The corridors of the Yautja ship, dark and humid with tendrils of fragrant mist swirling across the floor, felt warm and welcoming to the returning Elder. For a while at least, he was grateful to be away from the over-bright lighting of the Federation ship, its corridors lined with conduits that undetectable to the eyes of the Oomans, emitted errant electromagnetic and radiation signals that caused his eyes to ache.
His clawed fingers traced the ornate carved patterns that decorated the bulkheads as he took a deep breath of warm, methane rich air. His mandibles flared slightly in appreciation. The Starfleet vessel in contrast, was cold and sterile. The oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere scratched at the throat and tore the lungs. He could breathe it of course but the mix of gases was not optimal for his species. He preferred his air supply with a little less oxygen and a little more methane.Moving slowly yet purposefully he made his way through the passageways and entered his private quarters. He stopped as he always did, to admire the rows upon rows of polished white skulls that grinned out at him from the walls of his trophy room. They represented only a small percentage of his trophies. The Elder had been successful in too many hunts to display all his kills.A pair of human skulls caught his attention and he smiled at the memories they brought back, so clear and distinct that he could all but smell the fresh blood and the explosive charges from their weapons. That had been a particularly good hunt! It had been a long time ago, early in the period that the Oomans called the twenty first century, in one of the planet’s arid desert regions. The two males had been soldiers on opposite sides of one of Earth’s many pointless wars; too busy trying to kill each other to sense the approach of the Predator until he had de-cloaked right in front of them. To their credit they had not panicked. The sight of him had caused them to forget their enmity and fight together for mutual survival. They had fought well and his body still bore the scars from their weapons. Those two had earned their place on his wall.
He moved on, stopping again at the centre-piece of his collection; the skull of the Kainde Amedha queen that he and Kay-lan had defeated in that long ago fight. The light reflected off the dark curves of her bone crest and just visible between her teeth, the secondary snapping jaws gaping for the kill. She was not the only queen he had killed but that one was special. On either side of the great queen skull were the remains of two drones. One had been his very first kill, the one that proclaimed him a blooded warrior. He remembered that moment with pride. The second, the one on the right, was Kay-lan’s first kill which he had kept and displayed in her honour.
The Elder’s blood stirred at the memory. It had been far too long since he had last hunted, he decided. After so many years one hunt had started to blur into the next and boredom had eventually set in. But it would be good he thought, to return to the scene of his Chiva and hunt once more with Kay-lan at his side. The Kainde Amedha were not the only worthy prey on that planet. Still thinking of the potential hunt, he entered his chamber and started to remove the heavy red cloak that hung from his broad shoulders before changing his mind. Whatever the Matriarch wanted from him, he was certain that it would not be a social call.Moving to his console, a touch of his claws brought it online and quickly and efficiently, he typed in the codes that would connect him directly to the council chambers on the home-world. Moments later he was looking at the face of the Yautja Matriarch. As always happened when he saw her, his heart beat just a little faster. She was magnificent – tall and regal with slender, waist length tresses that were only just starting to turn grey and were decorated with jewels and gold rings denoting her rank and position. She was also the bearer of his eldest surviving son.“Matriarch,” George bowed his head respectfully he addressed her.“Elder Jau’esh’enye,” she responded, her mandibles spread wide in a smile. “The mission goes well?”“It does,” he confirmed, “It is certain now that we will get the treaty we need and on terms that are favourable to us.” He raised his head to meet her gaze, noting that there was concern in her eyes, maybe even worry. “But that is not why you called is it? So what do you want, Natiri?”“You always could read me,” the Matriarch retorted wryly. The Elder allowed a soft purr to escape. “I have done more than ‘read’ you in the past,” he said suggestively “and I am not yet too old to do so again when next we meet.”Her skin colouring darkened attractively. “I may take you up on that offer,” she told him her expression becoming grim as she continued, “Assuming that you return alive from the mission I must assign you.”“What do you require of me?”“The ruling council have come to some decisions while you have been gone,” she informed him. The flirtatiousness gone, her demeanour changed, becoming that of a Matriarch to her senior Elder. “They remain committed to the alliance you have proposed but developments since your departure have led to increased concerns with regard to the breeding reserve at your current location.”No longer suggestive, his growl took on a wary, discontented tone. He did not like the sound of that. “And those concerns are?”“That it is far too close to the Federation border” she said bluntly. “A few days ago we found one of their freighters dead in space. The ship was infested with the Kainde Amedha and there were no survivors among the original crew. Had we not destroyed it, that ship would have drifted into populated regions and caused chaos.”“I have already warned them that this was a distinct possibility,” George said, frowning. “They have agreed to stay out of our space unless escorted by a Yautja vessel.”The Matriarch shook her head vigorously, the movement sending her tresses swaying in a manner that at any other time he would have found seductive. “It will not be enough. Not all Oomans are honourable. It is not the first time that their vessels have ‘strayed’ into our space. The Kainde Amedha are dangerous. They cannot be allowed to spread out of our control.”“I agree,” George said thoughtfully, “Tell me Natiri, this ship… did it have any identifying markings?”“It did,” the Matriarch confirmed, “A Blue and white insignia was painted on its side, looking something like…”“The Terran letters W and Y,” George interrupted. At her nod, he continued “I thought as much. That organisation is trouble.”“Another factor,” Natiri added, “Is that recent scientific reports indicate that the primates of that world are beginning to show signs of intelligence. We believe that in a few thousand years, they may develop into a sentient society and they must be given the chance to do so.”George nodded, his expression serious. He was beginning to see where this was leading and he did not like it at all.“Which is why,” the Matriarch said grimly, “We require you to purge the planet of the Kainde Amedha and correct the mistakes of our forefathers in allowing that world to become infested. You will bring the queen back alive. All drones and eggs are to be destroyed.”Silently George considered what the matriarch had told him. Yeyinde was a small vessel; it did not have the facilities of the clanship and he had only a limited number of Hunters with him. To cleanse the planet and capture the queen as the Matriarch demanded would take every warrior he had on board and even then it would be a hard, dangerous job. He repressed a sigh. When he’d formulated the idea of going hunting with Kay-lan, this was not quite what he’d had in mind.He would carry out the mission of course. He had no choice; his honour demanded that he obey the wishes of the Council. The Elder bowed his head in acquiescence. “It will be done.”*****Hope thats "interesting" enough for you... from this point, posting will slow down a bit as I am moving into completely new territory and quite honestly I am not sure how this will play out. Once again, thank you to those who have taken the time to leave positive words and encouragement for me!
