heard movement and reasoned that the beast had sat down and was now staring at him, long tail flopping back and forth on the ground like an intent feline. Hades was reminded of the attack by Rhea’s lions when the Olympians first explored Crete. At least said animals only had one pair of eyes each. “If you are going to eat me,” Hades muttered glumly, “then you might as well do it now before the suspense of waiting kills me first.” Another sound of movement and Hades’ eyes widened until he realized that his frightening companion had lain down next to him. Good Mother Earth, the thing smelled. Hades lay still for what felt like several hours, waiting for the stinking beast to get up and procure food, relieve itself, or anything at all that would require it to leave the cave, but Cerberus remained as still as the god it had been left to watch over. The only movement was caused by the slow rise and fall of its massive ribcage and the occasional blinking of its six black eyes. When the sun began to set and the light spilling into the cave became diffuse, Hades realized he was facing his first ever night alone without Zeus to warm and comfort him with gentle words and touches. Tears sprang forth in his eyes, and before he even knew it, he was weeping again. Hades curled up into a ball beneath his bear skin blanket and tried his best to stifle his sobs so as not to alert his menacing guardian to his emotional state. Cerberus, however, was not slow on the uptake and immediately lifted two of its heads to look curiously at the god with the leaking eyes. He knew that watery eyes were a sign of distress in bipedals and wondered what had caused it this time. This particular bipedal wept a lot, and with no obvious cause, which confused the three-headed canine. Hades jerked when he suddenly felt a warm, damp snout nudging at his shoulder, followed shortly by a tongue lapping at his neck. His misery momentarily forgotten, Hades reeled back, both terrified and utterly disgusted. “Get away!” he managed to croak out, but to no avail. Now one head had been joined by another. “Get away from me! Don’t you understand?” Clearly the creature did not. Its intrusive snouts, all cold and wet, were now poking at Hades, and each time a mouth opened to let loose a long, slimy tongue, the foul thing’s even fouler breath hung in the air about the god’s face. A strange heat passed through Hades’ flesh as he experienced the fear and revulsion of his guardian’s behavior. He was not sure what the heat was, but for all he knew, it was some averse reaction to this monster’s close contact. “I don’t care how safe Chiron says you are,” he all but snarled, hands up to push the beast away. “Just get AWAY FROM ME!” As Hades shoved, the heat increased in his hands. Though he felt no pain, he winced at it, for within the briefest of moments, that heat released from him in a fleeting burst of light. Somehow, though he did not want to believe it, Hades had created something which looked very much like a small flame. The fire was gone nearly as quickly as it had appeared, but Hades knew he had not imagined it, for Cerberus had obviously seen it as well. The creature recoiled from the flickering light which had bloomed before its faces and backed away. A peculiar noise arose from its snouts and Hades thought for a moment that he might now become a meal. Cerberus lowered its heads and… snorted. In fact the noise sounded almost a sneeze. Shaking its three heads, the beast looked up at Hades, who stared at it with wide eyes, and sat down, staring back as though questioning what had just occurred. “I told you to stay away from me…” Hades muttered, hugging his knees to his chest. “You only have yourself to blame.” Cerberus cocked its middle head to the side, as if questioning what the god was saying, but it did not growl or otherwise display any aggression. Several minutes passed before Hades felt secure enough to take his eyes off the livestock-sized dog, reaching for the fruits and vegetables his brothers had left for him to eat. His stomach was grumbling from hunger, and listening closely, he could similar sounds coming from within his guardian. Cerberus glanced longingly at the dried meat which had been left for Hades as well, but he could remember a stern warning from Chiron not to touch it. “Go out and get yourself something to eat,” Hades urged. “I’ll be fine.” //More than fine, actually. The longer you’re away, the better I’m going to feel// Cerberus remained hesitant for a while longer, obviously ambivalent about leaving Hades alone, but at last he could no longer resist the idea of sinking his teeth into fresh tender meat – from perhaps a young buck – and the sweet, spicy scent of still-warm blood. Hades breathed a sigh of relief when he watched the huge beast slowly lumber out of the cave and disappear into the forest. Once he knew he was alone, the god helped himself to his small meal. He would ration it out of instinct, uncertain of when his brothers would be returning… if at all. Never had isolation felt so empty and cold. “Oh Zeus…” he murmured. “I missed you before you even left.” TBC...While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
