He looked around the room and noticed his cousin was seated in the chair before his desk, waiting for him. “Caleb?” “Mark,” Caleb greeted. “I need more information.” Mark sat down at his desk. “What can I do for you? The girl is at Spencer, I understand?” “Yes, she’s is,” Caleb replied. “So what more do you need?” “I was wondering if during your research you came upon any information specifically about witch powers. I can’t seem to find much in the books you lent me. Do you recall anything about differences between warlocks and witches?” Mark tapped his pencil on his desk, thinking. “I think I might have some manuscripts saved on my computer, ones that I requested from a supplier of rare documents in England. They were in old English, but I used a translator program. They were written by a monk in the 1300’s who proclaimed himself a witch hunter and made it his life task to learn all he could about witches in order to identify them.” “Lovely,” Caleb frowned. Mark grinned. “Yeah, but his research was fairly extensive. Let me see if I can pull it up…” He grabbed the mouse on his desk and began clicking through his files while Caleb waited. “Here it is.” Mark turned his screen so Caleb could read along with him. Mark pointed at the screen. “Here it says that witches magic was more elemental and intuitive, connected to the natural world. Warlocks magic was more direct - a manipulation of energy to do as he desired.” Caleb nodded. That made sense. Madison’s ability to see the dead was definitely connected to her intuitive side. “Does it say anything about a witches power to enthrall a warlock?” Mark glanced up at Caleb and grinned, lifting one eyebrow. “Put a spell on you, did she?” “She doesn’t know she’s a witch yet,” Caleb retorted, not wanting to discuss that reality with his cousin. “But she seems to have some sort power that draws a warlock to her.” “Wouldn’t that work out in your favor?” Caleb shook his head. “We are going off topic. Look, this is the first witch of the blood in Ipswich for many decades. None of us alive today have any idea how it’s all suppose to work. I just want to know more about them.” Mark was scanning the manuscript as Caleb spoke. “O.K. I think I found something. A witch is very seductive to warlocks who have trouble resisting her charms. She ensnares them to lust just by her very presence. The stronger the warlock, the more he desires her. The witches powers of seduction grow stronger as she ages. It is with these she attracts her mates. If there are no warlocks to mate with her, she will gradually become insane. A warlock with no witch to mate with will be faced with draining his body of its youth and will face an early death. It is a symbiotic relationship. Mark sat back in his chair. “Looks like she needs you guys too, doesn’t it? Insanity would be worse than dying early to me.” Caleb leaned forward and put an elbow on Marks desk, leaning his forehead onto his hand. Then he began laughing. Sitting back, he smiled at Mark. Madison had been taking these pills to control these visions that were going to drive her insane someday when all she really needed was… sex with a warlock. And he promised her he’d look into methods to control her abilities. Ha! Now what was he going to say? ‘Hey Madison, you just need to screw one of us and you’ll be cured.’ He could just feel the slap on his face now. “What’s so funny?” Mark asked. Caleb shook his head. “Nothing. Thanks for your help. It’s cleared up a lot of things for me.” OOOOO Madison sat at her desk in her dorm room pouring over the books Caleb had given her to read earlier. The original history of Ipswich was fascinating, yet a bit creepy as well. Reading about the witch hunts and trials made her feel something strange inside, as if she had lost something. And perhaps her ancestors did lose people. She found the name Marish in some of the books, scanning the indexes of each to find it. She thought back to some of her visions - hanging people, burning people: these were obviously from long ago, during those times when people couldn’t accept anyone being different. And the Marish house, full of ghosts… it gave her chills when she remember the five hooded figures coming towards her. As she was reading she came upon the name of Danvers and she remembered that Caleb said his family was one of the originals as well. So when she finished reading anything to do with Marishes, she looked for passages about Caleb’s family. Surprisingly, as she read about Danvers, she found Garwins, Parrys, and Simms too. What if…? She began flipping through the indexes again, looking for Wenham and Tunney, Sarah and Kate’s last names. No, those weren’t part of the histories. So, just the boys then - the four close friends, and her, as far as she knew. She didn’t know everyone at school yet. Maybe there were more original families. She wondered if Caleb, Pogue, Reid and Tyler were friends because of their history… A knock on her door broke her into her musings. When she opened it, she found Tyler standing there with some textbooks in his arms. “Hey, mind if I study in here? Reid’s practicing his guitar and it’s hard to concentrate.” Madison let him in. “Sure, no problem. Reid plays guitar? Is he any good?” “He thinks he is.” She walked back to her desk as Tyler set his books down on the unused bed. He came up behind her, looking over her shoulder. “What are you working on?” “Caleb gave me some books on Ipswich history. They’ve been very informative. I found your family in here,” she smiled, looking at him over her shoulder. “Just mine?” “No, your friends too, and mine. I can’t seem to find anyone else yet. Are there more old families still living in Ipswich?” “Not that I’m aware of,” he replied, placing a hand on her shoulder as he leaned over her, looking at the open book in front of her. Madison swallowed at the feel of his hand and wondered if he was trying to balance himself or make a move. Not that she wouldn’t mind getting closer to Tyler. But she also had feelings for Reid. Both of them had been her constant companions and both flirted with her in their own ways, but she had never really been alone with one of them in an intimate setting like her room before. Her heart sped up a little bit. He flipped through some of the pages of the book, still keeping one hand on her shoulder. Madison couldn’t concentrate anymore, especially when the fingers on that hand began curling through her hair, twinning the strands around his fingers in a mindless caress. He leaned further over her shoulder, his face just inches away from hers as he read the book in front of him silently. Madison turned her head, slightly, her breath a little heavier, as she glanced from his fingers on her shoulder to his face. She grinned when she realized that he wasn’t really reading, but pretending to read in order to get close to her. Tyler finally looked at her, a smile forming on his face at being caught. “What are you doing?” Madison asked, grinning as her eyes went back to the fingers twirling her hair. “Touching your hair. It’s soft. And I bet it would feel even softer draped all over me as we made out on your bed.” He wagged his eyebrows playfully, making Madison laugh. He stood, releasing her hair and removing his hand, pretending to stretch as he moved to her bed. She watched as he sat on the edge of her bed, his eyes bright with suggestion. “You think I’m joking, don’t you?” he said. He patted the spot on the bed next to him. “Come here and I’ll tell you want you want to know.” “I thought you came here to study,” Madison laughed. But inside she was a mess of nerves. Tyler was making a move on her and she wasn’t sure what to do. What about Reid? “We are studying. You’re learning about the Sons of Ipswich.” “The Sons of Ipswich? Is that what you call yourselves?” “That’s what we are known as. We are the sons of the original families. And you would be a Daughter of Ipswich.” “So is there like an organization or a foundation for the original families?” Tyler shrugged. “Yeah, but the old ladies take care of that stuff. Come here, Madi.” He patted the bed again. Madison rolled her eyes playfully. “Why?” “Because I want to kiss you,” Tyler grinned. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and she knew she had to make a quick decision. She didn’t want Tyler to think she didn’t like him in return because she really did. She found herself standing and walking the short distance to her bed. Tyler’s grin grew bigger as she stood in front of him, hesitated a moment, and then sat next to him. She crossed her legs at the ankles, and looked down at her fingers on her lap nervously. Tyler’s hand rose to her back and began caressing her hair down her back again, sending jolts of electricity through all her nerve endings when his fingers swept down her back. He leaned his face closer to hers and whispered, “I’ve wanted to kiss you since the first day I’ve met you.” As soon as she turned her face, his lips were on hers. She gasped slightly as his hands traveled around her waist, pulling her closer, and he took the opportunity to deepen the kiss. Madison’s mind relaxed in a haze of sensation as Tyler’s kiss worked its magic on her. His tongue swept into her mouth and she kiss him back, slanting her head slightly and wrapping her arms around his shoulders. He lay back on her bed, taking her with him, without breaking the kiss. Her hair fell on top of him, just as he had desired earlier, as he adjusted her body next to his. Madison felt like she was burning up in the heat of their combined passion. She had kissed a few guys before, but never anything as consuming as this. His hand left her waist and traveled down her hip and leg, until it was almost behind her knee. He hoisted her leg up and on top of his leg, so that she was half-way lying on top of him. He groaned into her mouth as he felt her heated core on his leg through their clothing and he moved his leg slightly, trying to give her more pleasure. Madison gasped and broke the kiss, breathing hard as she starred down into his eyes. She was burning up with need and the sensations he was creating, but it seemed so sudden, and another part of her was fighting for control even if her body wanted to given him anything he desired. “Madi,” he breathed, “you’re so beautiful.” He engaged their kiss again, feeling her shudder in pleasure and he felt painfully hard. God, he wanted her! The hand around her waist began pulling her shirt up, slipping onto the bare skin of her back, caressing her as they kissed and grinded. He moved his fingers up to the clasp of her bra and began fumbling with it, trying to unfasten it. At that, Madison felt an alarm break through the fog of her lust. He was trying to take it to the next level and she wasn’t sure she should let him. She had not known him more than two weeks, after all. Tyler finally used a bit of power to undo the clasp beneath his fingers, and it fell open. But then he felt Madi withdraw, breaking their kiss. “Tyler,” she breathed. “I… it’s too soon.” His eyes stared into hers and then at her kiss swollen lips as his hands stilled. Then he closed his eyes, willing himself back into control. “I’m sorry,” she added. “I haven’t really… you know… gone very far before.” He nodded, letting out a big breath. “It’s all right, I understand.” He took both hands and raised them up to her bra clasps, refastening them. “I can be patient,” he grinned. He wondered if that was true. OOOOO Tyler returned to his room a short while later, finding Reid still awake and finishing homework. Tyler flopped down on his bed, hands behind his head, smiling. “Well? What happened?” Reid asked. “Kissed her.” “That’s it?” “Yeah, she’s a virgin. It’s not going to happen quickly.” Reid nodded. “Yeah, I thought she might be.” They were silent for a few moments. “You know, baby boy, you don’t get her to yourself, right? There’s only one witch for four warlocks in Ipswich.” Tyler frowned. “You know, Reid, it’s ultimately her choice, isn’t it? We can’t make her sleep with us all. She might want to choose. We are not rapists.” “And you think she’ll choose you?” “Fuck you, Reid. She just might. She seemed to like me a lot tonight.” “She hasn’t tried me yet,” Reid laughed. OOOOO The next morning Reid sat in his science class, listening to the conversation behind him. Kira Snider was gossiping about Madison, telling her lab partner about seeing her taking pills. He was getting so sick of that bitch. She needed a lesson. He bent his head into the palm of his hand to hide the flash of his eyes. It was wonderful not to hear Kira’s grating voice any more, and he smiled to himself. He could hear Kira’s lab partner now. “Kira, what’s the matter?” When the blackness was gone from Reid’s eyes, he turned around and feigned concern. Everyone was watching Kira now as she grasped her throat and tried to talk. No words came out. “Awww…” said Reid with mock sympathy. “Looks like a case of laryngitis.” Or a case of shut the fuck up. His eyes caught Sarah’s in the back of the room and Sarah grinned at him knowingly, giving him a thumbs up. OOOOO The Sons of Ipswich were in the locker room, preparing for their swim meet. Pogue walked past Reid on his way to his locker and slapped him on his back. “Hey, nicely done with Kira. We should have done that long ago,” Pogue praised. “How long should laryngitis last?” Reid laughed. “How about for the rest of her life,” Tyler suggested. “Give her three days,” Caleb decided. “Party pooper,” Tyler muttered. They began walking out of the locker room into the pool area. Caleb stopped straight in his tracks, noticing who was sitting with Kate and Sarah. “What is she doing here?” he asked in a low voice. “What? Madison? We invited her come,” Tyler replied. Caleb turned away from her, looking at the other sons. His nostrils flared and fists and teeth clenched. “Caleb?” Tyler asked, concerned. “What’s the matter?” Caleb pushed back passed them into the locker room. “What wrong with him?” Reid asked. Pogue glanced at the younger sons. “He’s more sensitive to a witches energy, since he ascended,” Pogue whispered, not wanting anyone else to overhear. “What’s that suppose to mean?” Tyler asked. “Hey! Where did Danvers go?” the coach yelled. “It’s time to get started.” “We’ll talk later,” Pogue hissed to the two sons. He looked at the coach. “He’s not feeling well, coach,” he called out. OOOOO The three girls in the stands watched as the swim meet started. “So which one are you going to pick, Madi?” Kate asked. “What do you mean?” “Tyler or Reid? I think they both like you a lot. Do you have a favorite? Madison shook her head. “I don’t know. I like them both right now.” Kate laughed knowingly. “You’ll figure it out.” “Where did Caleb go? Do you think he’s really ill?” Sarah asked. She wanted to go find out, but couldn’t just walk into the men’s locker room. “I’ll try to get Pogue’s attention and ask,” Kate said. OOOOO Pogue arrived at Caleb’s house a few hours later, having made his excuses to Sarah and Kate, and vowing to check up on Caleb’s well-being. “Hello, Pogue,” Caleb’s mother greeted. “He’s upstairs.” “Thanks, Mrs. Danvers.” He found Caleb out on the balcony that was attached to his bedroom. The eldest son was reclining back on a lounge, seemingly napping. “I know you’re awake,” Pogue announced, sitting down in the lounge chair next to Caleb‘s. “Did we lose?” “Yeah, of course,” Pogue grumped. Caleb was their best competitor on the swim team. “Sorry about that.” “I told Sarah you may have been coming down with the stomach flu.” Caleb snorted. “Thanks for ruining my love life for the next week.” “What are friends for,” Pogue grinned. There was a few moments of silence. “Is it really that bad, Caleb?” Pogue asked, seriously. “You’ll find out, Pogue, when you ascend in a few months. You have no idea.” “Maybe you should just do her then, Caleb. Get it out of your system. And from what you told me, she’d benefit too.” Caleb opened his eyes and turned his head, studying his friend’s face. “You’re serious?” “Yeah, I think.” “Is that what you are going to do? Cheat on Kate?” Pogue looked away, anguished. “What else do we do? Get her away from Ipswich?” “I thought of that. But I couldn’t do that to Reid or Tyler. And I couldn’t do that to Madison, either. She’ll eventually go insane without us.” “So, what? We live a double life?” “Haven’t we already been doing that? Sarah knows about us, but no one else outside of family does.” “I mean that we sleep with Madison, in secret, without telling our girlfriends - that kind of double life. Fuck, I already feel guilty just contemplating it.” “I know what you mean.” “So I guess we are doomed to never have a normal relationship of honesty and fidelity.” “When have our lives ever been normal, Pogue?” They sat and watched the sunset, both lost in their own thoughts. Before Pogue got up to leave he said, “Then we need to move things forward, Caleb. I’m letting her read the Book of Damnation. Let her put two and two together.” Caleb sighed and nodded.
