DISCLAIMER II: Some things in this Chapter were very slightly drawn from memories of reading Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden as a child. Though She is Has Long Departed this Earth. I acknowledge whatever certain elements I got for inspiration from reading that wonderful book to Frances Hodgson Burnett Herself. I am only borrowing those certain elements for fun.
Waltzing with yet another nobleman Moonchild's keen eyes saw her very best friend leap up from his seat in the corner and stealthily but hurriedly slip out of the Ballroom. Something very disturbing was troubling him...She could sense it...
As soon as the waltz ended The Empress graciously bowed to her partner and before another could take his place, she left the circle. Pretending to tend to her thirst she accepted a glass of champagne-even though she hated the stuff-from a passing servant and, while delicately choking down sips of the sour liquid, Moonchild made her way across the grand room, all the while keeping an eye our for Carion or Brijatte. Seeing neither of them-her gut told her they were no longer in the room but in the Royal Kitchens making sure things there went smoothly-The Empress of Fantasia, too slipped out of the Ballroom, unnoticed by her laughing, talking, indulgent guests and followed the same path as Atreyu, anxious to locate him and soothe whatever was making him so distressed.
. . . . .
The night air was cool on Moonchild's face as she hurriedly made her way though the Royal Gardens with only soft light emanating from both the moon above as well as the vast array of lamps carefully hidden throughout the many arrangements of flowerbeds, hedges-both carved as well as regular-along with a few that were threaded amongst the branches of all sorts of trees. She dodged a fine mist of water as it spontaneously shot up and out from a nearby fountain carved to portray a groups of Fawns blowing trumpets. It was from these instraments the spouts of water had emerged from. Due to soft yet dim light in this part of the Gardens along with the fact she had to abruptly step aside so as to not get sprayed with water, the slightly raised heel of the Empress's left shoe caught itself upon a vine lying in the middle of the path. Biting back a yelp of surprise, Moonchild stumbled, then hopped about for a moment, trying to disentangle her shoe from the vine.
"Oh, these damned shoes!" she swore to herself. Frustrated, The Empress balanced like an acrobat on one foot at a time and promptly removed her heeled shoes. "Gods, How I hate these fucking things..."
Carrying the pair of foot offenders by their backs, she resumed her frantic search for Atreyu, growing more and more worried as the minutes passed. Her feet, now free of their restraints, made no sound at all even through the slight burning she could feel on the soles and bottoms of them Moonchild had a feeling she was going to end up with blisters by morning from the ridiculous footwear Brijatte had pressured her into wearing for the Ball.
'Oh, Atreyu, Where are you?' Her mind cried out with concern as she fought back tears of worry. There was a deep aching feeling clenching her beating heart and something deep in her soul told her it was coming from whatever emotional pain the Buffalo Hunter was feeling at that very moment. Two tiny tears, one from each eye, crept from their corners and trailed down her cheekbones as she turned her head this way and that, peering into each and every nook and cranny of the Gardens, her desperation growing with every step she took. The darkness of the night grew deeper and deeper as The Empress made her way farther and farther into the Royal Gardens until the lanterns were no more and the only light she had to go by was that of the soft, full moon in a clear Fantasian sky.
Ahead of her, a thatch of moonlight shone down upon a wide circle of flowerbeds. Row after row of strategically arranged flowers formed a breathtaking circular rainbow, their petals shimmering in the pale moonlight. Though this was not the Heart of the Royal Gardens Moonchild knew several paths branched out from this rainbow circle of flowers. Each leading its own path into a different and even deeper part of the Gardens. Here, The Empress stopped for a moment to not only rest but to collect her thoughts so she could figure out which way she should go now.
Letting her eyes close The Empress tilted her head towards the Heavens. Lips slightly parted, she breathed deeply in and out, in and out as she concentrated. Focusing all of her Inner Senses on Atreyu she stood there, arms hanging loosely at her sides, barefoot in the Royal Gardens of the Ivory Tower, moonlight bathing her in its soft light, making her seem even more ethereal then she already was, she let her mind spin around and around as if it were a compass. After what seemed like hours but in reality was only minutes, her eyes opened. She could see him clearly in her mind's eye. He was hidden, deep, deep in the Gardens though she as of yet she did not know the precise location. But she DID know which way to go and what path she should take.
As if an invisible magnet was pulling her heart forward, The Empress of Fantasia slowly turned to her left and let her feet silently carry her down the cool, winding path drawing her deeper into the darkness of the Gardens as it lead her towards her destination.
After several more minutes and several twist and turns, her shoeless hand brushed against a hanging cluster of leaves hidden alongside a wide hedge that made up a wall of one of the mazes at one of the farthest parts of the Gardens.
'Stop' Her mind whispered. The Empress obeyed. 'He's here...' it whispered 'He's hiding here...'
As if her body had a mind of its own, Moonchild turned to face the thick blanket of leaves on her right hand side. She looked the hedge up and down carefully examining it all the while her fingertips ran lightly over the curtain of leaves embedded into the hedge. Something told her that no one-except maybe a semi-annual Royal Gardener to trim the edges of the hedges-came to this part of the maze-let alone this part of the Gardens very often, if at all. The thickness and wildness of this part of the maze seemed to be too much trouble for regular maintenance.
'How long has this mass of leaves been here?...' she wondered 'Has it always been here and I just never seemed to notice it?...' Her fingers tentatively prodded the leaves with a strange curiosity she could not explain. Even to herself. 'I wonder if I...'
But she never finished the thought. For as if her subconscious mind were a guide, she let her shoes fall to the ground where the hedge seemed to absorb them into its darkness, as both of her hands now moved themselves from the edges of the hidden rectangular mass of leaves to the middle, where instinctively, they carefully pushed themselves forward. To her surprise, Moonchild realized she was feeling not only more leaves but what felt like wood beneath her palms. Quickly as though she'd carelessly touched a candle flame she drew back, breathing heard, heart pounding.
'Go on...' she told herself 'See what's beyond...Remember, Somewhere, beyond all this, Atreyu is there...Alone and suffering some emotional turmoil...'
As this thought of her Hunter dealing with his emotional agony all on his own passed over her heart, making it ache even more, The Empress purposefully moved forward, thrust her hands through the tightly woven mass of leaves and flattened both palms against what she now confirmed to herself was indeed wood. Not smooth, sanded wood, nor rough wood full of splinters ready to stick themselves into your skin, but something in between. The wood she felt was slightly smooth in some places yet slightly roughened in others-as if from many, many, many seasons of weather. Yet...it did not feel as if it was so old and beaten it was halfway to falling apart when handled. Quite the Contrary. This wood felt sturdy like an old tree with roots and bark so maintained by Mother Nature that not even the wrath of All the Gods and Goddesses nor a recurrence of the Nothing could or would tear it to the ground.
'If I could only...'
As if they could hear her thoughts and feel her feelings, both sides of this Great Leaf-Curtain noiselessly parted of their own accord, revealing what looked like a slab of dark green wood that reached nearly halfway up the fifteen-foot high hedge. The wood was such a dark shade of green it looked black in the darkness. Even if the leaf-curtain wasn't there, this rectangular wooden slab would be indistinguishable even to the keenest eye. Leaning forward to examine the wood more closely, Moonchild searched for a keyhole, a doorknob... Somehow she knew this was a door leading to whatever was beyond... But neither were to be found. The Empress felt a light breeze whisper past her ears, as if it were telling her to lean up against this 'door' just a bit. She did this. Once Again, as if Mother Nature were the go-between her and the hedge, the 'door' soundlessly moved a teeny bit beneath her small weight. Stepping back yet this time used only one hand to press firmly against the wood. It moved inwards a bit more, still without releasing a single Creak or scraping noise upon the smooth, dark footpath of the maze. Now there was just enough room between the edges of the 'door' and the hedge for her to easily slip though.
Brushing strands of wind-blown hair away from her face and shoulders, The Empress eased her way though the door. The moment she took this action, the 'door' closed itself behind her.
The Curtain of Leaves fell seamlessly, silently, back into its former place as if nothing had disturbed it.
Leaning against the other side of the 'door' she'd just come through, Moonchild took a moment or two to take in the surroundings. What lay before her took even her breath away:
As if created by The Most Creative, Delicate Hands of Nature, was a Garden.
Not just ANY garden mind you, This garden was a patchwork of clusters of flowers of every imaginable kind. Roses mixed with carnations wound there way up the inner walls of the hedge only stopping a few feet from the top. The scent of sweet Magnolia bushes lining the edge of the hedge intermingled themselves with the scent from the roses and carnations above. To the left side of The Empress, vast fields of assorted wildflowers of whose names Moonchild did not know stretched for what seemed like miles and looked to be at least knee-deep. To her right side, inserting themselves among the magnolia, carnation, and rosebushes, were gnarled trees that looked as if they'd been there for centuries. Their branches-also stopping at least five feet from the top of the hedge-seemed to intertwine with one another while at the same time some of the rosebushes had grown to embed themselves upon the twisting trunks of the trees, as if the these two things of Nature were one being. Straight ahead of what was a smooth dirt path Moonchild could see that the tops of several treetops interwoven together, forming an archway standing no more then six and a half feet tall. The tunnel beyond it, made up of even more gnarled interlocked tree-branches was of the same height as the archway but was about fifty or a hundred feet deep. She could see moonlight where the tunnel ended.
'He's there...beyond that tunnel...I don't know how. But Something's telling me I'll find him at the end of that tunnel of trees...'
As if Atreyu's inner spirit was guiding her to him, she made her way down the weaving naturally packed-dirt pathway and passed through the archway.
The Tree-Tunnel was much darker then the rest of the Garden due to the natural roof of interwound tree-branches. Still, Moonchild could see strips of moonlight threading its way here and there through tiny patches of interlocked treetops on either side of the tunnel. This gave her just enough light to see where she was going. Soft rustlings of animals, who made their homes in these branches and trunks of the tree-tunnel, could be faintly heard as they stirred in their sleep. Every now and then the silence was broken by the low Hoot-Hoot of an owl. All this gave Moonchild comfort for it made this whole secret garden seem less desolate.
At last she came to the other side of the tunnel. Moonchild estimated that it took all of fifteen minutes walking. If One had been running it would take five minutes from one end of the tunnel to the other. Placing her hand upon a trunk, she paused for a moment to rub her aching feet. They were still sore from those fucking shoes she had to be in all night and even though the packed dirt beneath her was firm it was soft to the touch. Nevertheless it didn't do much to ease the throbbing and burning of her poor feet.
'I'm going to fucking kill Brijatte for putting my feet through such torture tonight! She KNOWS hard and heeled shoes murder my feet! But does she care about how I feel!? Noooo! All she cares about is whether 'Her Empress' looks like a fucking china doll ready to be put on display of a store window or not!'
When the burning and throbbing in her ankles and soles subsided enough for her to stand comfortably without wincing, Moonchild pushed herself away from the trunk and moved to stand just beyond the edge of the archway that marked the end of the tunnel, where she peered out to the lush landscape laid out before her.
This part of the Garden seemed to be more woodsy then from where she had entered through the wooden 'door.' Though it was open to the sky it seemed to have more trees and berry bushes rather then flowerbeds and wildflower fields. Instead of tall walls of hedges bordering this part of the Garden, tall walls of shimmering rock enclosed these boarders. Moonchild looked up, her gaze following these gigantic rock walls that seemed to shimmer like diamonds and crystals in the moonlight as they stretched towards the heavens.
With a jolt of shock, Moonchild realized what she was looking at: These walls were not just any rock walls. They were a section of the inner mountain that enveloped the Ivory Tower!
'My Gods...How could I have not known!?... I've lived here for as long as I can remember and in all these centuries there has Never been an inkling from my Senses letting me know this Garden was here...Hidden from everyone and possibly everything! But wait...' she told herself. 'Maybe...Just Maybe this Secret Garden was waiting for the right time and circumstances to reveal itself to me...and Atreyu... Maybe the Garden sensed his desperate need to be hidden away and revealed itself to him. Then it closed itself up again until it sensed my presence and somehow KNEW I was looking for him before revealing itself to me. Perhaps, in some strange way,,,,,a way that only Nature knows of...It knows of the depth of our feelings for each other and as a gift to us offered itself as a haven...a place where we can come and just be our true selves without fear of being ridiculed, judged or ashamed for loving one another as very best friends if not more then that.'
Deep in her soul The Empress knew this analysis was correct and it comforted her as she knew it would comfort Atreyu once she told him. She also had a good, but funny feeling that this Secret Garden would provide them with whatever It thought they needed. As if some special Magic known only to Mother Nature and gifted only to them for It felt as if they worthy of this place due to their honest bravery and kindness they had given Fantasia's natural world. This Garden would watch over them like a Guardian Angel The Gods had sent to protect, provide and nurture the deep friendship and love for each other. Like a cherished pair of flowers, Moonchild knew this Hidden Place would help them grow together from the very best of friends to lovers and beyond in safety, peace and privacy.
A soft Quack-Quack directed her attention from the glittering mountain walls to a pond some feet away where a family of ducks quacked softly in their sleep. Now that her gaze was no longer skywards Moonchild stepped forth to survey this new part of what would be her and Atreyu's haven. The softness of short green grass tickled her feet the moment she stepped out of the tunnel. Looking down she saw that the main garden path had gone from packed dirt to very short lush green grass. As she followed the path the delicious smell of all kinds of fresh wild berries reached her nostrils while the soft bubbling sound of water from small fountains, no doubt created by nothing more then Nature Itself as well as shallow streams brought their own soothing music to her ears as they wound their way through this Secret Garden of Nature. Sensing this wonderful haven held more wondrous secrets and treats for them to discover and enjoy, Moonchild decided to wait until she located Atreyu and found out why he looked so upset as he fled from the Ballroom first. They would save the exploration of the Garden for another day or night. Now was not the time to do so.
As if it knew the moment was right for Atreyu's hiding place to be revealed, the night breeze blew softly past her to rustle the long sweeping branches of a pair of willow trees to her far left. It gracefully lifted the curtain of leaves on their branches to reveal an even smaller garden. This one contained only a small amount of flowerbeds, three or four at most, growing wildly along the edges of a medium-sized square of smooth rock. Six or eight trees, some Willows, others were of a name she did not know-These trees had different petals on them as well as leaves, some were white, some a soft pink others were of a soft red color-were growing very close together in a circle.
And There, leaning against one of the farthermost tree trunks, his back towards her. was Atreyu.
Moonchild's heart nearly broke as she looked upon her very best friend. His bowed head was resting against one forearm up against the trunk. His face was hidden by his hair, now loose from their bindings, while his other arm hung limply at his side. The Empress stayed perfectly still on the other side of the curtain of willow branches This was not the time to disturb him. She'd wait and let Atreyu discover her on his own.
, , , ,
Someone was watching him. The prickling hairs on the back of his neck told him so. Rubbing his eyes against his forearm to get rid of the silent tears still lingering, he slowly raised his head and for the second time that night, he looked over his shoulder.
At first he thought he was seeing things. That the moonlight combined with the gentle swaying of the willow tree branches behind him were playing tricks on him.
No, It couldn't be... It was like Deja Vu...
For a moment he swore he could have seen the silhouette of The Empress of Fantasia standing there just beyond the other side of the willow trees...
Atreyu rubbed his eyes again, certain there were still some unshead tears blinding him or at the very least clouding his vision.
But, No. When he looked a second time she was still there. Standing perfectly still, Like an angel sent down from Father Sky to bring peace to his aching heart.
When the breeze parted the curtain of willow branches yet again, Atreyu saw she'd taken that moment to step through them, the Willow-Curtain falling gracefully behind her.
Atreyu's throat, already raw from coughing and nearly choking on many rivers of silent tears that had come so hard and fast, one right after the other, they made his whole body shake as if he had the chills, closed up. Words failed him as he stared at The Empress and she, her beautiful eyes filled with so much love and concern it nearly broke his heart, looked right back at him. Peering through his eyes and right into the very depths of his soul.
"Atreyu..." Her voice was soft, like a nightingale. "Oh, Gods..."
Then she was there. Standing in front of him. Looking up into his agonized face, Her eyes mirrored the pain he'd been feeling for the past half-hour or so, though she did not know the reason why.
"What is it?'" One finger came up to brush a stray hair off his cheek, feeling the rough patch where tears had dried there. "Whats wrong? Please tell me." Her gaze fixaited themselves on his dark eyes, now slightly red but not puffy, from crying, searching for the answers her beloved was unable to voice to at the moment. "It was the noblemen Carion forced me to dance with at the Ball tonight wasn't it?'" Her own voice nearly cracked at what must have gone through Atreyu's mind as he had watched her reluctantly dance with the nobility this night, They both knew that though her movements were graceful as always, her heart was not in it as it had been when they'd shared that First Waltz together in front of a whole ballroomfull of Fantaisan Nobility-including a shell-shocked Cairon.
Atreyu nodded.
Moonchild watched him turn away from her and move towards a long, low, wide slab of rust-colored rock that looked as if it could have been a bench. Her troubled eyes followed his every movement as he sank down upon it. His elbows resting on his knees, his head bowed once more, this time resting against the edges of his hands loosely interlocked together.
Atreyu just sat there for several long moments. His heart was in too much pain to say much of anything. But She Knew. She may not yet know the details but still, She Knew. She had read it in his eyes for his soul had been bared to her the second she looked into them a few moments ago.
He felt her hand tentatively touch the top of his bowed head, He didn't have to look up to know she was standing there in front of him. Soft fingertips from her other hand hesitantly caressed his tear-stained face. A moment later Atreyu felt himself fall forward enough so that his forehead was now resting upon the area just below her breasts. Moonchild stepped a few inches more towards him. Wordlessly she tenderly cradled his head in her arms. Her tender hands never ceasing their comforting dance as they continued to ligtly run themselves over his head, soft fingers running themselves through his long hair and along the cheek that was now pressed against her body. Eyes closed, Atreyu felt his arms wrap themselves around the back of her legs gently tugging her closer to him, his head never leaving their resting place just below and between her small breasts, as she soundlessly comforted him and mended his aching heart.
"When I saw Cairon forcing you to waltz with one nobleman after another..." He began. "It-'
"It what?" Her gentle voice broke apart the vault full of not only angry fear that had been raging inside his heart since he'd abruptly left the Ball but all the other conflicting emotions he'd been experiencing all evening before he'd bolted from the Royal Ballroom.
Atreyu took a deep breath, forcing the words past his clogged throat. "It enraged me." He turned his head so his forehead was once again leaning against her instead of his cheek. "It infuriated me that Not One of Those Men there at the Ball see you how I see you." A strangled sob threatened to crack his voice but he forced it back down into its well. 'Not One of Them even wants to bother to take the time to do so. It's like they'd rather see you as an object they hope to claim as their own one day and use you for their own selfish gain!" Atreyu lifted his head at last to look up at His Empress. His eyes so full of pain Moonchild's heart tightened as she felt that pain as if it were her own. "I can't bear to see that happen to you Moonchild." He swallowed hard, his pain-filled eyes never leaving her. "You don't deserve that kind of Fate..."
Then he was on his feet staring down at her, lightly cupping her face tenderly in his hands. The fingers of both those hands were caressing her cheeks, the tips running themselves carefully through the strands of hair that had escaped her circled braid from the night's breeze as she had frantically searched for him. His head bent down enough so their temples were touching one another, the bridges of their noses grazing each other.
"I can't give you what the 'Others' can Moonchild...I have Nothing..." His voice was now no more then a inaudible whisper.
"I know..." She breathed, looking up into his beautiful dark eyes. "And I Don't Care..." She rubbed the tip of her nose against his own. "I have all I want Right Here in Front of Me...I have You." Standing on tiptoe, The Empress let her arms come up from her sides to rest on either side of his neck, "And that's All I'll Ever Want or Need..."
Atreyu brushed his lips upon her forehead, "And I have You..." His lips now brushed the tip of her nose. "You're All I Need in this life...I don't want Anything or Anyone Else..."
"We have Each Other..."
This last line was spoken by both of them at the same time their lips met in a tender kiss.
At this first contact it was as if nothing else mattered... The Whole of the Ivory Tower could have come crashing down around them and they wouldn't have noticed.
That first shared kiss melted into another and another and yet another still. Soft, tentative they were at first...then ever so gradually they became more. They were still extremely slow kisses but still they were passionate ones nonetheless as the depth of their love for one another washed over them. Wave after glorious wave surged through them as though as a pair of dams holding back a tsunami had broken forth to fill their hearts to overflowing and drown their souls with the knowledge that nothing could break them apart.
Ever.
No One. Not Cairon, Not Brijatte. Not Even Scores of Fantasian Noblemen with their Titles, Selfishness and The Need to Lord over Everything and Everyone, could tear them away from each other. They could be forced to be miles away from each other but their hearts and souls were now as One. And Nothing...Not even The Most Powerful Dark Magic in All of Fantasia or Any Other World, for that matter, could undo their unity of souls.
Her fingers resumed their threading of his hair while his own caressed her face, her neck, her bare shoulders. Moonchild's breath escaped her as she felt his lips nibble her own then move alongside the edge of her face. Another breath, this one a little more sensual, left her mouth when she felt his lips brush the area below the lobe of her ear. She let her head fall back just a bit as she felt the warmth of his own breath against the side of her throat as his kisses, always light as a feather, followed suit. A barely audible moan she wasn't sure she'd let loose, joined Moonchild's sighs of ecstasy when she felt him suck lightly upon one of her shoulders before his lips retraced their path back to her mouth.
"I love you..." Atreyu breathed against her lips. "I love you so much..."
"I love you more..." She responded, her tone just as quiet as his.. "I love you most..."
They stood there, softly kissing, in a pool of light from a full moon surrounded by a circular grove of trees Deep in the Heart of a Secret Garden accessible ONLY to them, under a clear, starless Fantasian sky
Not until the distant hooting of a lone owl reach their ears did they come back to reality for the second time that night.
"We'd better go back Ogliglewakan..." Atreyu's voice held a hint of reluctance, as did the look in his eyes.
"I know..." She too, did not want to leave this cocoon of natural serene beauty.
Atreyu slid his hand into that of The Empress's and, with his heart as heavy as hers, led her back through the curtain of willow leaves, past the sleeping ducks in their pond, through the tunnel of intertwined trees, before passing the first half of this Secret Garden and finally, through the handleless dark green wooden 'door', which opened then closed behind them without a sound.
Only when they were through the veil of leaves, where Moonchild stooped to retrieve her discarded shoes, did Atreyu stop and turn towards His Empress.
"Do you think it'll still be here? The Garden?"
A soft smile appeared on Moonchild's lips as she straightened. "It'll always be here Atreyu. It always has been here. It was just waiting for us to discover it..."
"Does anyone else know of it?" The Empress knew he meant Cairon or Brijatte.
"No," She replied, in the same tone she had used so long ago when she had uttered the same exact word during their very first meeting when they both were trapped in the Magnolia Pavilion mere moments before the Nothing nearly rocked the Tower off its foundation. "No one but you or I will be able to locate it or see it." "'It'", she gestured to the hedge where the Leaf-Curtian had melted into hiding, "won't show itself to anyone else. I believe that even if another person were to get themselves over the edge of the hedge, all they'd find is another maze pathway. Even the curtain of leaves won't appear if It senses there is another person but either one of us."
"But what if anyone brought one of us here?"
"All they'd find is a maze hedge like any other." Moonchild leaned over and kissed him. "Don't worry My Atreyu, To everyone else in this Tower or in all of Fantasia, this would just be a local legend. Impossible to prove its existence. Even the Best, Most Talented Possessor of Magic, Good or Evil, in Fantasia, or any Other World, would not be able to divulge the location or enter the Secret Garden."
"Even if one of us spoke of it to others? Your Handmaidens for instance."
The Empress of Fantasia shook her head. "Even to them it would be a local legend. They-discounting Brijatte of course-would believe us. But still, It would just be a Legend of the Tower. Nothing More. Nothing Less."
Relived with the knowledge their Haven would always be there for them Day or Night should they need or want to return for any reason at all-while at the same time protecting Itself from prying eyes and greedy hearts-Atreyu: Warrior of the Great Plains, Hunter of the Purple Buffalo and Moonchild: Empress of Fantasia. made their way through the Royal Gardens to return to the Ball as if nothing special had happened.
:But Something Special HAD happened between them that evening.
That Something was Love.
