Colt and Geri are quietly riding side by side through the city. The longest discussion they had was about where they were going to eat.
'This is awkward, when it shouldn't be awkward.' Thought Colt. 'I have nothing to say, but so much I wanna ask. I can't, though, it would be rude. Right? Right. Okay, then, silence it is.' Alas, that palm to the face had to happen, because his curiosity was an aggressive beast. "So... Not to keep pushing things, but.. We are dating dating. This isn't just some lunchtime-onetime kind of deal."
Geri glanced at him with furrowed brows then snickered.
Colt blanched. That response wasn't helping his nerves. "Because.. technically speaking, you said you'd like to go out with me. It wasn't an official set-in-stone yes yes... So are we?"
"We'll see." Replied the girl, mischievous sparkling in her eyes.
The nervous romantic squinted at her in mock impatient. "I never pegged you as the emotional S&M type. I'm gonna have to keep my guard up with you."
She shook her head. "I do wanna date you, but, date you. Coupling..." A sighed expelled through her nostrils. "We'll see."
"Why? You don't think I'm sincere?" He felt a little downtrodden because of that assumption.
"Not on your end; guys don't say what you'd said lightly about girls like me." She paused the pedaling and just let the bike cruise along. "It's everyone else. They're gonna bother you because of me, and bother me because of you. At some point one of us might drop the ball of not caring, and end up in a fight." Geri shrugged her shoulder. "We're gonna constantly feel watched; and at some point we'll break up, if only to spare each other's feelings from the madness of the crowd."
Colt realized this was going to be a lot harder than he thought. He honestly hadn't thought about it beyond wanting to date Geri. That was all he'd wanted. Fighting, defending, misunderstandings, none of that had crossed his mind. It made him like her all the more. He's rarely dated girls who think things through on a deeper level than a "yes" or "no" answer. Not since Jo, actually.
"I'm a ninja; anybody wants to fight with me, they'd better bring ice to nurse the bruises. And," he smile. "You're no slouch, either, if you could get a grip on me," his smile widened when hearing her laugh. "Physically, we're pretty scary; hecklers better watch out. Emotionally, I'll be there for you. And so will others."
Geri fell silent again. Not until they ended up at Wendy's did she find her voice. "Ok. Yes. Yes, I'll be your girlfriend."
"Alright!" He his hand turned into a fist and he pumped it with glee. He latched his bike to the stand along side his girlfriend's.
Geri looked at Colt's enthusiasm with amazement and amusement. She's never seen anyone so happy about dating her since the decision was underway. It was always fine and dandy, but the minute the guy learned the truth it was all revulsion, baseless fears, and violence. Guys don't mind short haired girls, but when they find out everything else it's a no go. But, watching Colt, she's beginning to think maybe not all guys are alike.
Colt held open the door for her, then stepped inside the cool restaurant. He wondered if that was a design strategy to bring in customers; blast them with AC so when the day is hot they can get that instant relief; the smell of food would naturally draw them to the counter. He took a whiff, it was an odd combination off-the-bat because he smelled burgers and a blast from Geri's perfume. He thought it was a bit like honey.
He rubbed his cheeks when they stepped into the line. 'I'm gonna have to watch out for property damages, smiling this much is painful.' Colt's gaze glanced down at Geri's lower back; asserting himself to the intimacy, he wrapped an arm around her waist and stepped closer behind her. He liked that he could feel the acceleration of her heart rate through her back, and wondered if she could feel his pick up as well.
"What would you like?" Asked the employee, looking from Geri to Colt. She figured them a couple, but not knowing if they were the independent type or type where the guy would order for the girl, she addressed them both visually.
"Asiago ranch combo and an oatmeal bar, please." Geri ordered.
"Big bacon cheddar combo." Colt added that they are dining-in then joined his girlfriend at a table in the center of the eatery. "Ger'," he lowered his voice. "I've been wondering, cause I've never dated someone in this situation before,"
"Ok..."
"Is it alright, if I have questions? I mean, you don't have to answer them, if if makes you uncomfortable."
"Questions are fine. I get them all the time. I won't answer if it makes me uncomfortable."
"Great! And you can ask me anything you like." He glanced when the counter called his number. "Be right back."
Geri wondered what in the world Colt thought she'd want to know, but then figured it was general questions of personality and interest. When the tray was set down, she rubbed her hands together. "Hello, delicious."
"Wanna share, we can split the burgers?"
"Okay."
They used a plastic fork between them to slice the burgers in half, then swapped with each other.
"Okay, because I'm really curious, but.." he gave a light nod of his head. "When you got... those, did you get to pick the size?"
To say Geri hadn't expected the question would be an understatement. She would have been less surprised if he'd asked whether or not she could sprout leather or feather wings at will. Bust size was a new one. "These are real; the hormones helped produce them."
Colt's eyes bugged out a bit.
Quoting a 90's sitcom, she said, "They're real, and they're spectacular."
Knowing said quotation, Colt chuckled. That to him was really interesting. Who knew?! "Asiago is hotter than I knew," he swallowed his burning saliva. "You can eat that?"
"Are you kidding? I love heat." She traded him back his half of sandwich, confiscating her own; no sense in torturing the guy. "Since we're on the subject; what's your favorite food?"
"Pizza. You?"
"Mmm... mac and cheese - - frozen bake kind, not so much from the shelf box."
"Sport?" He sipped his soda.
Biting her burger, she chewed then replied with a hand over her mouth. "Football to watch, basketball to play, and baseball for both."
Colt, who'd paused for a very longer sip, finally parted ways with his relief and answered for himself. "Basketball for both, football is ok, and who doesn't like both for baseball?" Biting a fry he added. "And I like hockey."
They ate their lunch in a comfortable silence for a bit, then Colt cleared his throat. It was killing him to know. So, he had to ask, and hoped Geri didn't categorize it as one of the questions she wouldn't answer.
"So, you had many boyfriends?"
"Four."
He coughed on his swallow, the liquid and food aimed for the wrong tube as he was about to gasp. "Four?! You've had four?"
"What? Too little, too much?" She reached over the table and patted his back.
Colt recovered, then replied. "I... But four? Really?"
"I am a living, breathing, teenager; I do have an interest in dating." Geri sounded like she was stating the obvious.
Colt was amazed. "Who? Anyone from around here?"
"No. Back at my old house, in another state." She finished her meal after the one last French fry. "It was never serious, just going out to movies or parties. The one guy who was serious, I dated for half a year. We kissed a lot, so I eventually had to tell him about me..."
Colt didn't like the pause.
"He basically became the reason my parents put me into self defense classes, and why Hector is so easily charged over male company."
"I don't blame him!" He lowered his voice. Getting up, as he had to do something, he grabbed their trash and threw it out like it was the creep who'd assaulted Geri. He met up with her at the exit, and they walked out together. Undoing the chain on his bike, he said in a huff. "I can see being a little upset from the reveal, but to beat you?"
Geri climbed onto her bike then followed her charged boyfriend's lead. "It's understandably shocking."
"Not enough to hurt someone."
"In no way am I saying it was right, nor that I forgive him; but, I do understand that sometimes a person can be too shocked by something and it causes a violent outburst."
"Tch."
"You've never been emotionally violent?"
"No. I..." he quieted. "Ok, yeah. I have. When you told me, I went home and hit my brother."
Brows furrowed, she asked. "Why?"
"Because he knew; and he knew you'd reject me... I thought he was making fun of me."
Stumped, she asked. "How did he know? I've never met your brother."
"You have. You just don't remember." He cruised along. "I showed him your photo that week we were going to see the movie."
"From where have we met?" She was genuinely perplexed.
"The Ethan Allen, when you got your new furniture back then." He stole a glance at her, glad to see that she still looked confused.
"I'll have to take your word for it."
Colt stopped. "Hey," he took her by the upper arm, leaned over and kissed her briefly on the side of her mouth.
"You're a well of emotions," was the response, though she looked pleased. "What was that for?"
"Joy over memory loss." He resumed pedaling. "If you know my brother, then you might end up liking him, and then you'll dump me."
"Ahaha, that's insane."
"You think that, but even I have to admit that girls find my brother charming. Last thing he needs is an edge; you already both like gaming - - and reading. He plays sports.."
Geri smiled. "I like this side of you; from what people say you're such a player. A lady-killer, and whatnot. I'd never have pegged you as insecure."
Colt scoffed. "My reputation is wrong. I do date a lot; and since I haven't found my 'forever', I haven't had any long relationships. Bobbie was the longest, we dated for two months. But, all those other girls were the same mindset as me. We were just enjoying each other's company."
Geri followed Colt up the driveway of his home. "Are we going inside?" She looked at the home. It's lovely. Very sculpted to the rest of the neighborhood. The only difference being the Douglas home has no flower bushes anywhere.
"Naah. I just wanna grab something, I'll be right out." He then asked. "Do you need the bathroom?"
"I'm good."
Colt nodded, then disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he held a basketball into view. "Hoops?" His hazel gaze looked down, suddenly taking in his girlfriend's attire. "Oh.. A skirt..."
Geri shook her head. "Culottes, and I'm wearing under-shorts, too." She raised the hem to show off some skin tight dancer-shorts.
"Great. Let's go."
The couple headed for the park. They spent an hour playing a game for head flicks or pecks on the lips, then parted ways for the day. When Colt arrived back home he was on Cloud 9. And after coming down, he packed up his personal bedding then returned to his shared bedroom.
"What did you get for number six?" Rocky asked through a tin can.
Anyone unfamiliar with the makeshift walkie talkie would have thought Rocky was crazy. But, the little handy project actually worked, connecting him fee-free with his childhood best friend, slash secret crush, slash off-and-on last resort date, Emily Hart.
"Thirty-two."
Rocky furrowed his brow. "I got twenty-eight."
"Well one of us needs to double-check his answer."
"She should, because I'm right."
Colt fixed his bedding, then turned to watch his brother.. play argue, for real argue.. It was hard to say what Rocky considered flirting, but whatever it was, he interrupted it by slipping the cover over the can of communication.
"Hey, I'm doing homework." Protest the older Douglas child. "Some of us actually still go to school, ya know."
"I wanted to tell you, I'm moving back in the room."
Rocky offered his brother a belligerent look. "Good for you."
"And, I'm not mad at you anymore." He took a seat on the bed.
"Goody-goody." He flicked his hand to shoo his brother away, but Colt remained. Rocky rolled his eyes; popped the lid from the can he says. "Emily, I'll get back to you. There's an annoying pest that won't leave me alone."
"Tell Colt I said, hi."
"Later." He covered the mock-phone.
Colt smiled mischeviously. "You don't have to say her name, she's the only one there."
Rocky popped his brother on the head with his hand. "What?"
All happy and carefree, Colt said with great cheer. "I forgive you, for not telling me. I understand now, why you didn't say anything."
Rocky looked skeptical, but was willing to go along with it to restore peace in the Douglas home; Colt doesn't know how close he came to a severe lecture from their father for missing school without a good enough reason,
"If you had told me, I would have been pissed at you, but I also would have been angry at Geri." He released a sigh. "Stupidly, not thinking clearly, angry. And that would have messed things up between us."
Rocky made an inward scoff. Nevermind the bridge Colt could have burned with him for slugging him, flying off the handle in his usual irate personality, and then acting like a delinquent missing school. Colt really can't handle feelings so well.
"You let me be mad at you, and that's really cool of you." Holding out his hand, he shook his brother's when it was taken. "Thank you,"
"Whatever." He replied good-naturally.
"And I'm sorry I hit you."
"Thank you."
"And said bad things about you behind your back." Seeing Rocky's elevated brows, he sighed in resignation. "And some to your face."
"Thank you. Apologly accepted." Rocky facial gestured to his homework. "Can I get back to work."
"Yeah, who's stopping you?" He stood. "Oh, and she said "yes"."
"To?"
"Us going out. Geri and me are dating now."
"Seriously? And you don't care about her 'fine print'?"
Colt beamed hard enough to expose his dimples. "That's the amazing thing; all the while I was angry and ready to strike, it dawned on me why." He gripped his brother's shoulder. "It was because I wasn't given a chance to be with her romantically and gradually accept it. That never crossed my mind as bothersome, after the initial shock, but who wouldn't be?"
Rocky smiled sincerely coming around to the interruption. "That's really mature of you Colt, I'm happy to hear that."
"Yup. I'm growing. Surprising myself more every day."
"Good for you. Now, beat it. Oh, you know what..." He pointed to the desk with his chin. "I'm a good guy, too. I brought your homework assignments for you."
Colt slumped down at their desk. "Rocky, don't be so nice to me next time."
Rocky shrugged then returned to his work, and study buddy.
Colt was about to open his math book when his phone rang. "Hello?"
"Colt, hey,"
"Hey. What's up?"
Geri paused then said. "We shouldn't tell anyone... about us."
"Why not?"
"Come on, I love that you're accepting, but I already told you why." Geri took in a breath. "I like you. And you may not know it, but I've had a crush on you for a while, but felt I had to keep you at arm's length."
He could understand that now.
"So, let's wait until we're stale between each other, then tell the other kids at school. Ok?"
"Yeah... Sure."
"Are you mad?"
"Me? No. No... um... I kinda told my brother.. is that o.k.?"
"Prince Charming? Yeah it's fine. I'm gonna tell my family, too."
"Great! I'll tell my little brother, too."
"Cool."
"Are you gonna tell Amy? If you do, do you think I should tell Troy?" Colt grimaced, as he was pretty sure Amy hates him. If getting cussed out and having the middle finger flashed at him meant anything. But, she's team Geri, and Geri likes him. So, she'll just have to suck it up.
"I'll feel her out."
"Me too."
"See you at school."
"You too... bye."
"Bye."
They hesitated but eventually hung up.
Rocky snickered in the background, muttering "Colt loves Geri" until he got an action figure launched at him. He caught it, of course, but the don't-tease-me was clear.
"Rocky, you can't tell anyone about us dating."
"I didn't plan to,"
"Good, cause, people tend to overreact with things like this, we're gonna wait."
"Sounded to me like you want to tell everyone."
"I do. I'm not embarrassed or anything, but, Geri is. So, I guess I have to suck it up."
Rocky furrowed his brows in concern. "Colt, seriously, you like her.. don't blow it. You've got a real bad habit of.."
Colt glared. "I swear, if you say Colting-it-up, I'm gonna throw a kunai."
Rocky held up his hands. "I was going to say doing things accidently on purpose. So, do as she asked and just be cool."
Colt would have said something smart about that, but stayed silent. Maybe he does have such habits. He decided to nix homework for a moment, and instead wrote down a list of topics to keep himself free and clear of pauses that might have him going public unintentionally. It should work.. Shouldn't it?
