Chapter 4.
Captain Jack Sparrow sat upon the deck and drowned his grief
in his favorite drink, Rum. He would
every once in a while, which in truth meant after every swig, again curse
Bootstrap Bill… his best friend. Jack
sighed, and remembered the fine man he had once been honored to call
friend. The only reason Barbossa had
been his first mate, was because Bill had not been paying attention
enough. It was a dangerous mission that
they were going on, and Bill was daydreaming about his son and wife.
“Bootstrap what are ye doing man?” He had screamed one hot
day.
The other man had looked around to find his captain. He jumped down from the ledge of the boat
and smiled. “Sorry Captain. The color of the ocean is the same as
Mary’s. I had to see it clearly.”
“If ye hadn’t had to convince her to marry ye, I’d say she
bewitched ye mate.”
“That is the way of all those in love.”
“Good thing I’ll ne’er feel it aye?” They had laughed and made small talk. It had been the last time he had really seen
his friend. However shortly after the mutiny
the entire crew had become sick, and from what Jack had heard died. Even if Bill had survived the other pirates…
he was surly dead by now.
Then there was the boy down below. He was the dead ringer for his father… it made his heart
ache. This was the boy he had held
shortly after he had been born? This
was the baby that Bill had been so proud of?
What of Mary? She would have
killed him for his lusty thoughts. That
old bat always knew when he wanted something, then took great pleasure is not
letting him have it. The first time had
been with Bill. Jack had noticed that
to his trusted friend, he would only ever be a friend.
“Damn you Bootstrap.
I told you to stay home, but you needed the money. Was it worth your life?”
He had almost drunken himself into a stupor when he again
remembered the boy. He stood up and
with no swagger at all made his way downstairs.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Will was tired, hungry and totally alone with a pirate. Not just any pirate. A pirate who wanted into his breeches. Will refused to be taken advantage of… He
was an adult and would be treated like one.
“Damn it…. I’m starving.” He muttered under his breath. He was unaware that the sound carried and
reached the ears of the pirate.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Edward sat at his desk.
There was nothing he could do for his beloved but hope he picked the
right way to follow the scoundrel.
“Will.” He had not rested and
was exhausted. He fell asleep at his
desk and dreamed of the first night he had ever say Will.”
“Has he said anything?” Edward asked Ms. Swann.
She jumped and turned around. “His name is William Turner, that is all I found out.” He could tell she was hiding something
behind her back but he didn’t mention it.
“Take him below to my Cabin. He may use my bed until we arrive to Port Royal. I have a chair I can sleep on.” Three sailors carried the half drowned boy
to the Second in Commands room. There
the boy slept away the afternoon.
When Edward entered the room, the boy was awake and
sobbing into his knees. “Do you want to
talk about it?” The young boy jumped
and turned to face him. “Crying is not un
masculine. It’s fine to cry.”
“Do you cry?”
Came the small voice.
“I did. When my
parents died.” He took off his jacket
and pulled another blanket from a chest near the foot of the bed. “You may use my bed young Turner. I am used to sleeping in chairs. When we arrive at Port Royal we will search
for your parents…” Edward stopped speaking and then asked softly, “Were they on
the ship?”
“No sir, my mother died and I can not really remember my father. I was looking for him, and bought my passage
as a cabin boy. The Captain saved me
before he drowned.” The boy once again
sobbed for the loss of so many lives.
Edward did not know how to calm a distraught boy, but
wanted to try anyway. He sat down next
to him and held him as the boy sobbed into his chest. He held the crying boy for hours, even after Turner was
asleep. He remembered when his parents
had died; he had wanted to be held.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
From that night on Edward had been trying to make the boy
happy. Shortly after Will had become an
apprentice he had come to the blacksmith shop to see the boy. Will had been delighted to see him. With his innocence of youth, Will had told
Edward he loved him. Then with all the
boldness Will could muster the young mad had kissed him and ran back inside the
shop blushing red-hot.
