Chapter Four
Serial Killer
My breakup with Lucy wasn’t as clean as I thought it should have been. I told her not to call me but she did and when I didn’t answer she sought me out after one of my classes. It had only been two days.
“Tobias!” she called across the parking lot. I was walking to another class that wasn’t due to start for another two hours but, I kept walking.
“Tobias, wait!” I didn’t heed at all and made her run to catch up to me. She decided to cut me off but I swerved around her and kept walking. “Would you hang on a sec?” She trotted up next to me and matched my pace. I was walking leisurely, in no hurry at all and I made it a point to keep walking that slow. I knew what was coming next.
“Will you at least listen?” she asked as we walked.
“I’ll listen,” I said casually and I could see her smile out of the corner of my eye.
“I don’t want to break up,” she said suddenly. I knew it was part of a speech, she didn’t want to break up and she was sorry for what she did.
“I didn’t know you wanted to…” she let her words trail off at the mention of sex to see if I would bite but I didn’t.
I decided to cut her speech short and save her the breath of trying to convince me to take her back. “Lucy,” I said and I glanced at her. When I saw the glimmer of hope in her eyes I started to regret what I was about to do.
My feet came to a stop but I moved off of the sidewalk onto the grass next to it so others could still pass. Lucy followed me and stood in front of me when I finally stilled.
“I had four girlfriends before you,” I started and she shrank back a little. “But, I’m still a virgin.” Confusion clouded her green eyes as her head tilted to the side and made her brown curls fall over one shoulder. Her freckles moved as her brow furrowed and the only thing I could think about was how beautiful she was and how I was going to miss her. “It’s because the same thing has happened four times,” I said plainly.
Her head leaned back and turned slightly to the side as if I had just accused her of something and I was. I was accusing her of being the same as every other girl I dated because she was. “I’m not going to take you back because I know in ten years, after we get married, I’d see the same scene again but in our house.” I emphasized ‘our’ so she would know just how far ahead I had seen our relationship go.
“Toby,” she whispered and I ignored her affectionate nick name. “I…I want to be with you,” she said and she came close, putting her hands on my chest. Before she could speak again I put a finger to her lips. No doubt she was picturing me leaning down and kissing her but I had a nasty surprise instead.
“You had needs, right?” I said softly. I did lean down a little because I did want to see her hurt, I wanted to finally see one of the girls get hurt by me instead of me getting hurt by them.
She nodded slowly and tears started to come to her eyes. “I didn’t want to push,” I said setting her up.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, it was my fault,” she breathed while trying to fix the collar of my grey polo shirt.
“It is your fault,” I said in the same tone. It didn’t register at first but when it did her hands stopped moving and she looked up at me. “It’s your fault for not telling me you were ready, it’s your fault for not taking the initiative, it’s your fault for cheating on me.”
“But-”
I cut her off again with a raised finger. “It’s your fault for not masturbating and waiting for me when I was ready,” I said a little harshly. I leaned down to her level and looked her dead in the eye. “Cut your losses, I have.” I straightened and continued to walk to my next class.
I didn’t hear her feet follow me.
I was distracted the entire class time and barely heard a word the teacher said. Before class I sat in the downstairs coffee shop and watched the sunset. I focused on the colors of the sky and the taste of my iced mocha with vanilla. When class time came I walked numbly up the stairs and when I finally sat down I stared out the window into the blackness of night.
Stupid night class, I thought to myself as the instructor announced the end of class, finally releasing us.
“And I’ll see you next week,” he said as we all stood to leave. I made the mistake of sitting in the back of class so I was one of the last ones out. “Tobias, wait a second?” he asked as he put a few papers into his briefcase.
Stupid, Tobias, stupid, I scolded myself.
“Are you feeling okay?” he asked when he was ready to go.
“Fine, Mr. Himburg,” I replied as coolly as I could.
“You usually pay attention in class,” he said. He looked over his glasses at me and I let my face show my feelings. I was drained, tired and mildly in pain.
“Just had a breakup,” I said quietly and he immediately backed off.
“Sorry to hear that.” He gave me a hand on the shoulder and led me out of the classroom. “Just remember, there are plenty of fish in the sea.” He gave me a smile and a nod before leaving for the elevator.
It would be easier to date a fish, I thought to myself. “Much easier,” I said to no one.
The night air was hot and humid, too sticky and uncomfortable for my taste but it didn’t make me walk any faster. My night class was close to my apartment and even if it rained I enjoyed walking home.
I should have been more aware and paid better attention to my surroundings. Usually I was pretty alert and I would have avoided the guys if I had seen them in time.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” I heard an unfamiliar voice say. I looked up to see three men walking towards me. All of them were African-American and all were dressed in baggie clothes despite the intense heat. I didn’t see any defining marks like gang symbols or tattoos; they must have just been local thugs looking for easy pickings.
The man who spoke was in the center and stood a little taller than me; his boys were about my height and build. I was surprised they did decide to pick on me but then again, there were three of them and one of me.
Never had I experienced or even heard of someone getting robbed on campus before. Guess there’s a first for everything, I thought bitterly. Also a perfect end to a perfect evening, I just wish I had money to give them. I had left my card at home and only took a five with me to get an iced coffee; I knew I could run home and grab the card if I needed to.
The big man stepped in front of me and his boys followed silent cues and blocked my back. They were taking their time surrounding me and it only made me feel more afraid than I was pretending not to be. I could feel my heart pound in my chest and I was silently grateful they couldn’t smell fear.
“Tough man?” he asked as he prodded my chest with a finger. I shook my head slowly and allowed my pack to be thrown to the ground by one of his goons. “Money,” he said after glaring at me carefully. I put my hands up and let his boys rummage my pockets.
“You serious?” I heard from behind me. “Just some change, boss,” and I heard my coins falling to the ground.
“Poor college student,” I said to try and wiggle out of my predicament.
“No card?” he asked and I felt my wallet get taken out of my back pocket.
“No, boss,” the other guy said.
The man’s face twisted into a mild anger as I shrugged. The worst thing they could do was leave me and go to the address on my driver’s license but it wasn’t updated. They would end up going to my aunt and uncle’s house and rob the wrong people.
But he didn’t have robbing on the mind anymore.
“Then we’ll have some fun,” he said leaning into me and giving me a threatening glare. I tried to stay still and be ready but when I saw the flash of a knife in the streetlamp light I almost pissed myself.
Instead of the boss man stabbing me I was hit from behind and fell to my hands and knees. I was dizzy and didn’t see the foot coming in for my ribs otherwise I would have crumpled into a ball.
Another foot came in and hit me from the other side and then fists followed. I tried to ball up as best I could and take the hits while protecting my head but it was no use. A foot found a hole in my defense and kicked me in the face making me sprawl out into a very vulnerable position.
Boss man was standing over me, smiling and rotating his shiny blade for me to see. I lied there, bruised, hurt, broken. I didn’t even try to form a plan to escape; I tried to look like I was ready for him to come in and that made him hesitate.
That hesitation saved my life or, at least I thought it did.
I heard a sickening crunch then gurgling and tried to look over my shoulder. My left eye had swollen shut, I couldn’t see what was going on but one guy screamed and I thought I heard him run away but there was another crunch and more gurgling. Blood started to run into my other eye as I struggled to sit up to see what was going on.
The boss man was freaking out, shouting and spinning around; I could see his knife flicker in and out of my vision as he turned frantically looking in every direction.
I made it to my knees when I heard the knife hit the ground and the guy start to panic. I looked up just in time to see him go crashing to the ground, I assumed unconscious. The blood in my eye made it hard to see anything at all and I took the hand offered to me when I saw the shape.
“Thanks for-”
Oh, Jesus, my brain kept saying over and over again as I came to. My head felt like it had been smashed in and my face hurt even worse. Dizziness made it impossible for me to sit up and the pain blinded me.Insufferable heat seeped into my lungs as I breathed and it was only made worse by a thick blanket covering me. I gingerly brought a hand up to my left eye to see how bad the damage was but my wrist was grabbed lightly by a large hand.
“Rest,” a voice rumbled somewhere near me and I did as I was told.
Pain still wracked my head and then my body when I woke up again. My left eye was still swollen shut and my right eye remained blurry as I tried to blink and clear my sight. Dizziness threatened to pitch me as I rolled over on a soft bed to get my bearings. There was no hand when I tenderly reached a hand up to feel my left eye for the second time.
At first I was scared because I felt something covering it then when I realized it was a patch I breathed a sigh of relief. My ribs complained as I tried to sit up and the back of my head told me to stay still until the pain went away. I rolled back over and lied flat on my back to stare at the ceiling.
Blinking a few more times my sight cleared. The light was dim, so dim I almost couldn’t see but thanks to the red tint I could make out lines here and there. I thought it was a pair of red curtains that tinted the light red…until I did finally sit up.
Fear started to seep into my gut as my good eye slowly scanned the room. The red light was coming from some unknown place, there were no windows, the walls were decorated in some weird curving design and the last wall…I almost pissed myself. The last wall had bone white things hanging on it tinted red by the light. They looked like skulls, all of them were large, had eye sockets and had teeth. There were even a few human shaped skulls.
Please be some crazy guy into costumes and props, I pleaded to myself.
The door opened and brighter light poured around a silhouetted figure. I froze on the bed in a position I thought I could leap from to dash out the door.
To my demise I stayed frozen in place. Heavy footsteps thudded into the darkened room and when he was close enough I saw a slight shine come off of a giant metal mask. My mouth stayed glued shut as he came closer then paused. I swallowed the lump in my throat not knowing what to expect.
“Rest,” he rumbled at me and he raised a hand as if to say ‘stay put’ or ‘lie down’.
“Who…who are you?” I asked quietly. I was surprised I had found my voice at all and it gave me a little confidence when I spoke.
“…Friend,” he replied in that same deep rumble.
“Where am I?” I said with halting hesitation. His head tilted to one side and a large amount of what looked like hair fell over his shoulder. The darkness made it hard to see any details and the light from the door made it even harder to see the front of him.
“…Safe,” he finally said before putting his hand up again. “Rest.”
I didn’t feel like resting anymore and I needed to use the bathroom. Wait until he leaves, I told myself and I lied back to do just that.
He left the room and as soon as the door closed I swung my legs over the bed but paused. The ground was covered in swirling fog.
Crazy guy must really be into costumes, I thought as I stood. The skulls on the wall next to the door started to creep me out and caused me to look around the room again. There weren’t any windows and the dull lighting was starting to give me a headache. I looked to the wall that the bed was on and saw a door in the corner.
Maybe it’s the master suite?
The floor was warm as I walked to the door and as soon as I took a deep breath my lungs complained at me. The air was thick, hot, wreaked, and was humid as hell. Standing on my tip toes made it only slightly better but it was comforting. The door was metal and didn’t have a handle; there were lights that looked like buttons at shoulder level. I wasn’t sure I wanted to open the door, for the moment I was relatively cool and calm, if I found one more weird thing I would know something was wrong.
There was a slight hiss as the door opened and revealed what could only be described as a urinal. It looked like metal and had a dull shine to it. I ignored the rest of the details and stepped right up to relieve myself. After I was done I poked around until I hit a button and ‘flushed’, which sounded like an airplane toilet.
Time to find that guy and get the hell out of here.
I walked back into the room and up to the door the guy had used but when I pushed the buttons it didn’t open. There was more than one button so I poked a few more but still nothing happened.
That was when I started to feel dread pool in the pit of my stomach.
“Hello?” I called timidly. When there was no answer I called again but louder. There was still no answer and that was when I started to panic. The air kept my tirade of banging on the door and yelling short, it was too hard to breathe and I ended up coughing and sitting on the bed wondering what was going to happen to me.
A mechanical whir made my head snap up to stare at the far wall away from the door. For a split second I thought more gas was pouring into the room but that wasn’t the case, a window was opening.
At first I didn’t realize what I was looking at. It didn’t make sense to open a window to a poster…
If I hadn’t already used the bathroom I would have peed myself. Instead I started to shake; small tremors started in my hands then they spread to the rest of my body. My brain already knew what I was looking at but I just couldn’t believe it. There was no way it was real.
Earth, that beautiful, flawless globe you see in space shuttle photographs was staring at me, I could see it rotate as I moved away from it; the moon came into view seconds later and that just made the shaking worse.
No…no…no, no, no! “No, no no!” I threw myself at the window and pounded on it like a crazy man. “This can’t be real!”
A coughing fit put me back in my place as I fell to my knees into the fog where it was even harder to breathe. I crawled and stumbled back to the bed to get my head above the dense air. My head was swirling with endless possibilities and dizziness. I didn’t even know that guy had come back in the room.
When I did catch movement out of the corner of my eye I spazzed out, he was most certainly not my friend.
“Where am I?!” I shouted at him. It was all I could muster at that moment; my lungs were laboring against the heavy air and my refusal to calm down. He tried to come closer to me but I crawled over the bed to get away. There was a sudden growl from what sounded like an angry dog and I had to freeze. I couldn’t see the animal in the room with us but I didn’t want to get blindsided by teeth.
“Safe,” he said again but that just made me panic more.
“The hell I am! Who are you?!” I was long past the calm phase and was getting hysterical. The strange air, skulls on the wall-
Oh, my, God! I glanced at the wall of skulls again and saw four or five human skulls in clearer, gory detail, they were entirely real but I wasn’t going to join them.
The door! It was open, normal looking light was pouring through, did he know? I glanced at him but his mask hid his eyes. I didn’t know how well he could see me but I decided to take a chance.
The view I got of ‘outside’ could have been a trick, something to make me stare in awe, lose hope, something. I could really be in some warehouse on the wrong side of town with a crazy fuck looking for his next kill.
I wasn’t going to be next.
My survival instincts finally kicked in as the guy tried to come around the bed and block my path. I lunged at the door and threw myself into the wall. The light hurt my eyes and I couldn’t get a good view of where I wanted to go next; I heard that animal growl again and high tailed it in one direction.
A door with buttons was at the end of the hall and I pounded on them all until it opened. I didn’t even look inside but once I was in there I realized it was an elevator. The guy jumped into the hallway and looked one way then at me. I pounded on more buttons and the doors started to close but not before he came running at me.
“Jesus!” The doors closed just as he smashed into them, that animal growl even louder than before. I could hear him pounding on the doors as I traveled down, hopefully to the ground level. I sank to the floor trying to catch my breath and think of what I could do next to get out alive. There had to be stairs and he had to flying down them to intercept me, if I was quick enough I could find a window and climb out of the hellhole I was in.
The doors opened and I quietly got up and stuck my head out. There was a vehicle of some kind parked in the middle of the room with the same dull light shining from God knew where. I looked at the walls but didn’t see any windows, not even the fake space ones. The darkness made me pause, not wanting to move forward. I did anyways, trying to figure out if I could use anything to my advantage.
A sudden noise spun me around and I barely had time to get my feet moving before he was on me. I ran to the back of the room and hit the wall before rolling off of it and stumbling around the vehicle. That animal growl increased in volume as the guy neared and almost like a light bulb going off I realized that it wasn’t an animal making that noise, it was him.
It didn’t comfort me as I ran back to the elevator only to be cut off. I tried to backpedal but only succeeded in falling on my ass. I scrambled backwards as he stalked toward me, my heart was racing in my throat, my muscles tried to freeze themselves in fear but I kept pushing back.
He got too close and I knew I couldn’t get away. His speed surprised me as his arm shot out and grabbed me by the throat. I clasped onto his hand only to find it too warm and not soft like my own skin.
Horror filled my features and froze my body as I was lifted off the ground, my feet dangling, my hands trying to relieve some of my own weight. I kicked a few times but it didn’t even faze him. It wasn’t until the prick I felt in my shoulder that I realized that I was going to die.
