Walking past Lange’s desk, he suddenly doubled back. He’d just caught sight of it; gift number three. “Yeah McClane, something I can help you with?” The words were saturated with humor. It was only then that he realized he was leaning over the other man’s shoulder. He didn’t bother to move back. Instead he pointed to the picture on the screen. “That thing, it’s from that movie, right? The one in space.” The humor left Lange’s features only for him to be given an odd look. “Do you mean Star Wars?” He gave the other man a nod, pretending not to notice the stare.
The toy in the tiny picture looked familiar. If he was right, this should be the perfect gift. When Lange started speaking again he refocused his attention on their conversation. “Yes, it is. It’s a limited edition action figure of Darth Vader.” Hearing the confirmation made his certainty increase. The name of the character wasn’t exactly common and sounded even more familiar then the image looked. He just hoped it was a character that Matt liked. “Where can I buy one?” There was a small pause in which all Lange did was blink. The other man seemed dumfounded. “Nowhere.” Okay, now he was confused.
Apparently the other detective picked up on that because he explained further. “It’s too old. You can’t find it in a store, at least not a normal one anyway. This one is being auctioned off on EBay. There is no buy it now option, so you can’t buy it outright. You have to bid on it to win.” For a few seconds all he did was stare. He’d only gotten about half of that but he believed he understood the essentials. An auction was an auction, right? “How much is it going for?” A quick glance was sent to the screen before Lange answered in a mild tone. “Thirty dollars.” He frowned deeply. “For that little thing?”
Instead of appearing as shocked as he felt, the other man looked a little dismissive at the price. “It’s in the original packaging, the condition is pristine and there were only a limited amount of them made. All things considered the price is pretty cheap. Of course, we’re only in day one of the auction.” To him this seemed wasteful but the figurine wasn’t for him. It was for Matt. If the little thing managed to make him happy, no price was too high. “Can you put a bid in for me? I’ll give you twenty bucks whether I win or not.” With a snort, Lange turned to his computer fully. “For twenty bucks, I’ll hand deliver it to your desk.”
He sent the detective’s profile a crooked frown. “Don’t get too excited or I’ll start to think you’re ripping me off.” The other man didn’t bother to comment just smiled in a way that spoke volumes. He shook his head with his amusement. Sometimes the officers he worked with were as interesting as the job itself. “What is your price cap?” Thinking on it momentarily, he picked the first number that sounded good. “Fifty dollars.” He doubted very much it would go that high anyway. With a few clicks, Lange turned back to face him. “We’re all set. Right now you’re the winning bidder. If anything changes, including the auction total, I’ll give you an update.”
Giving the other man a slow nod, he stood completely upright. “If it goes over the fifty, let me know.” He was given an easy nod in response, Lange leaning back in his chair comfortably. “You got it.” With that done, he continued on his journey to his own desk. The gift would be a little more expense than he’d planned but as long as it made Matt happy then it would be worth it. Feeling more than a little satisfied he continued about his day as normal. Over the next week this normalcy continued, save for the updates Lange delivered. The sort of expensive gift ended up being an expensive gift.
Apparently it was pretty rare. That fact coupled with aggressive bidders meant that the final price was one hundred fifteen dollars and fifty two cents. After tacking on the twenty he’d promised Lange that meant he’d spent a little over a hundred and thirty dollars for a toy in a box. He really hoped he’d remembered things accurately. If Matt didn’t like this gift he was likely to have a heart attack. The toy, figurine, action figure, whatever, was being shipped from Arizona, so he had a few more days to wait before the big reveal.
He was an equal measure nervous and excited which was more than a little annoying at times to say the least. As much as he wanted the gift to arrive already, he also couldn’t deny that he hoped it never showed up. Then one day there it was, sitting on his doormat in an unassuming brown cardboard box. He quickly squirreled it away into the apartment, grateful that it had arrived while Matt was out at the market. Knowing he could arrive home at any moment though posed a serious problem. He didn’t want to get caught with his pants down, so to speak.
With this in mind, he retreated to his bedroom. It was the only domain that was still solely his own and he knew that Matt wouldn’t enter without knocking first. Secure in the knowledge that he wouldn’t be found out, he sat on the edge of the bed with the box. He placed it next to him on the rumpled covers then proceeded to open it with the upmost care. The box flaps were pulled back to reveal packing popcorn. He pushed some of the pieces aside, unconcerned when they spilled out onto his bed. With that layer relatively gone he could now see a box securely bound with bubble wrap.
Lifting the smaller box out of the cardboard, he examined the thorough application of packing tape. He chuckled lowly with no small amount of amusement. You’d think they were guarding Fort Knox. Removing the bubble wrap was a bit of a challenge but soon enough he was peeling away the plastic layers. It was then, sitting amongst the haphazard contents of the small box, that he got his first real glimpse of the action figure. After awhile he simply shook his head. He still didn’t get it. Now that the item was free of its bondage, he debated whether he should wrap it like a proper gift.
In the end, he decided not to. With his luck the tape would slip and damage the box. Now the only thing to do was wait. “I’m home!” His gaze darted to his closed door. The timing was a little unbelievable and if he was honest a little disconcerting. So much for having time to steel his nerves. Ah well, as distressing as it was, it wasn’t like he hadn’t been gearing up for this for weeks. Taking a deep breath, he got to his feet and left the room. His slow steps only came to a halt when his roommate was in sight. Currently the other man was in the living room, pushing several buttons to bring his computer online.
“Matt.” The sound of his name had the kid throwing him a quick glance. “Hey John, what’s up? How was work today? Reardon didn’t give you any trouble, did she?” A small chuckle bubbled into the air at the last question. For days now he’d been fielding advances from the rookie. It wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle, just a serious case of hero worship. He opened his mouth to respond only for nothing to come out. As the seconds passed, more silence followed. He became distinctly aware of the fact that he looked like a moored fish.
Finally after agonizingly long minutes the lack of response drew Matt’s full attention. When a thick dark brown lifted in question he wasn’t sure that was such a good thing. “John?” Feeling panic slowly starting to rise, he tried again only to release an inaudible half spoken mumble. The eyebrow lifted a little higher. With an expression that radiated curiosity more than concern, the other man slowly moved closer to where he was standing still as a statue. “Um John, is everything okay? You haven’t been sneaking into evidence lock-up, have you?” The eyebrow gave a small suggestive jump.
He didn’t have to guess at what Matt was implying. It was an ongoing joke with them that he had access to illegal drugs. The most common of which being marijuana. They both knew that he’d never actually touch the stuff but the younger man liked to tease him about it anyway whenever he was having an off moment. He went to shrug off the words, like he always did, only to manage an actual shrug. This time around Matt looked stumped and he could honestly say he didn’t blame him. At this point there would be no way out of this one without looking like a complete idiot. He suddenly wondered if he could pretend to have laryngitis.
“Okay that’s cool. I’m pretty good at charades. What does the first word sound like?” The comment was so ridiculous it broke him out of his trance. This time when he didn’t speak it was on purpose. He knew the look on his face said it all which was only confirmed when the other man proceeded to laugh. “What? I’ve heard of the strong silent type but this is a little severe even for you.” The sarcastic response was on the tip of his tongue when Matt’s next question inadvertently interrupted his intended words. “What are you holding? I’ve been waiting for you to tell me but we’ve already established that you’ve been dipping into the hash.”
At first he frowned lightly, focusing on the safe part of that statement. “I haven’t been dipping into anything.” For his efforts he got a grin, followed closely by an eyebrow waggle. “Life has been pretty dull lately, huh?” Deciding to ignore that comment, he moved on without any real thought. “As for the box…” It was here he stumbled. “Well, it’s, that’s to say…” His mind quickly shuffled through possible lies, ‘He found it on the stoop’, ‘It was on sale and he needed a doorstop’, ‘He was shopping early for a children’s toy drive at Christmas’. Never mind that it was only April. Maybe he would get lucky and Matt wouldn’t question his shopping habits.
“Wait a minute, is that Darth Vader?” The sound of a submarine under attack started to ring in his ears. If he wanted to spit out a well constructed or badly constructed lie, he was quickly running out of time. Call him a cynic; he was also pretty sure abandoning ship wasn’t an option at this point. “It is. Why would you have a Star Wars action figure?” This was it; this was the opening he’d been waiting for. His mind screamed at him, ‘Lie, lie, lie!’ He opened his mouth intending to attempt to obey the order when the other man continued. “And not just any action figure, a 1978 limited edition figure with a vinyl cloak and a telescoping light saber.” There was a slight pause, Matt’s gaze never leaving the awkwardly held gift. “In the box.”
With that, the other man looked up at him with suspicion in his eyes. “You bought this.” The announcement was said with a finality that brooked no argument. “Why did you buy something like this?” He shook his head slightly in denial regardless of the fact that he knew it was a lost cause. As expected Matt ignored the gesture. “I know you bought it for someone else. You could care less about this type of stuff. So the question is, who you bought it for and why?” It wouldn’t be long now before the kid made the connection. He could practically see the wheels turning in his mind.
“The fact that you bought a gift isn’t so strange but it’s the type of gift you bought. As far as I know, I’m the only person you know who would like…” And there it was. He could see the realization slowly overtaking Matt’s youthful features. He held his breath, hoping the sub didn’t start taking on water. “You bought this for me, didn’t you?” Just when the other man looked like he was going to continue another connection was made. “There never was some random mystery girl. The flowers were actually from you and the chocolates were more than a bargain buy, weren’t they?”
It had finally happened, he’d been found out. Although it felt good to get things out in the open, he was still a little concerned about Matt’s reaction. He couldn’t really suss out just what the younger man thought of this newest development. The only thing he could say for certain was that Matt didn’t appear angry or worse disgusted. That was a start if nothing else. “Yeah, all of it was for you.” The question that followed was the one he was expecting. “Why didn’t you just tell me that?”
He shrugged lightly, looking toward the wall briefly for a momentary escape from the uncomfortable conversation. “I don’t know. I didn’t know how to approach you. I didn’t even know you liked guys until I found out about Keith.” Internally he applauded himself for the tactful way he’d handled that. The last thing he wanted was to hurt the younger man. A reminder of the sex videos would do that. He blinked in shock when Matt chuckled. Of all the reactions he was expecting that was at the very bottom of the list. Still, it didn’t hurt or anger him because he could tell the laughter was directed inward to whatever the other man was thinking about. “He was a distraction.”
It was taking him a moment to catch up. “What?” The small smile steadily grew on Matt’s face. It didn’t stop until the other man wore the expression that showed he was truly happy. “When I first met Keith, he was a distraction, from you. I never thought you’d want to be together that way, so I started to date around. What are the odds that the situation with my ex would lead you in that direction? It sort of feels like we’ve come full circle.” He had to agree with that. No matter how much they were pulled in different directions they always ended up drawn back together. That was the way it had always been with them even from the very beginning. He had to wonder if that was part of the reason that everything was so easy with the other man, why everything always felt so natural.
“Well?” The random question had him refocusing on their enlightening discussion. “Well, what?” He was given a sly smile that hinted at playfulness. “Are you going to kiss me? I think the timing is right seeing as how you’ve been trying to woo me for over three weeks.” The word shocked paled in comparison to how he was feeling. One second he’s fearing the worst and the next Matt is blatantly asking for a kiss. He didn’t know how to react, so he didn’t. Instead he stood there dumbfounded, feeling like the village idiot for the hundredth time in the last hour.
The smile on the other man’s face softened slightly and grew until it was completely genuine. “Maybe I’ll just kiss you.” And with those words Matt leaned up slightly, his lips sliding softly against his lax mouth. Just like that it was as if someone flipped a switch. He reached out to pull the other man closer only to be stalled by the small box in his hands. Before he could worry about what to do with the gift, Matt reached down to take the box into his possession. It found its way to an end table a second later to land lightly on its side. Now that the present was no longer a barrier between them his arms circled around the slim waist and he pulled the other man close until they were pressed together chest to chest.
The press of his lips became firm until they were engaged in a proper kiss. As much as his mind was telling him to take things slow, it wasn’t long before things started to become heated. It was only when his hands unwittingly started to wander south that he put on the brakes. He pulled away with a deep inhale of breath, only too aware of his fingertips brushing the hidden waistline of Matt’s jeans. “We should stop. I haven’t been able to take you out yet. It wouldn’t be right.” A light flutter of a kiss landed on his lips in response, the other man moving on a second later to bestow the same treatment to the corner of his mouth. “I don’t want to wait. It already feels like I’ve been waiting forever.”
He knew logically he should move away. Their current closeness couldn’t be helping. Despite that knowledge he couldn’t force himself to withdraw from their embrace. It had felt like forever to him too. Lifting up his hand, he slid his palm over Matt’s cheek. “I want to do this right. If we rush into things, all of it could fall apart.” The younger man turned his head slightly to place a kiss in the palm of his hand. “It could fall apart anyway.” He did pull away then, using his frustration to get his feet moving. The new distance was only minimal but that didn’t mean that it still didn’t count.
“Matt, things will be different. We’ll be different.” He paused as he thought that over. It really was a frightening prospect. “That’s something we need to prepare for.” Looking across the few inches separating them he suddenly couldn’t stand it anymore. Taking a half a step forward, he gently gripped Matt’s upper arms. Just that little bit of contact was enough to help his nerves to settle. Sometimes he didn’t understand the hold the kid had over him. Maybe he would never understand it, maybe he wasn’t meant to. When Matt started to speak he was pulled back to the present. “Why, when it’s what I want?”
Again, he didn’t know what to say. That was how he felt as well but things always went south. Rushing into anything couldn’t help those odds. A small sigh preceded the other man continuing in a low tone. “I like things the way they are. I don’t want them to change but at the same time I do. Fast or slow, we can’t know what’s going to happen. No one can know that about anything. All I do know is that we fit. I’ve never felt this in tune with anyone before in my life. If you want to wait, I’m okay with that, I just can’t deny that I don’t want to.” There was a crooked half-smile on Matt’s face and his eyes were soft with a deep affection.
In that instant he knew he was fighting a losing battle. He’d feel more comfortable going slow but in reality the other man was right. Life held no guarantees. Yet looking at Matt now he had to wonder if this time around things would be different. Not letting himself dwell further on the past, he leaned forward to deliver a solid kiss. When he pulled back some minutes later, he was proud to see that the other man looked dazed. “I don’t want to wait either.” Some of the haziness cleared away only for Matt to smile broadly. He smiled as well in reaction, unable to help the response.
Just as the younger man started to lean upward, he leaned back down until they met in the middle for a heated kiss. This time he didn’t hold back one ounce of the desire he was feeling. His lips were thorough, leading the way for his tongue to gently work its way past the unresisting barrier of Matt’s lips. Even as his right hand skimmed over the slim form anywhere it could reach, his left arm looped around the slender waist in a grip that was as solid as steel. One small tug had them chest to chest once more. The closeness was enough that with any minuscule shift he could feel the swell of Matt’s erection bump against his hip.
It ratcheted up his arousal, had him pushing his hips forward. They both moaned heavily when their erections slid together for the first time. He took a step forward to bring them closer. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible, so all it served to do was to push them backward. Their new momentum was stopped by the back of the couch. Fervent thoughts flitted across his mind; pushing Matt down to the floor, draping him over the back of the couch, pushing him up against the wall. His mind screamed for anywhere for them to proceed. These thoughts more than anything told him it was time to lead them to the bedroom.
This was the one thing he could insist on doing right the first time around. There would be other opportunities to christen the entire apartment later if they wished. For now though he was determined to pamper Matt in a way his jerk of a previous boyfriend never had. He would show his new lover, in every way he could, the depth of his affection. It wasn’t something he was really good at but he knew this was a good place to start. Taking another step, this one backward, he started to lead them in the right direction. They stumbled through the living room as well as the tiny hallway.
When they were close to his bedroom they hit the wall a little hard and he half-noticed a picture bounce on its nail precariously. As soon as he realized the now crooked frame wouldn’t crash to the floor he pushed it out of his mind. Pulling them into his bedroom, he only stopped moving when they were standing right next to the bed. The first thing he did when he got there was to kick off his shoes. He didn’t have to look to know that the kid was already barefoot. During the awkwardness of earlier he’d been looking down enough to remember seeing slim feet. So for the moment he’d worry about getting them started on an even keel.
The dress shoes he was wearing came off easily enough but the socks gave him some measure of difficulty. Still, his toes were dexterous and eventually got the job done. As soon as his bare feet where touching the thick carpeting, he broke off their kiss so his lips could start to travel. They landed on Matt’s neck gently, his teeth delivering random light nips. A hand settled on the back of his head with the touch. “Yeah…man that feels hmm.” The hum had him smiling, well that and the fact that the other man was being vocal. Somehow he wasn’t overly surprised. He snorted lightly in amusement only to zone out when the hand started to massage his scalp.
Although the touch was light, it left his muscles feeling as solid as jello. Feeling the need to reciprocate in some way, he latched on to the pale skin he was kissing to give it a solid suck. A heavy moan filtered to his ear before Matt’s knees seemed to buckle slightly. His handhold prevented the younger man from falling but the damage was already done. The arousal which he had managed to stem flared back up hotly. Now was the time to move on before he lost all semblance of control. Lifting up both of his hands, he rubbed them heavily down the front of Matt’s chest.
When his fingertips reached the bottom of the t-shirt, he gripped the soft cotton edge and proceeded it lift it up. His lips left the now bruised skin he was kissing to quickly yank off the shirt. It was thrown carelessly somewhere out of his sight. He only waited until it was out of his grip before running his hands over the now exposed chest. The light trembling he could feel seriously turned him on. His touch varied from his palms lightly glancing over the skin to leaving solid trails with the tips of his fingers. When his thumb lightly slid over a peaked nipple Matt arched into his touch.
Despite the tempting reaction, he moved on to explore every bit of newly exposed territory. His hands made their way down the curve of the other man’s spine, eventually sliding down to trace the edge of his jeans. The pad of his thumb slid over an innie belly button and dipped inward just enough to tease the sensitive skin inside. When he pulled away his other thumb brushed over a dark mole half hidden by the waist of the dark blue denim. He fixed his attention there for a few moments, pressing against the mark just to the left of a bony hip.
There weren’t a lot of the small marks on Matt’s body but there were enough of them to warrant some extra observation. Maybe one of these days he’d spend a whole afternoon just kissing each and every spot scattered over the pale skin. His mouth practically watered just thinking about it. With a small sigh, he forced himself to move on. Lowering his hands further, he gripped the waistline of the jeans. In the same instant that his hands started to undo the button, his head dipped down to seal over a nipple. A shout reached his ears seconds before a hand dug into his back.
He reveled in the sensations but didn’t let it distract him from his goal. The button came open easily, his fingers automatically moving on to pull down the zipper. All the while his lips sucked at the peaked skin, his tongue on occasion lapping over it lazily. When the material at the jeans lay wide open, he reached in with his hand to seek out the other man’s erection. It didn’t take long before his hand slid over heated cotton. There was a jerk forward into his grip, a wavering moan that slid into his ears. Not wasting any time, he turned his wrist until he could get a decent handhold.
He kept his touch light, just cupping the erection and rubbing over the hardness with his fingers. Still, it was enough to have Matt practically squirming in his grip. After long seconds he pulled away from the drenched nipple only to move on to its twin. His lips had barely made contact before he pulled away his hand. The retreat produced a forlorn moan which he promptly ignored. He knew the disappointment wouldn’t last long, not if he had anything to say about it anyway. With both hands now free, he gripped the edge of the jeans.
