"So...you wanted to talk to me?"
Stronghold's voice sounded very uncertain. Looking up from his book, Warren just glanced at the boy he once hated for his name alone and just studied him. The Popsicle--Ethan--stood behind him. None of the rest were in sight yet but both of these two had their lunch trays in hand. He frowned at the geeky kid behind Will.
"Yeah. Take a hike, Popsicle. And tell the rest to get another table this time."
Ethan seemed about to protest but actually squeaked under the glare he got.
"Uh, sure...as long as it's just talk. I'll be over there if you need me, Will."
Once that was settled, Warren closed the book and folded his arms on the table to study the kid sitting across from him. He was not one to ask for help a lot if ever. Unfortunately, he was also one that needed to have an answer of some sort for a question otherwise it nagged him to death. Just like this one was.
"You know that mute Sidekick?"
"Uh, mute sidekick?"
Rolling his eyes, Warren tilted his head in Gavin's direction. Like an idiot, Will twisted around and craned his neck to quite obviously stare before turning back around. "Yeah, that's Gavin Dovev. What about him?"
"Who's that girl that he always hangs around, the one with glasses?"
He knew he likely got to the real question too fast from the look on Stronghold's face. The glare however wiped that away.
"Well, I know her name's Crystal. Dunno much else though. Why?"
Any answer he gave was likely just going to incriminate him in some way. He was asking about a girl after breaking up thus he was interested. Or so was the reasoning everyone in school followed. Warren was saved however when Magenta came up and sat down without so much as a "Hi" to them. Ethan followed immediately even as Magenta spoke up.
"Why what?"
Great. Why had he even tried to bother? The Group never would allow anything to remain secret or private.
"Warren asked me if I knew the name of the girl that Gavin kid's always with."
Magenta raised one brow. "Crystal?"
"You know her then," Warren pressed in a voice that would have been menacing...to anyone other than Magenta.
The Goth-girl shrugged as she began to pick at her food. "Not really. Gavin's cool though."
At about that time, Zach and Layla came over to sit. The gang was all there.
"Who's cool?" Zach asked.
"Gavin. Smart too." Magenta stole her boyfriend's pudding cup. "And not bad looking."
Zach tensed and looked around in a way they had come to associate with him trying to start a fight...only to get his butt kicked in the attempt. Layla cleared her throat. "Will, are you going to eat that apple? It has a worm in it."
Warren was frustrated enough by then to care less just what the gang thought as he glared at Magenta. "So do you know her last name?"
Shrugging, Magenta handed Ethan the stolen pudding in exchange for his chocolate cake. "Sorry, never paid attention."
Layla looked at Warren. "You mean Crystal Windsong?"
"The one that Gavin hangs around," Will supplied as he traded Ethan his fries for the pudding.
"Yeah, know anything about her, nature-girl?"
For a moment, Layla looked thoughtful before she sighed. "All I really know is that her dad's in the Air Force. That's why she has so many items with the emblem on them."
"I heard about her," Ethan commented as he stole one of the two cartons of milk on Zach's tray. "Her parents are divorced. Neither of them had any powers. Supposedly her dad's been schooling her at home and training her military style to follow his footsteps in the Air Force. Even had her enrolled in military schools. But when her powers manifested, her dad used some contacts to get her sent up here with us."
Zach leaned in after stealing a carton of apple juice from Layla's tray. "I heard that her dad's just a regular citizen and her mom's like a hero that never did anything with her powers. Sucks really. After she graduates, she'll go to the military academy for her college. Then she'll become like some super weapon for the Air Force to use."
This was all amusing but it was telling him little.
"She's some sort of air-elemental," Layla interjected as she traded Will a fresh apple for the pudding. "That's her power, to control the wind. She's probably even able to fly. They said that when she was in placement, she didn't do anything. Just when Coach Boomer was ready to yell out "Sidekick", she sent him flying into a wall with a small cyclone. He couldn't walk straight for a week. Naturally she went into the Hero class. Gavin's a type of air-power too."
Honestly, Warren did not care much about Gavin but he remained silent for the time to listen as Zach traded the sandwich he had snatched from Ethan to Will for the pudding cup--and blinked in confusion when he got it into his hand.
"Oh! Yeah, that's like one of the most famous ones too!" Ethan was almost bouncing in excitement. "Coach Boomer didn't realize Gavin was mute, and he didn't let anyone speak up to tell him either. He was calling Gavin all these names and mocking him...when suddenly no one could hear a thing the Coach was saying. Took him another ten minutes before he realized no one was hearing anything. He couldn't even yell out Gavin's placement, it came out as a squeak!"
For the most part, Warren finally tuned the others out and glanced over to where Gavin was sitting with a bunch of other Sidekicks. There was no sign of the girl with glasses...Crystal if that was correct. Absently he wondered just where she was. Something told him likely he would find her again occupying his spot. Catching sight of Freon, he felt his bad mood slam back down on him and he opened his book to glare at the words. Damn that girl anyway. The faster the school year came to an end, the better. Then he would never have to see this place again as long as he lived.
