It took a while, but Brad finally warmed up to me and Alex. It surprised me that he was so protective. "Hey, I want to apologize for my behavior earlier, please understand it wasn't personal, but I hope once Missy explains everything, it will make more sense of why I acted the way I did towards you." He said. "No, I get it, this is all crazy shit, and I am so confuse,." I said as Missy came back into the diner.
"OK, so I'm going to explain a bit of this to you, you can take it as you will, or you can call me a crazy bitch, but what I'm about to tell you is true." She said, sitting down next to Brad as he took her hand. "Ludlow has always been a strange place, even clear back in the 1600s, people went missing, people died, came back from the dead. The Micmac Indians created the burial ground to bury their loved ones, but when the ground became foul, they stopped using it. As time passed, things started changing in our little town. People would die, only to come back days later." She said, "So the dead walk the earth?" I said, listening to her story. "That sounds like a Dawn of the Dead or zombie movie," Alex said.
"She's telling the truth, Ellie, I was in your class in Kindergarten, I watched this shit happen in 1992, I was 12, I watched a friend, friends of mine die and come back, if you take nothing from this but utter nonsense, please do some research, our town likes to keep things tucked into a neat little hidden box," Brad said. "How do we go about starting research?" Alex said. "Do not talk to the locals, they will be of no help, they tend to look the other direction, my best advice is contact Dr.Olanda he was the vet in the late 80's, and then Dr.Matthews who took over in 1992, they are the best ones to speak with, they would have more information than the locals, go to the library, look through the old newspapers, and I'm not sure if old man Manny Rivers is still alive in Bangor, but he was here in the 60's when Timmy Baterman reanimated and caused havoc on the town, he might be a good start" Missy said. "Missy, can I ask you something, and you be completely open and transparent with me?" I spoke. "Yes, what do you want to know?" Missy said.
"Did my mother come back as one of those things?" I asked. I saw the color drain from her face; the look had turned into fear. "Yes, Libby. Your mother did return as one of those things, that's a story for another day, I'm sure you girls are getting tired, it's almost midnight, if you wish we can get back together tomorrow, I closed the diner for the day to help you girls out with whatever it is you need." She said. "Why do you want us to start with the vets or former vets in town?" Alex asked. "Because it starts with the pet sematary, it's always the animals that come back before the humans, it's the family pets, then the family members," Missy said.
"OK, so do we want to meet here tomorrow morning around 7:00?" Missy asked. "Yeah, that sounds good, what do we do about the dumbass that's been stalking us?" I spoke.
Brad took us out the back door where our car sat, and the blue car was parked next to ours. Brad's face fell as he pushed us back towards the diner. "Missy, we have an issue, whoever that is, he or she is parked right next to their car." He said. "Do you have your motel room keys?" She asked. "Yeah, they are in my purse," I spoke. "OK, Brad and I will take you to the motel, and we will come get you tomorrow morning, or Brad can bring you the car later, hopefully once this asshole realizes the diner is closed and everyone has left, he or she will disappear," Missy said. "Why don't we just take their car back to our house, we can take it back to them in the morning, with it being a rental, I don't trust what this fuck head might do to it," Brad said. I reached into my purse and handed Brad the keys. "OK, Missy, take the girls out to the front, and once you leave, I will lock up and take off in their car.
We made our escape by ducking down in the back seat. Once we were far enough away from the diner, we sat up. "Missy, what do we do if he or she comes to the motel?" Alex asked. "Let me see who's working tonight. If it's Roger, then I can fill him in on what's going on." She said, pulling into the motel parking lot, pulling right in front of the hotel lobby.
"Hey Roger, we have an issue. These are my nieces, Libby and Alex. They are in town for a few days visiting me, and we have a stalker who has been seen multiple times today alone following them. How can you help?" She said, "Hi Missy, uh, we can take their names out of the guestbook, put them down as private pay, if someone comes in here asking for them, that's not you or Bradley, I will inform them, and get in contact with you or Brad." He said, speaking fast but to the point. "See, girls, I told you, just ask for Roger and tell them my name, he will help you." She spoke. Alex and I looked at each other as we walked out of the lobby. "Thanks, Aunt Missy. Please text me and let me know that you got home safe. I'm worried that the person might start following you if they realize we were stowaways in the back of your car." I said as she pulled up the stairs leading to our motel room. "I will call you after while, if you don't hear from me before 2, call me in the morning." She said before watching us walk up the stairs to our room. When we closed the room door, we saw her pull out of the parking lot.
Alex immediately dug into her cheese bites and her burger. I quickly went to take a shower. I was standing in the bathroom when there was a knock at the motel room door. Alex jumped. "Libby, get out here." She called quietly. "I threw my shirt on and walked into the room. Alex looked out the curtains but didn't see anyone standing there. I wasn't dealing with the bullshit. I opened the door to see a young man standing there. "Hi, I just wanted to knock on your door and tell you you have someone out here watching your motel room. I was going to inform the lobby clerk, but he wasn't at the front desk when I went in," the person said. "Oh, thank you. We know they have been following us around since yesterday. We're hoping my aunt and uncle can get to the bottom by morning and get them back off." I said, noticing his shy smile and quiet but protective demeanor. "I hope you girls have a nice night, and if you need anything, I'm in room 4A." He said as I thanked him and closed the door. Alex and I settled in for the night.
Just then, my phone lit up. "I made it back to my house, but on the way out here, the car was coming back in the opposite direction, so they caught on that you weren't driving the car, " she said. I told her about the gentleman who knocked on our motel room door; he was also looking out for us.
I finished my conversation with Missy before falling into a deep sleep. I woke up to Alex sitting in her bed, staring at me. "Libby, you are sleepwalking. Go back to bed, " she said before she got up and moved the heavy chair in front of the door, going back to sleep in front of the exit.
The following morning, we went down and talked to Roger with Missy. "So my nieces had a visitor last night, he knocked on their door to inform them that they were being watched and was even nice to give them his room number, so Rog, who's staying in room 4-A?" she said. "Um, let me look, I was sure no one checked in to any ground floor rooms." He said, going over his guest book. "No, there's no one in room 4-A." He said, giving us a scared look as we walked out of the motel lobby.
"Aunt Missy, then, who was watching our room?" I asked. I don't know, kid, but we're going to find out. Let's go meet Brad at the diner for some breakfast and jump into research, " she said, walking us to her car. "I don't see our stalker anywhere," I said before getting into Missy's front seat.
