“So you are going to let him get away with this?” Kul’vir
roared at Ne’el. “He killed several Yautja’s in one day!”
He stormed into Ne’el’s quarters and talked about Sh’lok
actions in the sparring halls. Ne’el watched silently as his brother ranted
about Sh’lok’s impudent ways.
“I thought you two were friends?” Ne’el was still packing
his things at a slow leisurely pace. He will miss this ship, but he couldn’t
wait to turn over the responsibility to Sh’lok. His body vibrated as he thought
about hunting again. He knew what happened in the halls and understood
completely. He too had to kill a male or two when he took over the ship. Sh’lok
had more to prove than him. He have a human as a mate
and children with her.
“We are acquaintances,” Kul’vir corrected.
“Wow, before Kayla you two were like brothers Kul’vir,”
Ne’el stopped and looked at his brother. “What happened?”
“I rather not discuss this with you,” Kul’vir growled in annoyance.
“What are you going to do about his actions?”
“Nothing,” Ne’el chuckled. “This is technically Sh’lok’s
ship and he can do what he pleases. To be perfectly blunt with you Kul’vir, I
don’t see anything wrong in what he did and I actually admire him for it. He
gained his respect and protected his family in one day.” Ne’el walked past his
angry brother and sat another bag near the door for the eta’s to pick up later.
“I think you and father are terribly wrong about this
whole thing,” Kul’vir snapped. “Sh’lok is entirely too young to handle a ship.
He displays ooman emotions when no one is around…”
“Who told you of this?”
“His older son, Shra’van,” he crossed his arms. “He has
taken a liking to my family and me.”
“You didn’t happen to encourage this relationship did
you?” Ne’el questioned in an amusing tone. “I noticed him on several occasions
with you.”
“He is Su’tara’s brother,” Kul’vir sat down. “Of course I
enjoy talking to him. He has the potential to be a fine warrior, unlike their
younger pup.”
Ne’el laughed, “Yes, I seen him with a combistick. I don’t
understand why Kayla doesn’t train him.”
“So what are you going to do about Sh’lok?”
Ne’el shook his
shoulder softly. “He is your friend Kul’vir. You two killed my friend together,
so work out your petty problems.” Ne’el motioned to his door, giving Kul’vir a
hint to leave. He growled in annoyance before walking out.
Everyday Lo’kesh walked back to his quarters happy. Happier than he’s ever been. He never knew looking into her
eyes everyday would make him so happy, but it did. And every morning she would
say hello, or speak for a moment before her little brother was dragging her
away.
“How are you Lo’kesh?” Su’tara smiled as she walked over
to him. He looked at her. She had on her usual training attire.
“I am very well, thank you,” he nodded when he looked her
way. He always made sure not to stare at her. “For the past couple of weeks
your brother keeps introducing himself to me, along with your parent’s name. He
is very formal.”
Su’tara started to laugh. “He will continue until you
acknowledge and speak my parent’s name.”
“Why does he do it?”
“He respects my parents immensely. And he wants everyone
to know exactly who they are.” Su’tara looked at the spot he was cleaning and
shook her head. “Why do you clean the same area everyday?”
To look at you, he wanted to blurt out. “This is
where I usually start.” He turned to look at her. As they looked at one another
he could suddenly smell her amorous scent get stronger.
“Why are you looking at my sister?” Shra’van growled
before kicking Lo’kesh from behind.
“My apologies,” Lo’kesh said in a low tone as he looked at
the floor. He knew all Shra’van had to do was tell his parents and that would
mean his death. He always had dreams of dying in a great hunt, not because he
looked at an important female.
Su’tara snarled at her brother before kicking him in the
stomach. The blow was so hard and unexpected that he bent over in pain. “Don’t
ever disrespect another Yautja that way!”
“You’re defending a servant?” Shra’van held onto his
stomach.
“You are pathetic Shra’van,” Su’tara growled. She looked
back at Lo’kesh. He refused to even look her way.
Ta’noj witnessed everything. He knew his sister had a
fondness for the servant, but it never bothered him. Ta’noj respected him like
any other Yautja onboard the ship. If that is whom his sister was to choose as
a mate then it was fine with him. He hoped that she would wait until his
fighting skills were better because once she decide to make such an
announcement he will defiantly have to protect her. “Su’tara lets go,” Ta’noj
yelled.
Shra’van went back into their quarters. He needed to rest
for a moment from the blow. He knew his sister was strong, but she never kicked
him when she was angry.
“I’m sorry Lo’kesh,” Su’tara spoke softly, hoping he would
look at her as he started to scrub the floors quickly.
“Please Su’tara,” he spoke in the same tone as her. “You
cannot defend me. It is not a females place to defend a male.”
“But you didn’t fight back?” she gave him a puzzled look.
“Su’tara,” Ta’noj yelled again.
“Just a minute Ta’noj,” she turned to look at him. He
nodded. She looked at Lo’kesh but he still refused to look at her. “My Father
always taught us to help the weak.”
He stopped what he was doing before looking at her.
Su’tara sensed her words caused him great pain. Lo’kesh didn’t feel any pain.
He suddenly realized what he could never be. He would never fight in a great
battle; he would never be a guard or even considered to be a respected Yautja.
He will always be an eta, in her eyes and everyone else’s. When he stood up his
body towered over hers. He flexed his chest, purposely showing her how large he
really was. If a superior saw what he just did he could get demoted back to
scrubbing bathrooms. It always made the non eta’s feel threatened to see an eta
at their full height and body build, so most of his job consisted of being on
the floor. Su’tara gasped. She always seen him hunched over or on his knees.
She never had seen him at his full height. He was much larger than Shra’van and
just as tall as her uncles. His eyes grew darker as he finally spoke to her.
“Excuse me, I must finish my duties.” He nodded respectfully and walked away.
Su’tara watched him until he turned the corner. Ta’noj
could tell she was upset. “Damn, he is bigger than I thought. Why didn’t you go
after him?”
“I chase no one,” Su’tara said looking at him. “And watch
your language.” She couldn’t understand, of all the males on the ship why she
chose to give Lo’kesh her undivided attention. A few males that she sparred
with started to show her interest, but Su’tara turned her nose up at them. She
sparred with the females a few times, but it was more exciting to spar with
males.
“Shra’van?” Kayla questioned walking closer to him. He was
sitting at the table massaging his stomach. “What’s wrong with you?
“Nothing,” he mumbled not looking at her. Kayla sat across
from him and moved his hand away from his stomach. He growled at her but she
completely ignored him as she looked at the bruise. It was worse than the
bruise on her neck that Sh’lok gave her from mating the other night. She looked
back at him. “Su’tara kicked me.”
“Why?”
“I kicked an eta.”
“Why?” Kayla questioned again. She stood up and opened one
of drawers she kept an emollient for bruises. Sh’lok used some on her last
night after they sparred with one another.
“He was looking at Su’tara,” he growled at her. Shra’van
looked at the jar his mother had in her hands. “Don’t put any of that stuff on
me, it probably only works on ooman’s.”
“Bad news son, you are part ooman,” Kayla said
sarcastically. She looked at him and gasped as if she just told him a deep dark
secret. Shra’van didn’t find her joke a bit amusing and was about to get up but
Kayla snapped at him. “Stay still!” He flinched when she rubbed the odorless
cream onto his stomach. “Just because he looked at her it gives you no right to
kick someone...”
“You are always defending her!” Shra’van tried to yell,
but instead found himself wincing from the pain.
Kayla looked up at him as he covered his stomach again.
“And she had no right kicking you,” Kayla said softly. “Stop interrupting me
when I’m talking to you Shra’van.”
“Tell the truth Mother. You favor Su’tara because she
looks more like you.”
“I love you all equally and you know that,” Kayla was hurt
by her son’s harsh words. “Though, you really make it hard Shra’van.”
She stared into his eyes that reminded her so much of his
father except, his was filled with anger. A deep anger and
hurt that she had no clue how to fix. His eyes stop shining at her over
ten years ago and Kayla sometimes found herself aching to see the glow in them
again. They started to soften as he looked at her shoulder. “What happen?” he
nodded towards her shoulder.
Kayla looked at her bruise. She forgot that it was there
for a moment. “Your father and I were sparring last night and I failed to miss
one of his blows.”
“That’s an oxymoron,” he chuckled. Kayla looked at him
slightly confused. “The words you and sparring.”
Kayla forgot that Shra’van had never seen her fight. He
watched her play with Su’tara and Ta’noj, but he never watched Kayla spar with
anyone. “I’m glad I can be your source of amusement for the morning,” Kayla
stood up as the doors opened. “Stef’na I was just about to come join you.”
Stef’na held her little girl Gee’ta,
and her son that was a year older than Shra’van was standing behind her. “Hello
Kayla,” Ro’shan nodded to her. He looked over at Shra’van. “Are you ready to
fight?”
Shra’van nodded as he stood up.
“Bye Mother,” Ro’shan rubbed his mother’s cheek softly
before walking out the door. Shra’van looked at Kayla and nodded before
leaving.
“Well at least you got a nod this time,” Stef’na tried to
joke as the doors closed. “Honestly Kayla, I do not know what I would do if any
of my sons acted out in such a disrespectful manner.”
“Every day I wait and hope he will change,” Kayla admitted
to her friend. She smiled and reached for Gee’ta whom
gladly went into her arms.
“Someone is ready for another baby,” Stef’na teased. Kayla
smiled at the thought as they walked to the community play room.
“After our meeting with the Jafren I will resume having
more children,” Kayla announced to her friend.
Lo’kesh dressed slowly for the party he now regretted
signing up for. He leisurely took his time as he thought about what happened
between Su’tara and him weeks ago. He hadn’t seen her since. Lo’kesh made sure
to make her living area the last on his list instead of the first. “What is
taking you so long?” one of the males questioned as he walked into Lo’kesh’s
quarters. He too was serving food at Ne’el’s party. They didn’t say anything to
one another as they quickly walked to the dinning hall. It was rarely used for
dining. Mainly Ne’el would have big meetings with other warriors in the room.
Lo’kesh notice the large round table was already decorated and the food smelled
wonderful. All he had to do was serve and not look
into Su’tara eyes.
Kayla stood by the door arguing with Su’tara about her
attire. She wore pants that resembled a silk material. They were so loose it
almost looked like a dress. The waist of the pants was low and barely covering
her butt. Her shirt was tight and extremely short. It was low-cut with small
emerald stones decorating the neckline and her short sleeves. Her stomach was
small and tight. Su’tara knew her body looked nice and tonight she didn’t want
to hide it like her mother hid hers by wearing a long wrapped dress that only
showed a small peek of her stomach. “Unlike your sister, Ta’noj you look very
nice,” Kayla teased as she looked over at Su’tara. He wore the usual formal
attire for males. Long loincloth that was decorated with
golden Yautja images. In the center of the cloth was metal plating that
was long and wide. It hung from his waist to the middle of the loincloth. It
appeared to be heavy, but it was really thin. He also wore a dark, loose
fitting shirt that looked like it was made from the same material that Su’tara
outfit was made from.
“Thank you Mother,” Ta’noj trilled softly.
“Where is he!” Sh’lok snarled
angrily and he stormed into their quarters in rage. “Shra’van!”
Ta’noj and Su’tara stepped closer to their mother, not
knowing what was going on. “Sh’lok,” Kayla spoke softly. He ignored her as he
screamed his son’s name again. When Shra’van walked out Sh’lok quickly grabbed
him by the neck. With a loud roar he slammed his son against the wall.
He spoke in a broken speech as he slammed Shra’van into
the wall several times. “Don’t you ever talk about my fucking emotions with
anyone!” he roared.
Kayla gasped. She had never seen him so angry with their
son before. He never put his hands on Shra’van in such a way. He looked as
though he was choking him. Shra’van feet were off the ground as Sh’lok stared
at him in contempt. “Sh’lok!” Kayla screamed at him. “Put our son down!”
Sh’lok snapped as he suddenly seen his child choking and
released him, allowing his body to fall to the floor. Kayla went over to
Shra’van to check on him. She could see the bruise forming on his neck. He
pushed Kayla’s hand away and she turned to look at Sh’lok whom was looking at
both of them. “Our son decides to go to Kul’vir and tell him everything we do
in our quarters. He tells him that I’m emotional. He calls Ta’noj weak, Su’tara
a whore and you are just a mere ooman.” Everyone stared at Shra’van in horror.
“That’s not all,” Sh’lok growled as he felt himself getting angry all over
again. “I hear all of this from Ne’el today.” Kayla stood up and backed away
from Shra’van.
“Why son?” Kayla spoke softly.
“Why would you talk about your family like that?”
He stood up as he looked at all the disappointed faces in
front of him. “I have no family,” he barked. “You all treat me like an
outsider!”
“You treat yourself like an outsider Shra’van,” Su’tara
growled angrily. “How are you to call me a whore? I never mated with anyone,
unlike you!”
Kayla gasped, “You mated? When?”
Shra’van growled at his sister before looking at his
parents. Sh’lok grabbed Shra’van by the arm and walked him to his room. “The
only time this door is to open is when you need to eat,” Sh’lok hissed as he
pushed his son into his bedroom. When the doors closed he pressed his hand on
the side of the door and a circular panel slid open on the wall. Kayla never
knew it was there. After tapping in some codes a computerized voice announced
that the doors were locked. Sh’lok stormed passed Kayla and into their bedroom.
Kayla went back into the other room where Su’tara and
Ta’noj stood, still in shock. “Come here,” she said as she hugged them both.
“Your brother is going through his own private issues that he wishes not to
share with us,” Kayla said softly as she kissed each of her children. When she
let them go she quickly tried to wipe her tears away as she smiled at them.
“Su’tara, you are beautiful, and you know you’re not a whore.” Kayla looked
over her outfit. “And your outfit is fine, I’m just jealous of how nice your
body looks.” Su’tara trilled softly at her. “Ta’noj you are always around to
protect your sister and that is not a sign of a weak Yautja.”
“I know Mother.” As he stood up straighter Kayla noticed
he grew an inch or so since they arrived on the new ship. Kayla told her kids
to wait a moment as she checked on their father.
When Kayla walked into the room Sh’lok was drying himself
off from his shower. He looked at her, his eyes had no
spark to them as he let out a deep sigh. “What did you say back to Ne’el,”
Kayla spoke softly as she sat next to him.
Sh’lok leaned back on the bed and closed his eyes. “I told
him how angry Shra’van has been since the move and he was acting out. I told
him that my son prefers to talk to Kul’vir because he listens to him and give
him advice.” Sh’lok looked at Kayla as she laid on the
bed and stroked his face softly. “He believed me.”
“I can’t believe our son would do such a thing,” Kayla
spoke softly.
“It gets worse Kayla,” Sh’lok rolled over on his side and
held her waist as he looked into her eyes. “Ne’el thinks I should not allow
Shra’van to associate with Kul’vir on such a personal level. He wouldn’t
explain why he just told me to consider it.” He paused a moment as his hand
traveled up and down Kayla’s curvy body. “Now why would his own brother warn me
against him? I’m his close friend and raising his biological daughter, surly he
would not wish me any harm.”
“Of course not,” Kayla smiled at him. “But sometimes his
temper reminds me a lot of how his father used to be.” Kayla suddenly caught
herself as Sh’lok looked at her in utter bewilderment. “Get dressed Sh’lok. We
will be late.”
“I didn’t think you were close to Sa’tesh,” Sh’lok said as
he stood up. “He hadn’t changed to me.” Although Sh’lok dropped the subject, as
she watched him getting dressed she suddenly felt like she was lying to her
mate through her silence. It was a secret among family that not even Sa’tesh
knew of. She trusted Sh’lok with her life and Kayla felt she could also trust him
with Kul’vir’s secret.
She watched him clamp the metal plating onto his
loincloth. “Sa’tesh is not Kul’vir’s biological father,” Kayla said softly as
she watched Sh’lok head swing over to look at her.
“What?” he walked closer to her.
“Maha’vin is Kul’vir’s father,” Kayla looked at Sh’lok as
his eyes widened and he sat next to her.
“Now your statement makes sense,” he thought about his
friends features. He didn’t see it. “That’s why you and Nam’rah are so close.
Your paths were almost the same weren’t they?”
Kayla nodded as she told him everything. Sh’lok held her
hand as she told him about the fight Kul’vir had with Maha’vin and why they
don’t speak now. “I trusted you every since you took me into that dark cave,”
Kayla felt on his cheek. “Surly I can trust you with the secrets that were
trusted to me.”
“I’m honored,” Sh’lok nodded. “But did Kul’vir purr with
Sa’tesh as a baby?”
“Nam’rah covered it up with being overprotective,” Kayla
remembered asking Nam’rah the same question. “She wouldn’t allow Sa’tesh to
hold the baby until he was mimicking sounds.” Sh’lok nodded.
“Let’s go. We will discuss more of this later.” When they
walked out the room Su’tara and Ta’noj were playing with Sh’lok’s weapons. He
growled at both of them as they quickly put everything away. He looked at
Su’tara carefully.
“Are you going to let her wear that?” He questioned Kayla
in the elder’s language.
“She has to be unique,” Kayla chuckled.
“I don’t approve,” Sh’lok said to Su’tara as he and Ta’noj
walked out the quarters. Kayla patted her back and Su’tara trilled softly.
