The petite female moved further forward into the light, a pensive expression on her face. She wore a white robe of woven fabric. Even though she and it were soaking wet, the robe did not cling, rather it hung loosely, barely hinting at the feminine curves hidden beneath its folds. "Bathers at the Fire Falls must cover themselves," she explained. "It's customary."
The Predator was not good at reading the body language of Ooman females but she did not seem particularly angered by his intrusion. Nevertheless he decided to err on the side of caution and address this before worrying about any other requirements. "Do you wish me to leave?"N'Sal shrugged. "If you were a member of the crew I would have killed you already. As it is... since you're here you might as well get warm."His mandibles flared in what she guessed passed for a wry smile. "It is good that you did not attempt to kill me" he said, "Your skull looks far better where it is than it would on my trophy wall."She snorted in reluctant amusement. "Many have tried... Computer, appropriate bathing wear for second user."Da'rian watched with interest as the item materialised. A pile of folded cloth appeared on a nearby rock. It seemed to be the same garment that N'Sal wore but much longer and cut for Da'rian's larger form. Lifting the garment, he shook it out and studied it carefully. It would be better if he removed his armour, he realised. While the armour could withstand getting wet, this was supposed to be a relaxation programme and he would be far more comfortable without it. He suspected however, that this little Ooman female would not like it if he simply started removing his coverings. He hesitated, unsure of the social niceties of the situation in which he found himself. She cleared her throat, a soft noise that barely echoed in the chamber. As the Yautja glanced up she gestured towards a smaller cave within the cavern. "In there."Grateful for the guidance, he allowed his mandibles to flare again in a slight smile and moved towards the indicated spot.*****
Outside in the corridor, Lieutenant Kellie stared in consternation at the holodeck doors. Now what was he supposed to do? His orders had been to accompany the alien ambassador – whether to protect the visitor from the crew or the crew from the visitor, he was not entirely sure. Either way, he was there to prevent any further incidents that might jeopardise the treaty. The panel indicated that the door was now locked. Only the head of security could authorise the override except in an emergency situation. Since Da’rian did not have either the clearance or the knowledge to lock the holodeck doors, Kellie could only assume it had been done by the original occupant. The programme was registered to the Romulan FedKIN agent, he noted. He hadn't met her but he'd heard stories and from all accounts, she could look after herself. Kellie sighed and settled in to wait.*****Removing his armour and placing it neatly on a shelf, Da’rian donned the robe he had been given. A second shelf held the belongings of his companion – a black and grey uniform, neatly folded and lying on top of it, a leather sheath containing a knife of some sort. It was his understanding that in general, Oomans did not carry weapons. So the little female was a warrior then, Da’rian thought. She had indicated as much in her comments but the presence of the knife confirmed it. Resisting the urge to examine the weapon more closely – an honourable warrior did not touch another warrior’s weapons without permission – Da’rian turned and made his way back into the main area of the baths. The robe he wore felt strange… clumsy… as a warrior he was not accustomed to soft fabric and its length seemed to impede his movements excessively. The concept of a robe in a bath seemed counterproductive to the Predator. Nevertheless, he was here to learn and he would abide by the customs of his host, however strange they might seem. His new companion was reclining in a hollow in the rocks, a hollow worn by centuries of bodies resting beside an exposed pocket of the lava that heated the pool. Slowly the Predator approached her, the sound of his claws tapping on the stone floor warning her of his presence. He glanced at the pool and then at her, silently asking permission to enter the water and her lips turned upwards in a slight smile as she gave a nod of acquiescence. There were steps in the side of the pool, he learned, rough-hewn and uneven and the lowest of them was just deep enough for him to sit with the water covering almost, but not quite, up to his shoulders.Da’rien let out a sigh of pleasure as the scalding hot water caressed his skin. It had been too long since he had relaxed like this and he had forgotten how good it felt. As the tension in his muscles eased, a thought occurred. If the Oomans found the ship's environment comfortable, why did this one retreat to such a different one. Deciding that bluntness was his best option, he voiced the question.
N'Sal pushed her thick hair back, displaying elegantly pointed ears and a vestigial prominence of the frontal skull. “I'm not human,” she shrugged. “At least, not completely but the visible difference is so little as to be negligible to them.”
“The Federation is made up of many races" the Yautja conceded, trying to remember what he had learned in his studies. "You are Vulcan?”
N’Sal shook her head. “My mother was Romulan.”
“You are a hybrid then?” he queried. “Your captain, Kay-lan, is another such, is she not?”
N’Sal nodded. “Yes, she has a human mother and Klingon father… although she isn’t my captain. I’m not a member of the crew and I don’t take orders from her.” Seeing his frown, she continued, “I work on the Starbase. I am a visitor on this ship. I respect her position as captain of course, but I am not part of the chain of command.”He considered that. “Interbreeding is common then among your kind? It is considered acceptable?”"It's acceptable enough within the Federation I suppose... but not amongst Romulans,"
"Nor among my own people," Da'rian confessed. He frowned slightly and shifted his position in sudden discontent causing a wave that sent hot water sloshing out of the pool and towards the stones where his new friend reclined. The concept of breeding with Prey, whether for pleasure or offspring was anathema to the Yautja people. He remembered seeing his Elder sitting under the holographic tree, his arm around his companion as she leaned on him. It seemed to Da’rian that the Elder was far too involved with the Klingon hybrid he had brought into the clan.
"You seem ill at ease," N’Sal leaned over and scooping up a handful of water, she threw it onto the lava. Instantly the water evaporated into steam with a loud hissing sound. Leaning forward, she inhaled the fresh vapour deeply and appreciatively.
Unsure whether he should speak of it or not, the Predator was silent for a moment. “You said that this Kay-lan is your friend?”“I’ve known her for years,” N’Sal told him, “Since we were teenagers in fact. We’ve saved each other’s lives more than once.” She gave the Predator a perceptive look. “What troubles you?”“I have concerns,” the Yautja warrior admitted. “Your captain…” Now that it came to it, he did not know how to put it into words. “My Elder… They…” He stopped and then continued in a rush “They are too close.”“They are friends,” the Romulan woman told him. “Close friends. Kehlan told me what happened down there in the jungle. An experience like that creates a bond that can last a lifetime.”“Then you do not think…?” N’Sal was unable to stop herself from laughing. “Kehlan has a life mate” she told the Predator. “She is married… happily married… to Admiral Mackenzie, the head of Starbase 24. I can assure you, there’s no way she would even consider mating with someone else.”The Romulan woman sobered as she realised that she was quite casually discussing interspecies sex and mating practices with a male who was not only a complete stranger to her, but also extremely dangerous. She did not trust males… had good reason not to trust them. Yet she felt safe in the presence of this one. Sure, he was far bigger and stronger than her; he could tear her apart in a moment if he wanted to. But he would not harm her in any way that counted. Not completely sure why the opinion of this female mattered to him, Da’rian was nevertheless reassured by her answer as well as a little embarrassed at having even doubted. He should have more faith in his Elder, he decided. Besides, what the Elder did in his spare time was no-one’s business but his own. Huffing a little at the thought, the Predator sank a little deeper in the water and relaxed. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
