“The Criminal known as Jonathan Price is to be turned over to me” Khetara demanded, ruthlessly suppressing the urge to cough. “He is guilty of murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm against citizens of the Klingon Empire.”
George gave a discontented grunt at Khetara’s words. “This Ooman has committed crimes against the Yautja people. He must be turned over to our Arbitrators to face justice.”In response, Khetara bared her teeth at the Elder, “The Klingon Empire has prior claim on him,” she snarled, “We have several outstanding warrants for his arrest, all of which predate any jurisdiction you may claim to have.”A low growl rumbled through the Elder at Khetara’s imperative stance. The Yautja were a matriarchal species and the instinct to defer to female authority was both inherent and powerful. However in this instance George ignored it. General Khetara was being unreasonable and he would not acquiesce to her demands.“Enough!” Kehlan stood up and faced them both across the table. Her sharp tone cut the rising tension with the ease of a yacht in full sail through the ocean. “I am Endeavour’s captain and until the General is declared medically fit to return to full duty – which at this time she is not; as senior officer present, I am exercising my prerogative to take command of the mission and the negotiations. Jonathan Price is a member of my crew. The crimes were committed on my ship, in my jurisdiction. Therefore I will be the one to decide his fate!” She glared at George and Khetara before allowing her piercing gaze to travel across the other faces at the table, wordlessly letting them know that she would not be persuaded on this matter. “If you disagree then you are of course within your rights to lodge a formal appeal with the Federation Council. Am I understood?”To her surprise, and somewhat to his own, George was the first to back down. It was not in his nature to argue with an angry female and at that moment, Kehlan’s annoyance was very obvious. Whilst he found he could happily oppose the General, on this issue at least, his racial memory would not let him disobey the Commanding Female. He’d been willing to kill Kehlan earlier, for showing disrespect for his authority. Now, he realised with some chagrin, he was guilty of the same transgression. His reptilian scales darkened in shame and embarrassment.Watching the proceedings with interest, Kihr’yende bit back a snort of amusement as his father lowered his head in a rare display of submission before the female captain. “The Yautja people will accept your judgement,” George concurred, almost humbly.Khetara, on the other hand was less inclined to be reasonable. The Klingon woman would never forget that terrifying, horrific moment when her nails had fractured against the structure she had been desperately hanging on to and she had lost her grip, beginning an inexorable slide towards the open doors and certain death in the freezing vacuum of space. “Unacceptable!” she snarled, clenching her fists. “I am perfectly capable of returning to duty immediately and I intend to ensure Price faces Klingon Imperial justice!” Her diatribe was abruptly cut short as she broke down in a paroxysm of coughing; her damaged lungs giving the lie to her statement.A holo-medic was standing discreetly at the side of the room. Quickly he moved forward with a portable respirator. At first, Khetara fought it but finally accepted the device. Even as she held the oxygen mask to her face, taking the life giving gas into her lungs, she glared at Kehlan; letting the anger show in her eyes. As far as she was concerned, this discussion was not over.*****Khetara’s return to life had been a complete shock to the crews of both ships, although a very welcome one. The General herself was saying very little on the subject. All her major organs had been damaged by vacuum exposure with the greatest damage to her heart and lungs. She tired quickly; breathing was difficult and it still hurt to talk. It was easier to let Kreltek do the explaining. He was the one after all, along with the surgeon, who had made the decisions. Khetara had been unconscious at the time and knew only what they had told her.“Kavoq chose not to tell anyone of his plans,” Kreltek had explained. “And on learning of his reasons, I concur with his judgement. At the time, we had no way of being sure of just who the attack was aimed at, or if the perpetrator would try again. Kavoq felt it was better that for the time being, while the General was still vulnerable in sick bay the outside world should consider her to be dead.”“So what did you do?” Kehlan asked the surgeon, curiously.Kavoq spread his palms in a 'dont blame me' gesture. “I like to read history texts in my down time” he confessed. “I've recently been browsing Federation medical journals from the last century. Turns out they used to have this technique called Bio-regenerative therapy or Regen. The journal detailed the procedure. I realised that the General's case was just a matter of allowing the body to rest and heal. I had originally put her into stasis after injecting her to stop her heard and body functions so I decided to take her out of stasis and try this method.”“And it worked,” Kehlan surmised, glancing across at the Klingon General. The surgeon nodded. “The Regen speeded things up quite spectacularly whilst I kept the General on heart/lung bypass. Unfortunately the procedure is not sterile. It's probably why the Feds stopped using it in favour of those sterile stasis fields they're so fond of. But, yes… it worked and I will be writing a scientific paper to that effect.” “I did not know immediately” Kreltek added, shrugging a little self-consciously. “At the time, I truly believed Khetara had died. The surgeon informed me later of what he had done. He felt that it would be better if my reactions were genuine and natural.” With a wry grin he continued, “It turns out my acting skills are better than I thought. They’re remaking ‘Battle-Cruiser Vengeance you know. I think I should audition for the part of Captain Koth.”“I am Koth” Kehlan proclaimed dramatically, “Koth of the Vengeance…”“And this ship is my prize!” All the gathered Klingons joined in reciting the last line before bursting into hearty laughter. They had all grown up watching that show and there was not one of them who had not pretended to be Koth as a child. The relief of Khetara’s unexpected resurrection along with the capture of the culprit was bound to have caused an outburst of emotion sooner or later. This particular one was somewhat hysterical, even for Klingons. In some bemusement the two Predators glanced at each other, not understanding the joke but willing to accept the humour of the moment. They too felt relief, but it was not over yet. There was still the matter of the treaty to attend to. Even with Price in custody and a closer understanding forming between the Yautja, the Klingon Empire and the Federation, George did not expect the negotiations to be straightforward.***********
Just a quick thank you to my loyal reviewers and followers with a special mention to Kellie - Kellie, I hope you didnt mind we naming a character after you.
I hope you're enjoying the story, it's hard to tell as there are so few comments left. But anyway, thank you to those who have commented or hit the 'follow' or 'favourite' button. I had thought that there was only a chapter or two left but George and Kehlan have let me know in no uncertain terms that they are not done yet... so if you don't mind, I may continue a little longer as there appear to be a few twists, turns and upsets along the way.
Ooh, I entered a short story in a competition in February and to my complete shock, won first prize. So I will be uploading it here although it will be in the Star trek section as its not a crossover. So please do look out for "Dark is the Night" and my other stories.
