Chapter 4 – Fun and fear
“Cool, can you show me how to
do that?”
John mentally rolled
his eyes as he stared at the teen he was facing. What else had he
expected Chas to ask anyway? But he had already lost too much time
reading to a younger Chas and stumbling through a labyrinth of
memories. Managing to sound as annoyed as he always did when his
apprentice asked something of him John answered.
“I don't have time for you, kid.”
Ignoring his inner
voice that told him that he could have been nicer John strode past
the teen and started examining the long row of doors. Which one was
he to take? They all looked the same and considering the parts of
Chas' mind he had already seen nothing too bad was going to face him,
so he simply reached out towards the doorknob closest to himself.
“If you're looking for one of
my other selves you won't find him there.” Once again facing
the teen-aged Chas John watched as he took
candy bar out of his pocket and calmly started sucking on it. Shit.
He definitely was a sick fuck since he could feel slivers of arousal
stir in his body. Obviously his prick
didn't care that the Chas in front of him was almost still a kid.
Redirecting his eyes
everywhere but at the kid's mouth John spoke: “And where do you
suggest I go look, kid.”
“ 'm not a kid. And I want
something for showing you.” The smirk spreading over the teen's
face reminded John too much of the one he wore when he had tricked
his apprentice into staying in the car to be entirely comfortable.
Maybe the kid really had spend far too much time in his company.
What was even more
unsettling were his subconscious' ideas of
what he could do to repay the teen-aged
Chas. Trying to force the thoughts of bending the teen over the next
available surface and fucking him, out of his mind John gritted his
teeth in annoyance before he answered. “What do you want?”
Almost as an afterthought he added 'kid' to the sentence.
“Show me how you drove those
guys away.”

Sometime that to John
seemed like an eternity later Chas had mastered the needed
incantation and the exorcist had a headache of gigantic proportions.
On top of that he was also fiercely craving a smoke, a need he hadn't
felt since he entered into Chas' mind. His fingers trembling slightly
from the lack of nicotine he shoved an ampule of holy water into the
kid's hands and asked him where he had to go.
“Just go down the corridor.
There's a gym at the very end. One of my other selves is always
there.” And then the teen was jsimply gone, leaving a scowling
exorcist behind. Cursing under his breath John started walking in the
direction Chas had indicated, not for the first time wondering if his
apprentice was really worth all the trouble. Maybe not, but in the
end he cared about the kid far too much to just let him lie in a
hospital bed, trapped in his mind.
Finally the gym door
came into view, soft music filtering through. The title was vaguely
familiar and even though he couldn't recall it's name John remembered
that Chas had often sung along to it when he was driving the taxi.
John also recalled
repeatedly scolding his apprentice for his annoying taste in music,
even though he hadn't thought the song half bad. It had been Chas'
singing that had gotten to him, his voice filtering into his mind and
destroying the gloomy mood the exorcist liked to surround himself
with.
The music increased in
volume as John opened the door, his mouth falling open in shocked
surprise at the vision in front of him. Chas was dancing in the
middle of the gym, dressed in nothing but a pair of low-riding jeans,
his body swaying to the music as he sang along to the song.
This time he couldn't deny the lust that hit him as his eyes
hungrily slid over this Chas' body. At least this version of his
apprentice was older, looking almost completely like the Chas he
knew. And why the hell did he feel like he was just searching for
excuses to continue staring?
He still hadn't stopped watching though, while Chas continued his
dance, oblivious to the captive audience he had gathered. His
movements were flowing gracefully, so much more graceful
than he was in reality. But then again John had never had the chance
to see Chas dance and if he thought about it it was probably a good
thing, since he wasn't sure if he could keep himself from simply
pouncing on the kid if he had to watch much longer.
Coughing he tried to capture Chas' attention, who immediately
whirled around, a blush spreading over his cheeks as he noticed his
audience. Shaking thoughts of other ways to cause such a blush from
his mind John approached the teen.
“Who are you?” Chas' whole stance radiated
embarrassment and defensiveness as John
stepped closer to him, his arms defiantly crossed over his chest.
Keeping enough distance between the two of them to not make the
teen uncomfortable John answered: “I'm John.” Since Chas
looked at him questioningly he continued. “I'm looking for the
real version of you. He has to be asleep somewhere.” Chas still
looked a little skeptical, but then again if somebody would have told
him the same things he had just told the teen in front of him he
would have been skeptical too.
Obviously making up his mind Chas answered: “I don't know
about the real version of me, but if you go through the door right
behind you, you will find another of us there. Maybe he can help
you.” Turning around John looked at a door than hadn't been
there a second ago.
He turned back to ask Chas if he knew something more about that
version of himself, but the gym was empty, only the soft music
reminding him of what had just happened. Sighing John walked towards
the door, wondering if the next version of his apprentice would be
more helpful than the last ones.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The door swung open and John found himself in a small bedroom, a
single bed placed under the window. The moon was shining in, offering
enough light for John to notice the shivering heap of blankets that
was pressed into the farthest corner of the bed.
The head of a smaller, more childlike version of Chas was peeking
out of the blankets, looking scared and trying his best to stay
invisible in the shadows. It didn't look like he could expect much
help here.
John was about to turn around and leave when something held him
back. The child had started crying, tears leaking from his eyes as he
sniveled, his head sinking deeper into the
blankets again. With every other child John would have most likely
ignored the tears and gone, but this was Chas, his one weak spot.
Cursing his weakness that held him up in his search time and time
again the exorcist went over to the bed, sitting down and reaching
out for the blanket. “Chas?” His asshole exorcist image
would have suffered severely had anybody seen the tenderness with
which he peeled the blankets away from the young boy, but then again
he only did it because he knew that nobody except
for him was here.
“Are they gone?” Chas had stopped crying, obviously
trusting the adult perched on his bed to keep whatever had scared him
away. His eyes kept straying over to the window and John curiously
followed his gaze.
There was nothing there, so John simply asked, his curiosity
getting the better of him. “Who?”
“The monsters. They always look in when I want to sleep.
They look like people, but then they become monsters. My teacher is
one too, but my dad doesn't believe me.” Ah, the demons. John
remembered a time when he had been just as scared. “Will they
stay away now?”
Chas sounded hopeful. Looking at him as if he was the greatest
hero in the world, the one person who could keep the demons away.
“No, they'll come back.” Chas' face fell at the prospect,
another tear falling from his eyes. Some people had always accused
him of not having a heart, but John could feel it breaking at that
precise moment. “But you can drive them away. If you aren't
scared of them, they'll go away. Can you do that, kid?”
The small Chas was eagerly nodding his head, looking relieved. His
tears had stopped once again and John gave in to the sudden urge to
press a kiss to the kid's forehead before walking towards the door
again. Obviously he wouldn't find more answers here, but his
protective feelings for his apprentice seemed to have grown
considerably in the few moments he had spend with Chas' younger self.
John opened the door and stepped through, expecting to find
himself in the gym.
