What was he going to do? Damn it all, he was so fucking stupid! How could he have come here and put his family in danger? He knew that it was only a matter of time before they tracked him down. What the fuck was he supposed to do down? He couldn’t even kill himself because they’d make his family pay for it.
There was no option. He had to leave. But how the fuck was he going to do that? All three of his brothers were blocking his door, and he wasn’t getting past them without telling them what was going on. He didn’t know how they’d react if he actually told them. They’d probably be so ashamed and disgusted by him that they’d want nothing more to do with him. He didn’t think he could handle that kind of rejection by his brothers. Jerry, the family man, who’d do anything and everything to ensure his family was provided for and healthy; Angel, the one who always seemed to find trouble and had a certain knack for getting out of it thanks only to his rather dubious charms; and Bobby, the oldest, the protector, the one who had, from the moment Jack was brought to the Mercer home, looked out for him and kept him safe, who would be so disappointed in Jack if he knew. All three of them would be sickened at the sight of him once they knew.
There was no doubt in his mind that he couldn’t let his brothers know. He knew what he had to do, and he had to find a way.

Bobby’s eyes bore into the door as if he could will Jack to open it by staring at it hard enough. He knew that between the three of them, that door might as well have been paper if they tried to force their way it. But that option was out for two reasons: number one, Ma would not be happy if they did that, and number two, it would probably just drive Jackie further away.
“Come on, man,” Jerry said. “He’ll come out when he’s ready.”
“Yeah,” Angel agreed. “He can’t stay in there forever.”
Bobby sighed and nodded.

They each were making a valiant effort to keep conversation up, but Jerry knew that none of their hearts were in it. He himself couldn’t keep his mind off his little brother upstairs, trying to figure out what would cause him to withdraw from his brothers.
Suddenly, the loud banging of the back door slamming shut. All three raced towards the door and could easily see the trail of someone, Jack they assumed, apparently running towards the fence and jumping it. However, they could find no sign of which way he went or how far he’d gotten. He had evidently been desperate to get away, and there was no telling where he went to.
Deciding that the best thing to do is to find out why he left, they did what any caring brother would do—
they snooped through his stuff. Jerry was getting frustrated at their search yielding nothing when he spotted a crumpled sheet of paper lying on the ground. He picked it up and looked at it.His face went pale and he tightened his grip on the paper. “Oh, God, no.”
