Chapter Four - A Ship in the Night
“Move you scabrous dogs!!” Jack bellowed, he stood glaring, feet firmly planted
shoulder width apart, one hand on the wheel and in the other he held his old
compass. The crew moved, scrambling to raise the jet black sails, the grinning
skull and crossbones snapped in the rising wind as the Pearl heeled around
turning to sail North, they had headed South from Tortuga
but now that the lights of the town had long disappeared and night had fallen
they changed direction.
“Turner I am of a mind to talk with you” Jack spoke suddenly into the quiet, he
had been uncommonly silent since they had left Tortuga,
his only words instructions to the crew, his usual cheerful singing at the
start of a voyage absent.
Will put down the rope that he had been coiling and gave some quiet orders to
the sailor that had been working alongside him, the man went to do his bidding.
Swaying easily with the motion of the ship, he climbed the stairs to where Jack
was standing.
“A fine night to be sailing” Jack said and then added in an undertone “can you
be bringing that map for me mate, quiet-like, these miscreants don’t need to
know where we are bound just yet, a secret is a secret when only two people are
knowing the secret, savvy”
“Aye Jack, I’ll not be speaking a word” Will softly replied, turning to leave
as his Captain caught his arm.
“It’s not in the cabinet” he whispered his eyes darting around checking where
the rest of the crew were, he gestured Will to move closer and with his mouth
to Will’s ear he
gave instructions as to where the chart was hidden.

The Pearl had sailed on the evening tide.
Bella had stood on the balcony and watched until the graceful ship had
disappeared over the horizon. Long after the black sails had vanished, she sat
alone contemplating the sea. Sam and Maggie had let her be, but as darkness
fell Maggie came outside, putting one hand on Bella’s shoulder she gave it a
gentle squeeze.
“Bella come inside now honey, supper is almost ready.”
“I’ll be in shortly Maggie.”
She did not turn from where she perched, sitting on the stone balcony ledge her
legs dangling below her. She was still wearing the dress that she had worn to Tortuga earlier in the day;
Jack had let out a low whistle when she had walked out of the kitchen to meet
him, it was not often that Jack was at a loss for words. He had made her turn
around several times and then had stalked around her grinning, before making a
fancy bow and kissing her hand. His pleasure at her wearing one of his gifts
had not been enough to have him change his mind though and they had exchanged
rather heated words over lunch. Finally Bella had slammed her plate on the
table and stalked out going to sit in her room, she had expected him to come up
and talk to her, he usually did, he hated it when they argued. Jack liked to
make her smile and usually Bella could get him to give in, but ever since she
had first started to mention sailing with him he had stood firm refusing to be
cajoled into changing his mind.
When she heard the iron gate slam shut she ran out to
the balcony and stared down the road in disbelief, Jack had left. Ever since
they had lived in this house they had always followed the same ritual, he never
departed without it. She watched him stalk along the curving road, he was
waving his arms and she knew that he was talking to himself. She could tell
from the way he gestured and looked up at that sky that he was angry, her heart
in her mouth she watched as he neared the last corner, soon he would be lost to
sight, he had not looked back once, he would not have forgotten, Jack never
forgot anything. However, he did not turn and Bella felt a cold wave of fear
wash over her, Jack was the only person that she had in the world and he had
gone without saying goodbye.
“Bella” it was Sam calling now and she slowly slid off the stone railing.
“I’m coming Sam.”

Will made his way along the deck and down the narrow stairs into the darkest
depths of the Pearl, following Jack’s
instructions he checked that he was alone and then retrieved the chart from
within an alcove beneath one of the central beams. Jack was certainly being
very careful with this map, Will didn’t quite understand the significance of it
yet, his Captain enjoyed keeping secrets and no doubt
was planning on making a dramatic announcement. It was one of the things that
was both entertaining and irritating about the Captain, but there would be no
changing him, he thrived on excitement. Will tucked it under his arm and was
making his way back to the wheel when he saw Gibbs and Anna Maria standing by
the railing their heads close together as they talked in low voices. They kept
glancing up to where Jack stood at the wheel, and as Will drew close he was
sure that he heard Gibbs say the name Bella before Anna Maria nudged the pirate
and he fell quiet.
“Will” Gibbs nodded at him.
“Anna Maria, Gibbs” he replied but did not slow he
could see Jack waving an imperious hand at him, the most feared pirate in the Spanish main was doing some sort
of silent pantomime that involved throat cutting gestures and lots of furious
gesticulating.
Gibbs let out the breath that he had been holding, he
had been sure that young Turner was going to stop and start questioning him
again about Bella. He had not seen her in nigh on six years, the gangly girl
had become a beauty but he had recognised her as soon
as he had set eyes on her. The fact that she had been with Maggie Clarke would
have silenced any doubt that he had, Maggie’s husband Sam and Jack had been
mates since childhood days. Maggie had even sailed on the Pearl a time or two
before Sam and her had married. Just last year they had chosen a shore bound
life, never really saying what they were going to do just that they were
wanting a more settled existence, a small house somewhere and children that
could care for them when they grew old. It was obvious that the children part
of the plan was well underway, but where did young Bella fit. Gibbs was not
going to be speaking of Bella to Jack, the last time he had mentioned her name
in the Captain’s presence Jack had fixed him with a cold eye and told him to
bite his tongue.
Nonetheless, he had drawn Anna Maria aside as soon as they were under full
sail. The two girls had been great mates; Anna would be sure to know a thing or
two.
“Anna I saw Isabella in Tortuga this morning, did
you know that she had returned?”
Anna Maria’s eyes were wary and she looked at him for a long moment before
replying, “you can’t say anything, but aye I knew that she was there.”
“How long has she been back?” he whispered hoarsely “the last time I saw her
was years ago before Jack lost the Pearl.”
“A little while” Anna replied evasively not looking Gibbs in the eye “don’t be
saying anything to Jack” she warned.
“Do I be having a sign reading stupid around my neck then?” he gave a snort of
disgust “I figure that if Jack is not wanting folks to know that Bella is back
then I will be a wise man to keep my mouth shut..”
“Aye Gibbs” Anna Maria nodded “that would be the best I am thinking.”
“Turner saw her” he said bluntly “keeps asking me who she is.”
“For pities sake Gibbs don’t be telling him.”
“Don’t be telling him what?” Jack’s voice drifted out of the night behind them
and they both started. He was standing not far from them one hand resting on
his hip his eyes considering as he watched them.
“Nothing Jack” Gibbs stuttered not able to meet his captain’s eye.
“Oh be a man Gibbs” Anna Maria muttered with a disgusted face, “he was thinking
that there be weevils in the flour Captain.”
“Weevils” the look of Jack’s face was a mixture of revulsion and indignation “I
was checking that flour myself, it is nigh impossible to find an honest
shopkeeper in Tortuga, at least pirates don’t pretend
to be honest...bloody thieves the lot of them” he stomped away cursing that all
merchants were rogues give him an honest burglar any day.
“Quick thinking lass” Gibbs murmured “that flour be clean though.”
“Well better Jack thinks that you are a little worse for wear from the rum than
he catches you talking about Bella.”
“Aye” Gibbs agreed but with a decidedly sour expression on his face.
