Darkness
James awoke to the most horrid noise in the darkness that sounded like someone choking. He sat up a little and reached for Bonnie but found that she wasn’t lying in the bed beside him. “Bonnie?” He questioned looking around the room when he heard the noise again. Quickly reaching over he lit a lamp, and grabbed his shirt pulling it on over his head as he got out of bed.
Carrying the lamp with him he followed the noise into the next room where he found Bonnie on the floor on her knees curled up in a ball coughing and choking shivering all over. “Darling? What is it, what’s wrong?” He questioned quickly putting the lamp down and kneeling beside her placing his hands on her shoulders pulling her up a bit and into his arms.
She was cold and clammy, and her skin was of the most ghastly gray color with a sheen of sweat over her face. Yet somehow she was cold as ice to the touch. “James . . . I feel so ill.” She said to weak to hardly move on her own. James touched her face and moved her hair away from her cheeks.
“I’ll send for a doctor immediately.” He said, “I’ve got to get you back to bed.” Reaching down he wrapped his arms around her and lifted her from the floor taking her back into their room and lying her in their bed pulling the covers and blankets over her.
Resting
“How is she?” Norrington asked anxiously when the doctor emerged from the room. “Is she going to be alright?” The surgeon gave a nod as he closed the door behind him.
“She just needs a bit of rest, not eating properly led to this episode. She needs to eat regularly, more often, and greater amounts. Somehow she picked up the habit of nibbling her food and that simply won’t do.” The doctor explained.
“She was poverty stricken most of her life. I suppose she had to learn to make her food, what little she had, last for sometime. I didn’t think it harmed anything, and that perhaps she would eat more over time.” James said not understanding why it would effect her now if it never effected her before.
“Well, you can’t wait for that. She’s got to break the habit now. She’ll continue to have these episodes if she doesn’t and their health will decline until we lose one or both of them.” James reached out and placed his hand on the doctors chest stopping him. Not sure if he heard correctly or if he was jumping to conclusions.
“I’m sorry . . . ‘their’ health?” He said wanting clarification before he assumed anything.
The doctor nodded, “Mrs. Norrington is with child. It’s still a bit early on, but there is no mistaking it.” James seemed a bit stunned and in shock as he starred blankly at the doctor.
“With child? . . . . already?” He said hardly able to completely process it. “We were only married a couple months ago.”
The doctor chuckled, “That’s all it takes Admiral. Congratulations.”
“I’m not sure congratulations is warranted.” He said as his eyes turned towards the door. “How did she react to the news?”
The doctor thought this was rather strange behavior from someone who was just informed he was going to be a father. “I . . . didn’t tell her. She’s asleep now, I thought you would like to be the one to tell her . . . was I wrong in my assumption?” James watched the door his eyes wide as if still trying to wrap his mind around the concept. “Admiral . . . is there question in your mind to the parentage of this child?” He said candidly.
“No.” James said a little insulted that he would even suggested it. “There is no doubt whatsoever that she carries my child.” He sighed. “It’s just . . . a bit sudden . . .” His eyes shifted back to the bedchamber door. “I can only hope that it is not a step that was taken to soon
for her.”
Requests for Transfers
Beckett sighed, “First it was your lovely bride asking for a stay of your orders, now you?” He clicked his tongue, “Honestly, what am I to do with the Norrington’s?” He taunted slightly.
“Matters have come up that I would like to oversee personally, Lord Beckett. They hadn’t been an issue before and I was willing to go along with this madness without complaint. I’m willing to go through the proper channels now, but I must ask that you resend the order to send me with this expedition.” James demanded.
“What matters?” Beckett pried. “What could possibly be so important that you are willing to risk your career that you worked so hard to achieve your honor once again to obtain, by this act of insubordination?”
“This is not insubordination. This is a simple request of transfer or a stay of orders until these matters are resolved.” James insisted. Beckett waited not saying anything else, insisting that he be told what the matters were otherwise he wouldn’t budge one way or the other. Norrington felt rather indianite about having his personal affairs being butted into in such a way.
“Bonnie is due to have our first child in the winter, and I would prefer to be here to see her through it personally.” Beckett’s small smirk that he wore when he was holding power over everyone disappeared as his eyes widened a bit at the news. Bonnie was expecting, James child. It was horrid news.
“Well.” Beckett said after a moment. “Congratulations.” He said forcing an insincere smile. Tossing down the coin he had been turning in his fingers he leaned forward looking at some documents on his desk. “Your request is denied. I will tell you what I told her when she made her request, that everything has already been arranged and it would disrupt business completely to change plans for the fleet now. It is far to large to send word by the sail date that it’s commander has been changed. So my answer is no. You will take your command as planned.” Norrington started to protest but Beckett quickly cut him off just wanting him out of his office, “We have the finest doctors here in port royal that will look after your wife in your absence and see her through her pregnancy so you needn’t worry about her health. She will be fine until
your return.”
James clinched his jaw realizing he wasn’t going to get another word in edge wise and that Beckett had shut down to any further conversation of any kind. Turning he left Beckett’s office slamming the door behind him. Beckett’s eyes shifted downward as he could feel the anger and hate start to well deep inside him. All at once he threw everything off his desk with a yell of displeasure.
Saying Goodbye
Bonnie stood on the dock in the early morning mists as the last odds and ends were being taken out to the flag ship. Along with the officers and crew that were assigned to serve on the vessel under Norrington’s immediate command. Norrington sighed as he walked over to his young bride and took her hands, “Bonnie you shouldn’t be down here in this cold. You’ll catch your death.”
“James isn’t there anything? Anyone we can go to higher then Lord Beckett that will be able to change the order?” She questioned. “Please, I don’t want to be left here alone.” She whispered leaning closer to his ear when she glanced towards Beckett who was standing on the docks with his man Mercer as well just yards away.
“Shhh, it’s alright. It will be alright darling.” He comforted. “I will write to you each time we put into port. The doctor will be by to check on you often. I promise, I promise you that I will hurry back as quickly as I can.” Bonnie sighed and looked down feeling a bit helpless, like she was falling off a steep cliff. Norrington took something from his pocket and placed it in her hand wrapping her fingers around it. Bonnie opened her hand and looked at her palm seeing a bright piece of metal that he had placed there. It was beautiful and pleasing to the eye. “It was given to me by the old Governor of Port Royal when I became Commodore. For honor and going above and beyond the call of duty. Keep it for me until I return?” Bonnie closed her hand around it once again and clutched it to her chest holding it tight. James watch a moment before he touched her chin raising her head and smiled.
“Try not to worry so darling. Everything will be fine.” Bonnie looked up at him remembering the last time someone said that to her before he went away. She never saw him again.
“Admiral Norrington. It’s time.” One of the officers informed him not getting to close knowing it was a private moment between James and his wife. The Admiral nodded and the officer stepped back and walked away. Norrington sighed hating to leave her more then he was letting on, but knew he had to be strong for both of them.
“You can write to me too if you wish darling.” He said. “Simply give your letters to the clerk at the military office at the docks and he will see that they are sent out with whatever dispatches the East India Trading Company are sending to the fleet.” Bonnie nodded quickly feeling him starting to pull away. She held tighter to his hands not wanting to let him go. Norrington smiled a little and paused before pulling her into a tight embrace, holding her firmly. Bonnie wrapped her arms around him clinging to him for dear life almost afraid to let him go
“Be safe James. Please be safe.” She whispered.
“I will. I promise.” He said in response. Pulling back a little he kissed her deeply. This time she didn’t hesitate, she returned his kiss anxiously.
Beckett rolled his eyes and turned away from the rather open display of affection feeling ill and rather irritated. After another moment, James finally pried himself away from Bonnie’s arms and took one last look at her before turning and walking with his officers to the boat that would carry them to their ship.
Nightmares
Bonnie awoke with a scream sitting up suddenly in bed breathing hard. She was sweating profusely and tangled in the sheets and covers from tossing and turning about almost violently. Looking around the room she realized she was alone and in her bedchamber and that she had only been dreaming. Closing her eyes she shook her head and covered her face wiping her hair back from her eyes.
Throwing the blankets and sheets back she quickly got out of bed and walked over pouring herself a cup of water and drinking deeply. Suddenly a knock to the door caused her to jump and drop the cup spilling the water. Bonnie sighed as she rested her hand to her head. The door opened as a maid came in, “Mistress? There is visitor here for you.”
“A visitor?” Bonnie said a little confused. “What time is it?” She asked.
“Nearly noon.” Noon? She could hardly believe that she had slept so late in the day without even knowing it.
“You’ll have to send them away. I’m in no condition to receive visitors. I’m neither dressed nor groomed to receive them. Have them return at another time.” She directed picking up the cup from the floor to fill it again.
“Yes Mistress.” The maid said with a curtsey before closing the door.
Bonnie took another drink before wiping the tears from her eyes and setting the cup down. Shaking her head she walked over to the bed and sat down.
