Chapter 4
Evey, Evey. There is never a moment’s peace with you.
V was alone, lying in bed for what was
beginning to feel like forever.
Evey had gotten in touch with Finch as V had
hoped she would. Finch had pulled some
strings and Evey had gone topside to give her rallying cry.
She oozed nervous energy as she went clad in
a dress that was conservative in cut but ravishing in red. Juxtaposed
against her shorn hair, she was a true sight to behold. He couldn’t help
thinking about her parents and how proud they would be if they could see her in
that moment.
He, on the other hand was proving to be
something of a disappointment. How could such a simple question be so
difficult to answer? What was he planning to do now?
Frankly, he had no earthly idea.
"Ghost of the Future,"
V quoted Dickens from memory, "I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me
good, and as I hope to live to be another man from
what I was, I am prepared to bear you company, and do it with a thankful heart.
Will you not speak to me?" (3)
The ghost was silent, curse him.
Evey seemed to think that he expected to survive.
He hadn’t. It was shameful, but V never thought beyond November 5th.
That wasn’t completely true, he had wonder about her. He had given up hope of Evey returning to him,
though he had thought about it often. He had wondered if they could have a life
together, but could not imagine her returning, much less staying with him. She was not his tree.
Once that thought had been released he
wondered what she would do when he was gone, if she would do as he hoped. He
had imagined many possible futures for her and had wished her the best life
could offer, but he had not altered his plans.
Those plans were twenty years in the making,
perfectly devised, patiently executed and in the end unalterable. He had not been able to fathom this contingency,
much less plan for it. Now he was
kicking himself for such an egregious omission. How could he not have seriously considered
living past the 5th?
V might have looked like he was reading to
Evey, but he was not. He was adrift and trying very hard to find a buoy
to cling to. He only knew for certain what he would not do. He
would not interfere in the new government Evey would shape. Or at least
he wouldn’t much. Only if it went too far askew.
So, baring that eventuality, what was he going to do with the life he still
had?
Believing nothing is coincidence, he
supposed he should have been grateful for being bed ridden. If ever there
was a situation to force him to sit still and brood on the future, this was it.
V hated brooding. It was a fruitless
spiral that went nowhere and fed on its own uselessness, but what else was
there to do whilst waiting for his abused body to bounce back as it always
did.
He had honestly thought himself done for. He remembered only moments, snapshots in time,
of how he made it back to the train platform. He remembered thinking he wanted to be on the
train. He had to be on it. His blood had to be destroyed.
He remembered Evey’s last words to him. Everything he had said to Evey as he lay
dying was the Gods honest truth as told by a man who would not have to live
long enough to deal with the consequences.
It would be much easier if he were dead.
He knew enough about death to get it done efficiently and painlessly, but there
are lots of ways to die and some cost more than others. To suffer all
that he had to reclaim his last inch, to give up now was unthinkable, or at the
very least not an option.
Thus he still had the same problem.
What the bloody hell am I supposed to do
now?
