Chapter 4 John Bender positioned himself comfortably in the back seat of Brian Johnson’s car, his left arm neatly wrapped around the shoulders of the blonde beside him, dark shades covering his eyes and a inane grin plastered upon his face, “what’s up, guys?” he said as both Brian and Julia exchanged exasperated glances. “As ever, nothing, John.” Brian exclaimed as he started the car and moved away from the curb. “Still got that interest in exciting blondes then?” “Come on; give me a break will ya! Always riding my arse ‘bout settlin’ down. When you gonna get it into you head I ain’t interested.” “I just don’t think it’s very appropriate you turning up at Allison’s and Andy’s with yet another woman attached to your arm, and what is with that earring.” Brian watched as the blonde leant into John and kissed him. “You know I only wear it to get up your arse, besides it means something to me.” “Really,” Brian announced acridly, “I’d honestly have thought that you would have shown Claire a little more respect than that, like giving it back to her when you guys split up.” “Who’s Claire?” the blonde asked. “No one,” John dismissed. Brian shook his head and looked back over to Julia for support only finding distress. “How long’s this ride gonna take?” “I’d say about 2 ½ hours, why you going to sleep?” “Yep, got it in one, see you the other end.” He slid down the back of the seat the blonde following, giggling at his gesticulation as he went. “This is going to be such a fun weekend, I can see it now.” Brian announced, still shaking his head. Julia lent over placing her left hand on his right trying to soothe him, “Don’t worry Brian, it’ll be ok.” “Will it,” he asked of her, looking at her quickly, “will it really; somehow I really don’t think so.” *** “John, we’re here!” Brian shouted as he opened the back door of his silver Audi, a hunched up John Bender slipped down from his resting place, Brian only just being able to catch him. He awoke, “Hi Bri,” he smiled. “Come on Bender; sort yourself out for pity’s sake.” Brian’s irritation growing with everything John had done so far. “What the hell do you think Alex and Jason are gonna to think of you, man? And seeing you like this is gonna break Allison’s heart.” John picked himself up out of the heap he found himself in, dusted himself off and walked around to the other side of Brian’s car where the blonde was now stood. “I’m fine, Brian. You ok?” He asked the blonde touching her chin with his thumb, she nodded. Brian shook his head again, closed the door and locked his car. “Don’t you think you better introduce us to your friend?” “Thought you’d never ask. This Brian is Cyndi Fallon, Cyndi meet Brian and Julia” “Hi,” was all Cyndi could muster. As the group started their walk down the path to the house Brian pulled at John’s elbow, “look, just do yourself one favour when you get down there.” “What Bri.” “Ask Allison if you can use the bathroom, you’ve obviously not freshened up after your night out as you still stink of booze, fags and sweat. And for god’s sake lose the glasses and the grin, for the moment anyway.” John lent into Brian, “am I really that bad?” “Yeah!” Exclaimed Brian. John held his hands up in a gesture of submission, “Ok, I’ll sort myself out.” Both men quickened their step to fall in by their partner as they carried on toward the house. As soon as they took the upper track up to the house they were greeted by an excited Alex. “Uncle Brian, Auntie Julia, Uncle John, who are you?” “That’s Cyndi,” Brian managed, “Come here and plant one on me, kid.” Alex ran into Brian’s awaiting arms and kissed him squarely on his cheek. “I’ve missed you, why haven’t you been to see me?” She asked. “Well, Julia and I have been on holiday, but we brought you a present back.” “Can I have my present?” “You’ll have to wait a little while longer as it’s packed in the overnight bag.” “Ok, have you got me a present, Uncle John?” “I’m sorry poppet, I haven’t this time, apart from a big hug,” Brian stared at him, “which I will give you later. Oh look, there’s your mommy! Hi, Allison.” “Hi yourself!” Allison said as she hugged John, releasing him when she realised that he still stank from his night out. “Who’s your friend?” She asked as she pulled away. “This is Cyndi.” “Hi Cyndi, hope you had a pleasant journey?” “Yeah, fine!” Cyndi exclaimed. Allison looked over to John for an explanation, “she’s not normally up this early.” Allison looked him over; he’d obviously had a heavy night. “Can I use the bathroom?” He asked. “Of course, help yourself. You know where it is, we’ll look after Cyndi until you get back, ok?” “Sure, see you in a bit,” after kissing Cyndi hard on the mouth he strutted off with his bag in the general direction of the house leaving the others chatting. “Hi Allison,” Brian took her into his arms. “Hi Bri, Hi Julia,” pulling out of another hug she carried on, “are both of you ok?” “Yes we’re fine, we’ve got some news but we want to wait, tell you all when we’re all together.” “Great, well let’s make our way down to the deck. Andy shouldn’t be too long now and we have a surprise guest for dinner.” “Who?” Brian asked. “You’ll never guess,” Allison remarked excited at the prospect of making him wait to find out, then her expression fell. “Shit!” “What, Allison, forgotten who it is already?” Brian joked. “No, she’s in the bathroom that I’m sure John is going to use, oh god.” Allison ran down toward the house hoping she wasn’t going to be too late, the other’s in full chase. Almost falling through the back door all she could do was look on watching two of her closest friends standing in her hallway just staring at one another, dumbstruck. Soon she was joined by Brian, his eyes opened wide in shock at the same scene, “Shit,” he exclaimed. *** Claire looked at herself in the mirror, giving herself the once over. She had managed to recoup most of what was left of her make-up and with a flick of mascara she was once again ready to face the world. She straightened herself, smoothed down her skirt and made for the door. Upon opening it she stepped back out into the hallway closing the door behind her, unaware of their being anyone there. She turned only to be faced with her past. “Claire?” Was all John could manage, dropping his bag on the floor. “Hi, John.” She managed, catching his eye, unexpected feelings bubbling to the surface of her usually calm exterior. Not that she wanted them to but she had little choice. She had often wondered what she would do or how she would react if she ever saw him again but no thought to the event could have ever prepared her for what was actually taking place. She looked him over, still the dark smouldering eyes that she could drown in, still the floppy hair that was maybe a little bit shorter but she would still be able to run her fingers through it and drive him wild. His build was slightly more beefier than she remembered but she thought that that was probably due to work than for any other reason, not that she didn’t like it because she did, a more defined muscular shape. And he still wore her earring, she couldn’t possibly think why considering it had been his idea to break up, she’d assumed that he would have sold it or lost it by now. She wanted to close the gap but fear stopped her, not because of what reaction she might get from him but what reaction she would get from herself. After all, she was at the lake for one reason, to forget men. Going up to John and touching him was not exactly going to help her cause one little bit. John stood transfixed, watching Claire, watching him. She obviously still liked what she saw so he thought he would return the gesture. Still the gorgeous red hair although slightly longer and darker, still the gorgeous dark eyes that he got lost in. She was thinner than he remembered, slightly drawn, very pale in spite of her make-up and she looked tired. There was something wrong with the picture but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He couldn’t help thinking that he was somehow responsible. That leaving her was the worst possible thing he could’ve done. Which of course he knew it had been, so many times he’d wished he could turn the clock back and make her stay with him, forever. Then he looked at her left hand searching for the one thing that should’ve been there and wasn’t, her wedding ring. Why wasn’t she wearing it and was her appearance as a result of it being missing. For what seemed like an eternity they stood there motionless, watching the other as if waiting to pounce. One had to break the silence, inevitably it was John. “You’re looking well,” he lied. “Thanks, you too.” He looked away momentarily, lost for words, not knowing what to say to try and relieve the situation that they were both in. “What you been up to?” Lame but it was the best he could come up with and it was a leading question, hopefully. “Nothing much, I’ve been writing a bit and decorating.” Was her non-committal answer. “Decorating?” “Yeah, I bought the lake house that we all used to come up to. I’ve been there a few months now.” “So many happy memories,” he mused. She smiled. “Other than that though, everything ok?” “Yeah fine. How about you?” “I’m fine, my business is doing well and I just bought a new place myself.” “Really, what are you up to these days?” “I’m still in the building game, only I don’t have to do the labouring anymore. I pay someone else to do that now.” “Wish I’d known about that, John. I’d have asked you for a quote.” “All’s fair in love and business; anyway, I’d probably worked out too cheap. You with anyone?” “No, just me for a while, a long while. You?” Claire hoped it would be a resounding no as well. “Yes, I brought my friend Cyndi.” He watched as she tried to deal with his horrible blow, she physically deteriorated in front of him. She looked away hurt and dejected unable to look at him anymore. Pain tore at his heart as he realised for the second time in his life he had made the one person he loved more than anything in the world look extremely lost and rejected. He only hoped that there would never be another repeat, he knew he would never be able to stand a third time. “Are you ok, Claire?” He asked, reaching out to her with his hands. Claire pulled back, frightened of the contact that was coming way too close to her. It wasn’t that she was frightened of John, far from it, but she realised that any male contact would be far out of her reach for the time being until she could learn to trust again. “I’m fine,” she smiled, “I’m ok.” She looked up noticing four sets of eyes upon them. “I think I better get back to the other’s John, you clearly need to use the bathroom.” John watched closely to her movements, he could swear that she made sure she avoided him at all costs, and when she had reached the others she hadn’t even hugged Brian, odd considering she had never not done that before. Maybe she felt she was above them all again with her marriage to the mayor, ‘setting her sights higher’ he thought. After procuring his bag, he quickly made his way into the bathroom and locked the door behind him. Finding some of Andy’s toiletries he decided to have a shower. The cool refreshing rain like flow above his head rushed over his body as he stood there mindful of the past half an hour’s events, of all the things he had come to expect in his life he had never expected to see his beautiful Claire again. His beautiful Claire, if only she were that. He considered the possibility but was she really that stuck up again. He would find out, he didn’t quite know how yet but he would make it a personal goal, his first resolution on the road to getting her back. If that was what he really wanted? He knew his body wanted exactly that, the thought of making love to that woman again was enough to set him alight right now but he controlled himself. And his heart was in complete agreement, he really wanted her back. Firstly though he had to do something about Cyndi, then it would be resolution number two, winning back her heart.
