An unobtrusive chime signalled gently through the holographic cave system, warning the occupants that their allotted time was drawing to a close. The arrival of the next user had brought the holographic spa session to an end. As N'Sal tied her hair back, she licked her lips. They were dry, as was her throat. The heat had made her dehydrated.
Outside in the corridor, Lt Kellie sighed softly to himself and rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet. It was an old trick employed by centuries of soldiers and guards to keep their legs from tiring as they stood watch. When the holodeck door reopened he bolted to attention at the sight of a senior officer. “Where to now, Sir?” he enquired of Da'rian. The Predator frowned thoughtfully as he considered his answer to the question but it was the Ooman… no, he corrected himself mentally, she had called herself a Rom' Oo'lan… who answered. “I could use a drink” she informed him. “Will you join me in the Ten Forward Lounge?”The FedKIN agent was usually something of a loner and the invitation gave her as much surprise as it did the listening Kellie. She had found that she was actually enjoying Da'rian's company. He did not seem to fall into the same category as humanoids. Whilst she was aware that the Yautja were natural born killing machines, strangely enough she felt more comfortable around him than afraid. The Predator must have appreciated her company too as he was swift to incline his head, accepting her invitation with alacrity.**********Hurrying through the corridors on his way back to his quarters after a quick meal in Ten Forward, an off duty security guard came round a corner and hesitated as he saw the large Predator and his escort moving towards him. Politely the crewman stepped aside to allow them priority and as they came closer and passed him by, with a nod of acknowledgement from the armed guard on escort duty, he could not help feeling a little intimidated by the sheer size and build of the Yautja visitor. So this was the creature Rossi had been talking about. No wonder there had been trouble, the Predator looked terrifying. He hit his combadge. “Hey Rosie…”“What do you want, Charlie?” Rossi’s voice came back, “and don’t call me by that stupid name.”“I saw one of those aliens you were talking about,” Charlie replied, ignoring his friend’s irritation. “Wow, they’re enormous aren’t they?”“Those things shouldn’t be allowed to roam around the ship like that,” Rossi muttered angrily, “They killed O’Henry and got away with it. No-one even cares, it’s not right.”“Well, he wasn’t really roaming around,” Charlie said reasonably, “He had an escort… looked like they were heading for Ten Forward.” Hearing another set of footsteps approaching and aware that he should not be talking to Rossi while the other man was in confinement, he lowered his voice, “I’ve got to go; I don’t want you to get into trouble. I’ll talk to you later.” Quickly he cut the call and hurried on his way.His mood deteriorating, the Italian Petty Officer paced up and down his quarters. It wasn’t fair, he thought resentfully. The captain was biased towards those creatures. Gossip indicated that she’d spent a considerable amount of time with one of them while she had been missing down on that planet. Who knew what brainwashing she had undergone? She certainly did not care about her own crew. She might not have been there when O’Henry had been slaughtered but she must have been told about it when she’d returned and she’d done nothing, just glossed over it like nothing had happened and carried on negotiating with those murdering things! Rossi did not care if they were ambassadors or if they held diplomatic immunity, they should be made to pay for their crime. Abruptly Rossi came to a decision. It was up to him. Removing his combadge he tossed it onto his bunk. If anyone checked the computer would log him as being present in his quarters.Cautiously the Petty Officer stuck his head around the door and peered into the corridor. Officially he was confined to quarters, awaiting Captain’s Mast, but there were no guards. They had not been considered necessary; Starfleet trusted its officers and crew to obey orders. Well more fool Starfleet, Rossi thought contemptuously. If they would not act against the Yautja threat then he would. It was his duty he told himself, to disobey orders and take action. With a grim smile the Italian stepped into the empty passageway. There was an armoury cabinet a couple of decks up. If he could get to it without getting caught and help himself to a phaser rifle, he would be able to avenge his shipmate and make sure that at least one of those creatures was no longer a threat. His best option to remain out of sight was, he decided, the jefferies tubes. Finding the nearest access hatch he opened it and slipped in, closing it again behind him before making his way on his hands and knees through the tubes to his destination. The armoury cabinet was not guarded but it was locked. Working quickly, he entered Charlie’s access code. With his suspension from duty, he was concerned that his own would set off an alarm and he did not want to risk getting caught before he had accomplished his mission. He held his breath, hoping he had remembered his friend’s code correctly and let it out in a sigh of relief as the compartment door let out a loud click and swung open. Surveying the contents carefully, he picked out a phaser rifle. Activating it and priming the sight allowed him to check the charge on the weapon. Rossi gave a nod of satisfaction. Starfleet Officers were nothing if not efficient - the weapon was fully powered and would suit him perfectly. Locking the cabinet again, he returned to the jefferies tube, his new destination the Ten Forward lounge.**********A small group of marines were sitting round one of the tables by the huge window that took up one entire bulkhead of Ten Forward. Amid much laughter and light hearted, blatant cheating, they were playing a game of cards. All of them had been present on the recent mission to the planet to search or the missing captain and they recognised Da’rian as he entered the lounge with his companions. One of them, the large South African named van Zyl, raised a hand, waving it at the Predator in friendly greeting.Da’rian inclined his head in courteous response, a gesture he had learned from observing Kellie on their tour through the ship. This particular group of Oomans had distinguished themselves in his eyes. They had all fought the Kainde Amedha and made kills that proved them worthy of the title of Blooded Hunter and hence earned the respect of the Yautja people.“HEY, YOU!” The happy din that formed the usual soundtrack of Ten Forward died to nothing as if someone had stopped the playback. One by one and then in groups, faces turned to look. No-one had taken notice of the slight hiss of the lounge doors as they had slid open. People came and went all the time. Rossi's entrance had passed unnoticed - until he had brought them to attention with his shout.
“Hey You....” The Romulan stiffened, her fingers twitched near her sheathed weapons. Da'rian turned and stepped between them, spreading his mandibles wide and displaying his sharp inner teeth. Somehow he knew that the challenge was directed at him.
Authors note... I have received an email from AF threatening to delete this story completely if i dont remove my athors note that was the next chapter.. apparently the hundred or so words it contained takes up too much room. So I have moved it to here - although, since i am feeling very negative and down about the whole thing I may end up deleting it anyway.
I'm putting this on hold for a bit, while i decide what to do for the best. I have enjoyed writing it but I write for fun and share it in the hopes that others will enjoy it; that isnt the case. Only one person, Kellie, has shown any interest in the story (thank you Kellie for your support) and on the other site I post on, Fanfiction.net, I'm being torn to pieces. Nothing I do is right... there are too many non humans, there are not enough Preds, the preds are bullies, the preds are too nice, your characters are crap, your preds dont act like preds, your Klingons are wrong, your characters are all wimps, the fan fiction portrays the preds different so why are you doing it this way? (Ironically despite getting nothing but negative reviews over here, as soon as I removed the story, I got messages accusing me of being rude and childish for doing so) From looking at other stories on the site, it appears I am doing several things wrong... if i want rave reviews I should be using really awful spelling, zero grammar... be spoon feeding you with info like "kehlan's POV" "George's POV", probably write in one huge paragraph, be much more Mary sueish and add in some detailed slash scenes. Sorry it isnt going to happen.
So i'm going to post chapter 47 for you, to at least resolve the scene with Rossi, after that, I don't know.
As i said, i write for fun. sharing it is just pulling me down and making me feel miserable. I will continue for my own pleasure but i don't know if I will be posting any more of my work. I'm sorry if that makes it sound like I'm begging for reviews but without any support or encouragement i can't do this.
