~~~~~ 1994 ~~~~~
For my sixteenth birthday my parents had bought me a car. It was a magenta Geo Tracker. I hated it, but it took me away from my parents. Jack called it the ‘Jeeplette.’ His parents didn’t trust him with a car, but I let him drive mine. We both lived in The Palisades, and I thought we were going to the local movie theater to see the movie but Jack breezed past it without even slowing down. "Hey! You passed it up!" I told him. He looked over at me and smiled. "How often are your parents away for the whole weekend?" He questioned. "Not often enough." I grumbled. "Exactly. It’s Friday the thirteenth, Red, we’re going to celebrate." He explained, slamming his big foot down on the brake pedal when the light turned red. "Ugh, don’t call me that, and I want to see the movie." I complained. I hated when he called me Red. It made me sound like an old man in bibbed overalls playing checkers on top of a pickle barrel at the general store. "We’re going to see the movie, don’t worry, and what’s wrong with ‘Red?’ It’s my favorite color." He frowned, stomping the gas pedal. "I told you, it sounds like an old man name. I thought black was your favorite color." "Technically, black isn’t a color. I like a lot of colors. The purple and green in your room looks good, but red is my favorite. What am I supposed to call you if I can’t call you Red?" "How about my name, Becca? Where exactly are we going to see the movie?" "The City. Becca sounds entirely too sweet for you." "The City!" "I told you, we’re going to celebrate. I read in the paper that they’re having special promotions for The Crow at Gotham City Cinema." He explained, and my excitement must’ve shown on my face because Jack grinned. "Can I call you Red now?" "Absolutely not, but thank you for taking me into the City." I practically hopped in my seat. "I can’t call you Becca. I might as well just call you my little bunny. It’s just... too cutesy." He scrunched his nose. "Well, what’s wrong with Rebecca, then?" "Sounds too normal. Hey, how about Scarlet?" "Like Scarlet O’Hara?" "No more arguments. I’m calling you Scarlet, like the color, not Gone With The Wind. Plus it sounds cool. It’s got the word ‘scar’ in it." He said, and I didn’t hate it. I actually liked that he cared enough to give me a nickname. "Fine, you can call me Scarlet. You should park the car at Kattering. We can take the rapid into Downtown. We’ll never find parking on a Friday night." I suggested. Once we’d parked, taking the train got us into the City in no time. We got off at the Merchants Square Station, and we were there. The line into the theater was long, but it was populated with people like us. It felt good, it was exiting and it was almost everything I wanted. I loved the City. The way the lights glittered, the constant din of humanity, the scent of a dozen different foods... it felt alive compared to the bucolic Palisades. The only thing that could make this night better was if Jack would take my hand. If he would just kiss me, call me his girl. At least we looked like boyfriend and girlfriend to those around us. We finally got our tickets and went in. On the way inside there were tables set up and people were selling memorabilia for the movie. A woman in a flowing white gown was passing out free promotional posters, and Jack and I each took one. We finally took our seats, and, as the movie began, Jack slid his arm around the back of my chair. As excited as I was to finally see the movie, all I could focus on was Jack’s nearness. The theater was chilly, and I could feel his body heat radiating out to meet mine. Ten minutes into the film he began looping my hair around his index finger, letting it loose and doing it again. Thirty minutes in he rested his hand on my shoulder. My heart pounded so hard in my chest that the sound of my rushing blood thundered in my ears. I turned to look at him, but he kept watching the movie. I tried to do the same, but I couldn’t make sense of what I was seeing. An hour into the film I worked my courage up enough to shift in my seat until I could lean into Jack’s shoulder. Abruptly he pulled away from me. "I’m gonna get some popcorn. I’ll be right back." He said and bounded out of his seat. My heart seized in my chest, and I felt like a complete fool. ********** What the hell was he doing? She was his best friend. His only friend. When had he started getting so turned on by her? She looked the same as she had in their freshman year, but now she seemed somehow... different. He knew she liked him as more than a friend, but he hadn’t acted on it. He didn’t want to use her like that. He liked her too much. So why had he been paying so much more attention to how her hair swayed against her ass when she walked? Or how she smelled like cherries? The way her school uniform shirt strained to contain her tits had become a distraction he couldn’t comprehend. She’d been so thrilled to come into the City. Her eyes had sparkled. They hardly ever did that. Most days she wore a defeated but still defiant look in her eyes. Bringing her into Gotham was like releasing her from a cage. Once the movie had started she’d watched it, and he’d watched her. It was the look in her eyes. That was what had drawn him in. He hadn’t even realized how close he’d come to pulling her to him when she’d leaned into his shoulder. He’d freaked out and escaped into the lobby. She was probably back in the theater crying. He needed to fix this before it destroyed their friendship. He needed her to keep him sane. She was the only person who made any sense in this fucked up world. He chewed the inside of his lip and stared at the tables of movie memorabilia. "Can I help you?" The man who’d been packing up another table asked him. "Uh... I’m looking for something for my friend. I kinda pissed her off." He smiled sheepishly. The guy nodded his head in understanding. "You’re gonna need something special... like this." He said, digging a box out of one of the cases he’d already packed. Jack took the box and opened it. Inside was a silver ring on a black cord. Inscribed on the ring were the words: The Crow Real Love Is Forever. His brain balked at the idea of giving her the ring. A ring meant commitment. Still, her eyes... he knew he’d hurt her, and this ring would put the fire back in her eyes. "I’ll take it." ********** Jack came back in time to see the last half hour of the movie. He’d come back carrying a bucket of popcorn and a box of Gummy Bears. Without a word he handed me the candy. He knew I loved them, loved to bite their little gummy heads off. I recognized them as the peace offering they were, and I accepted them. I took them because I loved him. It didn’t matter how much he hurt me, because I would always forgive him. The movie ended, the credits began to play and people began shuffling out of the theater. Jack made no move to follow them. Pretty soon we were the only people left in the theater. "Hey, Scarlet, you know you’re my best friend, right?" He asked me, using my new nickname for the first time. "I’m you’re only friend, Jack... but you’re my only friend, too." I told him. "We’re too much for this world." He nodded, and it made me laugh. "Maybe you’re right." I agreed, standing up. Even the credits were done now. Jack stood up, too. "I got you something. A symbol of our friendship." He told me. "Yeah, thanks for the Gummy Bears..." "No, something else. Come here." He chuckled and pulled me around to stand in front of him. He reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled something out. Using both hands he held it out, and I could see it was a ring on a black cord. He lifted it over my head and then lifted my hair up over it. The silver ring slipped between my breasts, and I pulled it up to look at it. "The Crow Real Love Is Forever... Jack... this... this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen." I giggled, unable to contain my adoration for him or the gift. He tilted my chin up and inspected the way it nestled between my boobs. "It suits you... come on, let’s get out of here and grab some dinner." He said, and, for the first time ever, he took my hand. Jack dragged me behind him and out onto the street. I never knew what to expect from Jack, but it was one of the reasons I adored him. He made life so exciting. He was a real live wire. His large hand clasped around mine made my heart soar. We walked a couple blocks east of Merchants Square until we found a Gotham City Pizzeria. Jack led me inside and ordered us each a slice. As the guy working behind the counter got our order, Jack grinned at me. "Are you ready for phase two of our Friday the thirteenth celebration?" He questioned. "Isn’t this phase two?" I replied. "Well, technically, yes, but this is more like a pit stop." "Okay, so what’s next?" I asked, taking my slice from him. He held the door for me as we headed back onto the street. "Ever seen Arkham Asylum?" He questioned me with a devilish glint in his eye.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
